He'll spontaneously start conversations in Spanish if he is out in public and runs into Latino people (like at an outdoor community picnic he and Mom went to last summer), and they are usually startled to hear an 85 year old obviously gringo dude speaking fluently in Spanish. He's more fluent than my mom is, and she grew up on an island where a Spanish-based dialect is natively spoken!
