Did Camber have a castel or something a kin to a mannor house?

john

Camber's main home was Tor Caerorrie (sp).  this was near Valoret, so that he was near his children.
As Earl of Culdi he had a castle  called Cor Culdi.  Camber's son Cathan had a home in Valoret called Tal Traeth.

Please excuse spelling I do not have the books in front of me

The principal seat of the Earls of Culdi was the fortress Cor Culdi, near the walled city of Culdi in the west of Gwynedd (a region conquered from Cassan by Festil I.

The first Earl of Culdi's brother Angus was created Baron of Caerrorie at around the same time, with a barony in the northern Lendour mountains, with his residence at the manor house Tor Caerrorie. As the first Earl (Ballard) died without any living children Angus inherited the earldom of Culdi as well.

While Cor Culdi was the seat of the Earl's power, Camber preferred Tor Caerrorie since it was more convenient to Valoret (where his duties to Festil III and Blaine required him to be, much of the time).

I had just finished reading Catalyst, and it left me with the feeling that it was more a Manner house do to the intimate feel rather than one of the castles.  I am in serious need of a reread.

In the novel Camber of Culdi, chapter 12 after the death of Cathan we read-

"After, the folk of the village escorted their beloved lord and his family back the the castle-- for Camber had had his son buried in the village churchyard, close by the people he had loved-- not in the vaults beneath the keep."
"The king's soldiers displayed an unexpected sympathy throughout. ....their lieutenant requesting-- and receiving-- permission from Camber himself to camp that night in the castle yard."

Later when it rains the soldiers are moved into the main hall, and thus follows the confrontation on the stone stairs that lead to the residence on the second floor.  I even remember the mention of Camber's tower room, but I can not find it to quote the novel.

I hope this answers your question. Rereading Camber of Culdi, is always a pleasure.

A small detail just came to me. The portal at Tor Caerrorie is on the second floor and not grounded on earthly-soil.
May your horses have wings and fly!

Yes, and thanks to all

According to King Javan's year when the portal near to the royal library in Rhemuth Castle is constructed, ( also not at ground level ) it is sufficient for there to be packed earth in the space between the ceiling of the lower floor and the floor of the portal.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
