KK Chat - Mar. 3, 2002, pt. 2

[18:17] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I've an interesting(?) problem...a domain name and no clue how to get started building the site to go on it! :sigh:
[18:17] <Martine> I am too, Leslie!
[18:17] <Majorsprop> who here isn't?
[18:17] <Shiral> Join the club, Leslie
[18:17] <Sedina> You're in the right spot for that though, leslie
[18:17] <leslie> Is it snowing in Ireland?
[18:18] <Shiral> And we've had a big hit just this past month, too!
[18:18] <Jessie> Leslie:  made your snow angel for you
[18:18] <KK> Nope, hasn't snowed since early November.
[18:18] <leslie> thanks
[18:18] <scribbler> Kelos -- join the club; I want to redesign a site but am having trouble doing it....
[18:18] <Shiral> Jessie, did you get more snow?
[18:18] <Martine> My site needs designing - I just need the time! <g>
[18:18] <KK> It's rained a lot, though.  And today's paper said we may have an exceptionally wet summer in these parts.
[18:18] <Majorsprop> We got over 1 foot this week alone and it is almost all gone
[18:18] <Shiral> Martine, who needs sleep? <G>
[18:18] <virtualbabe> I'm afraid I can't help you Kelos.  I'm a total web-page virgin yet
[18:18] <Jessie> Shiral:  :-) YES
[18:18] <Shiral> Whee!!!
[18:18] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Scribs...my site has zero pages that I've actually designed on it... and it's very sad.
[18:18] <Martine> Sleep is definitely overrated! <g>
[18:18] <leslie> My grandmother found distant kin to Ireland, Greer and Kinshalow
[18:19] <Jessie> about 6 inches of snow on the ground
[18:19] <scribbler> Well, if you wouldn't get involved in 29,999 projects, Martine....
[18:19] <Martine> Caffeine is the cure to sleep!
[18:19] * Shiral throws Jessie a virtual snowball
[18:19] <Martine> LOL, Scribbler!
[18:19] <Martine> But it's so much fun!
[18:19] <Martine> And it keeps me out of trouble <g>
[18:19] * Jessie throws one back at Shiral (tho it melts in the California heat)
[18:19] <Martine> I'm a confessed workaholic :-)
[18:19] <Shiral> Not really, Martine!
[18:19] <scribbler> that'll be a first, Martine....
[18:19] <Martine> Hey!
[18:19] <Shiral> You still get in plenty of trouble as it is!-- "Mairona!"
[18:19] <Martine> Okay, keeps me out of large trouble!
[18:19] <Martine> Mairona rocks! <g>
[18:19] * Jessie pats Martine on the head -- it's okay dear
[18:19] * virtualbabe looks around for some snow to throw back, but doesn't see any
[18:20] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Actually, I suppose that I need to get some flyers printed up to get some income coming in. It isn't coming on by my handing out business cards. :(
[18:20] <Shiral> Ew, what's this slush all over me??
[18:20] * Martine gets rain from out her window and throws that instead
[18:20] * leslie grabs the snowballs and stuffs them in the freezer
[18:20] <Shiral> KK, any plans to get Nigel born before Jasta bursts?
[18:20] <Jessie> sorry Shiral -- it mmmmmmmeeeeeeeeeeeeellllllllllllllltttttttttteeeeeeeddddddddd
[18:20] <Shiral> =o)
[18:20] <Jessie> lol Shiral
[18:20] <scribbler> stop having so much fun -- Mark won't leave!
[18:21] <KK> It's possible he'll get born this week.
[18:21] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Anyone know where I can get the coin preservation sleeves?
[18:21] <Martine> yay! Nigelage!
[18:21] <leslie> talk about planned parenthood
[18:21] <Shiral>  Actually, snow balls, like honey pots, are a good thing to keep away from small children in libraries
[18:21] <Martine> LOL!
[18:21] <Jessie> boy -- Jasta will be thrilled
[18:21] *** Bynw|Tika is now known as Bynw
[18:21] <Shiral> Nigel Natus est! (possibly ) <G>
[18:21] <Martine> She'll be more thrilled when Nigel grows up! <g>
[18:21] <jm> Books a Million possibly
[18:21] * the_Bee casts a spell that turns all the snow-and slushballs to rainbows
[18:21] <scribbler> Awww...Teeks gone bye-bye?
[18:21] <Shiral> LOL, Martine
[18:21] *** Rambart20 has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[18:22] <Jessie> hello Bar
[18:22] <Shiral> Hi Bart
[18:22] <Bynw> hiyas Bart!
[18:22] <virtualbabe> Hi Bart
[18:22] <Martine> Hi Bart
[18:22] <jm> hi bart
[18:22] * scribbler sends greetings to Bart
[18:22] <Rambart20> Howdy all!
[18:22] <KK> 'Lo, Bart!
[18:22] <Majorsprop> hi BArt
[18:22] <Jessie> Bart:  got your computer fixed?
[18:22] <leslie> hiya Bart
[18:22] <Sedina> Hi Bart
[18:22] <the_Bee> howdy bart
[18:22] <Rambart20> no unfortunately
[18:22] <Shiral> Oh, KK, had a pretty funny incident with the last chapter I scanned
[18:22] <Jessie> bummer Bart
[18:22] <Rambart20> borrwing my cousins
[18:22] <Jessie> huggles Bart
[18:22] <Bynw> Bart, you making a road trip this coming weekend?
[18:22] <Martine> Funnier than Sean Lord Denny? <G>
[18:22] <KK> Yes, Shiral?
[18:23] <Kelos_al-Hazar> What, Shiral?
[18:23] <virtualbabe> what happened shiral?
[18:23] <Shiral> Duncan is busily talking to Brother Jerome, and all of a sudden, although it's clear that its a reference to Alaric, it came out "Maria"
[18:23] <Rambart20> hopefully it will be up and running by tomorrow
[18:23] <Kelos_al-Hazar> ROFL!
[18:23] <Rambart20> I am planning on it
[18:23] <KK> Maria?!
[18:23] <Shiral> The Camberian Council has no idea how to solve a problem like Maria!!
[18:23] <Martine> "Maria.... I just met a girl named Maria...." <g>
[18:23] <Shiral> Yes, I have NO idea where it came from,
[18:23] <Rambart20> leaving friday afternoon
[18:23] * virtualbabe hums "how do you solve a problem like Maria?"
[18:23] <scribbler> Martine -- doesn't he have a restaurant chain in Gwynedd?
[18:23] <Martine> Yup!
[18:23] <Shiral> Or in Richenda's case  "Alaric, I just met a mage named Alaric...."
[18:23] <Shiral> <G>
[18:24] <Martine> In fact, they have a franchise in Nordemark's, the department store Shiral and I own <g>
[18:24] <Shiral> I won't worry until Alaric dances an Landler with Captain Von Trapp, though.
[18:24] <Martine> ROTFL!!!!
[18:24] * Kelos_al-Hazar wonders how the OCR will munge Cirala...
[18:24] <KK> That could be interesting.
[18:24] <Majorsprop> I've got to go. We going to Lonestar Steakhouse
[18:24] <Majorsprop> Bye
[18:24] <Martine> Bye, Major!
[18:24] <virtualbabe> I don't think Chris Plummer's alaric's type
[18:24] <Jessie> bye & huggles Majorsprop
[18:24] <Shiral> It's never happened again, and I'm now on chapter nine, but it made me really crack up
[18:24] <scribbler> have a good dinner....
[18:24] <Martine> You're making me hungry! <g>
[18:24] <KK> Have a good steak, Major.
[18:24] <jm> bye major
[18:24] <Shiral> Bye, Majorspop!
[18:24] *** Majorsprop has left #Deryni_Destinations
[18:25] <virtualbabe> airam?
[18:25] <leslie> bye major
[18:25] <Shiral> VB, I don't think Alaric and Captain VonTrapp were made for each other either <EG>
[18:25] <leslie> Katherine, I gotta castle question for ya
[18:25] <KK> ok.
[18:25] * Jessie listens and nudges Martine to listen
[18:25] * Martine listens stealthily <g>
[18:25] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Brrrrr...it's 34°F out here...and that's UP three degrees from earlier today!
[18:26] * Jessie watches Martine grab her shoehorn
[18:26] <leslie> What is it like in a castle in a really bad lightning storm w/ tornados?
[18:26] <Martine> LOL!
[18:26] <Martine> But it's broken, jessie! <g>
[18:26] <Martine> But that reminds me, I do have a new castle question for Katherine!
[18:26] <virtualbabe> Come to Vancouver, It's over 10 here, (celcius)
[18:26] <KK> Dark and cold, I should imagine.  And scary, wondering if the chimneys are going to come crashing down--and if they do, if they'll go all the way through to ground level.
[18:27] <leslie> Would the pressure back up the middens?
[18:27] * Shiral doesn't want to experience a tornado in a castle at this point
[18:27] <leslie> me too
[18:27] <scribbler> or any point here....
[18:27] <KK> Not very far.  There tends to be a space that's an actual drop. It isn't a sealed system--which you'd need, for the yuck to be sucked back up.
[18:28] <Shiral> Better a castle than a trailer park though, I suppose
[18:28] <Martine> Katherine - Can the withdrawing room go in the tower behind the hall, over the kitchen? It's much easier to get light in there
[18:28] <KK> Definitely.
[18:28] <leslie> Thanks :}
[18:28] * virtualbabe has never seen a tornado, except on TV. and that is close enough thankyouverymuch
[18:28] <KK> I don't picture any windows in that withdrawing room, Martine.
[18:28] <scribbler> LOL Shiral....
[18:28] <Martine> Oh - okay. That makes it MUCH easier. Thanks!
[18:28] <KK> The stair down into the kitchen may be in the thickness of that wall.
[18:29] <Shiral> A castle is somewhat sturdier, I'd imagine, Scribbler!
[18:29] <leslie> I once woke up Sunday afternoon due to the tornado alarm
[18:29] <Martine> The stair's already there. :-) Thanks!
[18:29] * Jessie watches Martine's headache count drop by 1
[18:29] <KK> Martine, you're a woman after my own heart!
[18:29] <Martine> LOL!
[18:29] <jm> Was in Salt Lake City a few years back when one hit-interesting
[18:29] * Kelos_al-Hazar had one pass over his house...and another pass beside his house (different year)
[18:29] <Martine> Now I just have to figure out where to shoehorn the garderobes <g>
[18:29] <Harvey> I'm back and caught up
[18:29] <Harvey> Hi.
[18:30] <Martine> And buy a new shoehorn.
[18:30] <Shiral> WB Harvey
[18:30] <KK> They're also in the thickness of the walls.
[18:30] <Jessie> Martine:  I keep telling you -- portal garderobes
[18:30] <scribbler> Ah....thought you were just being quiet....
[18:30] <Shiral> Portal Potties
[18:30] <KK> LOL
[18:30] <Harvey> No.  I'm packing for a wonderful month exiled to Cleveland.
[18:30] <Martine> I might throw one in an early copy as a goof! <g>
[18:30] <leslie> "The more they overthink the plumbing the easier it is to stop up the drain"
[18:30] <Harvey> I have to go to the airport soon.
[18:30] <Shiral> Very embarassing if someone should "drop by" at just the wrong moment, though
[18:30] <scribbler> Have a safe trip, Harvey....
[18:30] <KK> What're you doing in Cleveland, Harvey?
[18:30] <Jessie> huggles Harvey & have a safe trip
[18:30] <Harvey> In response to the previous bit.  I'm 32.  I grew up in a small town called Cross Lanes, West Virginia.
[18:31] <Martine> Safe flying, harvey!
[18:31] * Kelos_al-Hazar thinks that all the refuse needs to be gated to Teymuraz's place... ;P
[18:31] <Shiral> Safe trip, harvey
[18:31] <Harvey> If you think your town is small, at least it's big enough to have a library...
[18:31] <leslie> be careful
[18:31] <Harvey> Thanks.
[18:31] <virtualbabe> have fun harvey.  (if that is possible in Cleveland)
[18:31] <Sedina> Bye Harvey.  Have a safe trip to Cleveland.  Hopefully you can sneak in on occasion while you're away.
[18:31] <Harvey> I don't know the web access situation.
[18:31] <Harvey> But I will try.
[18:31] <the_Bee> I've wondered why nobody noticed the garderobe portal didn't function too well as a garderobe
[18:31] <leslie> there's a joke in there.....
[18:31] <Jessie> it probably did bee
[18:32] <Ghostgames> Most major cities have internet cafes these days. :-)
[18:32] <KK> No reason there can't also be a part of it that is a functioning garderobe.
[18:32] <virtualbabe> the one with the veil?  I believe it did function properly
[18:32] <leslie> bet you'd have to have your cordinates correct..... :}
[18:32] <Martine> LOL!
[18:32] <the_Bee> So how come it stank after the guard used it?  Javan noticed the stench
[18:32] <Martine> Can you imagine portaling in - and winding up in the middens? <g>
[18:32] <scribbler> I was thinking the one in Valoret that Javan/Tavis used....
[18:32] <Shiral> Ew, Martine
[18:32] * Shiral pulls on her fisherman's wading boots
[18:32] <Martine> LOL!
[18:33] <leslie> That's a crappy portal. No--I mean a really crappy portal!!
[18:33] <the_Bee> me too scribbler
[18:33] <Shiral> The kind that go up to the ARMpits
[18:33] <KK> Well, you don't portal onto the open seat, after all....
[18:33] <Martine> ROTFL!!!!
[18:33] <Ghostgames> I assume it functioned as a normal garderobe, rather than using the portal capabilities to dispose of the waste.
[18:33] <Shiral> True,
[18:33] <Shiral> But I'll stick to Duncan's nice, clean study portal, thanks <G>
[18:33] <KK> Yes, Ghost.
[18:33] <virtualbabe> Stuff smells..I doubt if any used garderobe is odorless
[18:33] <KK> Never.
[18:33] <Martine> But it would be fun portaling the waste to Loris' room! <g>
[18:33] <KK> Picture the Porta-Potties all of us have used....
[18:34] <Martine> Or camp latrines.
[18:34] <scribbler> and that they are NEVER serviced......
[18:34] <leslie> Hence the first request that a man leave DOWN the lid
[18:34] * Shiral wishes she could think of something to redirect the topic, a little....
[18:34] <Martine> Oh, they were serviced alright.
[18:34] <Rambart20> no porta potties compare to the army ones
[18:34] <KK> LOL, Leslie!
[18:34] <jm> What's a lid
[18:34] <Jessie> lol Jerry
[18:34] <Martine> Poor guys called "muckrakers" had to climb in and clean out the middens, if they didn't drain into a river or something similar.
[18:34] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Um, yes, let us DO change the subject? :)
[18:35] <Martine> Talk about a dirty job!
[18:35] <Ghostgames> While Paul and I were in Oxford (and London) we took the opportunity to explore some of the really old buildings. Including the garderobes in the White Tower at the Tower of London. That, and the /very/ winding /very/ narrow stone spiral stairs up the tower to the walk-around parapet on St. Mary's Church in Oxford were quite enlightening as to what medieval architecture /really/ looks and feels like.
[18:35] <leslie> Wonder who went in to get them if they got stuck?
[18:35] <Jessie> Martine:  and now they (the muckrakers) just visit Washington DC
[18:35] <virtualbabe> and now muckrakers is a euphanism for journalists
[18:35] <Shiral> KK, would anyone have ever build a portal in say, a stall in a stable??
[18:35] <Martine> LOL, Jessie!
[18:35] <KK> They did have lids.  And they had earth closets, and close stools, and ceramic potties that were kept in cupboards and false-bottomed chairs....
[18:35] <leslie> MacCauley's book "Castle" might be of help
[18:35] <the_Bee> stuck? in the stairway?
[18:35] <Martine> Visiting the real thing is an enlightening experience, isn't it Ann?
[18:35] <Martine> Especially how dark everything is.
[18:36] <Shiral> medieval times were not for sissies
[18:36] <Martine> And the spaces in castles seem so much smaller than you imagine
[18:36] <Harvey> I want to build a portal on the ceiling.
[18:36] <Martine> LOL! Just drop in anytime!
[18:36] <Harvey> Yes.
[18:36] <Rambart20> on the ceiling?
[18:36] <virtualbabe> that's nasty harvey
[18:36] <Shiral> The gravity might be problematical, harvey <G>
[18:36] <scribbler> I've heard of dancing on the ceiling, but portalling?
[18:36] <jm> Don't you need solid earth to build one
[18:36] <Jessie> Katherine:  does the portal in the tunnel between Tor Caerrorie and the village church -- still exist
[18:36] <KK> Shiral, they might.  But you'd want to be sure no horse was in there while using it.
[18:36] <Harvey> Gravity.  It's not just a good idea.  It's the law.
[18:36] * Kelos_al-Hazar liked his idea of a Portal that was a false doorway, himself!
[18:36] <Shiral> True
[18:36] <KK> Exist, or function?
[18:36] <Jessie> both
[18:37] <Shiral> It just seemed like another possibility for private and unlikely portals to be
[18:37] <KK> Dunno offhand.  I'd have to check that.
[18:37] <leslie> I'd like to see a paper on the various hidden walls, tunnels etc, in Gwynedd through history
[18:37] <Shiral> Me too <G>
[18:37] <Jessie> also:  does the Castle in Valoret still exist?
[18:38] *** duck has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[18:38] <KK> Definitely.
[18:38] <Jessie> huggles Duck
[18:38] <Martine> Leslie - you'll get to see the hidden passages in Rhemuth Castle when the Atlas comes out.
[18:38] <Bynw> Hiyas Duck
[18:38] * scribbler sends greetings to duck
[18:38] <KK> Hi, Duck!
[18:38] <the_Bee> hi duck
[18:38] <Martine> Huggles, Duck!
[18:38] <Shiral> I imagine Alaric had a LOT of fun learning about all the secret passages in Rhemuth castle when he was a young lad <G>
[18:38] <Shiral> Hi Duck, Huggles
[18:38] <jm> hi duck
[18:38] <duck> g'day people
[18:38] <Rambart20> howdy duck!
[18:38] <leslie> A portal wouldn't qualify as a tunnel?
[18:38] <Sedina> Hi duck
[18:38] <Kelos_al-Hazar> What WOULD happen if a portal was created in a tunnel that later collapsed...would the Portal still be operational?
[18:38] <Martine> It would be a cute short story about Alaric getting stuck in the passages as a boy
[18:38] <KK> Nope.
[18:38] <virtualbabe> Hi Duck.  maybe we will find out in book two
[18:38] <leslie> hi duck
[18:38] * Shiral can picture Alaric having a good time playing mindgames with people while safely concealed in secret passages...
[18:39] <Harvey> Hi duck.  I'm taking off for the airport.  Bye all.
[18:39] <Shiral> Bye Harvey
[18:39] <the_Bee> bye Harvey
[18:39] <virtualbabe> bye-eee harvey
[18:39] <leslie> bye harvey
[18:39] <Martine> "There go those ghosts in the walls again... Man, they give me the shivers"! <g>
[18:39] <jm> bye harvey
[18:39] <Jessie> bye & huggles Harvey
[18:39] <KK> I think there must be a way to tell if there's no space at the other end of a planned Portal jump.
[18:39] <KK> Bye, Harvey.
[18:39] <Martine> Bye, Harvey!
[18:39] <scribbler> And then you could write a story about Kelric getting stuck in the tunnels like his dad, Shiral....
[18:39] <Sedina> Bye, Harvey
[18:39] <virtualbabe> sort of a return echo or busy signal
[18:39] <Shiral> Somehow, I think Scribbler wants to know more about Kelric Alain Morgan....
[18:39] <Martine> Even more interesting would be if Kelric accidently discovered secret passages - and even a portal - in Coroth
[18:39] *** Harvey has quit IRC (QUIT: Leaving)
[18:40] <Kelos_al-Hazar> It'd be a rather...crushing experience if you didn't have it.
[18:40] <KK> Good analogy, Babe.
[18:40] <Shiral> "Daddy, the FLOOR is tingling!!"
[18:40] <Martine> "It feels funny!"
[18:40] <leslie> My feet are happy!
[18:40] <Martine> "Daddy, come see! Come see!" <pop> Hey, where'e Kelric go?
[18:40] <scribbler> of course, since you have to know the coordinates of another Portal, it wouldn't do him any good anyway, right?
[18:41] <Shiral> True
[18:41] <duck> unless he finds two in coroth castle
[18:41] <KK> This is true.  Portals are not for children.
[18:41] <virtualbabe> and normally a deryni has to be taught how to use a portal
[18:41] <Shiral> And I think there's something more to using a portal than just knowing it's there
[18:41] <KK> Yes.
[18:41] <leslie> We are professionals. Do not try this at home
[18:41] <the_Bee> the kid might vanish into nowhere. :(
[18:41] <jm> And there isn't a portal in Coroth is there?
[18:41] <Shiral> GMTA, Babe
[18:41] <Martine> No, but I could see children getting in serious mischief - or trouble - by playing with portals
[18:41] <Jessie> does a deryni HAVE to have a portal to portal to -- or can they portal to a site that they know well?
[18:42] <scribbler> I could imagine a Deryni parent sending their kid to their room as punishment, and the kid just portalling out....
[18:42] <Martine> ROTFL!!
[18:42] <KK> We've not yet fully determined that, Jessie.
[18:42] <Martine> THe Deryni version of climbing out the window!
[18:42] <leslie> The ball rolled in the corner and didn't come back. The little girl didn't come back either
[18:42] <Shiral> And of course, I suspect that Kelric is perfectly capable of climbing out a window in the first place <G>
[18:42] <the_Bee> we think there should have been, since the Dukes were Deryni for so long
[18:42] <Jessie> I have an idea that discipline then was a bit more than getting sent to one's room
[18:42] <Martine> Especially where honey's involved, Shiral!
[18:42] <scribbler> I'm waiting for the details of how the original CC was able to portal to a site they only read about....
[18:42] <Shiral> I think so too, Bee
[18:43] <KK> Portaling would be beyond a kid's ability.  This would probably kick in at puberty, when the other more subtle abilities start to surface.
[18:43] <Shiral> I suspect there would be a portal around Coroth SOMEWHERE, even if nobody remembered where it was
[18:43] <Martine> Would a young child be able to mind-speak with or without assistance, Katherine?
[18:43] <leslie> Didn't Marion Bradley have a 'trap matrix' similiar?
[18:43] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I believe the CC chamber's portal's pattern was detailed somewhere in a document?
[18:43] <scribbler> Well, they hadn't discovered it by Kelson's wedding....
[18:43] <KK> Probably, Martine.
[18:43] <Shiral> At what age would a young Deryni reasonably be expected to use handfire, KK?
[18:43] <the_Bee> Alaric's mother would have showed him the portals if she'd lived.
[18:44] <Martine> Thanks! Phew. Don't have to re-work that short story <g>
[18:44] <virtualbabe> if she knew about one
[18:44] <scribbler> What if the child was very precocious, like Tieg Thuryn was?
[18:44] <KK> Handfire would be one of the earlier abilities, probably 8-10. Mindspeech with parents and other kin, much before that.
[18:44] <Martine> I'm playing around with the idea of a deaf Deryni - and how she would interact with people, human and Deryni.
[18:44] <the_Bee> If Alyce grew up there, her own mother would have showed her.
[18:45] <scribbler> oooh, sounds interesting, Martine!
[18:45] <jm> Tieg was an exception and even he forgets what he can do sometimes
[18:45] <KK> Alaric was definitely too young to be shown such things when his mother died.
[18:45] <Shiral> Ah, so if Briony were to form handfire at about six, she'd be considered ahead of the game...
[18:45] * Shiral quietly stirs a small pot on her story stove
[18:45] <leslie> What about a Deryni that went back in time to save themselves from being killed so they couldn't go back in time

[18:45] <KK> I think we won't get into time travel here.  Too many contradictions.
[18:46] <leslie> yup
[18:46] <jm> thank you
[18:46] <virtualbabe> Time travel is open to far too many paradoxes (paradoxi?)
[18:46] <Jessie> Katherine: does the deryni universe have the equivalent of stonehenge?
[18:46] <scribbler> Shiral -- has Jerusha peeked in on you lately?
[18:46] <leslie> there's a word for it--can't remember
[18:46] <Shiral> It would get WAY complicated
[18:46] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Too many paradoxes....for sure.

[18:46] <KK> There would be stone megalith-type structures, yes.
[18:46] <Shiral> Hi sam
[18:46] <Martine> Hi Sam!
[18:46] <leslie> hi sam
[18:46] <the_Bee> but it would explain how people could be claiming descent from Caeriessan survivors before Caeriesse sank.
[18:46] <Rambart20> isn't the only deryni who can time travel Camber?
[18:47] <KK> Hi, Sam.
[18:47] <Martine> Sam - what's the Team Deryni status page URL again? I lost it :-(
[18:47] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Did Camber timetravel?
[18:47] <Bynw> wb Sam!
[18:47] <jm> Who said he time traveled?
[18:47] <Shiral> He doesn't, really....
[18:47] <virtualbabe> Camber's more or less living outside time now
[18:47] <jm> Thought he was just kind of trapped here
[18:47] <scribbler> True, VB....
[18:47] <Shiral> He's just released from a physical body, or so it appears
[18:47] <leslie> Sorta like Santa
[18:48] <leslie> Camber'd make one fantastic Santa
[18:48] <Gamgee> Martine: it's at
http://folding.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/teampage?q=1084
[18:48] <KK> Woo, this gets coplicated, if we start putting Camber's time into God's time--which is, indeed, supposed to be fluid.

[18:49] <the_Bee> Discover magazine had an article about quantum theory and alternate timelines.
[18:49] <Martine> Leslie - they didn't celebrate Christmas like we do back then.
[18:50] <leslie> Nickolas? When was that
[18:50] <scribbler> Martine --- wasn't Epiphany (Twelfth Night) a bigger deal?
[18:50] <Martine> He was medieval - but very different from the figure we know
[18:50] <Shiral> Yes
[18:50] <Shiral> That was when the three kings came with their gifts
[18:50] <the_Bee> Yes, I noticed Chrismas day seemed more religious than festive
[18:50] <leslie> I'm sorry, off the topic
[18:50] <virtualbabe> it still is for some churches
[18:50] <Martine> St. Nicholas gave dowry money to poor girls so they could get married, iirc.
[18:51] <Shiral> Sounds pretty nice to me!
[18:51] <KK> Yep, Christmas was very much the religious celebration, and 12th Night/Epiphany was the time for feasting and gift-giving, echoing the Three Wisemen.
[18:51] <scribbler> Hey, they could hit the after-Christmas sales that way! ;)
[18:51] <Martine> LOL!
[18:51] <leslie> Wonder how far back the "Gift of the Magi" goes...
[18:51] <Martine> Ah, medieval shoppers after my own heart!
[18:51] <Kelos_al-Hazar> My overall user rank on Folding@home is only #11407...
[18:52] <KK> True.  And I had some SCA friends in CA who gave 12th Night presents instead of Christmas presents, precisely for that reason
[18:52] <Rambart20> is the torenthi christmas much different than the gwynedd christmas
[18:52] <leslie> interesting
[18:52] <Shiral> My dad used to tease us on Christmas eve by suggesting we wait until Epiphany, as his own father always did
[18:52] <Martine> The orthodox church celebrated a different date, iirc. They might still celebrate a different date.
[18:52] <Shiral> That tradition NEVER took in our household, for some reason!
[18:53] <Martine> LOL!
[18:53] <KK> Well, they're Orthodox, so their Christmas would be different on several counts.
[18:53] <Rambart20> would their date be the same?
[18:53] <Martine> In my house, we were allowed to open our stockings on Christmas Eve, so the parents could sleep in a little longer on Christmas day <g>
[18:53] <the_Bee> The Magi came from the East
[18:53] <KK> I'm not sure how that calendar would run.  But I know there would be differences.
[18:53] <leslie> Wonder if little kids back then woke their parents early in the morn
[18:54] <scribbler> We were allowed to open 1 gift Christmas Eve....
[18:54] <Shiral> Their Easter is also different on the Orthodox calendar
[18:54] <virtualbabe> most faiths have a celebration around the winter solstice IIRC
[18:54] <KK> Christmas trees were a Victorian invention; came with Prince Albert from Germany.
[18:54] <Ghostgames> We did presents on Christmas Eve and stockings on Christmas Morning. :-)
[18:54] <Martine> Along with white wedding dresses.
[18:54] <KK> Yes.
[18:54] <Shiral> We did a big blowout on the 25th
[18:54] <the_Bee> We do it when ever givers and giftees can get together
[18:54] <KK> But royal brides often wore gold or silver tissue cloth.
[18:54] <Rambart20> i got to open several on christmas eve as its my b'day
[18:55] <scribbler> Now we get 2 Christmases -- one with my family and one with Mark's....
[18:55] <Martine> Katherine, what period was metallic tissue cloth invented?
[18:55] <virtualbabe> couldn't wait another 24 hrs Bart?  ;-)
[18:55] <KK> Mostly, women just wore their best, up until mid-Victorian times and later.

[18:57] <Martine> Well, since my previous Kelson kidnap attempt resulting in a channel-surfing king... :-)
[18:58] <KK> Of course, by Victorian times, a bride of substance would then turn her wedding gown into her court gown for first presentation as a married woman.  And I'd assume she'd continue to wear it until it became too soiled--at
which time, it might be reworked/dyed/recycled in various ways.
