MIDDLE SCHOOL!!!
« on: March 05, 2012, 04:35:45 pm »
As you may remember, back in August I took a job with the Kanawha County Schools as Librarian/Media Specialist at South Charleston Middle School.

I was excited to move my career in a new direction, and it was time to leave the old job, as I had been there nearly 10 years and was getting a bit stale.  However, I wish I could have held out for a different new one!

Middle school children are little heathens.  Especially the girls.  After a few months of dealing with them, I was a complete nervous wreck.  "Situational anxiety disorder with panic attacks" was what my doctor called it, and he put me on medical leave with a recommendation that the school system find me another placement.

Today I was informed that my sick leave had run out and that there was no other position for me.  Accordingly, I was to report back to SCMS.

For the sake of my health, I resigned.

Fortunately, I have other things I can do besides teach school.  I've signed up with Adecco for paralegal work.  My friend at the public library informs me that there will be some retirements there.  I have feelers out at the State government and some of the local colleges.

Wish me luck.

Luck.

I agree with you about kids that age but its often the parents that are the bigger problem. The "my child couldnt possibly do anything wrong, and i am going to sue becasue you are hurtig my childs future" types.

When my daughter was in 7th grade, the teachers called us in to talk about whether she should stay in an advanced class becasue she was so shy.  After 5 minutes I realized the teachers were mainly afraid of how we would react, while I was so well trained by Dominican nuns that I was afraid to question the teachers' judgement.  We had a good discussion once we both got past the conditioning, but I felt sorry for what the teachers had to put up with.

I temped with Adecco in another city some years ago, and when I went into the local office they found my records still in their system; all they have to do is update my information and I'm good to go.

I wonder at the authors of popular books and articles that depict teenage girls as fragile little Ophelias--have they ever spent any time with REAL girls?

Oh, there are those too, and even the more aggressive sorts are usually masking a boatload of insecurities.

I went to coeducational schools all the way; my undergraduate institution is the second oldest coeducational college in the US; but I'm beginning to wonder if single-sex education might not be such a bad idea.

I attended a single gender schools all through my highschool years.  Elkhound you have my deepest sympathy.

I was at one time being encouraged to get a degree in education so that I could teach mathematics in an all girls school.  I still sometimes get nightmares about the prospect - even though it was almost twenty years ago.

Elkhound have you taken some vocational guidance?
