Gout!
« on: August 09, 2011, 08:38:26 am »
My right big toe started hurting last night.

How I wish for a Deryni healer (assuming one could do something about gout.)

My uncle has gout, and his doctor told him to watch his diet.  Apparently there are a number of things you can avoid eating that will help with the gout.

Good luck.

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

Not sure if our Kelson-era Deryni Healers would know what to do for gout unless they've also been trained in "simples" (i.e., herbal medications), though Camber-era Healers would have had a good knowledge of the physician's arts as well as magical healing powers.

Sister Therese, the infirmarian from Nyford, says that it certainly won't hurt, and might actually help a bit, to try relieving the symptoms by eating a cup's measure of strawberries if you are fortunate enough to find any in season, or in the absence of strawberries or other berries, taking a mixture of two large spoonfuls of apple cider vinegar mixed with two large spoonfuls of honey.  Obviously, this should not take the place of anything your current physician might already have prescribed.  ;)  (But those were apparently two remedies that people in earlier times used to decrease the buildup of uric acid that causes gout, or as they'd put it, "restoring the balance of humours.")

I do watch my diet; I've learned, for example, that pork products tend to do a number on me, so I generally avoid those.

I'll look into the berries; the honey is no good for me, as I'm diabetic.  (Something else the Deryni healers couldn't do much for, also, I guess.)

blueberries and cherries or their juices help gout.  So does Alleve if you want a drug.

Since the cause is uric acid crystals (sharp little dudes), I would think a Healer could cure gout similar to how Prince Javan's foot was helped.

I'm taking ibuprofen, which takes the edge off the pain.  I'll stop at Krogers on the way home and see what they have in the way of berries.

Also, I think the honey in the honey and apple cider vinegar remedy was primarily to sweeten the vinegar to make it more palatable, and the apple cider vinegar is the actual "active ingredient" that's supposed to help the gout. So if you can find some way to use it without the honey, perhaps as an ingredient in something else (since I expect that simply drinking 2 tbsp of straight vinegar might be a bit much!), that might be useful.

And at least drinking a few spoonfuls of vinegar is a lot less extreme than my grandfather's "medication" for rheumatism, which was eating a teaspoon or so of poke berries (from the same plant used to make poke salad) whenever he had a flare-up.  And yes, poke berries are poisonous, so do NOT try that remedy...this is NOT a treatment recommendation!!!    :o  His body only tolerated it because he'd built up an immunity to the poison by increasing his dosage a half-berry at a time, starting with one half of a berry and working up over a number of months.  And even so, I still wouldn't recommend doing that, never mind that the man lived to be 94, and until shortly before his death he was limber enough to bend over and touch his toes....   :D

Reminds me of descriptions of how in Finland they'll build the sauna hut on the shore of a lake, and while you're baking inside the attendant cuts a hole in the ice into which you are supposed to dive as soon as you emerge from the hut.  They say it is good for the complexion; I'd rather have zits, thank you!  (The Finns are a very healthy people; this sort of treatment killed off the weaklings long ago.)

LOL!  I used to have a Finnish penpal.  He called me once at work because he was at an office party after-hours at his workplace, where he could make low-cost trans-Atlantic phone calls, so he was taking the opportunity to wish me a happy holiday, but he said he had to cut the conversation short because everyone was about to go to the sauna, and then from there they were going to take a quick dip in the ocean.  And this was a Christmas party.  Brrrr!!!!   :D

Another Scandinavian joke.  At the Lillehammer Olympics an athelete was sent to the wrong dorm.  When asked who had misdirected him, he replied, "A tall, good-looking blond in a turtleneck."

My father used to offer a cure for such ailments, which he swore never failed:  "Just amputate at the neck!"

I hope you feel better and such drastic surgery is not required in your case, LOL.  :)

It hurts a lot less.  Several doses of ibuprofen and several servings of berries (strawberries and blueberries and a small bottle of no-sugar-added blueberry/pomegranet juice); I have a big bottle of sour cherry juice, some of which I will have with breakfast tomorrow.  I think that the worst is past.

There has been a commercial on TV recently that talks about a prescription drug that targets uric acid (I can't remember the name of the drug).  It features a man carrying a large beaker full of uric acid everywhere he goes.
We will never forget the events of 9-11!!  USA!! USA!!

there are a couple of drugs that prevent gout.  However they have side effects and interactions so they dont work for everyone.
