Glad he's feeling better.  Though something his size having an attack of the 'evening crazies' must sound like the charge of the Light Brigade!  :)

Thanks.  He's just a DSH grey tabby--about the most common type of cat--but he is kind of special.  And not just to me.  Even people who don't like cats much like him.  My handyman is allergic, but he's crazy about Zane.  And Zane likes people, although he prefers men to women.  He HATES other cats, and HATES dogs.

He spent most of this PM being a lap fungus.  No 'evening crazies' tonight.   One of his eccentricities has always been that he doesn't like to jump up onto people's laps--he'll sit next to the chair and meow until you pick him up.  And it isn't an age thing--he is quite capable of jumping that high still, and will do so when the chair is unoccupied.

Thanks for everyone's well wishes.

My parents' cat, PJ (she's in the gallery twice, once as a little bitty kitten and once as an adult), likes men better than women too.  I wonder why that is?

Yes; especially when he hits the hardwood floor!

On the other hand, my aunt's cat (who looks rather like Zane, only smaller; of course, one isn't likely to see a bigger feline who isn't in a cage at the zoo!) doesn't like men much.

Yeah, my family had a dog (lo these many years ago when I was a baby) who disliked men very much, but adored my mother.  (Sunshine gave me rather a wide berth because I was quite rambunctious and noisy as a young child.)

On the other hand, one of the cats I had in my uni years never met a stranger.  He loved everybody he ever met of the human or feline persuasions.  He disliked dogs, though, which made taking him to the vet sometimes rather an adventure if there were dogs in the waiting room with us.

Zane doesn't HATE women; he just likes men better.  When my friend Adam came over for dinner with his wife & sister-in-law, Zane was certainly polite to the ladies--sniffed them and allowed them to stroke him--but he was all over Adam.

PJ's like that.  She likes women okay, but she LOVES men.  My stepfather is her favorite person/toy in all the world, and any male guests will not leave the house without gray/blue fur on them.  :)

Zane is sleeping a lot, even for a cat.

He'll go off into his new favorite niche and barely come out for meals.  I keep thinking, "Ok, this is it.  I need to take him on the Last Trip to the Vet."--then he'll emerge and act like his old self for a bit.  He'll just eat a few token bites for a couple of days----then will start making like a furry vaccuum cleaner.

It may just be the aging process.  Cats, like all of us, slow down a bit as we age, and we have good days and bad days.  Maybe some days he just can't be arsed to do much, and some days he feels better.

Please don't consider me the oracle on cats, but I wouldn't get too panicky from what you're describing.

This AM when I got up to feed him at 4:00 am, he didn't come.  I was sure he was either sick or had passed in the night.  He wasn't yowling or complaining, so if he was sick he wasn't in pain, so I decided that I would deal with it later in the AM when I could get him to the vet.  So I set out his food, then went back to bed.

I was awakened by this big, furry weight descending onto my belly, and then a loud rumbling as the furry weight curled up next to me and demanded petting.  I didn't check the time, just rolled over and petted him until I went back to sleep.

Later I woke up and heard much-munch-munch. Rolled over again.  Woke up with the alarm clock.  He's still OK.

Nevertheless, I worry about him all the time.  He's about 14--that's old for a cat, particularly big fattie like him.

Took Zane to the Vet yesterday for a checkup & shots.  He was so GOOD for the vet.  Not like last year when the assistant had to wear elbow-length leather gloves.  The vet found nothing wrong with him--temperature normal, heart OK, lungs OK.  But being so docile while being manhandled like that is NOT normal for Zane.  Poor thing--he's getting old.

I'm glad he's in good health, even though he's slowing down a bit.  Sounds like me!  :D
