Off to bed... I'll see if I can get in another chapter of Bernard Pares' A History of Russia before I nod off. The work has been on my bookshelf for ten years or more and I finally worked my way around to it.

As a writer I need to stay fresh, so I digest tough subject matter from time to time. Bernard Pares was educated in Britain at the end of the 1800's and wrote this history just after the Second World War. Consequently, it is written in a highly literate, fluid and articulate English that is dying out today through the dumbing down and universalization of the language. I truly value the ability to use my native tongue as an art form and I admire those who do it well.

As to the subject matter- I'm studying the Russians for a reason: If you can understand those people, you can understand anything!

Very interesting.

Just think of me as a raven perched above your door:

"Write more, write more!"

(With apologies to Edgar Allan Poe.  ;)"

And Jerusha, never flitting,
Still is sitting, still is sitting
At some quaint and curious keyboard o'erlooking Elec's door.
And her eyes have all the seeming of a fangirl's who is dreaming
Of a swift-appearing fanfic sent to grace this forum's board.
And the voice that echoes softly from that perch above yon door
Pleads with Elec, "Please write more!"

With further apologies to the late Mr. Poe and his creeptastic raven.   ;D

My goodness, Evie, that was awesome!

*Preens a few feathers in appreciation, has a nice ruffling shake, and settles down on her perch to wait for Elec to finish.*  :)

My father gave me "The Collected Works of Edgar Allan Poe" when I was just eight years old.  God only knows what the man was thinking!   :o   ;D

Your Father, or Poe?

Your Dad I can't speak to... Come to think of it, Poe either!

I've always thought of him as a great creative genius chained in a small, dark room...

LOL, sounds like my dad. He was a voracious reader, and constantly gave me books to read...though he wasn't exactly the best judge of what was appropriate for a pre-teen. Heck, he let me watch The Godfather before I was 11. Of course, to him, that was the environment where he grew up. (Tony Accardo was his cousin.)

That works for me, at least if that description is meant to apply to Poe rather than my dad!   ;D

Note to self:  Don't tick off Aerlys' extended family!   ;)

LOL! Shall I make you an offer you can't refuse?  8)

As I was waking up this morning, I realized I should clarify my last post.

None of my immediate family was ever directly involved with "The Family." Rather, my dad grew up in a neighborhood where the mob had a very strong presence. He wasn't a perfect angel, by any means, but, as he told me, when he started watching his friends either going to prison or ending up dead, he knew he wanted to steer clear of that life.

Still, he had an uncle who took the rap for someone else in order to gain the mob's "respect" for our family. And supposedly another relative was drowned in a pickle vat...

My grandmother knew the Giancana's,  Boy, was she yelling at the TV when the miniseries "Mafia Princess" aired! "That's a bunch of lies! She wasn't an only child! She didn't grow up differently from anyone else..."

All I can say is, family gatherings with a bunch of Sicilians were very lively.

Elec, that was fun.
I really thought it was young Theodoric who was traveling through the city. I was surprised to find Albin in the midst of thieves. Now you have two full generations of Michaeline Knights to follow.  Write on.

That's why I called it a Teaser!
