DesertRose

[20:14] <DesertRose> Yes, because a lot of people connect to chat from the link on RhemuthCastle.com, which is a Mibbit link.
[20:14] <Bee> okay, I get it--I think.
[20:14] <DesertRose> Or what Evie said.
[20:14] <Alkari> and for non-technical people like me, it is simple
[20:14] <fudgebob> coz mibbit is the easiest way to connect to IRC, being web-based (no installation required)
[20:16] <Evie_> but it's easy enough to download and install something different if Mibbit is giving you fits.  The main things you need to get connected is to write down the server name and the channel name so that you can tell your newly installed program where you want to log on
[20:17] <BalanceTheEnergies> BalnaceTheEnergies is getting a pencil
[20:17] <Evie_> In this case, irc.otherworlders.org is the server and #deryni_destinations is the channell
[20:18] <Elim> Hmm, Evie_ You are doing a good job of explaining IRC
[20:18] <Evie_> all chat programs are a bit different, but all should have a server list that comes up when you first start out, and if otherworlders isn't already on there, there's an option to add it
[20:19] <Evie_> Thanks, Elim. Only because I had to go through all this recently.
[20:19] <Evie_> and because I think like an end user, not like a tech geek.
[20:19] <Alkari> I might try it when I have a few hours to spare
[20:19] <BalanceTheEnergies> Good, thanks. I'll explore other options. i'm tirred of the glitched.
[20:19] <jemler> Evie, i resemble that remark!
[20:19] <Evie_> end user or tech geek, jemler?
[20:19] <Alkari> LOL.  I wish instruction manuals for many things were written by end users and not geeks
[20:19] <jemler> Tech Geek!
[20:20] * Bee has quit IRC (Quit: )
[20:20] <Alkari> uh oh
[20:20] <Evie_> that's what the "x for dummies" and "x for idiots" series of books are for.  I love those.
[20:20] <Alkari> Me too.
[20:21] <Kelric> I used to use mirc.  but when I got this laptop from my dad I replaced it with icechat.  I like this much better
[20:21] <Alkari> But they don't write "X for dummies" when they give you printer insturctions, for example.
[20:21] <Evie_> Now I just need to find "The Eleven Kingdoms for Dummies" and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Map Reading in Gwynedd"
[20:21] <DesertRose> LOL
[20:21] <Alkari> I got a nice new printer, but the instructions were woeful, especially on connecting it to a home network
[20:21] <Alkari> LOL @ new Deryni books
[20:22] <jemler> Are you going to write them, Evie?
[20:22] <BalanceTheEnergies> They should. I've written or re-written training manuals for two different jobs, so I speak from experience.
[20:22] <Kelric> heh.  Deryni for Dummies
[20:22] <Evie_> In my last chapter, someone could have used "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Dabbling with Dark Magic."  It's a one-page manual that simply says "Don't".
[20:23] <Alkari> We could add our own versions of them to Wikipedia
[20:23] <DesertRose> Srsly.
[20:23] <Alkari> Back in about 10 mins ....
[20:23] <Evie_> You're cooking dinner with KK, Alkari?
[20:24] * the_Bee has joined #deryni_Destinations
[20:24] <BalanceTheEnergies> I confess I've edited a Wikipedia entry already. I didn't think enough weight was given to the altar dedication in KKB.
[20:24] <DesertRose> There's Bee again.
[20:24] <Evie_> wb Bee
[20:24] <BalanceTheEnergies> hello Bee
[20:24] <Evie_> You've been bzzzy
[20:25] <jemler> where is that entry, BTE?
[20:25] <the_Bee> Hi all.  I hit "enter" and wound up on a page that told me my nickname was already in use.  I had to reboot.
[20:26] <KK> I'm back.  There was Some Assembly Required.  But not batteries.
[20:26] <Evie_> a Deryni wiki would be cool.  I've seen one done for a Second Life steampunk city I belonged to, and it was well done.  Lots of stuff could be added to a wiki.
[20:26] <DesertRose> WB, KK
[20:26] <Evie_> the main drawback is having to learn the speciall coding for it
[20:26] <the_Bee> rehi KK
[20:26] <Evie_> I'm glad no batteries were required in your food,KK
[20:26] <Evie_> I'd worry about your culinary skills if they were
[20:26] <BalanceTheEnergies> Hello again KK.
[20:26] <the_Bee> battery acid spoils the taste.
[20:27] <DesertRose> lol
[20:27] <Evie_> yes.  citric and acetic acid, good.  Battery acid, bad.
[20:27] <BalanceTheEnergies> An likely gives the diners killer heartburn
[20:27] <Evie_> granted, the last batch of sekanjabin I tried to make tasted like battery acid. Note to self: use a different vinegar next time
[20:28] <DesertRose> LOL
[20:28] <the_Bee> and stomachburn.
[20:28] <KK> OK, I'll bite.  What is sekanjabin?
[20:29] <Evie_> it's a medieval drink, KK
[20:29] <Evie_> think "medieval gatorade"
[20:29] <Evie_> comes from Persia originally, I think
[20:29] * BalanceTheEnergies has quit IRC (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
[20:30] <Evie_> there are several recipes available online, and I posted one to the forum...I think in the SCA thread
[20:30] <DesertRose> That sounds like a likely place for it.
[20:30] * BalanceTheEnergies has joined #deryni_Destinations
[20:30] <the_Bee> wb
[20:31] <BalanceTheEnergies> Thanks Bee. This is getting annoying.
[20:31] <BalanceTheEnergies> Did I miss much?
[20:31] <jemler> it's like you're stuck in a revolving transfer portal
[20:31] <Evie_> not really, unless you want to know  about medieval gatorade
[20:31] <the_Bee> My browser warned me that MIRC was a spyware hazard.
[20:31] <DesertRose> Evie, you talked about it but you didn't actually post a recipe for it.
[20:32] <DesertRose> I just went and looked.
[20:32] <Evie_> I didn't?
[20:32] <Evie_> well, there are several online
[20:32] <BalanceTheEnergies> "Medieval gatorade"? Sounds interesting....
[20:32] <KK> So, what does it have in it besides vinegar?
[20:32] <Evie_> just do a google search for "sekanjabin"
[20:32] <DesertRose> Nope, you said that Duke Cariadoc of the Bow has a good one, but you didn't actually post one.
[20:32] <Evie_> hang on...let me find a sample recipe
[20:33] <jemler> take one jar of Tang, mis in two cans of Jolt, and serve
[20:33] <Evie_> http://www.food.com/recipe/sekanjabin-126517
[20:33] <Evie_> I can't vouch for this one; it's just the first I happened upon
[20:34] <Evie_> they'll all have water, vinegar, and sugar, and most have mint. Some have lemon or other fruit flavors
[20:34] <BalanceTheEnergies> Hmm...I have chums who go to renfaires...they might like this sort of thing.
[20:34] <Evie_> white or red wine vinegar is recommended
[20:34] <KK> It ways it's a sweet and sour drink.
[20:34] <Evie_> Do NOT use distilled white vinegar; it's too strong
[20:34] <DesertRose> http://www.pbm.com/~lindahl/cariadoc/drinks.html
[20:34] <DesertRose> Second one down is Duke Cariadoc's recipe, I think.
[20:34] <Alkari> Back again.
[20:35] <DesertRose> WB, Alkari.
[20:35] <Evie_> I've also used balsamic raspberry vinegar, but if you use that, I'd recommend adding more water, since the cooking process doesn't reduce the vinegar enough to bring out the sweetness
[20:35] <the_Bee> DR, I've just been warned not to open your link.
[20:35] <BalanceTheEnergies> Hello Alkari.
[20:35] <Alkari> Healthy lunch, no battery acid
[20:35] <DesertRose> Hmm.  I don't know why.
[20:36] <the_Bee> Probably my browser doesn't recognize it.
[20:36] <Evie_> I didn't get a warning and mine is usually pretty vigilant
[20:36] <Evie_> Dissolve 4 cups sugar in 2 1/2 cups of water; when it comes to a boil add 1 cup wine vinegar. Simmer 1/2 hour. Add a handful of mint, remove from fire, let cool. Dilute the resulting syrup to taste with ice water (5 to 10 parts water to 1 part syrup). The syrup stores without refrigeration.
[20:36] <Evie_> There's the recipe from that page, though
[20:36] <DesertRose> That's it.
[20:37] <Evie_> I think the Meridies version I'm most used to also has a bit of lemon added
[20:37] <DesertRose> Yeah, you can tinker with the recipe quite a bit.
[20:37] <Evie_> but not enough to make it like a lemonade
[20:37] * Alkari has quit IRC (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
[20:37] <DesertRose> I'm used to it having a bit of lemon in it too.
[20:37] <Evie_> I've also added ginger
[20:37] <Kelric> on a side note,  my mom FINALLY got a better ereader than she used to have
[20:37] <Evie_> or rosewater, just a tad
[20:38] <Evie_> which did she end up getting?
[20:38] * Alkari has joined #deryni_Destinations
[20:38] <the_Bee> rehi alkari.
[20:38] <Alkari> re hi.
[20:38] <Alkari> those other chat options are sounding promising
[20:38] <DesertRose> WB, Alkari.
[20:39] <Evie_> it's like Mibbit is catapulting people around and we just watch y'all fly through the air and land every which way.
[20:39] <the_Bee> Honey seems like a nicer ingredient than vinegar.
[20:39] <Kelric> our local borders that's about 5 minutes from home is one of the ones that's closing so when their Kobos ended up going to $80 pre tax she got one.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:39:22] <Evie_> It ends up being a bit sweet-tart, Bee, like lemonade
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:39:33] <Evie_> it's not as sour as you'd think
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:39:50] <Evie_> given that it's got enough sugar in it to be stored on the shelf without refrigeration
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:40:04] <the_Bee> I'm mostly interested in white vinegar as a cleaning agent.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:40:05] <BalanceTheEnergies> Sometimes, Kelric, it's nice to be a bit of a vulture and save some money that way.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:40:07] <Evie_> it's basically a flavored syrup you add to water to dilute it to drinking concentration
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:40:10] <Alkari> LOL Meaning it ferments nicely
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:40:46] <Evie_> you don't use regular white vinegar or it's undrinkable. White wine vinegar is used
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:41:05] <the_Bee> ?I thought they were the same thing.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:41:27] <Evie_> no. Distilled white vinegar is the one you get by the gallon that's often used for cleaning purposes as well as some cooking
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:41:30] <DesertRose> No, white vinegar is distilled from grain.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:41:48] <DesertRose> Wine vinegar is basically wine that's been allowed to turn to vinegar.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:41:50] <Evie_> white wine vinegar is over with the red wine vinegar, balsamic vinegar, etc
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:41:53] <the_Bee> ah. I'll check what mine is.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:42:13] <DesertRose> And wine will turn to vinegar in the right (or wrong) storage conditions.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:42:40] <Evie_> if you boil sekanjabin syrup using white distilled vinegar, I predict you'll run everyone out of the neighborhood with the fumes. ;)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:42:41] <Alkari> LOL. Hopefully you drink it before it reaches that stage, DR
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:42:54] <KK> Oh, yes, I'm sure we've all made wine vinegar in that manner. :-(
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:42:57] <DesertRose> I do, generally. :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:43:29] <Evie_> so if we have a Deryni get-together, we have a sekanjabin tasting, yes? ;)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:43:32] <Alkari> I make sure mine gets drunk before it dgenerates :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:43:41] <DesertRose> Especially that Pacific Rim Riesling I like so much. :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:43:51] <Alkari> LOL.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:43:55] <the_Bee> Marriage is like wine. Well tended, it improves with age. Poorly tended, it turns to vinegar.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:43:59] <Evie_> the knights will appreciate having it at fighter practices, trust me
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:07] <Kelric> at least the kobo uses the epub format not that old out of date .imp format that the old gemstar/ebookwise 1150s used.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:09] <Evie_> it's not called "medieval Gatorade" for nothing
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:20] Quit BalanceTheEnergies has left this server (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:20] <Alkari> I have to check a couple of my aged reislings, and some of the reds are getting very drinkable now
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:40] <jemler> there he goes again!
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:40] <Evie_> I've not heard of the kobo, Kelric. I'll have to look into that one
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:42] <DesertRose> Mmmm. That sounds yummy. If I lived nearby, Alkari, I'd come help you drink them. :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:44] Join BalanceTheEnergies has joined this channel (Mibbit@OWIRCN-f42bda4c.pools.spcsdns.net).
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:57] <the_Bee> Hello AGAIN!
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:44:59] <DesertRose> And of course, I'd bring something suitable to nosh with the wines. :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:02] <jemler> wb bte
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:07] <Evie_> You could meet each other halfway, DR. I'll send a life raft
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:12] * Alkari wonders when DR can come to Oz ....:(
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:13] <DesertRose> Poor BTE. Mibbit just will not let you stay put.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:13] <BalanceTheEnergies> Hello again.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:20] <Alkari> or when she can get to the USA :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:27] <DesertRose> :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:43] <Evie_> I keep visualizing you poor Mibbitians being tossed around via that catapult. It's very Pythonesque. :D
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:45] <DesertRose> I'd have to sail around South America to get there in a life raft.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:45:58] <BalanceTheEnergies> No, and I don't recall having this trouble before. Bloody hell it's frustrating.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:01] * Alkari plots future travel plans ...
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:01] <DesertRose> And I don't think I'm that good a sailor.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:14] <jemler> you know they have a canal in panama, now?\
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:17] <Alkari> FLy to Hawaii and we can meet up :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:22] <DesertRose> There's a thought. :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:28] <Evie_> well, no, we build a TP on the raft and...no, that won't work...we build it on a flagstone and put THAT on a raft, and...hmmmm OK, not.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:41] <DesertRose> Darn.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:43] <KK> lol
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:45] <Alkari> I wouldn't mind seeing the Hawaiian islands
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:47] <BalanceTheEnergies> Don't forget your inflight exercises to avoid blodd clots!
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:46:50] <DesertRose> I wouldn't either.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:47:05] <Alkari> No, and I have my special stockings too
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:47:09] <Evie_> and then Alkari will kvetch at me for creating yet another TP when they're meant to be rare. ;)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:47:19] <Alkari> LOL
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:47:22] <jemler> you could have a fire lizard take you between!
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:47:26] <Alkari> Hawaii not in Gwynedd :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:47:32] <DesertRose> I didn't know anybody else in the world used kvetch as a verb. :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:47:51] <Evie_> I'm talented. I'm an equal opportunity word user/abuser
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:47:55] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:47:55] <BalanceTheEnergies> I thought it was very Yiddish/NYC
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:48:03] <Alkari> Hmm - probably are fire lizards on Hawaii, jemler
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:48:06] <jemler> in ohio we say "bitch" :) (Sorry, just an example)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:48:23] <DesertRose> I'm a very WASPy southerner but I've managed to pick up a lot of Yiddish from friends.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:48:38] <Evie_> It's OK, jemler, KK used it on page 37 of The Harrowing of Gwynedd. Yes, I checked. *winks at DR*
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:48:41] <KK> Kvetch is definitely yiddish. It was common in Miami, where I grew up.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:48:56] <the_Bee> Dr, what city are you in?
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:48:58] <DesertRose> Yup, she did, out of Javan's mouth referring to one of the regents' wives.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:49:03] <DesertRose> Jacksonville, Florida.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:49:36] <jemler> WASP? Wise And Sexy Person? ;)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:49:38] <Alkari> You mean, I have to come to Florida?!!
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:49:40] <Alkari> Hmmm ....
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:49:55] <DesertRose> White Anglo Saxon Protestant.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:50:00] <Evie_> May I suggest not going to FL in August, Alkari? ;)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:50:14] <Evie_> I thought you were White Anglo Saxon Pagan? :D
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:50:19] <Alkari> I don;'t go anywhere in the USA in August!!!
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:50:22] <DesertRose> Yeah, not in August. April is a good month here.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:50:31] <DesertRose> Well, I am pagan, but I grew up Protestant. :)
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:50:54] <Evie_> I was going to say your P is very versatile, but jemler would have a field day with that
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:50:55] <jemler> you pretested being a pagan?
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:50:59] <Evie_> So I won't. :D
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:51:02] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:51:24] <BalanceTheEnergies> I know the feeling. I'm agnostic freethinker, but was raised Catholic. Hey, they tried.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:51:29] * Evie_ whistles and looks innocent
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:51:33] <DesertRose> I don't protest much these days, except political stuff into which I will not get here.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:52:00] <KK> Good idea.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:52:02] <Alkari> They tried with me too DR- Methodists and Presbyterians
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:52:08] <Evie_> I protest Regents and the Custodes Fidei
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:52:12] <Alkari> And the odd Anglican.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:52:18] <DesertRose> Yeah, I grew up Methodist, myself, but went to a Baptist school.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:52:20] <KK> Yike, my timer is ringing. Gotta go.
[Sunday 06 March 2011] [20:52:25] Quit KK has left this server (Quit: ).
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
