On page 480 of TKD Prince Nigel says that it has been two generations since a Haldane King has had to stand against Deryni magic, I checked the entry for King Malcolm in the Codex and found nothing.
"And as they tread the ruined Isle,
Where rest, at length,
the lord and slave,
They'll wondering ask, how hands so vile,
Could conquer hearts so brave?"

Malcolm's elder brother Cinhil (and their father Urien) fought the Festils at the Battle of Killingford. It's not clear if Malcolm was present himself.

Ah, so a question that may possibly be answered in The Road to Killingford!

Thanks, drakensis, BTW, for finding that info.
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

Malcolm was at Killingford.

At the end of In the King's Service, it's mentioned that Kai Anthony, Kenneth's grandfather, fought at the side of Malcolm.

Malcolm was just a young man then. He fought along side his father, King Urien, and his eldest brother, Prince Cinhil. They fought the Festil Pretenders of those years: Marek II and Marek III.  Cinhil II was the victor, following the death of King Urien, but he died a week after the battle. He is considered to be the uncrowned king. Malcolm's inheritance to the thrown was the week after Killingford. We don't yet know all the details of the arcane dual that ended that devistating three day war.
