Weekend 2008! (Oct 11th & 12th 2008) -  http://derynicon.rhemuthcastle.com

[18:12] * KK has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[18:12] <DeryniBot> Hi there KK! Welcome to the chat.
[18:12] <Mistyck> ah ok
[18:12] <jemler> hi kk
[18:12] <Mistyck> hiyas KK
[18:12] <RainbowDragon> Greetings KK!
[18:12] <KK> Hi, all.
[18:12] <the_Bee> howdy KK!
[18:12] <RainbowDragon> How was your week?
[18:13] <KK> Been trying to tame my new MacPro--with great
frustration.
[18:13] <RainbowDragon> uh oh
[18:13] <RainbowDragon> lap top?
[18:13] <jemler> try a shotgun :)
[18:13] <Mistyck> that's not fun
[18:13] <KK> Yep.  And I have no idea where saved .doc files go.  Is a
mystery.
[18:14] <the_Bee> lion-tamers use whips and chairs :)
[18:14] <RainbowDragon> doesn't it give you the option of saving to
the folder of your choice?
[18:14] <KK> In many respects, it's brilliant.  But it is not
computing as I know it.
[18:14] <Kelric> heh
[18:15] <bynw-away> hiyas KK
[18:15] <KK> Well, if I knew where the folders are....  Is there
something equivalent to Explorer, where you can arrange folders in a
tree?  There must be, but I've yet to find it.
[18:15] <KK> Hi, Bynw.
[18:15] <the_Bee> is there a search feature?
[18:15] * bynw-away is now known as Bynw
[18:15] <RainbowDragon> The Mac expert is here now... we can ask him
[18:15] <Mistyck> wb Bynw
[18:16] <KK> There is--but I haven't found it yet.  Everything is
called something else.
[18:16] <the_Bee> that's why I'm a mac-o-phobe
[18:17] <KK> There must be a book for super-dummies--but I haven't
found that yet, either.  All technology assumes that one has far more
knowledge than one does.
[18:17] <the_Bee> e.g. that one understands the commands
[18:18] <RainbowDragon> There are computer books for beginners out
there and I'm sure they have Mac ones too
[18:18] <jemler> my favorite Mac has 2 all-beef patties, special
sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions on a sesame seed bun
[18:18] <RainbowDragon> lol, jemler
[18:18] <KK> I've gotten a cordless external mouse, which has helped a
bit.  The touch pad was driving me crazy.
[18:18] <KK> Even the "beginner" books assume far too much.
[18:18] * the_Bee nods
[18:20] <jemler> thanks rd
[18:21] <KK> Other than that, though, it's been a reasonable week.
The office is starting to look less like a junk room and more like an
incipient office--and the desk unit and storage modules are going to
be installed on September 20th.
[18:21] <jemler> to be filled on the 21st?
[18:21] <RainbowDragon> good news then
[18:21] <the_Bee> I hate when I ask about an acronym and I'm told what
the words are but not what the device is
[18:21] <Bynw> Tika got a new laptop over the weekend and we both
weren't liking the touch pad on it either
[18:21] <jemler> like what bee?
[18:22] <Bynw> i like the external mice now too
[18:22] <jemler> yeah, the internal ones kept chewing through the
drive cables!
[18:23] * RainbowDragon smacks jemler with a goose down pillow
[18:23] <the_Bee> like "RAM:  I know it stands for random access
memory, but if I didn't know what that was i'd still be in the dark
[18:23] <KK> This one is a microsoft one, and the little USB stick
snaps into the underside of the mouse when not in use, thereby turning
off the battery and saving it.  I like it a lot.
[18:23] <jemler> as distinct from a goose up pillow?
[18:23] <RainbowDragon> *nods*
[18:24] <the_Bee> what's USB?
[18:24] <jemler> universaL SERIAL BUS suppossed to work no matter
which port you put it in
[18:25] <jemler> allows for hot swapping
[18:25] <Bynw> universal serial bus is what USB stands for ... look
like a rectangle end on one side ... most printers and other external
devices use a usb connection now days
[18:25] <Mistyck> vs lukewarm or cold swapping or even wife swapping?
[18:25] <the_Bee> that's what I mean.  I know "port" but what's
"serial"?
[18:25] <the_Bee> and BUS?
[18:26] <jemler> what have i started? bad boy john, bad bad bad!
[18:26] <Mistyck> hehehe
[18:26] <KK> I discovered two more of those slats on the side of my
flat screen monitor--which is convenient for plugging in occasional
devices.  (Got a card reader to interface with my digital camera, the
dock of which has ceased to read the card, even though there are
pictures in the device.  Fortunately, it still charges the camera.
[18:26] <the_Bee> a cereal port is my mouth
[18:27] <jemler> no other biological/anatomical ports please
[18:27] <the_Bee> heheheh
[18:27] <KK> A lot of new computers don't even have connectors for the
old-style keyboards and mice and such.  It's all USB now--which
actually is a great blessing.
[18:27] <Mistyck> yes it is
[18:28] <jemler> not really. my old computer had a usb keyboard, but
when i work on other peoples computers, they may only have older
ports.
[18:28] <jemler> i swap my kbd to make it easier
[18:29] <KK> Anyway, I'm going to SF on Wednesday to visit my mother,
who now has a minimac, and we can compare moaning and groaning.  And
my niece is a mac user, so I'm hoping to pick her brain.  Very savvy
young lady.
[18:29] <RainbowDragon> good good
[18:29] <KK> Fortynately, there are adaptors.
[18:29] <Mistyck> have fun in the City by the Bay :)
[18:29] <the_Bee> I tried to upgrade to DSL.  after many failed
attempts to get it working, I got an email from my ISP say sorry DSL
isn't available in you area.  so they switched me from platinum to
free
[18:30] <jemler> i know. i have a case full of them
[18:30] <KK> For editing, though, a real mouse is essential;
impossible to edit in a timely fashion with a touchpad.
[18:30] <jemler> bee, i set up a home network to my mothers computer.
she can get on comcast now too, and it doesn't add to my bill.
[18:30] <KK> Yeah, I haven't seen my mom in about a year and a half,
so it's a long overdue visit.  Looking forward to it.
[18:31] <Kelric> touch mice really are a pain
[18:31] <Mistyck> I like the touch pad on my laptop.  Maybe it's not
quite as finicky
[18:31] <jemler> my sister won't give mine back!
[18:31] <KK> It's fine for surfing the net, but really slows down
editing when one is writing.  Too fiddly.
[18:31] <the_Bee> is it hard to know exactly where to press on a touch
pad?
[18:32] <Mistyck> not really
[18:32] <KK> No, you touch and drag.  That part is ok, but it's much
more sensitive than a regular mouse.
[18:32] <Mistyck> but different brands have different levels of
sensitivity on their pads too
[18:32] <jemler> but when you try to cut/paste, it really gets old
fast
[18:32] <KK> Amen, brother!
[18:32] <Mistyck> see, I don't have a problem with cut/paste
[18:33] <jemler> you use scissors?
[18:33] <KK> Maybe not, but I'll bet you'd be a lot faster with a real
mouse.
[18:33] <Mistyck> lol...no, my pad isn't quite as touchy
[18:33] <Mistyck> could be KK
[18:33] <Bynw> some touchpads are a pain. the one tika has in her new
laptop is one of those
[18:34] <Bynw> i've had ones that arent in the past
[18:34] * the_Bee has never seen a touchpad
[18:34] <KK> Of course, one can do what Scott has done, and get an
external mouse and keyboard, and a flat-screen monitor to get the size
up to a more user-friendly size.
[18:35] <Bynw> which macbookpro did you get?
[18:35] <jemler> my laptop has a 15" monitor
[18:35] <Bynw> 15 or 17 inch monitor
[18:35] <Bynw> 2.2 ghz or 2.4 ghz speed??
[18:35] <KK> Also, I prefer a PC mouse; miss the right-clicj button on
a macmouse.
[18:35] <Bynw> you can use the right click types on a mac though
[18:35] <KK> Mine is a 15; Scott's is a 17.
[18:36] <KK> Yes, I know.  :-)
[18:36] <Bynw> i'm looking at the 15 inch 2.2ghz ... with maxed out
4gigs of ram probably the 160gig harddrive
[18:36] <KK> Now you're getting technical.  Haven't a clue without
looking it up.
[18:37] <Kelric> heh
[18:37] <Kelric> one more semester until I get my masters.  yay
[18:37] <KK> I know it's way up there.
[18:38] <the_Bee> and then will you get a mistress, kelric?
[18:38] <jemler> get your masters what?
[18:38] <Kelric> library science
[18:39] <jemler> sshh!
[18:39] <KK> Woo-hoo!  Happy final semester!
[18:40] <RainbowDragon> then he will be a professional shusher in a
library somewhere like Shiral!
[18:41] <Kelric> heh
[18:41] <KK> Hmmm, thunder rumbling in the distance.  I'd better think
about getting off-line.  This new DSL is finicky even in good
weather.  And it doesn't like me to be online on the PC while Scott is
online with the airport.
[18:41] <Kelric> KK. when are you planning to head out ot SF?
[18:41] <KK> Wednesday, and I return on the 7th.  I'll try to touch
base with you guys next week from there.
[18:41] <the_Bee> we'll look forward to it
[18:42] <Kelric> oh.  have fun.
[18:42] <KK> With this new laptop, with 3-4 hours of battery time, I
might actually get a couple of interviews done on the flight out.
[18:42] <the_Bee> interviews?
[18:42] <Kelric> i'll be back in that area in early october for the
SJSU 150th anniversary Homecoming game.
[18:42] <jemler> they let you use on the plane?
[18:42] <Kelric> yes they do. as long as you use no wireless stuff
[18:43] <KK> Written answers to questions they sent me some weeks/
months ago.  No on line stuff.
[18:44] <Mistyck> cool
[18:44] <Bynw> just make sure no wireless stuff is enabled
[18:44] <Bynw> needs to be turned off not just not in use ...
[18:44] <KK> How do I do that?
[18:45] <Mistyck> you have to right click your wireless network icon
and disable it
[18:45] <KK> I think I have to click on the compass to connect, don't
I?
[18:46] <Bynw> on a windows machine Mistyck you do ... not sure on a
mac off hand. my mac doesnt have wireless ability
[18:46] <Mistyck> yea I was going to add, but mine is a windows
machine
[18:46] * alaric has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[18:46] <DeryniBot>  alaric enters the chat as RainbowDragon passes
around a plate of cheese.
[18:47] <Mistyck> hiyas alaric
[18:47] <the_Bee> hi alaric
[18:47] <KK> I'll have to do some further research.  Must call our mac
guy tomorrow and see what the conflict is with both machines trying to
be online at hte same time.
[18:47] <Bynw> i'm sure it would be in system preferences
[18:47] <jemler> hi alaric
[18:47] <the_Bee> just find out before your plane takes off,
Katherine :)
[18:47] <KK> I'll play with it a bit.  I may have to confine my travel
work to terminal time.
[18:48] <KK> Not to worry.
[18:48] <Mistyck> a lot of airports now have free wireless too...
[18:48] <alaric> hello just finished childe morgan, great book!! what
is the next one called? release date?? I am chomping at the bit here
Perhaps Marluk waiting?
[18:48] <Mistyck> I loved having it at the KC airport while I was
waiting for my friend's flight and before my plane took off
[18:48] <the_Bee> next one is still to be written
[18:49] <KK> Working title is just Childe III, and I haven't actually
started it yet, alas, so it's going to be a year or two.
[18:49] <Mistyck> are you new here alaric?
[18:49] <the_Bee> have you read all the earlier books, alaric?
[18:49] <alaric> oh well, this is my first time here I have read all
the Deryni book at least 5 times, can't wait
[18:50] <KK> Hmmm, thunder rumbling again, and getting closer.  We've
had some bodacious thunderstorms in the past few days--and some much-
needed rain.  Things have greened up nicely.
[18:50] <the_Bee> have you tried the Adept books?
[18:50] <Mistyck> welcome here and you picked a great time as
Katherine is here today and most Sundays at this time
[18:50] <jemler> get the codex yet, alaric?
[18:50] <Mistyck> good to hear that things are getting greener there
KK
[18:50] <alaric> no but saw it in the book store the other day, have
not read the adept series
[18:51] * jemler gasps in surprise
[18:51] <Mistyck> Katherine, who are the interviews for?
[18:51] <KK> Sorry I can't stick around, Alaric--but chat with these
fine folk.  And hopefully, I'll see you all next week.
[18:51] <alaric> Katherine, any chance of writing about the Anvillers?
More about Torenth?
[18:51] <RainbowDragon> alaric, KK is Katherine Kurtz, the author!
[18:52] <alaric> figured that out, thanks
[18:52] <jemler> lol
[18:52] <KK> One is for an online site; I'll post the info when I've
done it.  Can't remember what the other one is, off the top of my
head.  (Gives you an idea how long it's been sitting on my desktop.)
[18:52] <Mistyck> take care Katherine and thanks for stopping by.
Have a great week and be safe.
[18:52] <the_Bee> have a good week, KK
[18:52] <Mistyck> cool.  Thanks KK
[18:52] <alaric> have a great week
[18:52] <KK> Thank you, all.
[18:53] <jemler> say hi you your mom and neice
[18:53] <Kelric> see you next week
[18:53] <RainbowDragon> thank you for stopping by, KK
[18:53] * KK steps onto her Portal, waves goodnight, and disappears in
a shower of green sparkles.
[18:53] * KK Quit
[18:53] * KK has left IRC
