Title: Deryni/Lord Darcy crossovers?
Post by: whitelaughter on July 09, 2016, 07:49:26 PM
Does anyone know if any cross over stories have been written that assume that the Lord Darcy novels are set in the future of the Deryni novels? Given the overlap in concepts, I would be interested in reading.

I'd never heard of that series, but after doing an Amazon search and reading the free sample of the first book, I find myself quite intrigued!  If only I weren't cash poor at the moment, I'd definitely consider buying them. I'll have to check if my local library has them in circulation.

Yes, they are a good read; there's also a novel written after Randall died set in the Americas that is written by Micheal Kurland - it has its' moments, but is quite inferior to Randall's stories.

The play between church and magic is one that should appeal to readers of the Deryni stories; frex there's a delightful bit where a priest has stumbled apon a murder and promptly blessed himself, and the investigators are worried that the priest may have inadvertently cleansed the scene - which would destroy the evidence they need to find the killer. The distinction between clergy, healer and magician is well thought out.

I am told that the inspiration was when he was at a writer's conference and a speaker was talking about the sort of detective story where they got heavily into the forensic science; the speaker said that for all a layman knew they might as well be doing their detecting with magic spells.  That got him thinking.

Most of the stories are based to a greater or lesser extent on well-known detective stories.  Lord Darcy is sort of a cross between Lord Peter Wimsey & Sherlock Holmes; in one story though, he disguises himself as a priest under the name of 'Fr. Armand Braun' and in another story there is an incompetent French detective caled Insp. Cougair.
