Right the way through to the early middle ages, prince was a higher rank than king. It's the reason that the welsh had a prince: the ruler of Gwynedd (not that one) was pronouncing himself to be superior to the other petty kings of Wales by claiming imperial status. (Edward I was not amused at the presumption).
