[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:15:38 PM EST] <bynw> good to hear you are feeling better KK and hopefully no more falls
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:16:06 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Did you get to your friends home for turkey
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:16:45 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Hopefully you got to gobble lots of food on Gobbler Day
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:16:59 PM EST] <KK> No more falls; but I think my most recent fall left more knee damage then I realized, bruises and strained muscles, and my back is giving me fits.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:17:13 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Oh dear. 😦
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:17:14 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> I got to gobble a lot of food the day after Gobbler Day
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:17:21 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Pleased to meet you, KK! I hope you are well. Your books are something I just can't stay away from lately.

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:18:09 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> KK's books have this magnetic attraction that keep you coming back, Marc. 😉
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:18:11 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Hello Marc... glad you can join us
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:18:12 PM EST] <The_Bee> Who's your favorite character, marc?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:19:08 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> KK, marc_du_temple joined us just a couple of weeks ago, he's been checking out the forum lately.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:20:23 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Well, right now I'm about a quarter through The Temple and The Stone, after reading the sequel to that one first. I still think that Torquil Lennox is great, but from the snippet I saw in a short story, Adam Sinclair is a gentleman scholar. Between the two of them, there are some great heroes in what few books I have gotten to.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:20:29 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> *putting out some Thanksgiving leftovers on the snacks table*
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:20:56 PM EST] <KK> Had to cancel Thanksgiving plans, because neither I nor my friend was feeling up to it. She'd had Covid when I did, and after effects do linger. But she brought me Lasagna on Friday, and it's been delicious.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:21:18 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> *adds some beets*
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:21:23 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> There's nothing like a healing lasagne
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:21:28 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Yum, I haven't had lasagna in a while
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:21:29 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Lasagna sounds Delish
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:21:37 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Amen to the lasagna.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:21:38 PM EST] <The_Bee> Yummy lasagna!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:21:39 PM EST] * CambersGhost [discord] <stnezz> provides pumpkin pie and whipped cream

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:21:52 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> Yes
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:21:53 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Have you read any of the other series yet after the Temple books, Marc?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:22:03 PM EST] <KK> Welcome, Marc. Glad you're enjoying the books.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:23:05 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> The Adept series is a fairly short one, so easy enough to catch up on once you get your hands on a set, but my first and foremost love is the Deryni series.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:23:05 PM EST] * CambersGhost [discord] <laurnarose> my fingers are wrapped around a hot cup to tea to warm them up.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:23:34 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> Your fingers are cold?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:23:37 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> I really enjoyed the Adept series and would love to read more of them
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:23:38 PM EST] <The_Bee> Remind me, KK--were the Temple books yours or Scott's?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:23:56 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> And there are some standalone books too, like Two Crowns for America, or St. Patrick's Gargoyle
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:24:04 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Jerusha you will laugh at me, it is now 62F and I am freezzing.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:24:09 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Thank you for writing them, ma'am.

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:24:46 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> We have snow, again
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:24:52 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> The Temple books are hers, Bee. Scott wrote...oh, what's the name of that series? Knights of the Blood, I think?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:25:00 PM EST] * bynw has snow
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:25:25 PM EST] <bynw> Yes that is correct Evie. Knights of the Blood was Scott's series. Unforutnately it will never be finished :(
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:25:27 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Bynw, I am not visiting you either until after the thaw
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:25:51 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> You will have to come in June then, Laurna
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:25:53 PM EST] <The_Bee> Remind me--what's the book about telepathic cats?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:26:00 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Sounds good to me
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:26:11 PM EST] <bynw> Legacy of Lehr
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:26:31 PM EST] <bynw> Laurna, it's only a little bit of snow
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:26:38 PM EST] <The_Bee> oh yes1 Thanks, bynw
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:26:41 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> Unfortunately, the black flies visit then as well
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:26:44 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> HAHA Bynw
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:26:46 PM EST] <KK> Alas, he never really told me what he had in mind for a 3rd Nazi Vampires book.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:27:06 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> If you like the Temple books, Marc, you might also like the Deryni series (there are several trilogies). They are also in a medieval setting, though more historical fantasy than the Temple books since the Deryni are in their own world that is similar to ours but not identical.

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:27:40 PM EST] <bynw> so many good stories lost. even Susie's own works were lost when she passed :(
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:27:43 PM EST] <bynw> hi HoundMistress
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:28:01 PM EST] <KK> Hello, HoundMistress!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:28:06 PM EST] <HoundMistress> Hi
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:28:12 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Has Cameron picked up writing. would he ever pick of the gauntlet.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:28:20 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I hate that we'll never know what was planned for Book 3 of Scott's series, KK, though it would have had to be updated somewhat since the tech in the first two books is very early '90s tech, IIRC.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:28:20 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Someone dropped off several of the works belonging to KK, Deborah Turner Harris and Scott at a used bookstore near me. If it was one of you, then thanks. I'll have to go back for the rest soon!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:28:21 PM EST] <HoundMistress> Just remembered this is Sunday
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:28:43 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> HM, how are you doing?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:28:56 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Thank you for the recommendation.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:29:13 PM EST] <HoundMistress> I'm good, thanks. Was in Rehab almost 3 weeks. No access to computer.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:29:28 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Nice to have the books get picked up by an avid reader.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:29:33 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> Oh dear, rehab?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:29:42 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <TM> (Just managed to connect; was having dinner with family) I hope the non-Americans had a nice day on US Thanksgiving Day too!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:29:43 PM EST] <The_Bee> Did rehab do you good?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:29:46 PM EST] <HoundMistress> Knee surgery
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:29:53 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Marc, when you go back, check to see if they have any of her Deryni books. Wikipedia has the full listing so you can make sure to grab complete trilogies if they are on the shelves. Or if not, Amazon is also your friend.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:29:54 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Oh dear HM, How ar your doing.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:30:13 PM EST] <HoundMistress> Yes, I couldn't have gone straight home. Doing well now thanks

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:30:36 PM EST] <The_Bee> Hi DR!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:30:42 PM EST] <bynw> Hi TM and DR

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:30:47 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> Hi TM
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:30:50 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Please be carefull and don't fall, we are learning that is not a very good way to treat your knees.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:30:53 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> Hey DR
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:31:04 PM EST] <HoundMistress> Hi, TM
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:31:27 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I've been here but arguing with my computer about the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I won with the keyboard but the computer doesn't seem to be able to find the mouse and I ~~gave up~~ executed a tactical retreat to regroup later.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:31:35 PM EST] <HoundMistress> Don't worry, Laurnarose, I am doing my very best not to fall!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:31:49 PM EST] <KK> I totally sympathize on the knee issues. Just keep doing the exercises, and give yourself time to heal. It's a process.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:32:11 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Move gently but keep moving as much as you can.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:32:15 PM EST] <HoundMistress> Yes, and I'm doing much better now
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:32:17 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> KK, are warm back compresses helping at all.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:32:42 PM EST] <KK> Yes, heat for back and ice for knee.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:32:48 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> They did have Deryni. I was afraid to get sucked into something that might overwhelm me with its scope, so I tried to restrain myself from buying everything. Then I found out that [spoiler] Adam Sinclair is somewhat related to Arnault de Sinclair (seems obvious in hindsight), and I thought to myself that I had to go deeper. So, I bought the whole of the adept series. But now that I am with you all, I have another
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:32:48 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> reason to buy the deryni when I can.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:32:51 PM EST] <HoundMistress> I'm using my walker because the other knee is now screaming at me about abuse.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:33:35 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> So saith my aunt who had her knee replaced a couple of years ago, my uncle and mom who've each had to have a hip replaced in the last couple of years, and my cousin the DPT (doctor of physical therapy).
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:33:44 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> If you can find the time, Marc, it is ssooooooooo worth it.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:33:53 PM EST] <The_Bee> ssibling rivalry between HM's knees
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:33:57 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> One thing I love for anything that aches is a cream that you can get at Ace Hardware (among other places, but Ace always has it in stock) called Two Old Goats. It comes in a lotion or cream form, but I find the cream works better for me. And it doesn't smell strong like BenGay or other stuff that smells like horse liniment. It's got more of an herbal smell to it.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:34:57 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> If you use an e-reader, Early Bird Books often has various Deryni trilogies in omnibus editions for extremely reasonable prices. I think I got the Camber and Heirs trilogies for $4.99 per trilogy.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:35:02 PM EST] <HoundMistress> Ace Hardware, Two Old Goats
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:35:06 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Two old goats? Crazy name
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:35:29 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Isn't Two Old Goats made with goats' milk?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:35:31 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> @Laurna Yeah, it sounds crazy, but it works really well
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:35:32 PM EST] <KK> Oh, I hear you on that, HM. The unoperated knee is now much worse than the new one. I anticipate another surgery in the new year. And no more sliding out of bed to land on knees!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:35:36 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> It is, DR
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:35:46 PM EST] <The_Bee> Anyone know anything for rash or bug bites?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:35:50 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Goat's milk makes a great base for a gentle moisturizer.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:35:52 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> I hope you don't mind, but is there anyway that I can pray for the health of the members here? Or, to rephrase that, do you mind if when this is over, I pray for your health? I ask hesitatingly because I'm new here.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:36:13 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> We are holding you to that promise, KK. No sliding out of bed
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:36:13 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Afraid I don't know that much about practical medicine.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:36:23 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Cortisone, if you're not allergic and it's not contraindicated for other reasons. Benadryl lotion.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:36:41 PM EST] <The_Bee> Prayers or woodgies are welcome, marc.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:36:42 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Or weirdly, a dab of ammonia (and I do mean a dab, just a tiny bit) on a bug bite.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:36:43 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I know for my own part, prayers for good health are always appreciated. 🙂
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:36:50 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> Marc, that's very sweet. 🙂
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:37:20 PM EST] <bynw> and we have an entire board dedicated to prayer requests too: https://www.rhemuthcastle.com/index.php/board,54.0.html
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:37:29 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> It's easy when people are nice, like here. :)
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:37:33 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Prayers are lovely, and I for one appreciate your tactful request.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:37:44 PM EST] <bynw> no matter one's faith tradition
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:38:04 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Tact and kindness can be in short supply in the general world, so I love to see it.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:38:13 PM EST] <KK> Prayers are always welcome in this company. And Amen o the ammonia for bug bites, Bee.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:38:30 PM EST] <The_Bee> Thank you all
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:38:32 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> My mom was keeping a small glass of vodka beside her chair so she could dab all the mosquito bits this year. The mosquitos were particularly viscous this year.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:38:41 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> (Use a Q-tip to apply the ammonia.)
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:39:15 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I once bought a stick shaped container of bug bite stuff that was meant to be dabbed on, and realized once I opened it that it was simply ammonia. You couldn't mistake that smell for anything else.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:39:33 PM EST] * CambersGhost [discord] <Jerusha2> pictures mosquitoes lining up for a slug of vodka
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:39:44 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> I won't say she didn't allso sip the vodka on a occation but she swears they worked great on the bits.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:39:45 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Yeah, I did the same thing, Evie, ha!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:41:14 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I think it was called After Bite?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:41:15 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> DH's family used to use jar lids filled with beer to attract and kill garden slugs. So even if he didn't dislike the taste of beer, he would have an aversion to it because he associates it with the sight of drowned slugs. 😄
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:41:23 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Yes, I think that was it, DR!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:41:24 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> LOL DR
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:41:27 PM EST] <KK> The stick applicator is excellent. And when it goes dry, you can easily pry the tip off and refill it. Best bug bite remedy ever!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:41:38 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> True, the applicator is darn handy.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:41:41 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> To relate things back to the books, I still remember when in the Templar tales, the heroes had their worst enemy basically at gun point, and asked if he would repent of all the wrong he had done(and there was a lot), instead of just doing him in right there. If the world is too cold, it would be a sorry place.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:41:50 PM EST] <KK> Yes, After Bite!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:43:12 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I concur, Marc. There needs to be consequences for bad behavior, but those consequences need to leave room for contrition, repentance, and restoration.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:43:14 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I need to reread that series eventually. I only read those books once, and it's been a few years back, so the details are very foggy in my mind now.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:43:39 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Marc, even my beloved Alaric was asked to repent before they wanted to do him in(spoilers so I won't go further) but there is allittle bit of love in the word.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:44:25 PM EST] <The_Bee> Which Templar tale was that, marc? I thought I'd read then all, but I don't remember that scene.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:44:26 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> I appreciate the spoiler warning. Which book does this conqueror of Rome appear in?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:44:32 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> Seems like many of the best stories have redemption as a major plot point
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:44:55 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I kind of love one of the Jewish approaches to redemption, the one wherein you have to not only confess your wrongdoing but work on yourself so you don't do it again before you even think about making restorative overtures to whomever you wronged.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:45:12 PM EST] <HoundMistress> It's amazing what harm can be done by misguided apostles.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:45:12 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Pretty much all of the Deryni books in the Kelson time period and slightly before that.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:45:21 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Well, I say "tale" but I was actually thinking of the storming of Nogaret's castle in The Temple and The Crown. I would weep tears of joy for that to be adapted well
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:45:25 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Marc, even my beloved Alaric was asked to repent before they wanted to do him in(spoilers so I won't go further) but there is allittle bit of love in the world.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:46:16 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I think we would all weep tears of joy if any of KK's stories made it to the screen.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:46:30 PM EST] <KK> Me, too!

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:46:42 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I love a good redemption arc in fiction.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:46:45 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> It's easier for me to refer to every story involving mystics in the real world with KK's name attached as a Templar Tale, as I try to convince my friends to pick one of them up, any one. lol

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:49:57 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Yep. Made the account about a week ago. I'll try to make it, but I'm not quite at a point in my life where I know exactly what to expect every night. I'm not in a warzone or anything; it's just the last few weeks of graduate school.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:50:13 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Well, Arizona has to mess up DST for Mountain time.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:50:22 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Grad school IS a war zone, from what I hear.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:50:26 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Oh mercy, yes, I totally get that. My son is working on his Masters right now.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:50:33 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Wow Graduate school and you have time to escape into books. good for you
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:50:39 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> Graduate school can be a war zone
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:50:59 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I discovered KK's books while I was in grad school, but it was Christmas break.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:51:11 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> We'll see if I must repent of this time offf later, but for now, it's a very nice breather. 😄
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:51:15 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> though, maybe the book escape is a necessity for survival
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:51:18 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> I was in high school. So great...
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:51:30 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> So I pretty much devoured all 8 or 9 books in the Deryni series that were out at the time between Christmas and New Year.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:51:36 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> One of my friends is finishing a PhD in history, focusing on late antiquity and early middle ages Eastern Roman Empire.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:51:46 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Yes! I've been reading one story from an anthology every friday to take the edge off.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:51:53 PM EST] <The_Bee> I was a librarian when I read Deryni Rising.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:52:02 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Taking breaks between studies is actually healthier than trying to cram with no break, and can help you retain what you learn.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:52:27 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> That sounds like a cool area of study, DR
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:53:00 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> It is, and she's already an SCA expert on it (got her Laurel for it and everything). I took an icon-writing class from her when she still lived in this area.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:53:08 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> If you decide to try the Deryni books, the best starting place IMO is the very first three books KK wrote: Deryni Rising, Deryni Checkmate, and High Deryni.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:53:31 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> Agree with Evie
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:53:34 PM EST] <bynw> i totally agree with that Evie
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:53:38 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Agreed, and then it all builds up from there.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:53:44 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Gotcha. I gotta get to them at some point. :)
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:54:32 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Keep in mind that Deryni Rising is her very first novel, but that said, it's a pretty darn good first novel. It definitely kept me wanting to read more. 🙂
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:54:34 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> If you buy the post 2007-ish versions, they've been updated.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:54:39 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> It's so cool to hear how KK's work found you all
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:54:51 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I like going by internal chronology but please do not take me as an authority since I am a weirdo who read *Deryni Magic* first (which is less a novel and more a companion book to explain and explore the magical systems in the books).
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:55:44 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Those first books I read were all dumped in my lap by a friend who said "You need to read this." I'm forever grateful she forced me to read her books. By the time I read the first few, I knew I wanted my own set.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:55:51 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Going by internal chronology, you would start with *Camber of Culdi* but I don't really recommend that route if heavier subject matter bugs you. The Heirs of St. Camber trilogy is beautifully written but the events therein are truly tragic.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:56:58 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> The Camber books are also more densely written, and have a cast of characters as long as my arm. They are really good books, but I think it's easier to ease into the world and learn about it with the Deryni books (or at least those first three) and then go back and read the earlier history that led up to those events.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:57:19 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> I am not one to criticize . . . for how someone chooses to read books. I should be writing this advice down! I hope the other patrons of the bookstore don't know a gem when they see it. Or maybe I do, since then there will be even more of us.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:57:58 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> And that's the order in which KK wrote them, and if you go by date of publication, you get to watch KK's writing develop, which is fun too.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:58:09 PM EST] <bynw> the chats are all preserved on the forum marc_du_temple
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:59:01 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> You'll have the advantage in that even though most if not all were on the bestseller lists back in the day, many readers nowadays have never heard of them, so there isn't as much competition to grab them off used bookstore shelves. That said, there are the people who read them as they came out and love them, and want to buy them to complete their set or replace missing copies, an <clipped messag
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:59:02 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> d that's who you will be competing against when looking for them.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:59:03 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I picked up *Deryni Magic* at a book sale in a repurposed Hechinger's (hardware store along the line of Lowe's or Home Depot) because the cover looked cool and I needed one more book to hit the next tier of reduced prices.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:59:06 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Speaking of chronology and similar details, I think a big part of what makes these adventures feel real are all the details regarding little things like how the protagonist gets from point A to point B, or the realistic progression of aging.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:59:09 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Not sorry at all.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [7:59:26 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> BRB, the dishwasher finished.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:00:29 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> If you have trouble finding print versions of the books at your bookstore, I highly recommend the e-book version if you have a Kindle or other e-reader.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:01:01 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I love the e-books because they are searchable, so sometimes if I want to go back and find a specific scene or reference, I can do a keyword search in the book I think it's in and find it in seconds.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:01:11 PM EST] <KK> Marc, what graduate degree are you finishing?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:01:25 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> I like having them (or any book, really) with me at any given time.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:01:26 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> it feels weird reading the first Scottish Templar book after the second, not only for the obvious reason, but because Arnault and Torquil really are twenty or thirty years younger in every way. It's like... looking at old photos of family members or something and recalling what they were like.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:02:22 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> History. I hope to work in museums at a high level before possibly earning a doctorate. I just feel called to the workforce sooner than later, I must admit.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:02:24 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> I origianlly picked up Deryni Rising in a used book store in high school. then I found they were published to the Scinece Fiction book Club and every time a book came out I purchased it from there.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:03:27 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> I got mine at the high school bookshop when they first came out
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:03:57 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> That's very good!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:04:00 PM EST] <KK> One reason I started writing trilogies, and hopping timelines, was because it enabled me to work with different characters for a few years, so they didn't go stale and I didn't get bored with them.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:04:41 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> What's fun for me is that I read the early Deryni books in my early 20s, and my favorite characters were 29 and 30 in the first one, I think. They came across as older and more mature. Now I have kids close to that age, and when I read the books, they come across as young guys. I mean, sure, they are mature and have a lot of weight on their shoulders, but they're definitely young. 😄
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:05:25 PM EST] <KK> And I got my Masters in history also, which stood me in good stead as the Deryni universe took shape.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:05:25 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Which area of History are you focusing on, Marc?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:05:28 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> That's very clever, ma'am!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:05:29 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Love that, KK
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:06:32 PM EST] <KK> Marc, you don't need to ma'am me. We're all friends here.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:06:45 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Sorry. Force of habit, KK.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:07:20 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> It is nice to hear the respect though. good for you Marc
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:07:43 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Are you by any chance from the South? Because that's a habit that is absolutely ingrained if you are raised in these parts. 😂
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:08:02 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> You might think I'm making this up for the sake of a story, but when I got to the first chapter of Temple & Stone a few days ago, I had a little panic attack, because in a story I am working on for myself, I paired up two guys named Arnold and Jay as . . . essentially police partners. I was relieved to realize that Arnault and Brian Jay are not friends.😅
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:08:08 PM EST] <KK> Are you in the South, Marc? I grew up to use ma'am and sir to those senior to me. Of cousse, that was back in the dark ages. ;-
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:08:49 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> I am in the South now, but I'm technically a Yankee by birth, as my friends call me sometimes.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:09:01 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Oh, that's still customary, KK, or at least it was as recently as my kids' childhood. All their friends Ma'amed me. 😄
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:09:05 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> Yeah, I was exposed to the ma'aming and sirring when I moved to Texas way back in the day.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:09:40 PM EST] <The_Bee> I got ma'amed in Michigan.

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:10:24 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> At least for active forum members. Don't know about the inactive ones.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:11:00 PM EST] <KK> What's your university, Marc?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:11:17 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> I may have been Ma'amed once or twice at work, but if so it is not that memmeroble. just not something that is said out here in the west.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:13:20 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Oddly enough, talking about history and universities just reminded me, I need to turn in a book at our university library tomorrow. 😄
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:14:47 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I'm the one (or one of the ones) in northern Florida, but I grew up in Charleston, SC, which is consistently voted the politest/most welcoming city in the US, and the ma'am/sir thing happens on autopilot for me (and for the Pod-Child, who's had patients tell her not to call them "sir," they worked for a living!).
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:14:50 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> DR, I'm trying to work out what happened in 1286. That's well after Kelson's time. 😉
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:15:03 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> It's my original Discord user number.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:15:30 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Ah. Well, that won't stop me from finding something of historical importance that happened that year. LOL!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:15:51 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I am irked about the way Discord changed their username policy because it's going to make it easier to spoof someone's account, so as a small act of protest, I'm leaving the number in my general-purpose username.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:15:52 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Liberty. Some people give it a rough time for this or that, but if you could meet the history professors, you would see that that much, at least, can be trusted firmly. With a bit of southern flair, perhaps.

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:16:46 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Oh, I'm sure plenty of historical interest happened that year, somewhere on this little blue marble. 😄
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:01 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> OK, that's not too far from here. Two or three hours, I think?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:18 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I still think we need to find a central location for KK-Con someday.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:33 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <capngramma> Hello. Sorry to be so late, but I'm helping some folks build a sorter in minecraft
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:39 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I still vote for Williamsburg.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:40 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Or at least a KK-convenient location, and the rest of us can just cope with getting there as best we can.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:43 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> Hiya CapnG
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:48 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Hi CapG
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:49 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Hi CapnGramma!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:49 PM EST] <The_Bee> HiCapnG
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:17:54 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> Hi CapnG
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:18:17 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> I would gladly go to a KK-Con
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:18:21 PM EST] <KK> Ah, good university. My brother-in-law is working on his doctorate in history; lives in Burbank, and teaches history at one of the state universities im SoCal.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:18:24 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> Of course, travel for me has gotten to be quite difficult, so I'm not sure I'd even be able to make it to KK Retreat/Con.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:18:29 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> dressed as Adam Sinclair or something.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:18:36 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Williamsburg would rock! That's on my bucket list of places I want to visit someday, with or without KK there as incentive to go there.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:19:22 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I've been once but didn't get to do all the historical touristing around because I was on a chorus trip to Busch Gardens. (Rode my first rollercoaster, wish my spine would still let me ride them.)
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:19:35 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Would you all consider the artwork of him kneeling with the sword inside the cover of the third book to be accurate? In the best way, he looks like if James Bond prayed the rosary
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:19:49 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> I went there with the Girl Scouts
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:20:15 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <azdesertrose> I suspect Adam would consider that a compliment and Ximena would agree with you. ;D
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:20:25 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Wait...there's a third Temple book? *scans my bookshelf and only sees two...I think****
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:20:38 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> sorry, Adept book
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:20:39 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Or do you mean the Adept books?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:20:42 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Ah. OK.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:21:49 PM EST] <KK> I like Williamsburg. Love all the history there. Staunton also has heavy history connected with it, and wonderful architecture.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:22:08 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I'm still trying to re-collect those. I haven't read them since...um...the '90s? I think I found the first two in ebook form but don't have the full series yet. Or maybe I'm just confused. I do seem to have a memory like Swiss cheese these days.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:22:31 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> I'm actually glad there is no third Temple book, aside from the anthologies. I don't think anything could top the finale of the second.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:22:46 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Plus, all the loose ends were tied up.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:23:02 PM EST] <KK> Had a lot of fun writing that.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:23:17 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> The history that can be found in Virginia is truly wonderful.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:24:08 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> I'm glad to hear that! It reads that way.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:25:56 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> having coincidentally read up on European alchemy about half a year before reading that, I found characters like Mercurius to be very . . . well, I wouldn't call him pleasant, but very engaging!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:26:21 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> KK, are all of the Deryni books out in ebook form? I think I own the full series in ebook, but I'm not certain. And what about audiobook? I think some were still left undone in audio, last I checked.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:27:25 PM EST] <KK> Trinity Episcopal Church, here in Staunton, was host to the Virginia assembly, when they were forced to flee Williamsburg. (They've got a gazillion Tiffany windows, too.)
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:27:43 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> wow
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:28:49 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I think I am still missing audiobooks for the Camber books.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:29:32 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Though if they have the same narrator as the Histories of King Kelson, I might never listen to them. 😅 (I loved the first narrator, though.)
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:30:37 PM EST] <KK> Marc, have you read Lammas Night? One of my favorites. And I was delighted to have John Graham make an appearance in the Adept series.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:30:58 PM EST] <KK> I think they're all avilable in e-book format.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:31:33 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> I have not, but it's on my metaphorical christmas list!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:31:45 PM EST] <KK> I think all of them are now in Audio format.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:31:57 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Yeah, I just checked the covers, and I do have them in e-book, but I'm pretty sure I am missing some of them in audio
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:32:45 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <Jerusha2> Alas, I must go. Have a good week, everyone, and KK, I hope your knees continue to improve.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:32:57 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <capngramma> g'night
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:32:58 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> night Jerusha, takae care
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:33:00 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> That could be a game-changer, but personally, I do prefer to hold books and read them in my head. I have had good luck with the audiobooks I have listened to, I admit. Mort by Terry Pratchett sounds great on Spotify, for example.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:33:03 PM EST] <bynw> night Jerusha
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:33:12 PM EST] <The_Bee> Good night and good week, Jerusha
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:33:29 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> Goodnight, Jerusha!

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:33:59 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Good night!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:34:05 PM EST] <marc_du_temple> Pleased to meet you.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:34:11 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> I prefer written books also (whether in printed copies or ebook form), but sometimes they hit differently when you hear the audiobook version of a story.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:34:46 PM EST] <KK> Time for me to go as well. Back is complaining. I hope to have a better progress report by next week. Meanwhile, everyone have a great week. And Marc, delighted to welcome you to this merry little band.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:34:53 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <evie.delacourt> So it can be interesting to compare both, or have the ability (if using something like Kindle) to switch from the written text to audio if you need both hands free for something.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:35:05 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <stnezz> I still have a hard time grasping audiobooks, my eyes understand things much better than my ears.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:35:06 PM EST] <bynw> Zoom chat next week KK?
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:35:10 PM EST] <CambersGhost> [discord] <laurnarose> Be Healthy,KK and have a wonderful week.

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:35:53 PM EST] * KK steps onto her Portal, waves good night, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:36:06 PM EST] <bynw> remember the chat is available 24 hours a day ... if someone is around to chat with

[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:36:24 PM EST] <KK> Ta-ta!
[Sunday, November 26, 2023] [8:36:33 PM EST] Quit KK has left this server (Quit: Client closed).
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
