[18:17] <The_Bee> Yes. often the remaining kidney gets the disease.
[18:17] <Laurna> Hello KK
[18:17] <The_Bee> Hi KK
[18:17] <judyward> I don't know if I could do intravenous. Subcutaneous is a lot easier.
[18:17] <Shiral> Hi KK
[18:17] <Jemler> hi kk
[18:17] <judyward> Hi, KK!
[18:18] <The_Bee> Actually, it may be subcutaneous.
[18:18] <KK> Hi, everyone.  Does someone have a kidney problem?
[18:18] <@Evie> Hi KK
[18:18] <The_Bee> My cat.
[18:18] <@Evie> Melantha does
[18:18] <KK> Besides Jemler, I mean.
[18:18] <Shiral> Oh wait. I was doing SubQ  with Nina. But 3 arms would still have been handy
[18:18] <Shiral> We're talking about kitty meds
[18:18] <KK> Oh, no, Bee.  How sad.  Can she be treated?
[18:19] <The_Bee> Melantha lost a kidney to cancer in 2015.  Now her remaining kidney is not at its best.
[18:19] <KK> Oh, dear.  How old is she?
[18:20] <Derynifank> Hi KK
[18:20] <The_Bee> the vet gave be an oral diuretic, a food supplement. some fluid and a kidney-helping catfood.
[18:20] <judyward> I was just about to ask how old she is, too.
[18:20] <The_Bee> Melantha will be 13 in august.
[18:20] <~bynw> Hi KK
[18:21] <judyward> Oh, 13 is not old for a cat.
[18:21] <~DesertRose> Hi KK!
[18:21] <Laurna> How was everyone's Easter?
[18:21] <Shiral> Hi DR
[18:21] <~DesertRose> Sorry, I'm at my mom's doing laundry and we just finished eating supper.
[18:21] <Shiral> I made dinner for my mother and sister. We had a nice time. I even hid some chocolate eggs for them
[18:22] <KK> Good luck getting her to eat the kidney RX cat food.  None of mine ever would.  And sadly, kidney failure is one of the most common things that go wrong in older cats.  Still, 13 is not that old--says the woman who has 19 and 17-year-old cats, and just lost the 16 year-old.
[18:22] <The_Bee> pretty good . My church holds an Easter dinner; many homeless people come.
[18:22] <Laurna> Yum
[18:22] «--- Evie (~IceChat9@OWIRCN-10973a3a.al.charter.com) has Quit (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)
[18:22] <~DesertRose> My Easter was lovely; I got the now-traditional Dove solid dark chocolate bunny, plus (no idea where my mom found this) solid dark chocolate bunny ears.

[18:22] <~DesertRose> Hi jer
[18:22] <~DesertRose> Hi jerusha
[18:22] <~bynw> hi jerusha
[18:22] <jerusha> Hi Everyone
[18:22] <Laurna> Hello Jerusha
[18:23] <jerusha> Hi Laurna
[18:23] <judyward> Hi, DR & Laurna
[18:23] <KK> The bunny ears obliously were bitten off a whole rabbit.  I understand that the ears are usually the first to go.
[18:23] <The_Bee> Do you everfeel cruel , biting off a chocolate bunny's ears while it's still alive?
[18:23] <The_Bee> Hi Jerusha
[18:23] <~bynw> no
[18:23] <jerusha> Actually, I take the ears and the head
[18:23] <judyward> No, it shouldn't be so delicious.
[18:24] <The_Bee> i do, a little.  a very little.
[18:24] <judyward> Right before you bite them off, Bee?
[18:24] <jerusha> It tastes too good to feel guilty
[18:24] <Shiral> I just stick to the eggs--can't eat a chocolate bunny
[18:24] <judyward> The first bite is hard to take.

[18:24] »» derynibot gives channel operator status to Evie
[18:25] <jerusha> Hi evie
[18:25] <Laurna> I haven't gotten a chocolet bunny in years. But I have no trouble eating the See's fudge eggs with flowers on them.  the flowers get eaten first.
[18:25] <judyward> Re-hi, Evie
[18:25] <The_Bee> yes, judy.  I feel better when I take the whole head.
[18:25] <Shiral> WB Evie. Did the Torenthis try to abduct you?
[18:25] <@Evie> Apparently I lost connection and didn't know. I just thought everyone got quiet.
[18:25] <judyward> I love the Cadbury Carmel Eggs
[18:25] <jerusha> We were munching bunnies
[18:25] <@Evie> My wifi connection at home has been really spotty of late.
[18:26] <~bynw> probably something interfering with the radio signal
[18:26] <@Evie> I like the Cadbury Mini Eggs. The creme filled eggs are too sweet for me.
[18:26] <Jemler> i have the log, evie.
[18:26] <Laurna> Maybe the bunnies were eating your cable line in revenge.
[18:26] <The_Bee> I had a live bunny once.
[18:26] <The_Bee> a pet, not a meal
[18:26] <judyward> We had a live bunney when we were kids
[18:26] <jerusha> Oh good!
[18:27] <Laurna> lol
[18:27] <judyward> It was a big, white bunny that Daddy found hopping around in downtown Inverness.
[18:27] <Derynifank> Was also having connection problems so had to go get my laptop
[18:27] <jerusha> Was it late?
[18:28] <The_Bee> Rabbit-lovers say the lop-ears are most intelligent.  but they don't look like bunnies to me.
[18:28] <judyward> They are cute, though.
[18:28] <Laurna> Love  a lop eared
[18:28] <jerusha> Bunnies are cute
[18:28] <Derynifank> Think I am connected again. Can anyone see this?
[18:29] <Laurna> yes DFK
[18:29] <judyward> Yes, I see you
[18:29] <jerusha> I can see it, DFK
[18:29] <KK> Lop-ears are cute.
[18:29] <Derynifank> Thanks. Wasnt sure if I was really back
[18:29] <Laurna> And satin rabbits are so soft
[18:29] <judyward> Haven't seen satins.
[18:29] <The_Bee> There was a news story about a rent-a-bunny, for people who want to try if they're up to the responsibility of caring for a pet bunny.
[18:30] <judyward> Quanah says, Bunny? Where's a bunny?
[18:30] <jerusha> It went that way
[18:31] <~DesertRose> I thought I'd laugh myself sick when I saw the bunny ears.
[18:31] <~DesertRose> And also, Dove dark chocolate, so yum!
[18:31] <judyward> Just ears? No bunny?
[18:31] <Laurna> The last wild bunny to visit my door step was in my cat's mouth.  The bunny was unharmed but my cat was meowing saying, I'll give you the rabbit if you give me the good canned food and not the dried stuff.
[18:32] <~DesertRose> I got a full bunny, plus a "spare" pair of ears.  All solid dark chocolate.
[18:32] <The_Bee> "satin rabbit"-- an actual breed, or a toy rabbit made of satin?
[18:32] <jerusha> Clever cat
[18:32] <judyward> Did you get the bunny away from her Laurna
[18:32] <Laurna> They are a smallish black rabbit with the softest fur you every felt.
[18:33] <The_Bee> ah, they siund cute!
[18:33] <The_Bee> sound cute too
[18:33] <Derynifank> Had not heard of those
[18:33] <judyward> Me, neither
[18:33] <Laurna> Yes, the cat dropped the bunny as soon as the ransome was meet.  I gave her a full can of meat and the bunny jumped away.
[18:33] <jerusha> A good trade
[18:33] <judyward> Good!!
[18:34] <Shiral>  Especially for the bunny!
[18:34] <Derynifank> Smarrt bunny, he ran for it
[18:34] <jerusha> That would explain why the bunny now travels with a can of cat food
[18:34] <The_Bee> According to Chinese mythology, there's a rabbit on the moon.
[18:34] <judyward> LOL!
[18:34] <Derynifank> Scout bunny, always prepared
[18:34] <Laurna> She tries to do that still with baby squires and lizards. but the ransom was never as well meet as with the bunny.
[18:35] <The_Bee> only squires? no knights?
[18:35] <Laurna> LOL did I say squires,  LOL again.
[18:35] <@Evie> Baby squirrels, I assume. Otherwise, better warn Brendan!
[18:35] <judyward> Oh, squirrels! OK
[18:35] <Laurna> I can never get my squirrels and my squires straight
[18:36] <jerusha> OK, where is that picture with the squirrel in armor?
[18:36] <@Evie> Squirrels aren't good at helping armor you up
[18:36] <judyward> Squires eat more than squirrels
[18:36] <Laurna> lol
[18:36] <@Evie> OMG, the mental pictures! LOL
[18:36] <~DesertRose> LOL
[18:37] <~DesertRose> Stupid Squire Tricks meets Squirrel!  ;)
[18:37] <Laurna> you would think by now I could remember that spelling error
[18:38] <@Evie> The rodent has an L at the end. Also an extra r, but if you at least the L in there, it's easy to know what word is meant.
[18:38] <jerusha> My memory is way to short to remember all of my spelling errors
[18:38] <Laurna> THank you Evie,  I well endeavor to try and remember that.
[18:38] <~bynw> my little bengal princess is demanding attention
[18:38] <Shiral> I wouldn't think squirrel squires would work all that well
[18:39] <Laurna> lol
[18:39] <jerusha> They work for peanutws
[18:39] <@Evie> And squire squirrels would be out of work without knight squirrels
[18:39] <jerusha> peanuts. that is
[18:39] <~DesertRose> Or acorns
[18:39] <The_Bee> Some of the knights may be nuts.
[18:39] <Shiral> YOu'd have to find SUCH tiny horses for them
[18:39] <@Evie> Most knights I know are nuts, DH included
[18:40] <jerusha> :)
[18:40] <Laurna> lol
[18:40] <judyward> Ooo! We have emojis on Kiwi.
[18:40] <jerusha> Squirrels could ride cats, but it would not end well
[18:41] <judyward> If you raised them together it might work.

[18:48] <@Evie> I have seen some preview photos of another female fig in that scale, and of a male fig, but his features weren't painted on the prototype, so I don't know what the final version will look like.
[18:48] <kiwi_65> how do i do that
[18:48] <KK> So, they're just coming out with these?
[18:48] <@Evie> But they are surprisingly less expensive than the other poseable 1:12 scale figures I know of, which are made for the dollhouse collector market
[18:49] <Shiral> Tati has just arrived to say hello
[18:49] <jerusha> You'll have to scale down the living space for her
[18:49] <kiwi_65> what are  we looking at
[18:49] <jerusha> Hi  Tati
[18:49] <Laurna> Oh I see they are doll house size.  That would be good
[18:49] <judyward> Hi, Tati
[18:50] <@Evie> These are made for the action figure collector market, and normally this brand is too expensive for me, but their 1:12 figures are (just barely, if I save my money up) more affordable for my budget.
[18:50] <@Evie> https://flic.kr/s/aHskSCBm29 , Kiwi
[18:50] <@Evie> 1:12 scale fully poseable action figure
[18:50] <Laurna> Hard to make clothes that small.
[18:51] <KK> Probably lots more accessory-type available for dollhouse scale.  But would you be able to do medieval?
[18:51] <@Evie> I make most of Amy's, except for the shoes and a few skirts that come off a Chelsea doll (Barbie's toddler sister).
[18:51] <@Evie> Walmart had Chelsea dolls on sale for $1 each, so I bought several of them, mainly for the shoes.
[18:51] <kiwi_65> cool figure
[18:52] <@Evie> Thank you! I saw a new female head and clothing set for her on Instagram recently, but that one isn't out yet, and doesn't come with a body, so Amy would have to share hers. LOL
[18:52] <Laurna> Oh no, now she has to share her head.
[18:52] <Laurna> LOL
[18:53] <kiwi_65> just imagine being able to trade bodies
[18:53] <judyward> Off with her head!
[18:53] <@Evie> And I might not get it unless the quoted price was a mistake, since it cost over 2x what I paid for my complete figure, so I can't see paying 2 times more for just a head and clothes!
[18:54] <Laurna> best to purchase the whole figuare, head and body. At least that is my way of thinking
[18:54] <judyward> Gotta go, y'all. Fed the dogs & now Lou is making dinner noises.  Have a great week!

[18:57] <KK> Wow, she's hot.  Why has it taken folk so long to think of doing this scale like the bigger ones that we have?
[18:57] <jerusha> Oh dear, Bee
[18:58] <@Evie> I have no idea, especially since this scale appeals to a ready made market of dollhouse artists in addition to their usual action figure market

[18:58] <Jemler> sorry to hear that, bee. i know te feeling.
[18:58] <jerusha> Hope the supplements and food help
[18:59] <Bee> i just hope I remember the vet's instructions correctly.
[18:59] <@Evie> There is a lady on Instagram who has been buying up a lot of the original ones like mine, removing their original hair, and making wigs out of mohair for them in different colors.
[18:59] <@Evie> Also doing eye and lip color repaints on them, which is more detailed than my eyes are capable on focusing on, unfortunately.
[18:59] <jerusha> I think I like the original hair
[18:59] <Laurna> A little hair dresser and makeup artest.
[19:00] <Laurna> Too small for me to see well.
[19:00] <@Evie> Since they have really tiny faces. If you think of the Star Wars plastic action figures, or the new Marvel superhero action figures, the faces are that small.  Like my thumbnail.
[19:01] <@Evie> Did I get disconnected again?
[19:02] <~bynw> nope
[19:02] <Bee> you're still here, Evie
[19:02] <@Evie> good
[19:02] <kiwi_65> I still see you
[19:02] <@Evie> Since the last two times it got silent, I was actually disconnected.  :-D
[19:02] <Laurna> Are the Marvel superhero action figures the same size. Are they posible too. I know think starwars ones are not possible.
[19:03] <@Evie> THe funny thing is, the white haired doll looks almost exactly like my game character in Avakin Life, except that her hair is usually a dark blue.  (Or black with blue highlights.)
[19:04] <@Evie> I think some can be posed, but they are hard plastic with molded plastic clothing. But there are some figures with fabric clothes that are around this same scale. I forget the name, since I'm not usually in the market for those.
[19:04] <Bee> In comics, black hair often has blue higjlights.

[19:06] <Laurna> welcome to the chat
[19:06] <Bee> Welcome!
[19:06] <@Evie> Good to meet you, Rillan
[19:06] <Shiral> What is your favorite book, Rillan?
[19:06] <Rillan> Thanks everyone
[19:06] <~DesertRose> Yes, IIRC, I created Rillan's account within the last week.  Welcome to the Castle and the chat, and I'm sorry to pop in just to leave right away.
[19:06] <Bee> who's your favorite KK character?
[19:07] <Shiral> Welcome to chat, BTW. =o)
[19:07] <@Evie> "There will be a test."  LOL!  OK, not really.  :-D
[19:07] <Rillan> King Javan's Year is my favorite
[19:07] <Laurna> MIne is Alaric, seconded only by Rhys

[19:08] <Bee> Yes, Javen deserved better than he got.

[19:08] <Bee> Hi DFK
[19:08] <@Evie> I like KJY best of the immediately post-Camber books, at least if I feel like crying like I"m cutting onions.
[19:08] <Derynifank> My connection is being really weird tonight
[19:08] <@Evie> Though the Kelson era books are my first love.
[19:09] <Rillan> Favorite Characters would start will Javan then then Kelson
[19:09] <@Evie> Because Duncan.... *sigh*   :-D  Well, and I just like that era in general.
[19:09] <KK> Yes, early chat next week.
[19:09] <Shiral> Would love to listen in on a conversation with Javan and Kelson
[19:09] <@Evie> That would be fascinating
[19:09] <Laurna> Oh yes that would be good
[19:10] <Rillan> Would definitely love that
[19:10] <Shiral> If such a thing were possible, given how many generations are between them
[19:10] <Jemler> my least favorite was KKB. Jehanas conversion was just too fast
[19:10] <@Evie> Maybe in a dream.  An eerily too real to be entirely a dream sort of dream.
[19:10] <Laurna> What if there was a painting of Javan in Kelson's tower room and it had the majic ability of time warping Rapport
[19:11] <Bee> I wonder how much Kelson knows about Javan.  Much of the history of that period may have been lost or distorted by kelson'stime.
[19:11] <Shiral> But, since Kelson names his first son Javan, I'd imagine he'd studied  his ancestor
[19:11] <Laurna> My thoughts too. Shiral
[19:11] »» ~bynw smiles at Laurna "I know of a place like that, but its not in the 11 Kingdoms."
[19:12] <Derynifank> Actually Jehana's conversion had actually started earlier than that
[19:12] <Bee> Is that canonic?  kelson'skidshaven't been born yet, have they?
[19:12] <Shiral> IT's in the Codex
[19:12] <@Evie> The beginning of Jehana's turnaround was hinted at in earlier books, though it took until KKB for her to make the complete turn.  I just wanted to shake some sense into Kelson.  It's a wonder Araxie didn't smack him into the next kingdom. :-D
[19:12] <Laurna> That is in the Codex Bee
[19:13] <Rillan> That's interesting, time travels not something I think any of the Deryni have ever talked about is it?
[19:13] <Jemler> Time Portals?
[19:13] <@Evie> It's not, though I'm wondering if maybe Lewis ap Norfal's disastrous experiment might have been an attempt at time travel that went badly wrong.
[19:13] <Bee> Doesn't the Codex also name a child Sophonisba?
[19:13] <Laurna> No but Rapport is common. so why not an odd whole in the fabric of time
[19:13] <Derynifank> That would be fascinationg
[19:13] <@Evie> It's a theory, anyway
[19:14] <Shiral> Sophonisba is a penance of a name that not even Charissa would have deserved
[19:14] <@Evie> But given the history of the Eleven Kingdoms, it would truly suck to be a Deryni attempting time travel and end up in an even more hostile time period and burning for your curiosity!
[19:14] <Laurna> That is right Evie.  I do believe that Lewis ap Norfal discovered a time rift. so there it is conical. hah
[19:14] <KK> The Codex is not canon except for organizing the material that has appeared in the books.  So Kelson't first son might not be named Javan.  Or maybe it would.  ;-)
[19:15] <Derynifank> True Evie
[19:15] <Shiral> Welll....the baby could have far worse namesakes than Javan.....
[19:15] <Bee> KK, do you feel obligated to use codex names for characters yet to be created?
[19:16] <@Evie> In that case, Jamyl's son Sextus would like you to know he has a silly name, although it allowed for me to create a great scene joking about it in one of my fanfic stories.  :-D
[19:16] <Laurna> Oh dear, are you shaking up my belief in the codex.
[19:17] <Bee> Javan desesvesthe honor a having a namesake.
[19:17] <@Evie> The Codex is subject to change if the Author has a better idea in the course of writing a novel, and the Codex details can't be made to fit the story. :-)
[19:17] <Rillan> I didn't know that the Codex wasn't canon
[19:17] <Laurna> I agree with that Bee
[19:17] <KK> No, Bee.  Though if Rob made choices that I agree with, the names might stand.
[19:17] <KK> Exactly, Evie.
[19:18] <Shiral> Are we thinking about Road to Killingford a little maybe? =o)
[19:18] »» Laurna listens carefully to the answer
[19:18] <KK> Rillian, Rob tried to flesh out the timeline, so he filled in names of characters that I haven't gotten around to writing yet.  But some of his choices were a little eggregioius.
[19:18] <Shiral> Granted, this year has hardly been conducive to creativity
[19:18] <@Evie> That said, the Codex makes for really rich fanfic fodder, and since I tend to think of Fanfic as existing in a similar but different Alternate Universe in which things might occur in parallel or differently from KK's universe, that's fine as far as I'm concerned.
[19:18] <Bee> Didn't Rob name some characters after vegetables?
[19:19] <KK> You got it, Evie.
[19:19] <~bynw> and great for gaming in the Deryni universe as well
[19:19] <KK> This is my own annus horribilis, Shiral.  Hopefully by this time next year....
[19:19] <Shiral> He did come up with some....unfortunate names
[19:20] <@Evie> Sigarilla
[19:20] <Shiral> Yes, it definitely is. I hope the second half improves
[19:20] <Rillan> I guess I never looked that closely at the genealogies
[19:21] <@Evie> Laurna has pieced together some lovely genealogies, including managing to speculatively trace a line back to Camber for Alaric and Duncan
[19:21] <KK> It helps to remember that Rob was a keen genealogist, so felt compelled to fill in as many blanks as possible.
[19:21] <Laurna> Sophonisba's name was changed to Grania Marie Araxella  in the time line And I prefer that name for Alaric's second daughter
[19:21] <Derynifank> me too
[19:22] <@Evie> Yes, that's pretty
[19:22] <Rillan> Sorry, you've had such a terrible year. I hope it's getting better or does so soon.
[19:22] <Laurna> Some day I would love to share the ancistory charts I made up.
[19:22] <Derynifank> i think Grania
[19:22] <Derynifank> was a lovely name

[19:22] <jerusha> Sophronisba sounds Torenthi
[19:23] <@Evie> Or Byzantine
[19:23] <Laurna> Agreed
[19:23] <@Evie> Since I think it is of Greek origin
[19:24] <@Evie> ANd I noticed the names for the Byzantyun royalty in the Codex seem Greek inspired
[19:24] <Laurna> They would be.
[19:24] <@Evie> Sophie's full name is Sophronia, but she hates it.
[19:25] <Derynifank> Sophronisba was a Carthaginian noblewoman
[19:25] <Shiral> I find Grania a MUCH nicer name than Sophonisba
[19:25] <KK> Laurna, I seem to recall that there was an attempt to get those to me, some years back, but for some reason, the charts fell through the cracks.  In the meantime, the program that I used to create my own charts is antiquated, and I don't think it made it through the last migration from old computer to new.  I'll have to do some sleuthing later on.  I know the files are still there; I just can't open them.  And they were clunky even then.
[19:26] <Bee> I'm not sure if Rorentha culrute is more Greek- or Russian-inspired.
[19:26] <Laurna> KK, after you have moved and setlled in to your new diggs. I can send you my whole ancistory file.  It may not be complete or correct but I did my best disciffering the codex..  I can mail it to you or email it,.
[19:26] <Bee> Torenthii\
[19:27] <@Evie> The names seem to have Greek, Russian, German, and Hungarian influences, perhaps depending on region?

[19:28] <KK> Thanks, Laurna.  I make progress every day, but it's slow. I did succeed in getting the front hedge trimmed this weekend, and also about half the sticks in the yard from the past winter's storms.  and The front yard got mowed, too.  Not by me, of course,  I just wrote the checks.  ;-)

[19:30] <KK> The kid who's deealing with the sticks and branches is from the local high school, taking Latin and saving up for a class trip to Italy next year.  Very nice kid, recommended on a website for the local neighborhood that I've just discovered.  GOod connections already.

[19:31] <Laurna> nice. Perhaps you could help him with a few latin phrases.
[19:32] <KK> Haven't started looking yet, Bee.  Have to at least get this house on the market first.  But I got about 8 boxes to the shredder yesterday, and about 8 bags of clothes.  And books upstairs are mostly sorted into keep and discard piles..
[19:33] <Bee> I don't envy you the task, KK.
[19:33] <KK> He's finishing his second year of Latin; I was amazed and delighted that Latin is still offered in at least some high schools.
[19:33] <jerusha> Yeah, I have a lot of that stuff going on  right now, too

[19:35] <jerusha> Own pace is out by 30 May
[19:35] <Bee> I won a medal for Latin in high school.
[19:36] <Laurna> that is a good time line
[19:36] <Rillan> If you're not going to pursue a career that requires Latin then it's good for the SATs and for learning other Romance languages
[19:36] <Derynifank> But his HS considered it a foreign language. Filled that requirement
[19:36] <Rillan> In my high school everyone had to take 3 years of Latin and 2 years of French
[19:37] <@Evie> Well, given there were no native Latin speakers in the US, they're not wrong.... ;-)
[19:37] <KK> Where was that, Rillian?
[19:37] <Bee> I understand Italian is very close to latin.
[19:37] <Rillan> A Catholic seminary high school in Queens New York called Cathedral Prep.
[19:38] <Shiral> Italian is the child of Latin
[19:38] <@Evie> Fairly close, but still pretty different
[19:38] <Bee> How long ago?
[19:38] <Derynifank> Not saying Latin isn't useful, just don't see it as filling a foreign language requirement
[19:38] <KK> Are you still in New York, or have you moved on?
[19:38] <@Evie> What else would you categorize it as, though? It's not a local language.
[19:39] <Rillan> I moved from New York to Alberta Canada

[19:39] <Rillan> Bee - was the question of "how long ago" to me?
[19:39] <jerusha> Welcome to Canada, Rillan!

[19:39] <Rillan> Thanks Jerusha
[19:40] <Rillan> I graduated high school in 1989

[19:41] <~bynw> yes canada is on the otherside of the icewall
[19:41] <Rillan> My wife grew up in Red Deer, she spend a year with me in NYC before we got married and she hated it.
[19:41] <Rillan> *spent
[19:42] <Bee> ah.  Have Catholic schools kept Latin longer than secular schools?
[19:42] »» <jerusha> nods at Bynw in agreement
[19:42] <KK> Where is Red Deer near--that we Americans would know?
[19:43] <@Evie> My kids went to a regular public school, but they offered Latin. It's not the norm anymore for public schools, though, I don't think, unless they're very well funded.
[19:43] <Laurna> Sounds like a good woman to pull you out of the city. Kudo's to her
[19:43] <Derynifank> My grandson is in a public high school in the IB program and they offered it
[19:44] <Bee> IB?
[19:44] <Rillan> There's a Catholic school that I almost took a job at in Long Island, NY called Kellenberg, at one point they completely did away with all their foreign languages and started teach only Latin.
[19:44] <Derynifank> international baccLAUREATE
[19:44] <Bee> ah, ok
[19:44] <Derynifank> oops, keep hitting caps lock
[19:45] <Bee> That happens to me  too, DFK.
[19:45] <Rillan> Their reasoning was that no one was graduating with the ability to speak any of the living languages that they taught so they switched to Latin to give their students the edge on the SATs
[19:45] <Rillan> Red Deed is exacltly mid way between Calgary and Edmonton
[19:46] <Laurna> In Latin studies. do they speak it as well. Since it is said to be an unspoken language. If they speak it than it is no longer unspoken.
[19:46] <@Evie> It took me something like 3 years of French before I managed to get through basic conversational French, and even then, I could read and understand written French much more easily than spoken.

[19:47] <Jemler> ok, bynw.

[19:47] <Jemler> does Quenya count?
[19:48] <@Evie> *didn't start learning Spanish until he was over 50, and he is fluent in it now.
[19:48] <Laurna> Four years of spanish and a year visiting central amarica and I only got to understand a little bit of it.
[19:48] <@Evie> But he also has extensive experience speaking with people for whom Spanish is a first language
[19:48] <jerusha> I have no ear for foreign languages
[19:48] <Bee> Living in a country where the language is spoken also helps.
[19:48] <Laurna> Same here Jerusha
[19:49] <@Evie> You gain fluency from being immersed in the language and having to use it.  Being a child simply helps the learning go more quickly and the pronunciation be more easily acquired
[19:49] <Bee> Yes.
[19:49] <Laurna> Jerusha do you need a little French  in your part of Canada?
[19:49] <Rillan> My father learned Portuguese in his 50's but he was already fluent in Spanish which is his native language.
[19:50] <@Evie> He lived 12 miles from the Mexican border for over 15 years.  So he lived in a country where the language is spoken, so to speak.  :-D
[19:50] <jerusha> There is a lot of French in Ontario, but my skills are very limited
[19:50] <Bee> More French in quebec, I imagine.
[19:50] <Laurna> Any good French resuarants to dine in?
[19:51] <jerusha> Not in North Bay, surprisingly.  But lots of Italian
