[18:10]<jemler> kk
[18:10]<the_Bee> Hi KK!
[18:10]<kirienne> I haven't had a chance to read the transcript yet
[18:11]<kirienne> Hi Katherine
[18:11]<the_Bee> Well, she's obviously here today.
[18:11]<KK> Whew, thought I wasn't going to get in tonight.  Bynw, I still haven't heard from thse folks about my registration number.  I paid several years ago.
[18:11]<kirienne> :-)
[18:11]<the_Bee> glad you're here, katherine
[18:12]<KK> Is Bynw among us?
[18:12]<the_Bee> His name is, but....
[18:12]<kirienne> I got an error on page message the first several times I tried to get in here today, that happens a lot to me
[18:12]<KK> Guess he's out.
[18:12]<KK> Well, I sent them an e-mail some weeks ago now, but no one has responded.
[18:13]<KK> Anyway....
[18:13]<kirienne> that's not very nice of them
[18:13]<KK> How is everybody?
[18:13]<the_Bee> KK, I have a question about the symbolism of the four elements:  If Fire purifies, and Water cleanses, what do Earth and Air do?
[18:14]<kirienne> I'm fine, how are you KK?  The heat was horrid here yestrday, 104 daytime and 97 still at 10PM at night, I'm in Sacramento, California
[18:14]<jemler> chilly (and making Temprus jealous) ;)
[18:14]<the_Bee> mild weather here.  I was in Vermon with family last weekend.
[18:14]<KK> 104 in Sacramento?  Yikes!  That's where my sister lives, too.
[18:14]<the_Bee> Vermont
[18:15]* jojo (Mibbit@ED3168.3AAE3F.8279BF.9F9526) has joined #deryni_destinations
[18:15]<KK> It's mild here in Staunton.  We've not really had the usual really hot weather this summer.
[18:15]<the_Bee> Howdy, jojo!
[18:15]<kirienne> yes, I was outside at an SCA demo, that of course no non SCA folk came to in that heat, LOL
[18:15]<jojo> Howdy all!
[18:15]<kirienne> Hi jojo
[18:15]<jemler> ho jojo
[18:16]<kirienne> we are in 80's today I think
[18:16]<jojo> It's hot in Houstn
[18:16]<jemler> trade you, it's 59 here!
[18:16]<KK> Bee, often two elements are combined.  For example, incense (which is fire and air) purifies.  And holy water (water and salt, which is earth) cleanses.
[18:16]<jojo> I'm setting up a training room and they keep the ac at 85 on the weekends.
[18:16]<KK> Jemler, where <are> you?
[18:16]<jemler> East Liverpool, Ohio, right on the state line with Pa/WV
[18:17]<the_Bee> ah, thanks, KK
[18:17]<KK> And it's 59 at 7 PM?  Wow.
[18:17]<jemler> it's been chilly all day here. We actually had chili for dinner.
[18:17]<jojo> And 95 here... send it down, PLEASE!!!
[18:17]<the_Bee> and hot tamale?
[18:18]<KK> Well, we've had intermittent rain the past week, which keeps the temperature down.
[18:18]<kirienne> I wish we'd get some rain
[18:18]<jemler> nope, just chilii with meat and beans
[18:18]<the_Bee> any hurricanes in your neighborhood, KK?
[18:18]<jemler> and only 2 i's
[18:18]<KK> Nope.
[18:19]<the_Bee> Danny gave us rain yesterday.
[18:19]<KK> I understand we do occasionally get trailing rain when one passes up from the gulf, but we've had nothing serious here.
[18:19]<kirienne> that's good
[18:19]<jojo> I just tried a luscious candy treat that I thought of y'all... celebrating our lack of named storms around here
[18:20]<KK> We're fairly far inland, and we're nestled between two mountain ranges, that would tend to break up storms of they got this far.
[18:20]<jojo> It is a German confection of dark chocolate surrounding marzipan..
[18:20]<KK> Sounds a lot like Mozart balls.
[18:20]<jemler> poor Mozart :)
[18:20]<KK> Actually, that's Austrian.
[18:20]<jojo> Made by Ritter Sport??? got at Walgreens.
[18:21]<KK> It sounds like the same principle.
[18:21]<jojo> WHich made me wonder, again, about chocolate in the eleven kingdomes.
[18:21]<kirienne> sounds yummy
[18:21]<jojo> it was!
[18:21]<the_Bee> Isn't that of New World origin?
[18:21]<jojo> yes...
[18:22]<KK> Isn't chocolate a South American import?
[18:22]<jemler> yes it was, just like corn, potato, tomato, squash
[18:22]<jojo> Yes.. and central.
[18:22]<the_Bee> so Gwynnedd wouldn't have it.
[18:22]<KK> Alas, no.
[18:23]<the_Bee> Unless some adventurous trader crossed the Atalantic...
[18:23]<jemler> they might have had baklava
[18:23]<KK> And where do almonds grow?
[18:23]<KK> Baklava is a possibility.
[18:23]<jojo> Mediterranean, and California (but not native to cal.)
[18:24]<KK> Did anyone else see the article thiis pat week about the possibility that the first English voyage to the new world might have happened as early as 1494, I think it was?
[18:24]<the_Bee> Aren't some kinds of baklava made with pistacchios?
[18:24]<KK> I was pretty sure almonds were available in Europe.
[18:25]<kirienne> wow, I missed that article, sounds interesting
[18:25]<KK> And where do <they> grow?
[18:25]<jojo> wow!  I knew Irish monks were thought to have crossed around the time of the Vikings?
[18:26]<jemler> i've heard that baklava was made with pistachios, walnuts, and almonds.
[18:27]<KK> OK, pistachios come from Iran, Syria, Turkey, and Afghanistan--so there could have been pistachios in Gwynedd.
[18:27]<jemler> has anyone read a book called "Lies my teacher told me" ?
[18:27]<KK> Usually walnuts, these days, I think.
[18:28]<KK> I've heard of it.
[18:28]<kirienne> I've not read that book
[18:28]<jemler> +
[18:28]<kirienne> nor heard of it
[18:28]<jojo> Baklava also has lots of honey.
[18:29]<the_Bee> that's what makes it yummy
[18:29]<KK> Yes, and filo pastry.
[18:29]<kirienne> yummy & sticky :-)
[18:29]<the_Bee> You guys are making me hungry!
[18:30]<kirienne> LOL
[18:30]<jojo> Any juicy tidbits on Alaric's adventure?
[18:30]<jojo> or did I miss it?
[18:30]<KK> He's tried out his truth-reading talent that Se kick-started for him.  And he and Duncan saw angels when Duke Andrew died.
[18:31]<jojo> :)
[18:31]<kirienne> cool
[18:31]<the_Bee> Are you hoping the book will be out by darkover?  or Christmas?
[18:32]<KK> No way, on either count!  If I'm lucky, it will be <finished> by Darkover--which means release by this time next year.
[18:33]<kirienne> LOL
[18:33]<the_Bee> ah.
[18:35]* kirienne will do her best to wait patiently for it.
[18:37]<kirienne> :-)
[18:38]<the_Bee> Will the book clarify the relationships of the MacLeans, the Morgans and the Mearan Royal family?  I've nver been sure wheter Kenneth's grandmother was Jared's sister or Andrew's.
[18:38]<the_Bee> or was it kenneth's mother?
[18:41]<KK> Kenneth's mother was Andrew's sister.
[18:41]<the_Bee> thanks. And andrew's other sister married Annalind of Meara.
[18:43]<the_Bee> ?
[18:43]<KK> Nope.  Annalind married Rhiryd Kincaid.
[18:44]<the_Bee> I don't have The Bishop's Heir handy.  I'll have to check itout.
[18:45]<kirienne> I just r\finished re reading that, but didn't keep all the relationships straight in my mind
[18:45]<KK> They're convoluted family trees.
[18:48]<kirienne> yes, I started taking notes at one point to get it all straight in my mind, but can't fine my notes :-)
[18:49]<KK> I lost some of my notes for literally <years>, but finally found them when we were packing up to move--thank God!
[18:50]<kirienne> I am starting to read DAthe zine # 20 now too, wonderful stories in there as usual , hopefully I'll get a short poece written sometime
[18:50]<jojo> I have been looking for my extra car keys, and just found them in the bottom of my computer case... where they must have been for 6 months?
[18:50]<jojo> Good luck Kirienne!
[18:50]<kirienne> ty
[18:51]<kirienne> Ive started several times, but never liked what I'd written when I finished
[18:51]<KK> Well done, Jojo!
[18:51]<KK> BTW, did you know that pistachio trees come in male and female?  Wiki is wonderful!
[18:52]<the_Bee> I read that a few minutes ago.
[18:52]<kirienne> I had no idea, yes Wiki is full of great information
[18:52]<kirienne> I browse there for lots of stuff
[18:52]<the_Bee> Almonds are bisexual.
[18:52]<jojo> Most fruit and nut trees do, I think.  Wiki Rocks.
[18:53]<KK> It also implies that pistachio is the main nut used in baklava.  So now we know.
[18:53]* jemler turns down the volume on his thinking. ;)
[18:53]<kirienne> LOL
[18:54]<jojo> If you come to Houston, most of the baklava has pecans... luscious.. so I guess they use what is available.
[18:55]<the_Bee> sounds good to me
[18:55]<Temprus> jemler, keep it down! I can't hear myself think over all that thinking you are doing over there!
[18:55]<kirienne> it is yummmy stuff, no matter what nuts are in it
[18:55]<jojo> Temprus awoke!
[18:55]<jemler> what is in pralimes?
[18:55]<KK> It would make sense that one uses the local nuts.
[18:55]<the_Bee> pecans?
[18:57]<jojo> Yes, lots of native and commercial pecans here.  I think Gwynned could have dried dates and figs?
[18:57]<the_Bee> or raisins
[18:57]<KK> If not from Gwynedd, then definitely imported from farther east.
[18:58]<jojo> Too cold for figs in Gwynedd, but not Houston.
[18:58]<the_Bee> what about oranges and lemons and limes?
[18:58]<kirienne> LOL
[18:58]<jemler> you figure at least from R'Kassi
[18:59]<jojo> They would have to be dried or come in by portal.
[18:59]<jemler> i can't picture portals being used for trade relations
[18:59]<jojo> I don't remember much commerce through portals.. just wondered.
[18:59]<kirienne> LOL, neither can I
[18:59]<jemler> how would you pay import duties, taxes, etc?
[19:00]<KK> I suppose one <could> Portal in luxury foodstuffs, at least in Torenth.
[19:00]<the_Bee> and it would have to be a pretty big portal, to bring in large amounts.
[19:00]<KK> Tariff's would be hard to enforce, though.
[19:01]<jojo> too big an energy drain for much more that a basket or bushel...
[19:01]<jemler> triports were mentioned in Codex, but i still can't imagine portals being used for trade.
[19:02]<jojo> Perhaps for the occasional gift from some far off relation?
[19:03]<KK> Triports?
[19:04]<KK> Personal gifts via Portal, perhaps--what one could carry.
[19:06]<kirienne> I don't recall seeing triports  in codex, but it's been some time since I've looked thru it
[19:07]<KK> Might that be a Star Trekism that somehow crept in?  Or a Robism?  I don't remember it.
[19:08]<kirienne> could be
[19:09]<jemler> according to codex 2 - "large triports designed to facilitate the transport of many men and other materiel"
[19:09]<jemler> page 201 of codex 2
[19:11]<+Elim> mmm hoecakes.
[19:12]<kirienne> what's a hoecake?
[19:13]<+Elim> It is a quick bread like a pancake, except that it has cornmeal also, and was traditionally cooked over a fire on a hoe blade.
[19:13]<the_Bee> I like cornmeal pancakes
[19:13]<+Elim> There is wheat flour in there also.
[19:14]<jemler> corn bread and butter
[19:14]<KK> Whew, definitely a Robism that slipped past me.  If those ever exited, it must have been far in the past, and the technology has been lost.  It isn't something that I would have come up with, as it's too much of a deus in the machina.
[19:14]<jemler> you talkin bout the triport, kk?
[19:14]<the_Bee> Robism?  as in Rob Reginald?
[19:15]<KK> Yes and yes.
[19:15]<+Elim> Who?
[19:15]<jemler> looks like i caught everyone by surprise with that one! :)
[19:15]<kirienne> Yep, you did :-)
[19:15]<the_Bee> co-author of Codes Derynianus
[19:15]<jemler> the guy who co-wrote Codex with her
[19:16]<the_Bee> Codwex
[19:16]<+Elim> Ah.
[19:16]<KK> Rob Reginald, who compiled and expanded on my notes.  For the most part, he did a brilliant job, but occasionally a pixie sense of humor would creep in.
[19:16]<jemler> keep rtuing bee :)
[19:16]<jemler> like Lake Pericomo in Rum?
[19:16]<the_Bee> AKA "Brother Theo"
[19:16]<KK> He loves groaner puns.
[19:16]<the_Bee> and the agui ducks
[19:17]<jemler> quack quack!
[19:17]<KK> Some of them are quite clever.
[19:17]<jemler> like Coquus Boiardius
[19:19]<KK> The Forcinn Buffer States got a partiularly large share of whimsy.
[19:20]* Temprus has quit (Quit: None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with you. You're locked up in here with me. -Rorschach)
[19:20]<jojo> I hate to leave this clever conversation, but I must. Training room is as ready as it's going to get with no gaffer tape; and I need t be here in about 12 hrs.
[19:20]<jojo> Y'all have a creative and productive week!
[19:21]<kirienne> night jojo, good luck with that
[19:21]<KK> I've also got to be going.  My guys want to eat.
[19:21]<the_Bee> good night, jojo
[19:21]<kirienne> LOL, night night & hugs KK, thanks for coming to visit with us
[19:21]* jojo leaves in a crochet creation of CAT5e cables
[19:21]<jemler> nite jojo
[19:21]<the_Bee> glad you came, KK.  Dragoncon next weekend?
[19:22]<jemler> nite kk
[19:22]* jojo has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
[19:22]<KK> Yes, I'll be at Dragoncon next weekend, so see you in two weeks.
[19:22]<the_Bee> enjoy!
[19:22]<kirienne> have fun at Dragoncon
[19:22]<KK> Unless, of course, any of you are coming to Dragoncon.
[19:22]<kirienne> I wish I was, no $$ to go anyplace
[19:22]<+Elim> Everybody I know that is cool is going there....
[19:23]<jemler> well i'm gonna take off too. until next week folks.
[19:23]<KK> It's always quite a spectacle.
[19:23]<the_Bee> bye jemler
[19:23]<kirienne> by Jemler
[19:23]<kirienne> I hear it's a huge con
[19:23]<+Elim> Even The Amazing Randi will be there.
[19:23]* KK steps onto her Portal, waves good night, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.
[19:23]<KK> Yes, it's ginormous!
[19:23]<KK> I heard that Shatner is making an appearance.
[19:24]<kirienne> wow
[19:24]<+Elim> Carp.
[19:24]<KK> Anyway, ciao!
[19:24]* KK has quit (Quit: )
