Title: Familia Oomporum Loomporum
Post by: tmcd on November 17, 2022, 10:55:26 PM
("-a" makes me think first declension, genitive plural, but I know little about Latin. Please let me know whether "of Oompa Loopas" should be in the dative or something. Edited from "-parum" to "-porum" per below.)

There was a discussion on the Discord channel about descriptions of characters. Fruit suggested that I save it in fanfic.

Fruit: Oh.  Huh.  I never cared what the characters looked like - when I've had to describe my dnd characters for games, I always focused on the clothes, armor, weaponry, odd mannerisms, etc, but not hair color, eye color, skin color, or anything.  Picture them orange with polkadots, it was all the same to me, but my character is carrying a greataxe not a greatsword, because that was really important to the characters possible arcs....

I mean, I never thought any of the characters looked like freckled tall oompa-loompas, but I don't think I'd really care if they did....

There's a thought - Willy Wonka Deryni crossover.

Evie the Verbose: Great, now I'm mentally picturing Oompa Loompas!

Me:

[Alroy's regents as Oompa-Loompas]

Oompa loompa doompety doo
I've got a perfect murder for you
Oompa loompa doompety dee
If you are wise you'll listen to me

We're getting wood to put in a pile
Deryni wizards are evil and vile
We'll hunt them down in field and hall
Set a flame and slaughter them all!

Wonderful tmcd.

It is a very very long while since I did "A" level Latin ( not sure what the US equivalent is, but in my day in the UK you specialised in 3 subjects between 16 and 18 at Advanced level) but I think Oompa Loompa is either feminine singular or neuter plural. The latter sounds more likely so I think the genitive plural  "of the Oompa Loompas" should be Oomporum Loomporum.
