[19:06] --> KK has joined this channel.
[19:06] <Evie> Just got home
[19:06] <derynifanatic64> hi KK
[19:06] <DesertRose> I had a feeling if I said that, she'd show up.
[19:06] <the_Bee> hi kk
[19:06] <DesertRose> Hi KK.
[19:06] <Evie> Hi, KK
[19:06] <jemler> you're thinking loudly too, DR
[19:06] <DesertRose> Evidently.  :D
[19:06] <Evie> Looks like I got home just in time for the main event. ;-)
[19:06] <jemler> think of the devil
[19:07] <derynifanatic64> :(jemler
[19:07] <DesertRose> Evie, I said "I wonder where Evie is" about ten seconds before you showed up.
[19:07] <KK> Helolo, all.
[19:07] <jemler> hi kk
[19:07] <Evie> LOL, DR
[19:07] * Evie says hello and offers you a goblet of Fianna wine
[19:07] <DomMelchior> Hi there KK
[19:07] <jemler> thabk you, evie
[19:07] <Festil> ello KK
[19:07] <jemler> if you're trying to get me drunk, it'll work! :)
[19:08] <jojo> Hi KK
[19:08] <KK> Evie, I was surprised to see that mini-Duncan is back in action.
[19:08] <the_Bee> How was your week, KK?
[19:08] <Evie> LOL! Yeah.
[19:08] <KK> It was ok.
[19:08] <Evie> Where are our intrepid heroes this week?
[19:09] <derynifanatic64> next weekend is a 3 day weekend!!
[19:09] <KK> But I've lost my link to action-Duncan.  What I'd bookmarked took me to mini-Duncan instead.
[19:09] <Evie> LOL!  Hang on, let me get my browser open and I can send you the Action Duncan link again.
[19:09] <KK> Hi, Melchior.
[19:09] <jemler> had fun here thursday. got back home from dialysis, and there was a 3-4 ft black snake on my ramp!
[19:09] <DesertRose> EEEP!!
[19:10] <Evie> Was he glad for the easy access, jemler?
[19:10] <KK> At least they're friendly.
[19:10] <DomMelchior> (bows deeply) G'evening, My Lady.
[19:10] <KK> How is Rory the wonder-hound?
[19:10] <jemler> my sister manged to get it. i couldn't get close without running the poor thing over.
[19:11] <Evie> My DS desperately wants a pet snake and DD wants a mouse or some other rodent, but I've told both that a pet that would make a good kitteh snack is a very bad idea.
[19:11] <DomMelchior> Wonderful.  Right now he's napping alongside his other daddy.  It's too cute
[19:11] <the_Bee> not to mention a mouse would make a good snake snack.
[19:11] <KK> I transported another petit Basset yesterday; but Warner is cuter.
[19:11] <Evie> What breed is Rory again?
[19:11] <DesertRose> Ugh.  My ex-husband had a pet snake while we were married, and I HATED having a snake in my apartment.  UGH UGH UGH.
[19:11] <DesertRose> I do NOT like snakes.
[19:11] <derynifanatic64> what did everyone think of the season finale of "Once Upon a Time" last week?
[19:12] <DomMelchior> He's a Pharaoh Hound
[19:12] <KK> I'm not crazy about snakes either.
[19:12] <DesertRose> Kittehs are much more fun.
[19:12] <KK> He looks like he just stepped off the wall of an Egyptian tomb!
[19:12] <the_Bee> No spoilers, please, I've recorded it, but I'm behingd in my viewing.
[19:12] <KK> It was a pretty cool episode.
[19:13] <DesertRose> Once I'm working and have the money, I think I'm going to go to the animal shelter and adopt a kitteh.
[19:13] <derynifanatic64> Jim Stafford had a big hit with "Spiders and Snakes"
[19:13] <DesertRose> I remember that song.
[19:13] <Evie> KK, the Action Figure project thread  begins at http://www.rhemuthcastle.com/index.php?topic=844.0
[19:13] <DesertRose> Vaguely.
[19:13] <bynw> Hiyas KK
[19:13] <DomMelchior> PH's are way cool dogs.  Been kept purebreed on Malta since the Phonicians left them, so they say.
[19:13] <DesertRose> KK, to make the picture viewing easier, I've done up a gallery for finished products; Shiral has posted the Hagios Iob project there.
[19:14] <Evie> Looking up Pharoah Hound...cool looking pooch!
[19:15] <DomMelchior> Thanks
[19:15] <Evie> DR, I figure the Mini-castle will probably get posted in the finished projects folder first, although I'll probably put action figures as well once each has a complete outfit to showcase.
[19:15] <DesertRose> That's fine.
[19:15] <the_Bee> How many action figures do you have so far, Evie?
[19:15] <KK> People are getting really inspired with projects as summer approaches.
[19:16] <DesertRose> I just figured I'd point KK at the gallery, if she wanted to see Shiral's Hagios Iob, because I always had trouble getting the Google presentation to load.
[19:16] <Evie> Let's see...Duncan, Alaric, Denis, Richenda for canonical characters, and Helena and Sextus for fanfic characters.
[19:16] <the_Bee> My only project is strengthening my legs enough to pedal my new adult trike up-hill.
[19:17] <Evie> I'll have a week or so of vacation coming up soon, so I might get more done on the project(s) then, though  with my parents in town,it depends on if they want to sit around the house or go places.
[19:17] <DesertRose> :)
[19:17] <derynifanatic64> parents come first
[19:17] <Evie> I used to know someone who had an adult trike, which I loved borrowing as a teen, but she lived in a very level area.  No hills aside from anthills.
[19:18] --> Jerusha has joined this channel (Mibbit@A2BA3E.70F13F.2B4151.84F172).
[19:18] <jemler> hi jerusha
[19:18] <Evie> Hi, Jerusha
[19:18] <derynifanatic64> hi jerusha
[19:18] * Evie says hello and offers you a goblet of Fianna wine
[19:18] <the_Bee> hi jerusha
[19:18] <jojo> hello jerusha
[19:18] <Jerusha> Hi Everyone!
[19:18] <DesertRose> KK, Festil and I were having a discussion earlier this afternoon; is there some dividing line between the Deryni and/or Haldane powers that one can use more or less instinctively and the ones that must be trained?
[19:18] <DomMelchior> Hi J
[19:18] <DesertRose> Hi Jerusha.
[19:19] <Jerusha> Oh, nice wine!
[19:19] <DesertRose> It seems like Morgan and Duncan can do an awful lot just by faking it 'til they make it, for example.
[19:20] <the_Bee> Jehana managed one good blast on instinct, at Kelson's duel with Charissa.
[19:20] <DesertRose> Yup, that's another good example.
[19:20] <Jerusha> Creating a portal would have to be trained, I would think, while handfire would be instinctive.
[19:20] <KK> Part of the secret is knowing that certain things can be done.  Then one knows to try to do it, and practice increases ability.
[19:21] --> Alkari has joined this channel (Mibbit@OWIRCN-455a6c12.optusnet.com.au).
[19:21] <DesertRose> Ah, okay.
[19:21] <derynifanatic64> I just saw that Robin Gibb has died
[19:21] <DesertRose> Hi Alkari.
[19:21] <DesertRose> Oh no.  That's sad.
[19:21] <the_Bee> hi alkari
[19:21] <Alkari> Hi everyone.
[19:21] <Jerusha> Hi Alkari!
[19:21] <jemler> in Deryni Magic, handfire was one of the earliest spells Deryni children learned.
[19:21] <jojo> Hi Alkari
[19:21] <jemler> hi alkari
[19:21] <Alkari> I slept in !
[19:21] <Evie> Hi Alkari
[19:21] <derynifanatic64> hi alkari
[19:21] <the_Bee> slept in what?
[19:22] <DesertRose> Like how Morgan knew that Deryni had at one point in history known how to Heal, so he just gave it a shot and lo and behold it worked?
[19:22] <DomMelchior> In the case of ritual activation (such as the Haldane power assumption) a certain number of abilities could be "hardwired" into the transfer, provided the original developer of the ritual knew them him/herself, or at least so I would suppose.
[19:22] <KK> Bee, does your trike have gears?
[19:23] <the_Bee> I don't know.  How do I tell?
[19:23] <Evie> KK, I'm trying to work out the description of Duncan's armor that he wore in the Mearan War so I can re-create it.  From the description, it seems to be leather and plate, edged with McLain colors and with an embroidered badge on the chest....
[19:23] <the_Bee> All I know is a pedaled nearly a mile before soeone told me my brakes were on.
[19:24] <DesertRose> I bet that was tiring, Bee.
[19:24] <Jerusha> That would be hard work, Bee!
[19:24] <jemler> i figure the heardwired anilities would be shielding, truth-say, mind-see, and the need to center to access most of the higher abilities. Kelson needed to be taught how to kill with his powerd.
[19:24] <the_Bee> Yes.  I was 45' late for church.
[19:24] <Evie> but in terms of cut, would it be more similar to http://www.entertainmentearth.com/prodinfo.asp?number=UC888504++STANDARD (brigandine) or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brigandine (the jack of plates pictured on this page)?
[19:24] <KK> Are there little levers on the handlebar grips?  One would be the brakes (maybe one on each side), and a gear shift would be probably farther up on one of hte handlebars.
[19:24] <Evie> pedaling against the brakes would be hard, I'd imagine!
[19:25] <the_Bee> brakes on each handlebar.  I'll have to look for gears.
[19:25] <the_Bee> ON my first test ride I tipped over 3 times.  I was bruised for over a week.
[19:25] <DesertRose> Ouch.
[19:26] <Evie> ow
[19:26] <derynifanatic64> :(
[19:26] <the_Bee> There are little levers somewhere, but one is for folding the trike up.
[19:27] <Evie> My a/c is off at the moment (the coils froze and DH is doing repairs), and it's so hot the cats don't want to sit on me.
[19:27] <the_Bee> My chest still hurtswhen I sneeze of cough or blow my nose.
[19:27] <DesertRose> EEK, Evie.
[19:27] <DesertRose> I hate not having AC in the car, let alone the house.
[19:27] <the_Bee> All I have is a fan.
[19:27] <Alkari> Me too - and good cross ventilation
[19:27] <jojo> ooo...
[19:27] <derynifanatic64> hold one arm over your chest when you do those things--it'll make it a little easier
[19:28] <derynifanatic64> against your chest
[19:28] <Jerusha> It's 30 degrees C right now, so we are thinking of turning the a/c on.
[19:28] <KK> Couldn't get the first link to work, but the jacks in the second link look good--either one.  THey wouldn't be quite so form-fitting, though.  Think of the armor in Game of Thrones.
[19:28] <Evie> We've got a little cross ventilation going, but even with that, it's pretty darn hot right now, even with all lights turned off and with a cathedral ceiling.
[19:28] <the_Bee> inddors or outdoors, Evie?
[19:28] <DesertRose> No cooking tonight, I guess?  :D
[19:28] <the_Bee> I mean Jerusha
[19:29] <Evie> LOL! I think I'm destined to download and watch GoT, aren't I?  :D
[19:29] <Jerusha> Both, unfortunately.
[19:29] <Alkari> LOL - are you, Evie?
[19:29] <Evie> If I have to watch it to find out how Duncan's dressed, yeah. :D
[19:29] <Alkari> Do you watch GoT, KK?
[19:30] <derynifanatic64> i'll be getting the first 2 discs of Game of Thrones from netflix this coming week
[19:30] <KK> Yes, for the past couple of months--last episode of first season and everything since.  I've gotten hooked.
[19:30] <Evie> Can you see this image, KK?  http://www.korrigart.com/shop/img/p/233-439-large.jpg
[19:30] <Alkari> Me too!!
[19:31] <KK> Bee, are you getting over pneumonia, or did you bruise your ribs when you fell off?
[19:31] <the_Bee> I just canceled my HBO and Showcase.  I never watched them, so why waste the money?
[19:31] <Alkari> I have only just got cable TV, so watched the first series in 2 long sessions on DVD
[19:31] <DomMelchior> They make a patch for that I think....or maybe it's medicated gum...  :)
[19:32] <jemler> you take gum and soak it in bourbon or something?
[19:32] <the_Bee> AFAIK, I just bruised myself. Anything that puts pressure on my chest hurts, but my doctor said my heart and lungs sound ok.
[19:32] <KK> Yes, Evie.  Pretty good brigandine.
[19:32] <Alkari> Ouch - and there's nothing they can really do for cracked or even broken ribs anyway
[19:32] <Jerusha> Ouch, Bee.
[19:32] <Evie> That's good, Bee, although bruising is still unpleasant.
[19:33] <Alkari> Just don't take deep breaths, and don't laugh!
[19:33] <KK> And did you do that falling off the trike?
[19:33] <KK> If so, don't do that!  It hurts!
[19:33] <derynifanatic64> falling is never fun
[19:33] <the_Bee> I just assumed so because that was when it started hurting.  It felt like severe heartburn.
[19:34] <KK> Probably what did it.
[19:34] <Evie> LOL!  Sounds like the doctor I used to go to before he moved his practice.  "It hurts when you do that?  Then don't do  that!"
[19:34] <the_Bee> I'm pretty sure nothing's broken.
[19:34] <Alkari> That's what my doctor brother says!!
[19:34] <Jerusha> That's good.
[19:34] <KK> Do you also ear a helmet?  YOur noggin is also susceptible to injury if you call off.
[19:34] <KK> wear a helmet
[19:34] <DesertRose> I cracked a couple of ribs falling off my bicycle when I was a teenager.  I remember it hurt like the dickens.
[19:35] <the_Bee> I'm putting a helmet and a sheepskin seat on my Christmas wish-list.
[19:35] <KK> And I think I misspelled suceptible.
[19:35] <DesertRose> I took a handlebar in the rib.
[19:35] <Alkari> I cracked several when I fell off a horse - and got a beaut black eye
[19:35] <Evie> Also when I asked him for a pregnancy test when I went to him for a sinus infection but wanted to be sure meds were safe because I suspected I was expecting.  When I asked for the pregnancyy test, he asked, "Why, have you been exposed?"
[19:35] <DesertRose> No, you got it right the first time, KK.
[19:35] <KK> Fill that list before Christmas, especially the helmet.
[19:35] <the_Bee> scrapes and bruises on my elbows and knees, but not my chest.
[19:36] <Jerusha> Exposed?  :)
[19:36] <DesertRose> Were you actually pregnant at the time, Evie?
[19:36] <KK> To pregnancy. LOL
[19:36] <Evie> DD got a lovely black eye last fall when she walked into the house and fell into a dead faint for no apparent reason just inside the door.
[19:36] <Evie> Yes, with DD.
[19:36] <jemler> to avoid exposure, always wear protective gear! :)
[19:37] <DesertRose> JEMLER!!!
[19:37] <Alkari> A few days later I met a friend on the station, when my eye was at its technicolour best - and she had her arm in a sling.  When we compared notes, her horse had kicked her and she had 3 plates and several screws in her arm.  We got weird looks on the train!!
[19:37] <the_Bee> and sunscreen.
[19:37] * DesertRose smacks jemler with a tuna.
[19:37] <derynifanatic64> real big tuna
[19:37] <jemler> was i thinking too loud again?
[19:37] <Evie> And just a couple of weeks earlier, DS had pointed to my tummy and told me, "Mommy, you have a baby sister in your tummy."  I told him I didn't, but I was wrong. :D
[19:37] <derynifanatic64> YESSS
[19:37] <DesertRose> Yes, yes you were.
[19:37] <DesertRose> LOL, Evie.
[19:37] <KK> Id DS Deryni?
[19:37] <DesertRose> DS is/was psychic?
[19:38] <KK> Is
[19:38] <Evie> He was also adamant for the entire pregnancy that DD would be a girl.
[19:38] <Alkari> A little Healer?
[19:38] <jemler> they know what causes that now! Cangrats Evie!
[19:38] <DesertRose> Evie's DS as Tieg?
[19:38] <Evie> If he's psychic, he's never let on since then.
[19:38] <the_Bee> Well, he had a 50-50 chance of being right.
[19:39] <Evie> But I think he just takes after his dad, who knew I was pregnant with DS about a month before I did.
[19:39] <DesertRose> Actually, from what I know of what Evie's DS looks like, he COULD play Tieg. :D
[19:39] <DesertRose> At least, by The Bastard Prince, when Tieg is an older adolescent.
[19:39] <Alkari> and her DH could play several roles.
[19:39] <Evie> Yeah.  Whenever I  read Dhugal's description, I think of DS too.
[19:40] <the_Bee> red hair and freckles?
[19:40] <jemler> does DS lapse into border dialect once in a while?
[19:40] <Evie> especially the "copper-bronze" hair.  DS has red hair, but it's not orangey-red, it's a darker red that's too red to be considered auburn, but has enough brown in it to keep it from being brassy.
[19:41] <jemler> Ruadh.
[19:41] <Evie> No, jemler, but DH did this afternoon.  I asked him when he'd turned into a Scot. :D
[19:41] <derynifanatic64> monty python had a skit where everyone turned into a Scot
[19:41] <jemler> does DH, in this case, mean Duncan Husband? :)
[19:42] <Alkari> rofl
[19:42] <DesertRose> I thought he was of Scots extraction, or is that your dad?
[19:43] <jemler> my fathers family is from Germany, my mothers from Scotland. with a little bit of cherokee thrown in for good measure!
[19:43] <Evie> https://www.dropbox.com/s/7m5wnctzepgro44/Mom%20%26%20Dad%27s%2050th%20Anniversary%20Party.jpg  You should be able to tell which one is DS from my description. :-)
[19:43] <Jerusha> Without the border braid, I expect.
[19:43] <Evie> LOL!  Um, no jemler, not quite. ;-)
[19:43] <DesertRose> I've been doing a bunch of fooling around on Ancestry.com, and I have found out that I'm scarily English, near as I can tell.
[19:44] <Alkari> why scarily?!
[19:44] <Alkari> Though I suppose it depends what part of England you come from :D
[19:44] <Evie> My husband's of English, German, and maybe some Mediterranean extraction, DR.  My dad is Scots-Irish and a bit of English and maybe a tiny bit of Welsh.
[19:44] <Evie> and also Cherokee
[19:45] <derynifanatic64> my dad is 75% German and 25% Irish, my mom is all Polish
[19:45] <KK> Your DS's hair is a cool color!
[19:45] <DesertRose> I always knew the family was ridiculously WASPy, but what I'm finding on ancestry is unreal.  EVERYFRAKINGBODY is English.
[19:45] <the_Bee> English and German here, with a bit of Welsh and a rumor of Irish.  Son=meone once did a genealogical chart that shows we're descended from Old King Cole.
[19:45] <KK> Handsome DH, too.
[19:45] <Evie> I think so. :-)
[19:45] <DesertRose> DD looks like you, Evie.
[19:46] <DesertRose> Somebody ought to do a good professional shot of you, your mom, and DD.  :)
[19:46] <Evie> DS hates his hair color and curl, but I tell him women spend fortunes getting perms and hair coloring to look like that.  He wishes it was straight and brown.
[19:46] <DesertRose> I'd kick him for that.  I'd kill for his color.
[19:46] <Evie> I think I've got one, DR, but it's several years old.  We need a newer portrait.
[19:46] <Jerusha> I once told a teacher I was English, German Scotch, and Bourbon.  The humor escaped her.
[19:46] <Evie> Aside from that 50th  anniversary photo, our last family portrait was about 5 years ago I think
[19:47] <DesertRose> Y'all look a lot alike.  We've got one of my mom, me, and  my DD from about two years ago.
[19:47] <DesertRose> We look like clones, too.  :)
[19:47] <Evie> LOL, Jerusha
[19:47] <Evie> I call DD my "Mini-me"
[19:47] <DesertRose> LOL, Jerusha.
[19:47] <DesertRose> Yeah, I used to call DD Mini-me online a lot.
[19:47] <jojo> I  actually had a prof that Was Bourbon... Dr. Bourbon!
[19:48] <Evie> I knew a professor whose name was Pepper.  Dr Pepper.  :D
[19:48] <KK> Well, Bourbon is French--a royal house.
[19:48] <jojo> seems like lots of us have a bit of Cherokee...
[19:48] <Jerusha> None of my sons look like me, which might be a good thing.
[19:48] <DesertRose> BRB
[19:48] <jojo> lol Evie!
[19:49] <Alkari> A long as he wasn't of Scottish ancestry, Evie.
[19:49] <Evie> I wasn't expecting a baby redhead.  After he was born, someone jokingly asked me what color the mailman's hair was.  I said, "She's a blonde."  :D
[19:49] <jemler> she is? :)
[19:50] <Evie> Should I prime the mackerel thrower, jemler?
[19:50] <derynifanatic64> Bourbon is also a Spanish royal house
[19:51] <the_Bee> Grandma All was a "Magnificent auburn."
[19:51] <DomMelchior> Oops...my pup is up and reminding me it's his dinner time.  BRB after  I feed the Rorster.
[19:51] <jemler> only if you load it with her picture! :)
[19:51] <derynifanatic64> lucky pup
[19:51] * Evie peeks at the photo of the brigandine and surmises that the embroidered patch and fabric edging either get sewn on the leather before the metal plates are riveted in, or they've got very sharp needles in Cassan.  ;-)
[19:52] <Evie> They have a way of insistently reminding, don't they
[19:52] <Evie> You'd think Luke and Gigi are dying of hunger every morning and evening
[19:53] <Alkari> And Evie, I haven't forgotten about Duncan's coat of arms - just haven't got round to playing with the design
[19:53] <the_Bee> I'm not sure if Melantha wants food or attention.  She'll demand it even when there's food in her bowl.
[19:53] <jojo> KK, much progress this month?
[19:54] <Evie> I've found out there's quilter's fabric that will go through an inkjet printer.  I may use that and load up a sheet with tiny devices to be appliqued to other items.
[19:55] <KK> Evie, I think the embroidery would be done first.  Or it could be glued on after.  They didn't have Sobo glue, but they did have glue.
[19:55] <DomMelchior> Back
[19:55] <KK> And Rory is appreciative, I'm sure.
[19:56] <the_Bee> So how goesthe writing, KK?
[19:56] <KK> Slowly, but moving again. I'vehad to backtrack to lay in the info about Llion marrying Alazais.
[19:57] <DomMelchior> KK, yes...though he continually tries to tell anyone who'll listen that he's never been fed, ever, at any time in his whole life.  He's just been living on air--so he says
[19:57] * the_Bee offers a toast to the happy couple.
[19:57] <KK> He lies!  They all lie!
[19:57] <DesertRose> LOL
[19:57] <Jerusha> Remind me - who is Llion?
[19:57] <derynifanatic64> :D
[19:57] <Alkari> Al;arioc
[19:57] <Alkari> ALaric's squire
[19:57] <KK> Alaric's governor and knight-trainer.
[19:58] <DomMelchior> LOL  yes, when it comes to food, they do
[19:58] <Alkari> The older one who looks after him
[19:58] <Jerusha> I remember now.  Thanks!
[19:59] <KK> He was facing that common problem of young knights without a fortune of their own, of when he can afford a wife and family.
[19:59] <Evie> yes, harder to support a family if you're a landless knight rather than a landed one
[20:00] <Alkari> I love Alaric's devotion to him as a boy
[20:00] <KK> I was going to have him bring her to court, but developments at Morganhall are such that I think he'll put her there for a while.  We know that the distance between Morganhall and Rhemuth CAN be covered in a few hours, on a fast horse.
[20:01] <KK> She's been at Arc-en-Ciel for the past 5-6 years, becoming an accomplished painter.
[20:01] <Jerusha> Could one assume Llion is no longer land-less?
[20:01] <the_Bee> I've sometimes wondered about that--how to translate a day's ride into miles.
[20:01] <Alkari> "Developments at Morganhall" ??   I hope not too bad?   :(
[20:02] <KK> I think I'm going to put him and Alazais in charge of Morganhall, holding it for Bronwyn's dowry.  Meanwhile, that gines them some income.
[20:02] <KK> gives
[20:02] <Alkari> Oh,nice!!
[20:02] <Alkari> So what happens to Alaric's cousins there?  :(
[20:02] <Jerusha> Was it a love match?
[20:02] <Alkari> I hope you aren't going to kill them off!  :(
[20:03] <DomMelchior> Bee, that would depend on many factors in this time period.  The terrain, the weather, road surface, condition of horse, how good a rider, etc.
[20:03] <Alkari> WHo is it - Clara and Clarice?
[20:03] <KK> Kenneth's sisters are getting on in years; one dies about the time I'm at right now.  That leaves 1 aunt, who's not getting any younger.
[20:03] <Alkari> And DomMelchoir, whether you are willing to kill your horse on the trip or not
[20:04] <KK> Claara and Delphine.
[20:04] <Jerusha> Oh dear, more deaths.
[20:04] <the_Bee> I was looking for a range or an average on the ride.
[20:04] <DomMelchior> true, though that greatly diminishes its trade-in value, Alkari.
[20:04] <Alkari> LOL - yes, it does somewhat!
[20:05] <KK> I suppose one can always eat it, if one has ridden it to death.
[20:05] <Jerusha> I think I'll pass.
[20:05] <DomMelchior> But it voids the warranty!
[20:05] <the_Bee> I'm thinking good time on a dirt road, but not wearing out your horse.
[20:05] <KK> Also depends on whether you can change horses alo9ng the way, like Pony Express.
[20:06] <Evie> Eating it voids the warranty? I expect so!
[20:06] <Alkari> Yes.   Though you don't necessarily want to leave your good riding horse behind at some staging post
[20:06] <jemler> probably wouldn't get many offers if you ate the last one!
[20:06] <KK> BTW, I recently found out that the original Pony Express riders were all teenage boys, because they were smaller, wiry, and could take the stress of that kind of riding.
[20:06] <the_Bee> Would a wagon be slower because it's heavier, or faster because you have several horses sharing the work?
[20:06] <Evie> Luke just flopped to the ground as if he'd encountered a sudden surge of gravity too powerful to resist.
[20:06] <jemler> they were alao orphans
[20:06] <Alkari> The former
[20:06] <KK> Wagon would be much slower.
[20:06] <jemler> aqlso orphans
[20:07] <KK> Yes, orphans.
[20:07] <-- derynifanatic64 has left this server (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
[20:07] <the_Bee> orphan wagons?
[20:07] <jemler> pony express riders were orphans
[20:07] <DesertRose> Plus teenage boys have no sense of personal danger and a great sense of adventure, as a group.
[20:08] <Alkari> If they were travelling on horsenback normally, and wanting to conserve their horses, you could probably have them average 6-8 mph as a long-distance gait
[20:08] <jemler> horseback? is that german?
[20:08] <KK> Yep, which made them perfect candidates.
[20:08] <Alkari> They could push on faster and canter a lot more if it was only an hour or two
[20:08] <jemler> horsenback? is that german?
[20:08] <jemler> or a sign for a stable?
[20:08] <jemler> like mother-in-law in trunk
[20:08] <Jerusha> Can I borrow a trout from someone?
[20:09] <jemler> LOL
[20:09] <Evie> LOL
[20:09] * Alkari whacks jemler with frozen mackerel
[20:09] <DesertRose> There's a whole bucket in the corner of the room, Jerusha.  :D
[20:09] * Evie hands Jerusha a trout
[20:09] * jemler ducks
[20:09] <Jerusha> Thanks!  Whack!
[20:09] <DomMelchior> Where are those fish missiles when you really, really need one?
[20:09] * bynw goes to have dinner
[20:09] * Evie smacks jemler with a mackerel so often, she's created a macro for it. *thwack!*
[20:09] <jemler> throw bynw some fish, he's hungry!
[20:10] <Evie> If you threw fish at me, I'd still be hungry.
[20:10] --> derynifanatic64 has joined this channel (Mibbit@F8E647.70AEDE.F99969.D437C6).
[20:10] <DesertRose> Rehi derynifanatic64.
[20:10] <jemler> wb df
[20:10] <Evie> rehi, DF
[20:10] <Jerusha> You don't like fish, Evie?
[20:10] <derynifanatic64> little computer trouble
[20:10] <jojo> bye bynw
[20:10] <Evie> nope.  I don't like pretty much any seafood
[20:10] <jemler> get a bigger computer
[20:10] * DesertRose pelts jemler with a school of goldfish.
[20:10] <Jerusha> Then you don't feel bad about using it for ammunition.  :)
[20:11] <KK> Not even shrimp or lobster--or scallops?
[20:11] <the_Bee> Jerusha: If you have IRC, right click on the person's name, then click "slap!"
[20:11] <Evie> Aside from gelatin (which may or may not be seaweed extracted, depending on source), I can't think of anything aquatic-origin that I like to eat.
[20:11] <jemler> shrimp is good. but, if lobster, don't forget the butter! :)
[20:11] <Jerusha> I could live on shrimp
[20:12] <KK> Scallops.  Yum!
[20:12] * Alkari loves seafood.
[20:12] <DomMelchior> Salmon!
[20:12] <jojo> so does jojo
[20:12] <derynifanatic64> i love salmon
[20:12] <jemler> kfc's cole slaw
[20:12] <DesertRose> I'm with Evie.  If it swims, I don't eat it.
[20:12] <Evie> Yes, I'm the rare (half-)Filipina who hates seafood.  Just like my mom is an islander who can't swim.  :D
[20:12] * the_Bee does too.
[20:12] <derynifanatic64> i have salmon for dinner every friday
[20:12] <Alkari> all sorts of seafood, including oysters
[20:12] <KK> Salmon is good.  But no fish with lots of bonds.  Monk fish is very nice.
[20:12] <the_Bee> just not calamari or octopus.
[20:12] <Alkari> Lovge that too.
[20:13] * Evie pictures a fish with OCD and figures she's watched too much TV
[20:13] <DomMelchior> How about stocks instead?
[20:13] <Alkari> Slat and pepper calamari!  mmmm .....
[20:13] <KK> bones!
[20:13] <DomMelchior> Sorry, I couldn't resist :D
[20:13] <Evie> I tried calamari once, but to me it tasted sort of like deep fried and battered rubber bands
[20:13] <KK> LOL, yes, Evie.  But tasty rubberbands.
[20:14] <DesertRose> That's what gets me about seafood.  The texture of it is icky to me.
[20:14] <jemler> plus it wouldn't let go of the fork! :)
[20:14] <the_Bee> the tast is bland, it's the texture I hate.  Rubbery, as Evie says.
[20:14] <Evie> Mine were sort of flavorless aside from the batter flavor, but that was preferable to tasting like fish, so at least I managed to swallow it.
[20:14] <Alkari> If its rubbery, it has been cooked too long
[20:15] <Evie> When we lived in Italy,my folks loved this restaurant that had a huge seawater aquarium in it, and you could pick your entree from the tank.  Although I had to pick mine from the menu, as they didn't have tanks of fettucine bolognese. :D
[20:15] <KK> Yes, they should be tender, slightly chewy.  Things like scallops and lobster have what I call "tooth," which is like of like what "hand" is to fabric.
[20:16] <KK> kind of like
[20:16] <jemler> al dente
[20:16] <KK> yes!
[20:16] <Alkari> Yes.  Seafood should never be over-cooked
[20:16] <DomMelchior> I make it a point never to eat anything I've been introduced to, Evie.  It just isn't polite!
[20:16] <Evie> My seafood can be left to swim.  I won't mind. ;-)
[20:16] <Jerusha> Yet it can be very easy to do.
[20:16] <the_Bee> scallops, KK: grilled, broiled or blackened?
[20:16] <Alkari> whenin doubt, undercook it
[20:16] <KK> No.  And good sushi is fine!
[20:17] <Evie> DH likes good sushi.  I consider that an oxymoron.  :D
[20:17] <jemler> is there such a thing?
[20:17] <Alkari> Yes KK!
[20:17] <KK> Brioled or pan-fried.  Definitely not breaded.
[20:17] * Alkari is delighted to find another sushi lover
[20:17] <Jerusha> There I draw the line.
[20:17] <the_Bee> I had sushi once.  I nearly gagged on it.
[20:17] <Alkari> Its wonderful.
[20:18] <Alkari> Absolutely fresh raw tuna ..mmmm
[20:18] * Evie eyes Gigi and wonders why she's trying to break into my package of crystallized ginger.  I doubt she'd like it as a kitty treat!
[20:18] <jemler> if i ever try sushi, with my luck, the guy will use puffer fish!
[20:18] <KK> There are sushis without fish, you know.  Ever tried California roll?  Or just the rice rolled in seawood?
[20:18] <DesertRose> LOL, no, I don't think Gigi would like that.
[20:18] <the_Bee> too big to swallow, and only chopsticks to cut it with.
[20:18] <jemler> sea wood?
[20:18] <DesertRose> I like kappamaki (cucumber rolls).
[20:18] <KK> seaweed
[20:18] <Alkari> LOL @ jemler - the guy will have heard your jokes, perhaps?!
[20:19] <KK> You have to bite it in two, Bee.
[20:19] <Evie> LOL
[20:19] <DesertRose> I like a lot of vegetarian sushi, and I will eat California rolls, too, but that's as adventurous as I get, sushi-wise.
[20:19] <jemler> the only raw foos i eat are fruits and vegetables.
[20:19] <the_Bee> and peanut butter
[20:20] <DesertRose> Yum, peanut butter.
[20:20] <KK> I don't like the fish eggs and sea urchin and that sort.
[20:20] <jemler> chocolate
[20:20] <Jerusha> Chocolate is a food group
[20:20] <DesertRose> If every peanut plant on the planet died tomorrow, I'd be in a world of hurt.
[20:20] <jemler> i prefer my eggs scrammbled
[20:21] <the_Bee> chocolate and peanut butter or chocolate and peppermint
[20:21] <KK> Anybody tried dark chocolate covered blueberries?  Yum!
[20:21] <Evie> There used to be some sort of sea weed you could get in the Philippines that looked like tiny grapes.  I ate those as a young child dipped in soy sauce.  But I don't remember them having much flavor, just crunch.
[20:21] <jemler> Zombieland
[20:21] <DesertRose> I've had dark chocolate covered strawberries, but never blueberries.  That does sound yummy, KK.
[20:21] <jojo> and Chocolate Craisins
[20:21] <Evie> yes, I like dark chocolate covered blueberries or cranberries
[20:21] <DomMelchior> Yes, KK, I think you can order that from Harry & David's on line.
[20:22] <the_Bee> chocolate fondue with fruit.
[20:22] <Alkari> Yes @ chocolate berries
[20:22] <DesertRose> There used to be (maybe still is) a chocolate shop in Charleston, SC, that did chocolate covered strawberries with locally grown strawberries.  Om nom nom!!
[20:22] <Evie> and in the kitchen there's a bar of dark chocolate with crystallized ginger in it that's waiting for a special occasion
[20:22] <KK> Scott brought some home that come in a little packet, sort of like cat treats coe in.  Very tasty.
[20:22] <Evie> also high in antioxidants
[20:22] <KK> come in
[20:22] <KK> Yes.
[20:23] <KK> That's a good justification for eating them.  ;-)
[20:23] <Alkari> that's what you can tell yourself as you scoff them down - they are healthy and good for you  :D
[20:23] <Evie> My dad was "prescribed" a moderate amount of dark chocolate as a healthy snack he can have if he's in a snack mood
[20:23] <DomMelchior> Chocolate and cinnamon ice cream--yum  Ralphs just stated selling it and Andy had a coupon to try it.  Very tasty.
[20:23] <jemler> moderate = 2 or 3 pounds?
[20:23] <the_Bee> I snack on peanut butter and raisins.
[20:23] <KK> Sounds yummy.
[20:23] <Evie> that sounds interesting. I'll have to try that
[20:24] <Evie> the ice cream, I mean, but I grew up on peanut butter and raisin sandwiches. My dad prefered those over peanut butter and jelly
[20:24] <Jerusha> Evie, I'll take a referral to your Dad's doctor!
[20:24] <KK> Coupons are excellent justifications for trying something new.  Of course, if you then get hooked....
[20:24] <the_Bee> I was told peanut butter with raisins has about the same protein combo as meat.
[20:24] <Jerusha> I may be the only person in the world that hates peanut butter.
[20:24] <KK> Almonds and walnuts--most nuts, in fact--are also very good for you.
[20:25] <DesertRose> Well, some people are allergic to peanuts, Jerusha.
[20:25] <Evie> My kids' daycare used to serve celery sticks filled with peanut butter topped with raisins.  It was called Ants on a Log
[20:25] <the_Bee> Don't forget many are allergic to peanuts.
[20:25] <KK> My doctor wants me eating an ounce or two of almonds a day.
[20:25] <KK> I've heard of those ants.
[20:25] <Jerusha> I like peanuts, but I can't stand peanut butter.
[20:25] <Evie> My dad's doctor also has him snacking on almonds
[20:25] <DesertRose> Of course, not the ones I like.  I love me some cashews but they are SO high in fat.
[20:25] <DomMelchior> Well my friends, there's a solar eclipse about to start here and I want to go observe (via pinhole projector--must be safe).  Everyone please have a good evening and a terrific week!
[20:25] <DesertRose> Okay, see you later, DomMelchior.
[20:26] <DesertRose> Be well.
[20:26] <Alkari> Bye, DomMelchoir
[20:26] <derynifanatic64> goodnight
[20:26] <KK> Oh, I'm jealous!  YOu get to watch the eclipse.
[20:26] <Evie> Bee, I thought about peanut allergies today because DH and I had a belated Mother's Day lunch at Logan's Steakhouse
[20:26] <the_Bee> Enjoy the view, DomMelchior.
[20:26] <Alkari> KK, when does GoT start tonight?
[20:26] <jojo> Enjoy Dom!
[20:26] <Evie> Bye, Dom
[20:26] <Jerusha> Bye DomMelchoir
[20:26] <KK> 9 PM.
[20:26] <Alkari> Ah, a bit later.   It's addictive  :D
[20:26] <KK> Nighters, Melchior.
[20:26] <-- DomMelchior has left this server (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
[20:27] <Evie> I'm going to have to download GoT from Amazon, aren't I?
[20:27] <Alkari> Oh yes!
[20:27] <Jerusha> It's worth it.
[20:27] <KK> Yep.  There are some really good costumes, especilly the armor.
[20:27] <Alkari> Great fun
[20:27] <Evie> Fortunately Friday is payday
[20:27] <KK> especially
[20:27] <the_Bee> Are they starting seasonal repeats?
[20:27] <Alkari> Love Jaime's gold 'dress' armour.
[20:27] <Evie> I'll watch with Duncan's armor requirements in mind. ;-)
[20:27] <Alkari> From Season 1.
[20:27] <derynifanatic64> payday is always good
[20:27] <KK> Not yet.
[20:28] <jemler> i bought the dvds at walmart.
[20:28] <KK> I need to see Season 1.
[20:28] <Evie> I got some Friendly Plastic, so I might even be able to make some rigid armor parts, like elbow cops and the like.
[20:28] <Alkari> I went out andbought them as soon as they went on sale
[20:28] <Alkari> Yes, you need to see Season 1 KK.
[20:29] <KK> Saw the lst episode, where Sean Bean gets beheaded and the gal takes the dragon eggs into the funeral pyre and the little dragons hatch.
[20:29] <Evie> I'll need to download them, since that way I can watch them on my notebook rather than on the living room TV.  (Since I've heard there are some scenes that are for more "mature audience" viewing than DD's ready for.)
[20:29] <Alkari> The guy who plays Jaime is too old for Alaric in the original DR series, but he's thebest some of us have seen, especially with his bravado and snark
[20:29] <jemler> trust me. he's ready! :)
[20:29] <the_Bee> I do too much tv.  I recently discovered that my Dvr had deleted some episodes while I waasn't looking.  I'm catching up on Hulu and Amazon.
[20:30] <Alkari> Yes, there are some scenes that are NOT kid friendly
[20:30] <Evie> Is it on Hulu?
[20:30] <Evie> I'd prefer Hulu if it is, since I wouldn't have to store it on my hard drive
[20:30] <the_Bee> Got?  I haven't looked for that one.  It might be on Hulu plus.
[20:31] <Jerusha> How old is DD, Evie?
[20:31] <Evie> 14
[20:31] <Jerusha> Discretion would be advised.
[20:32] <the_Bee> I lije PG-13 movies.
[20:32] <Alkari> Definitely
[20:32] <the_Bee> like too
[20:33] <Alkari> The series does not hold back on violence or sex
[20:33] <KK> There's some nudity and sex that couldn't show on network TV, but I expect that your DD is pretty mature.  I found it more shocking when Geoffrey ordered one prostitute th beat another one to death with his spikey sceptre.
[20:33] <Alkari> Yes, that was scary.  And isn't the kid who plays him great!
[20:33] <KK> Fortunately, they cut to another scene before it got too intense.
[20:33] <the_Bee> Yes.  Violence is worse than sex.
[20:33] <Evie> Some off-camera references are OK--DD's old enough to watch Firefly and Serenity and loves both--but she's not ready for anything that would get an R rating at the cinema.
[20:34] <bynw> wish that show lasted longer
[20:34] <Alkari> Yet the community seems to get more upset by showing sex than showing violenvce
[20:34] <Evie> DD can't handle too much violence either.  She gets nightmares.
[20:34] <bynw> violence we are well used too ... even kids. just watch your everyday cartoons
[20:35] <KK> This might give her nightmares.  Maybe give her another couple of years.
[20:35] <Evie> very sensitive to that sort of thing, much more so than DS was at her age
[20:35] <Alkari> Yes.  But its a double standard
[20:35] <KK> Yes, it is.  But it's what is.
[20:35] <Alkari> Think of all the routine violence on TV shows vs the howls of outrage at the Janet Jackson wardrobe malfunction
[20:36] <the_Bee> What would the world be like if sex were regarded as just another natural activity?
[20:36] <Alkari> It's just sort of - weird
[20:36] <Alkari> I know Bee - it would be terrible.  :D
[20:36] <Evie> As one friend joked, though, he can handle gratuitous violence in TV and movies since he knows the violence is fake.  However, with gratuitous sex scenes, the nudity isn't fake, and it's a bit harder for him to ignore. :D
[20:36] <KK> Too true.  As if a nipple slip is going to corrupt viewers more than some of the other stuff they show.
[20:37] <Evie> brb kitty avalanche
[20:38] <bynw> kitty avalanche?
[20:38] <the_Bee> IMHO the appropriate response to The Janet Jackson incident would have been "OOOPS!" follwed by an embarrassed grin or blush.
[20:38] <derynifanatic64> uh oh
[20:38] <KK> There's lots of nudity in GoT, though; lots of breasts, I believe one of male frontal nudity, though it's brief.
[20:38] <Evie> back.  Yes, Gigi hasn't fully lived if she hasn't knocked something off a countertop or tabletop at least once a day.
[20:39] <KK> So this was her once?
[20:39] <Evie> at least once
[20:39] <KK> Or at least once?
[20:39] <Evie> she plays that two-year-old game of looking at  you as she knocks something on the floor to see if you plan to pick it back up
[20:39] <jemler> sex a natural activity? ourtagerous! :)
[20:40] <derynifanatic64> which you do
[20:40] <Evie> having cats is a lot like having furry toddlers
[20:40] <Alkari> Yes KK, and of course, there's the incest
[20:40] <KK> Yes!
[20:40] <Alkari> And the boy out the window.
[20:40] <the_Bee> Melantha knocks my tv remote off the shelf.
[20:40] <jemler> which bothers you more, Cersei and Jaime, or Viserys and Daenarys?
[20:41] <jemler> Khal Drogo kept his word though.
[20:41] <KK> I did incest in Camber of Culdi, so that didn't shock me.  And I think I missed throwing a boy out the window.  Is that the young prince who's crippled, or was another boy thrown out the window?
[20:41] <jemler> that's Barndon.
[20:41] <Evie> Not out a window, just into a well, IIRC.
[20:41] <Jerusha> Ah - I thought it was an avalanche of kitties!
[20:41] <jemler> brandon, sorry
[20:41] <KK> I've done down a well, too.
[20:41] <DesertRose> Poor Krispin.
[20:42] <KK> Is Brandon the rippled prince?
[20:42] <derynifanatic64> he was avenged
[20:42] <jemler> yes
[20:42] <KK> crippled
[20:42] <KK> Is that how he was crippled?
[20:42] <jemler> Yes. Jaime threw him out.
[20:42] <Alkari> Yes.
[20:42] <jemler> Arya is a feisty little thing.
[20:43] <Alkari> When the kid say Jaime and Cersei together
[20:43] <Jerusha> But Brion had to attone for it.
[20:43] <Jerusha> Oops - not Brion, his father.
[20:43] <Alkari> * saw
[20:43] <jemler> Eddard
[20:43] <KK> I've got to watch Season 1.
[20:44] <Alkari> Eddard has a bit of a double standard where Jaime is concerned - Ned would have killed King Aerys had not Jaime done the job for him.
[20:44] <Alkari> But Ned will never admit it.
[20:44] <jemler> i don't have HBO, so i'll buy the dvds
[20:44] <Alkari> Yes, you MUST get season 1, KK - Peter Dinklage won an Emmy for his role as Tyrion
[20:44] <KK> He is VERY good.
[20:45] <Alkari> Isn't he.
[20:45] * bynw has HBO and almost every other cable channel
[20:45] <Jerusha> Yes
[20:45] <jojo> yes
[20:45] <jemler> how did you like him recounting his sins in the Aerie?
[20:45] <Alkari> And in Season 2, doesn't Charles Dance just ówn'the screen as Tywin!
[20:45] * Evie has...um...a TV set and a DVD player that sometimes works right
[20:45] <jemler> spoiler alert!
[20:45] <Alkari> That was grteat, jemler - much fun!
[20:46] <DesertRose> I guess I'm going to have to look for this show on Netflix.  :d
[20:46] <Jerusha> I'll have to wait for the DVD for season 2.
[20:46] <DesertRose> :D
[20:46] <KK> I'm still sorting out all the characters.
[20:46] <Alkari> And the slapping Joffrey scene that went viral!!

[20:46] <KK> I think I saw that scene--and it was great!
[20:47] <Alkari> It was  :D
[20:47] <the_Bee> no trout?
[20:47] <Alkari> No.
[20:47] <Alkari> An open hand was much more effective  :D
[20:48] <Evie> I guess it's a good thing I'm allegedly taking a writing break, then, if you're going to hook me on a new series.
[20:48] <DesertRose> Yeah, Netflix has it on DVDs.  I'll have to see about getting those DVDs once I'm done with Season 2 of Downton Abbey.  :D
[20:48] <Jerusha> "Allegedly", Evie?
[20:48] <Alkari> Yes.  She's playing with her toys

[20:48] <Jerusha> And girls.
[20:49] <Evie> Yeah...well...I keep opening Scrivener and futzing with the chapters of Duncan Michael's story that are already written.  Though I'm not writing anything new yet.
[20:49] <derynifanatic64> Maggie Smith won an emmy for her role on "downton abbey"
[20:49] <DesertRose> She deserved it.  :)
[20:49] <Alkari> I just saw her in The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
[20:49] <Alkari> She is wonderful
[20:49] <DesertRose> She's wonderful in everything, it seems.  :)
[20:49] <jojo> how was it?
[20:49] <KK> How is that?
[20:49] <Evie> yes
[20:49] <DesertRose> I want to see Ladies in Lavender, with her and Judi Dench.
[20:49] <Alkari> Marigold Hotel?
[20:50] <KK> Yes
[20:50] <Alkari> It is a little formulaic, but the acting it truly superb - it has Judi Dench and Bill Nighy in it, also Celia Imrie
[20:50] <Alkari> * is superb
[20:50] <KK> That's on my list.  We saw Dark Shadows last week.  Uneven.
[20:50] <derynifanatic64> in season 3 of "downton abbey", she will tangle with Shirley MacLaine
[20:51] <Alkari> ONe of those gems where you really appreciate a top British cast
[20:51] <KK> That's what I hear.
[20:51] <KK> Good series.  His Titanic was not.
[20:51] <Jerusha> But Johnny Depp was a good Barnabas.  I was prepared to not like it, but I did enjoy it
[20:51] <DesertRose> Yes, we went and saw Dark Shadows for Mother's Day.  I thought it should have made up its mind whether it wanted to be a serious remake or a parody.
[20:51] <jemler> i saw an ad where you get get the original series on dvd, only $600!
[20:51] <Alkari> I must go and see The Avengers
[20:51] <Evie> I really enjoyed Avengers
[20:52] <KK> I need to go now, so I can watch GoT.
[20:52] <Evie> but then again I enjoy nearly anything with a screenplay by Joss Whedon
[20:52] <Alkari> Though with that name, I keep thinking of the original UK TV series
[20:52] <the_Bee> Some fans of the original series have come down hard on the Dark Shadows movie.
[20:52] <Alkari> Oh yes KK - you mustn't miss it  :D
[20:52] <Evie> Enjoy, KK

"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
