I just finished this book and recommend it to those interested in English history.  It has a lot of detail of life around the time of Chaucer so
it's a bit later than Deryni times.  The characters and most events are based on real happenings.  It also resonates with Game of Thrones since
it's about the intrigues between the Duke of Lannister (I mean Lancaster) and the king whose heraldry is a stag.
