Prayers please
« on: May 06, 2015, 03:09:24 AM »
I have a couple of really difficult pastoral situations here which are only going to be resolved by a change in mindset of the people involved and that's going to need lots of prayer. So any prayers, lit candles or good thoughts that you can offer up would be much appreciated.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
(Psalm 46 v1)

Good thoughts coming your way, revanne.  Hope everything turns out well.
From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggity beasties and things that go bump in the night...good Lord deliver us!

Hoping for a good resolution to the situation(s).
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

I don't want you to get into specifics--but how would Duncan handle a similar situation?  Or Arilan?

Now I'm imagining revanne with a "WWDD" reminder card or plaque on her desk to help her keep in mind, "What Would Duncan (or Denis) Do?"  ;D

She could do far worse; Loris, for example.

Thank you for the prayers and for the immeasurable gift of laughter which is of course in itself an answer to prayer.

What Loris would do is obvious - burn the obdurate folk on a trumped up charge but (quite apart from the ethics of that response, and the legality in 21st century Britain - there are only certain medieval institutions which we have kept) I do not feel that it would necessarily aid my reputation as a caring pastor.

Duncan would be endlessly patient without giving way on the principles (but then I am a fully signed up member of the Duncan supporters club); Denis would be more inclined to tell those involved what he thought of them, but would be painstaking in picking up the pieces.

They would both do what I do and need to do more of - pray :)

This might be fodder for a series of fanfics.  Take the fact-patterns from some of your pastoral cases and hand them to various clergy characters from the books.

I don't really operate in the same strata of society as the clergy in the canonical books. Annie's character Father Michael in Desse would be rather nearer my area. Not a bad idea though to create the character of a parish priest operating on the fringes of the stories. If you can stay around for twenty years or so ...

I identify a lot with Duncan - not because anyone wanted to burn me - but being in a Church where one's right to ministry is still disputed, and quite a lot of theraputic angst went into Tempter.

It is canonical that Arilan as a young priest was assigned to parish work for a few years so he could get to understand the common folk.
