Title: Mobile Access
Post by: Bynw on April 15, 2015, 08:42:24 pm
Hi all,

We have installed a new theme which should load automatically when you access the forums at RhemuthCastle with a mobile device. And it should be more friendly than the full web version.

Thanks

Bynw

It would seem that the Donations redirect link and the Chatroom redirect link at the top of the page do not work with the mobile theme.

Testing from mobile view.

Hi, Bynw! Four things:

In mobile view, how can you mark all posts as read? My unread mail icon shows 657 new posts and won't let me mark all as read (that I can find, anyway). Since I all but have a second home on this board, I'm pretty sure I don't have that many unread messages unless it's counting the ones from before I joined, and I've read most of those too!

Second, is there any way to add formatting to posts created in mobile view (such as bold, italics, or even just adding emoticons), or only in desktop view?

Third, mobile view seems to be requiring me to enter my password whenever I want to make a post, rather than remembering who I am. Can this be changed?

Fourth, but most important to me-- is there any way we can choose to opt in and out of mobile view? I like the mobile view for a quick check of the board, but for other things I think it would be easier to work in the regular view. On Fanfiction.com, for instance, I might read stories in mobile view, but switch to desktop view to format and post story chapters or access features that can't be accessed via mobile view. (And yes, I used to format and post chapters via my phone a lot, since much of my free time is spent on the go.) So a similar ability to switch views at will would be of immense help here. I tried the link at the bottom of the home page, but it keeps insisting my password is incorrect. The one time I got it to accept my password, it switched me back to mobile view. Argh! *insert frustrated emoticon here*

Bynw, my inability to go into default (desktop) view seems to be fixed now. Don't know if you did that or if I just encountered a glitch earlier, but as long as it remains easy to switch back and forth between views as required, I think the mobile view should work fine for quick catch -ups with the latest posts or for quick posts or messages that don't require fancy formatting.

Whew.  I thought I had mucked up my iPhone again.  I found the only way to post was to go back to the default view.  That's OK, though.

Posting worked fine for me in the mobile view (aside from it only allowing basic text without formatting icons), but I'm on an Android phone, so maybe that's the difference.

One thing I find missing, is that I can't see who is logged on, or birthdays in the mobile view.   Of course, it might be because I don't know where to look.  I am a technology dinosaur.  (Roar.)

Now I can see who is logged in, but I can't see how to log out in mobile view.

Which means after I post this, it will be embarassingly obvious. *sigh*

The Mobile theme is meant to make reading the posts on the forum easier on a mobile device that has a small screen. That does mean some functionality does not exist and if needed would require the desktop view.

I haven't fully explored the features yet of this view. If you have tips for others please post them here. I'll look into everything as time allows and you can always change what theme is being used.

Whoa, did you just change the way the default view looks like in just the last ten minutes? I logged into the forum on my phone and switched to the default (regular) view just a few minutes ago while parked at the gas station down the road. Got back home and figured I'd log back on again, expecting to see the default view still, or at least the mobile view I'd seen earlier, but now there's an entirely new view that's sort of like a cross between the default view and the bare bones mobile view.  So is this really a third view, or a weird phone glitch, or am I simply going crazy?  :D

Not crazy. This is another mobile version. Attempting to find the best one that works with lots of features. It may change again :)

In that case, I did like that second mobile version better than the first.

So do I so far ... There will be a 3rd one to try out. Not sure when I will get it installed yet.

Links to chat, Paypal donations, and the website work in this view. Mind, the Mibbit chat window is horrible to use with a small phone screen, but would serve if you just need to get a quick message to the room. (Then again, I have a dedicated IRC app for the rare occasions I need to chat from my phone. But someone else might find that helpful. )

Over 1000 views to this thread since you started it this morning? Can that actually be correct?

Checked on the mobile version last night, and didn't care for it much. This second version is better, and less jarring since it is similar to the desktop view. Definitely easier to read. I haven't tried to post from my phone yet, though.

Looking forward to version three when you get to it, but thus far, V2 has my vote.

Actually version 3 is live now. It's a better more updated edition of version 2

In a word, yes. I'm sure it is accurate as everyone clicks on it a 1000 times

Now I have to check to see which version I was looking at.

Hi, bynw! I sort of like the new skin, but I'm having some issues with the private message section. I can see messages are there, but I can't read them unless I choose the Quote option. Surely there is supposed to be some way to read a message before deciding if you need to reply? Maybe it's just like that on my phone, or I haven't found the right spot to tap. I'll keep trying. Other than that, I like it pretty well.
