Title: A future game
Post by: Bynw on August 20, 2022, 10:28:28 AM

Hello all.

I am planning on running another Deryni-based game. I have yet to decide if this will be a play-by-post game (like Ghosts of the Past) or a live game that would be played either on IRC, Zoom, or Discord.

So if are interested please follow this thread. Ask questions. See what I post about them here.

At this point here is what I know about this game.

  • It doesn't yet have a name.
  • It doesn't take place in KK's 11 Kingdoms, this will be it's own unique setting.
  • It does have Deryni.
  • I don't know which game system will be used. It might be the same as Ghosts of the Past or it could be different.

I am currently working on the setting more than choosing a game system for it in the beginning. Once I have the ends and outs of the setting down. Then I'll worry about the game system (that's the rules.)

So a bit more about the setting:

  • Not the 11 Kingdoms or any world of KK's
  • Deryni are present and not the minority but relations between Human and Deryni can vary
  • The time period is more like the Renaissance than the Middle Ages
  • Due to the high Deryni population, Deryni Magic is taken for granted
  • Transfer Portals are common place
  • Healers can be found everywher
  • Scholas for Deryni are everywhere
  • The Church is still very important and usually not anti-Deryni

Well one thing is for certain. I won't be using the same game system that was used for Ghosts of the Past. It's just a bit tad too complex for that easy system. (unless something changes anyway)

Hello all,

I am still working on the twin projects of the setting and game system rules and it's coming along.

The game rules will be based on the Fudge rules from DAG for the Deryni but there will be differences.

Fudge uses what it calls a ladder to rank how powerful everything is in the game. This is one of the changes that we will be doing. Instead of the basic ladder presented in DAG we will be using this one instead:

Legendary +8
Epic +7
Fantastic +6
Superb +5
Great +4
Very Good +3
Good +2
Fair +1
Average 0
Mediocre -1
Poor -2

Likewise, we will only be using 4 basic Attributes plus an Attribute that determines how powerful a Deryni character can be.

Vigor
Dex
Presence
Reason

Well with some debate and research. The basic attributes have been expanded and renamed to:

  • Strength
  • Health
  • Agility
  • Reason
  • Presence

And with some more debate and working on this project. The ladder is now going to be:

Legendary +7
Epic +6
Fantastic +5
Superb +4
Great +3
Very Good +2
Good +1
Fair 0
Mediocre -1
Poor -2

And a bit about the setting aka the world in which the characters will live and die:

The Great Canan Empire fell without an heir generations ago. The Empire's high lords now rule their lands has independent kings and warlords. All vying for supremacy in the hopes of re-uniting the old fallen empire under their House and banner.

Trade continues among the successor states has it always has by both tradition and treaty. But wars and skirmishes are common among the great houses. Peace is only a lull in fighting.

Although the lands, people, and lords, all share a common culture, language, and faith. They can be deeply divided in the succession of the old Empire and due to old rivalries between the Houses.

There are five major regions. Each a kingdom in their own right. Each with a claim to rule the others.

The largest and oldest bears the name of the old Empire. The Kingdom of Canan, rules by the great House Adan from the old Imperial capital of Montre.

There is the powerful Deryni Kingdom to the east of Canan called Allengi. Ruled by House Baelyf from their mountain stronghold Kirsh.

South of these two Kingdoms is Stonemont. House Venable rules the settlements of this region. Never staying in one place the great Lord moves from place to place all the time.

Further south and eastward of Stonemont is a loose confederation of Larethian Tribes. They have celebrated the fall of the old Empire as they were always considered to be 2nd class citizens. They will kill anyone that enters their territory without being invited.

And lastly, to the west of all of these locations is the old Imperial frontier. Plains and untamed forests to the horizon and beyond.

Since I will be using Fudge as the game system. And will be heavily borrowing from DAG. It would be handy to have if you are interested in playing.

If you are interested in buying it. Here is the link https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/327244/Deryni-Adventure-Game

So in this upcoming game. I am going to limit players to being one of the three types of characters.

1. Human
2. Deryni
3. Empowered Human

No other options currently available. But maybe in the future.

Since I will be using DAG as a base there are differences of course.

1. The Setting, it's not KK's 11 Kingdoms
2. The Fudge Ladder (see above)
3. The names and number of Attributes (see above)
4. DAG uses what is called 5 point Fudge, I prefer using the objective approach in chosing character traits.
5. Deryni Powers will be expanded.

i have a poll up asking if you would be interested in playing this game LIVE and i'm going to explain what i mean by that term.

a live game could be played in the chat room. it could be played over Zoom. it could be played on Discord in a voice channel (like the crafting meeting)

If the Atlantic was narrower I would love to play in a live game but the time difference is just too much for me.

Quote from: Fruit on October 27, 2022, 02:37:12 PMI don't know if I have the time for any game - though I love the idea of one.  Even if I find the time, scheduling is going to be wonky for me - my schedule's all over the place at the moment.

Is there a way people can read transcripts of the last game that was played?  Was it live?

The last game was Play-by-Post here on the forum: https://www.rhemuthcastle.com/index.php/board,134.0.html and @Laurna recently spearheaded an editing project (with contributions from the other players) to create a PDF of the story that the game told. She may be able to send you the files.

I have a feeling my brain works too slowly for a live game.  I have to think about things for too long.   ;)

I agree Jerusha.  I even find I can not read more than a chapter or so of a book at a time because I like to contemplate on what is going on before I move on the the next part. If you read it all at once, you have no time to think about the possibilities.

I loved they way we played the game, but that was so all consumming for years that I am not sure I can devote that much time again. but a live D&D type game doesn't give enough time for contemplation. At least not for me.

But I am sure some people on the forum would love a live game.

well the group has spoken. and i have heard you. the rules i am currently working on work best for a live game rather than a play by post sort of game.

because i want to finish this project i will. and then i will convert it over to Tiny Dungeon, the system used for Ghosts of the Past. it will be a fun project to do.

after that. then i will see if anyone wants to play.

Well as far as the rules go. They are pretty much done since all I had to do was tweak a few things from Ghosts of the Past.

The story idea is ready. The finer details are fuzzy but they don't need to be fully detailed out because that would leave no room for role-playing.

So as a reminder the following information is true:

1) This game will use the same rules as Ghosts of the Past. With a few tweaks but if someone played in that game. They could easily play in this one.

2) This game has Deryni and Empowered Humans.

3) This game is NOT set in the 11 Kingdoms at any time period. It just happens to have Deryni.

4) The time period is more like the Renaissance than the Middle Ages.

5) Due to the high Deryni population (they are not a minority), Deryni Magic is taken for granted.

6) Transfer Portals are common place.

7) Healers can be found everywhere.

8) Scholas for Deryni are everywhere.

9) The Church is still very important and like KK's Christian and usually not anti-Deryni or anti-Deryni Magic.

So is anyone interested in playing?

I'll have to pass this time, Bynw.  I don't think I will have the time to do it justice.  I will be following along, though!

Bynw, I am undecided at this time.  I have a lot of family commitments coming up. If I do play it will be as a tag along character not a main character. At least for the time being. I do hope someone who has not played before would like to be the leading forcing.

That's perfectly fine.

3-4 players is all that are needed.
