Who shot Kenneth's leg in ITKS?

In the ambush where Kenneth gets his leg nailed to his horse by an arrow, who the heck were the attackers? I was expecting some tie-in to the Mearan campaign or the anti-Deryni fanatics, but for the life of me, I couldn't find any identification of who attacked them or why-- did I just miss it somehow, or did the attackers basically get away without any of them being killed, captured, or otherwise identified?

I just took a peek, and I'm not finding that information either.  I'm guessing they were never caught, and therefore never identified.  But assuming one of those two choices, my guess would be that they were Mearan separatists, though I'm guessing that primarily due to the location being a little north of Rhemuth, and because not too long before that, King Donal had installed a new governor for Meara.
