on every post under the memer's name that wrote it are two links

one says Smite and the other is Karma

They both do the same thing. It's exactly the same as a like on facebook. except that smite is an unlike.

Everyone's Karma starts at 0

For every post that someone clicks Karma on it increases that members Karma by 1
If anyone smites them, then that will decrease the overall Karma by 1 as well.

I know that the next version of the forum software which isn't out yet changes the name from Karma to Likes and removes the negative smite option

I don't see the Karma/Smite buttons. Are they supposed to be on the left side of the page under the name of the poster?

Under the Karma, which is under the portrait you will see an Applaud button and a smite button. Those add or subtract from the karma count.
