[18:05] * KK (~kkurtz@OWIRCN-49430054.va.comcast.net) has joined #deryni_destinations
[18:05] <UncleDF64> hi kk
[18:05] <jemler> hi kk
[18:05] <Evie> kids cost more than dolls do. :-)
[18:05] <Evie> Hi, KK!
[18:05] <KK> Hi, all.
[18:05] <the_Bee> I'm glad I finished school when it didn't cost a fortune.
[18:06] <the_Bee> Hi KK!
[18:06] <Evie> Oh, they're still in high school.  I dread college.
[18:06] <KK> Scholarships.
[18:07] <Evie> there's still fees, even though I've got prepaid tuition
[18:07] <KK> Though I suspect there's less scholarship money than when I was in school.
[18:07] <UncleDF64> fees never go away
[18:07] <KK> For the fees, there's part-time employment, if one is lucky.  I had work-study.
[18:07] <Evie> we invested in that when they were babies, so unless they go longer than 4 years, at least tuition fees are covered
[18:08] <Evie> yes, there is that
[18:08] <the_Bee> That something to be thankful for.
[18:08] * Shiral (Mibbit@504018.A7BCBA.6044E5.E2E484) has joined #deryni_destinations
[18:08] <KK> Good planning.  And if they should win scholarships, that money can be freed up for other important things.
[18:08] <the_Bee> Hi Shiral!
[18:08] <Shiral> Hello hello
[18:08] <UncleDF64> my brother has many years to worry about college with his 2 1/2 daughter
[18:08] <KK> Hi, Shiral.
[18:08] <Alkari> Hi - sorry, went AFK a while.   Hi KK
[18:08] <UncleDF64> hi shiral
[18:08] <Shiral> Hi KK, how were the Michealines?
[18:09] <jemler> hi shiral
[18:09] <UncleDF64> 2 1/2 year old daughter
[18:09] <KK> They were good.
[18:09] <the_Bee> Are you home or chatting in secret at work today, Shiral?
[18:09] <Shiral> Uncle, it's later than he thinks
[18:09] <Shiral> Contraband chatting from work today Bee
[18:10] <the_Bee> Nowadsays it seems like they want you to begin your kids' education prenatally.
[18:10] <UncleDF64> Karsu is very smart and will do great in college
[18:10] <KK> Except that education today isn't what it was.
[18:10] <Evie> true
[18:10] <KK> THey don't read what they used to, and they don't memorize anything, I don't think.
[18:11] <Evie> Some things, but not as much
[18:11] <jemler> kk, an article you would like: http://usat.ly/SqJ4y0
[18:11] <the_Bee> and rewards for achievement don't mean as much if every kid gets one.
[18:12] <Evie> There's pretty much no getting around memorizing things like multiplication tables, but there's less emphasis now on remember exact dates on historical events, etc.
[18:12] <KK> Can they recite Preable to Constitution, Gettysburg address,  parts of Shakespeare, Rhyme of the Ancient Mariner, etc.?
[18:12] * Shiral snaps fingers and sets up a sundae bar
[18:12] <UncleDF64> if they even know what those are
[18:12] <Evie> Nope.  My daughter was offered extra credit to memorize a poem last year, but that's the only memorization requirement I remember recently
[18:12] <jemler> "In Xanadu did Kublai Khan, a stately pleasure dome, decree"
[18:12] <the_Bee> I learned the Gettysburg address in 8th grade, but I don't know if I still remember it aall.
[18:13] <Evie> Though in earlier years they had states and capitals, etc.
[18:13] <Alkari> LOL @ KK.   We had to memorise such a lot, and be able to quote slabs of plays and poems in exam essays
[18:14] <the_Bee> Is it still like that in OZ?
[18:14] <KK> Yep.  Still can, too, I'll bet--at last parts of them.
[18:14] <jemler> If we shadows have offended, think but this, and all is mended
[18:14] <UncleDF64> and what the poet meant what he/she was writing
[18:14] <Alkari> Don't know.  Don't have kids at school  :)
[18:14] <Alkari> I am amused by the number of people who can't add up or do simple maths w/o a calculator though
[18:14] <Evie> When my son was in fourth grade, I asked his teacher for advice on how to strengthen his spelling skills, which were abysmal at the time.  She said not to worry; he'd eventually catch on, but if he didn't, there were always spell checkers to fall back on.  I told her that was fine for word processors...
[18:14] <KK> It was good discipline, not to mention giving us party-pieces to spout.
[18:15] <Evie> but that I also wanted him to know how to handle this low-tech instrument known as a pen.  :-D
[18:15] <UncleDF64> and pencil
[18:15] <Shiral> I'm sure the Michaelines were stricter teachers. =o)
[18:15] <KK> Yep, even if technology fails--like two weeks ago, when we were without power--the pen still works.
[18:15] <Alkari> Friend and I, trained in the "old school' methods, could add up columns of scores just by running fingers down the column, and do it as fast as a person tapping into a calculator
[18:16] * Shiral is feeling all her old high school math anxiety coming back in waves
[18:16] <KK> My paternal grandfather had that talent; could out-add an adding machine.
[18:16] * Jerusha (Mibbit@OWIRCN-5591ad81.dsl.bell.ca) has joined #deryni_destinations
[18:16] <Evie> Let's hope!  "Herbert doesn't know the proper form for this ritual.  His technique is sloppy."  "Oh, that's OK, he'll catch on later, and if he doesn't, he can just wing it..."  ;-)
[18:16] <KK> He taught HS maths.
[18:16] <Alkari> This was before the days of fancy computer programmes to add up dressage scores!
[18:16] <jemler> hi jerusha
[18:16] <the_Bee> "I say the earth did shake when I was born!"  "And I say the earth was not of my mind, if you suppose as fearing you it shok."  That one of my fave scenes from Shakespeare.
[18:16] <Evie> hi Jerusha
[18:16] * Alkari waves at erusha
[18:16] <UncleDF64> hi jersuha
[18:16] <Shiral> Hi Jerusha
[18:16] <Jerusha> Hi Everybody!\
[18:17] <the_Bee> Hi jerusha
[18:17] <KK> Hi, Jerusha.
[18:17] <jemler> KK, check this out: http://usat.ly/SqJ4y0
[18:17] <jemler> it's about Once Upon a Time
[18:18] <KK> Yep.  Interesting.
[18:19] <UncleDF64> Season 2 will be very interesting
[18:19] <KK> Looks like it.
[18:19] <jemler> i have usa todayon my ipad
[18:19] <UncleDF64> i'm waiting as well for Season 4 of Vampire Diaries
[18:19] <the_Bee> I was wondering what they'd do for an encore once everyone got their memories back.
[18:19] <KK> Game of Thrones.
[18:19] <jemler> leverage season 5 starts tonight!
[18:20] <Alkari> Oh, I am waiting for season 3 of that, KK  :)
[18:20] <KK> And Political Animals--which could be very interesting, or really terrible.
[18:20] <Alkari> Don't know that out here
[18:20] <KK> It's on a able channel, USA.
[18:21] <KK> cable.  Presumably it's also able
[18:21] <UncleDF64> :D
[18:21] <jemler> cable able tv
[18:22] <the_Bee> I' recording Political Animals, at least till I see how it is.
[18:22] <KK> It's an interesting premise; hopefully it will be good.
[18:23] <jemler> anyone see Perception?
[18:23] <the_Bee> I wonder if it will be Election Year on the show.
[18:23] <the_Bee> Perception?  No.
[18:23] <Alkari> I'll go check it out KK
[18:23] <KK> Read a review of Perception, but missed the opening episode.  Is it good?
[18:23] <jemler> you got a schizo professor helping the fbi
[18:23] <Alkari> Having splurged on cable TV this year
[18:24] <jemler> ep 2 is on tomorrow
[18:24] <the_Bee> I'll have to see if I can get Perception #1 on Hulu.
[18:24] <KK> Ah.  Monday night is not usually good, in the regular season.
[18:25] <jemler> he sees poeple that aren't there, but they help him figure out the crime.
[18:25] <the_Bee> depends on what you like. Im a big fan of Castle.
[18:25] <KK> Kind of like Pergrine?
[18:25] <the_Bee> who?
[18:25] <Alkari> Yes, Castle is good - though I want to hit the guy at times.
[18:25] <KK> Peregrine Lovat, in The Adept.
[18:26] <jemler> Lovat? no he doesn't paint them, he has conversations with them. when they go away, he's solved the case.
[18:26] <Alkari> I'm watching Wallander, the Kenneth Branagh version
[18:26] <the_Bee> Tey're evenly matched in the battle of wits.
[18:26] <Alkari> Though I liked the Swedish one slightly better
[18:27] <the_Bee> I wqtch ed one episode.  Not my cup of tea.
[18:27] <jemler> i have the see the us version of the girl with dragon tattoo
[18:27] <Alkari> I read the first book - might borrow the DVD eventually
[18:28] <Alkari> the second book is sitting on my 'to read soon' pile
[18:28] <jemler> read. watched, own.
[18:28] <jemler> all 3
[18:28] <Alkari> I want to go find Joe Nesbo's books, after watching 'Headhunters'.
[18:28] <jemler> how do you say, read, watched, own in Latin?
[18:28] <Jerusha> Probably not
[18:29] <UncleDF64> very carefully
[18:29] <Jerusha> Sorry, hit enter too soon.
[18:30] <jemler> Found it: Iegere, observabant, sua
[18:30] <Evie> Iegere or legere?
[18:30] <jemler> i was thinking of vini, vici, vidi
[18:30] <Shiral> I walked out of the Swedish version of "Girl with the Dragon Tattoo." One of the only movies I've ever done that to.
[18:30] <the_Bee> By the way, KK, I'm currently roleplaying Evaine in an online game.
[18:30] <Jerusha> That's what I meant to say!
[18:30] <jemler> I aqs in "I've got a lovely bunch of coconuts!"
[18:31] <UncleDF64> :D
[18:31] <Jerusha> Evaine is a wonderfully stong character
[18:31] <jemler> shiral, why?
[18:31] <KK> We went Thursday to see Singing in the Rain on the big screen.  Great!
[18:31] <Shiral> It wasn't at all my cup of tea, and it seemed like all the characters were pretty cold and unlikeable
[18:31] <Alkari> Oh, that's a great movie!!
[18:32] <KK> I once walked out of Duel in the Sun.
[18:32] <Alkari> That dance sequence always brings a smile to my face
[18:32] <KK> Yes!
[18:32] <Shiral> I've always liked "Be a Clown
[18:32] <Alkari> The old musicals can be such FUN.
[18:32] <Alkari> I watched South Pacific on TV a week ago
[18:33] <KK> It's in the TCM series that's playing on the big screen.  So far, Casablanca, His Girl Friday, and now Singing.
[18:33] <the_Bee> One of the rules is, we have to imagine an alternate version of the canonic character, and she has to be taken to another world as she's about to die.  I chose, "what if Evaine had died giving birth to Jerusha?"
[18:33] <Alkari> Mmmm - Casablanca!
[18:33] <jemler> Casablanca. round up the usual suspects
[18:33] <Evie> interesting, Bee
[18:33] <Alkari> That has to be one of the great ending lines!
[18:33] <Shiral> "We'll always have parrotts er, Paris
[18:33] <Jerusha> Oh! I assume you don't mean me!
[18:34] <Evie> That would be very AU, Jerusha. ;-)
[18:34] <Shiral> What if Jehana had died when her second child was born?
[18:35] <Jerusha> What if the second child had lived and Kelson had a supportive sister?
[18:35] <UncleDF64> what if??
[18:35] <Shiral> A nice spunky Haldane princess.. I could get behind that. =o)
[18:35] <the_Bee> Evaine steps oout of her body and lands in a field beyond space and time.  Then she has to keep the bad guys from destroying all reality.
[18:36] <Jerusha> BRB - whippet has to go outside
[18:36] <jemler> she's entered "The Twilight Zone"
[18:36] <the_Bee> Currently she's fighting an evil sorceress.
[18:38] <KK> Evaine would kick psychic butt.
[18:38] <Shiral> She already did!
[18:38] <Jerusha> Back
[18:38] <the_Bee> Well, she's summoned the Archangels.
[18:38] <KK> Kelson could have had a troublesome sister.
[18:39] <the_Bee> Unfortunately, I don't know much about her opponent.
[18:39] <Jerusha> She could have learned anti-Deryni ways from Mon
[18:39] <Jerusha> Mom
[18:39] <Shiral> True. What if little sister took after Maman in her religious insecurity
[18:40] <jemler> a troublesome sister? what a concept! :)
[18:40] <KK> I'll be meeting the young Jehana in the next week.
[18:40] <Alkari> ooh - interesting!
[18:40] <KK> Learning a bit about what made her the way she was.
[18:40] <jemler> don't let on you're Deryni!
[18:40] <Evie> oh, cool!
[18:40] <Jerusha> She could have been a "Daddy's" girl, and been a thorn in her mother's side
[18:40] <the_Bee> KK, Evaine's training is largely for scholarship.  What resources would she have in combat?
[18:40] <Alkari> I feel a little sorry for Jehana in some ways
[18:41] <Shiral> OOO, so does Brion have any qualms about Jehana or does he just fall for her like a ton of royal bricks?  =o)
[18:41] <UncleDF64> she did redeem herself eventually
[18:41] <the_Bee> yes.  all the opportunity she lost with Brion.
[18:41] <Jerusha> A little to late.  What is she would have suceeded in having Morgan executed?
[18:42] <jemler> a knew a woman who was forbidden to read any books that did not refer, or allude to Christ.
[18:42] <Shiral> Two weeks with Barrett Delaney is more effective than a husband a son and a lot of 12 step programs. =o)
[18:42] <KK> That's true.
[18:42] <KK> A shame she didn't meet him sooner.
[18:43] <KK> Jemler, what about school?
[18:43] <jemler> John Nivards Mass on the Portal helped a lot too.
[18:43] <Shiral> I've always wondered how Kelson feels about Barrett: Is it gratitude or is it "How did  HE do what Father and I never could?" Or some of both?
[18:43] <jemler> i don't now how she did that. i met thru a place i worked at about 15 years ago. haven't seen here since.
[18:44] <the_Bee> I think he'd be glad SOMEONE got through to her.
[18:44] <Jerusha> Though it was a coucil member
[18:44] <KK> I think Kelso would be grateful that his mother has found both love and peace.
[18:44] <KK> Kelson, too.
[18:44] <jemler> and a baby
[18:44] <Jerusha> He won't mind a new half sister
[18:44] <Evie> Especially since that keeps Jehana off his back.  ;-)
[18:44] <Shiral> And now she'll leave him IN peace except for urging him to beget some heirs.=o)
[18:45] <Alkari> LOL - I hope that Jehana is happy.
[18:45] <UncleDF64> ;)
[18:45] <KK> With Araxie, somehow I don't think that will be a problem.
[18:45] <Alkari> And that she stops looking daggers at Alaric all the time  :D
[18:45] <jemler> he's married now, so he'd be getting a lot! :)
[18:45] <Shiral> She has that nice fertile background being of Von Horthy as well as Haldane blood
[18:45] <Jerusha> A lot of daggers???
[18:45] <Alkari> Poor Alaric has worn the brunt of Jehana's hatred for all those years
[18:46] <UncleDF64> I wonder how Vivienne would have reacted if she had lived long enough to have seen Barrett marrying Jehana
[18:46] <jemler> full deryni marrying full deryni?
[18:46] <Shiral> I can envision top of Vivienne's head flying off...
[18:46] <Jerusha> She would probably be pleased
[18:46] <the_Bee> She would have said, "aat least she's not a half-breed."
[18:46] <Evie> lol
[18:46] <Alkari> Vivienne is even now rotating in her grave!!
[18:46] <Shiral> From sheer astonishment
[18:46] <jemler> or problems with Lewys ap Norfal?
[18:47] <Evie> whirling in her grave, ululating at high pitch
[18:47] <Jerusha> Who is related to Jehana, isn't he?
[18:47] <jemler> yes
[18:47] <Shiral> I hope if Brion knows, he's content with the situation.=o)
[18:47] <Alkari> Brion is laughing his head off, I bet!
[18:47] <Jerusha> Big extended family
[18:47] <the_Bee> Brion will just have to like it or lump it.
[18:49] <KK> Jerusha, I doubt Brion ever knows that Jehana is related to Lewys, or what it would mean, if he did know.
[18:49] <UncleDF64> I bet my niece could melt Vivienne's heart even though she's human
[18:49] * jemler puts out blackberry brandy
[18:49] <jemler> uncle's pride. how old is she df?
[18:49] <Alkari> would be interesting if it came out later.
[18:49] <UncleDF64> 2 1/2
[18:49] <Evie> Sure, DF...as long as she doesn't plan on marrying a Deryni!  :-D
[18:49] * the_Bee adds cold cider, both spiked and unspiked.
[18:50] <Alkari> Would people like Rothana and Richenda know, being purebloods and more familiar with the older families?
[18:50] <jemler> melting, melting, what a world....
[18:50] <KK> Probably not, Alkari.  Bremagne is far away.
[18:50] <UncleDF64> no deryni can resist my niece
[18:51] <Alkari> But it's near to where they were born?
[18:51] <Jerusha> The coucil kept track of the old bloodlines, though
[18:51] <Shiral> Is Brion any better a sailor than Kelson?
[18:51] <the_Bee> Is your niece past the Terrible Twos or not there yet?
[18:52] <UncleDF64> she is there off and on
[18:52] <Alkari> Brremagne is not that far from Andelon, surely?
[18:52] <KK> Brion is an ok sailor.  But weather is why I've had to rejig the timing on his marriage to Jehana.
[18:52] <Shiral> So he has to wait impatiently for her all winter? =o)
[18:53] <Shiral> Poor Brion
[18:53] <Jerusha> Were there any healers in Andelon
[18:53] <Alkari> So the storms prevent him going there, KK?
[18:54] <jemler> there might be, but only powerful houses probably had them.
[18:54] <UncleDF64> I
[18:54] <KK> Yep.  It's a marriage by proxy at Twelfth Night in Bremagne, and then a spring wedding in RHemuth.
[18:54] <UncleDF64> forget my last entry
[18:54] <Jerusha> Alaric would have played a part?
[18:55] * Shiral waves farewell, steps onto the gangplank and sets sail for Bremagne
[18:55] <KK> It's a harsh winter that year, and Brion can't risk being shipwrecked or stranded--and the overland trip in winter would be very arduous, even sticking close to the coast.
[18:55] <UncleDF64> bye shiral
[18:55] * Evie waves at Shiral
[18:55] <jemler> bye shiral
[18:55] <Shiral> Adieu, I mus go, dears.
[18:55] <KK> Bye, Shiral.
[18:56] * Alkari waves
[18:56] <Jerusha> Bye Shiral!
[18:56] <the_Bee> glad you came, shiral
[18:56] <Shiral> I'll go say hello to the Royal family of Bremagne!
[18:56] <jemler> parting is such sweet sorrow
[18:56] <Alkari> Do that!!
[18:56] <Shiral> Bye!
[18:56] <Evie> I just got a new Kindle, KK; any idea which of your books are out in that format?
[18:56] * Shiral (Mibbit@504018.A7BCBA.6044E5.E2E484) Quit ( Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client )
[18:57] <KK> Haven't a clue.  Some of them, though.  Try googling.
[18:57] <Evie> ok.  I know the Camber ones weren't, last I checked.  :-(
[18:57] <Jerusha> Not that many, if I remember correctly
[18:58] <KK> The Camber ones are still with Del Rey, and I think they're mostly OP.  I need to sort that out once I finish the current book.
[18:59] <Evie> add to the To-Do list?  :-)
[18:59] <Alkari> But well after "finish current book' :D
[18:59] <KK> Need to get all my backlist back, and get Ace to either reprint or put them into electronic format--or both.
[18:59] <Alkari> Electronic wouold be good, as it would open up a new market for them.
[18:59] <KK> Lammas Night as at the top of the list, and already scanned for light edit.
[19:00] <jemler> anyone proofing the books?
[19:01] <KK> I think they're pretty much proofed, though all the corrections may not have made it into the print versions.
[19:01] <Evie> audio would be great too, as long as they used the first trilogy narrator or a new one
[19:02] <UncleDF64> i believe the first books are on audio
[19:02] <KK> I'll have to see how those are doing, and whether they play to continue.  Another thing on my list.
[19:02] <Jerusha> I still want the definitive pronunciatio of "Alaric"
[19:02] <KK> Al-a-ric.
[19:02] <jemler> 2 people who would be great at audio books: Mel Blanc (dead), Robin Wiliams. add Rich Little.
[19:02] <KK> AL-a-ric.
[19:03] <Evie> I think that's on the main Rhemuth Castle website somewhere, Jerusha.  There's a pronunciation guide somewhere, in FAQs, maybe?
[19:03] <the_Bee> that's what I thought.
[19:03] <Evie> Mel Blanc can voice the dead characters then, jemler
[19:03] <KK> I dont get any input on who reads.
[19:04] <Jerusha> I've heard the germanic version of Alaric given differently, so I've never been sure.
[19:04] <KK> I did get to talk with the first guy, though, and gave him all the pronunciations.
[19:04] <KK> GErmanic would put the emphasis on the second syllable.
[19:05] <Evie> The second guy got most of the words and names right also.  He was just...overly...conscious that he was...reading a book...and sounded a bit Shatnerian
[19:05] <Alkari> rofl
[19:05] <Jerusha> Thanks!
[19:05] <KK> I haven't heard that one.
[19:05] <UncleDF64> :D
[19:05] <the_Bee> The voiceover in this chat says "der-in-AYe as in Aye-aye sir.
[19:05] <Evie> And his Alaric gargles gravel for breakfast, I'd swear
[19:06] <Jerusha> Ick
[19:06] <KK> Der-IN-ee.
[19:06] <the_Bee> I just turn off the sound so I won't have to hear it.
[19:07] <Evie> And Dhugal has such a pronounced Scots accent even when he's not speaking in Border tongue that I wrote my first KK fanfic with him talkin' in brogue th' entire time because it had been 20 years since I read the hard copies of the second trilogy. :-D
[19:07] <Jerusha> Kind of hard on an audio book, though
[19:07] <Evie> Mind, that might not be so bad if it were authentic Scots, but no such luck
[19:08] <KK> I hear that the new animated film Brave has good Scots accents.  Going to see it tomorrow night.
[19:08] <Alkari> Hey, KK -  speaking of actors - did you see that  they have snared Dianna Rigg for Season 3 of GoT?  As Olenna, Queen of Thorns.  :)
[19:08] <Evie> I hope to see that one
[19:08] <Jerusha> It's great fun!
[19:08] <KK> I saw something about that.  The character name means nothing so me, since I've not read the books, but I plan to start on them.
[19:08] <Alkari> I haven't seen Brave yet, or the new "The Avengers"  My heart remains always with Emma Peel and John Steed
[19:09] <Alkari> She's a sharp-tongued grandmother!
[19:09] <KK> BTW, Evie, Scott and I will be at Dragoncon.  Got our acceptance this past week.
[19:09] <Jerusha> And the really great cars!
[19:09] <Evie> HUZZAH!!!!!!!
[19:09] <jemler> i've read the books. so far only saw season 1. no hbo.
[19:09] <Alkari> I only wish there was some way for them to do a scene with her and Charles Dance.
[19:09] <Evie> I will definitely look out for you there then.
[19:09] <the_Bee> I thought the Avengers movie was about the comic book characters.  no relation to John and Emma.
[19:10] <KK> I thought so too, Bee.
[19:10] <jemler> it is.
[19:10] <Evie> And on at least one day, I might be easier to spot in the crowd, if it's cool enough for me to drag out the Servant of Saint Camber costume
[19:10] <jemler> Dance plays Tywin ,right?
[19:10] <Alkari> It is, Bee - that's the thing.  For those of us brought up on Mrs Peel and Steed, there ARe no other "Avengers"
[19:10] <Alkari> yes jemler.
[19:10] <Evie> Darn straight, Alkari.  ;-)
[19:10] <Jerusha> That's for sure!
[19:10] <UncleDF64> :D
[19:11] <Jerusha> And I am partial to champagne
[19:11] <Alkari> That was just such an iconic TV series - when you look at it now, and see those crazy 60's fashions too
[19:11] <KK> We're either showing our age or the quality of reading we do.
[19:11] <Evie> :-D
[19:11] <Jerusha> Works for me
[19:11] <Evie> Remember, we don't age, we mature like fine wine.  ;-)
[19:11] <Alkari> I knw I am getting old when I say that I can remember watching the original runs of Star Trek and the Avengers
[19:12] <KK> Yep, I'm with you on that.
[19:12] <Jerusha> And the Rogues
[19:12] <Alkari> And as I am a Capricorn, I definitely get better with age :D
[19:12] <KK> Don't know the Rogues.
[19:12] <the_Bee> I can remember Howdy Doody.
[19:12] <Alkari> Oh yes, and Clint Eastwood as a young cowboy!
[19:12] <UncleDF64> as does this capricorn
[19:12] <Alkari> *sigh*
[19:12] <jemler> SPOILER ALERT! they arrange for a marriage. between Joffrey and Margaery Tyrell.
[19:12] <Jerusha> Cool show of a family of thieves.
[19:13] <Alkari> KK, do you remember a UK TV series called "Callan" - spy series.
[19:13] <KK> Vaguely, though don't think I saw it.
[19:13] <Alkari> Edward Woodward in the lead
[19:13] <KK> Ah.  I liked Edward Woodward.
[19:13] <Alkari> And - I was chatting to US friends about it - the BBC series of "I Claudius".
[19:14] <KK> YES!
[19:14] <Jerusha> Yes, but I forget the other show he was in
[19:14] <Alkari> that WAS TRULY AMAZING tv
[19:14] <KK> The Enforcer.
[19:14] <Jerusha> That's it
[19:14] <jemler> i liked that show!
[19:14] <KK> And the original Wicker Man.
[19:14] <Alkari> That is a scary movie, KK
[19:14] <Alkari> He was also in Breaker Morant
[19:15] <KK> I saw that for the first time at a con, and it was so crowded I had to stand up for the whole film--and did it.
[19:15] <Alkari> You keep thinking he will get out of it ...  :(
[19:15] <KK> Yes, it was an eerie film.  The remake was horrible.
[19:15] <Alkari> It was a very brave ending
[19:15] <KK> Yes it was.
[19:16] <Alkari> Most remakes do NOT work  :(
[19:16] <the_Bee> Are you talking about Wicker Man or Breaker Morant?
[19:16] <KK> Wicker Man.
[19:16] <Alkari> Wicker Man.    But also BM is sad but true
[19:16] <KK> That one is iconic.
[19:16] <Alkari> There 'was' no other ending for BM
[19:16] <the_Bee> Ah.  I wonder if it's available anywhere?
[19:17] <KK> Most remakes do not need to be remade.
[19:17] <Alkari> SHould be.
[19:17] <Alkari> Exactly KK.
[19:17] <Alkari> Though having said that, I was watching The Magnificent Seven the other day, which of course is a remake of a Kurosawa film
[19:17] <Alkari> Both are classics
[19:17] <jemler> i usually prefer the originals. MIracle on 34th st. clash of the titans. burn the remakes!
[19:17] <KK> That doesn't count.  Yes, both are classics.
[19:18] <the_Bee> Mag 7 was a tv series for a bit.
[19:18] <Jerusha> It wasn't bad
[19:18] <Alkari> But imagine trying to remake Casablanca?  :(
[19:18] <KK> I heard that someone is about to try.
[19:18] <Jerusha> Some things should be left alone
[19:19] <KK> It will flop.
[19:19] <jemler> there's onlt ONE Bogie!
[19:19] <the_Bee> Remember the outrage when They tried colorizing some of the black andd white classics?
[19:19] <Alkari> They did that remake of Cape Fear.  The new one was OK, but I still think Robert Mitchum was perfect in the original
[19:19] <KK> Yep.  Bad mistake.
[19:19] <Alkari> Yes :( at colorisation.
[19:19] <KK> The modern generation doesn't understand black and white.
[19:20] <Alkari> No, and some of it is just simply fantastic use of lighting
[19:20] <UncleDF64> they probably never heard of black and white tv and movies
[19:20] <Alkari> They could get atmosphere in B&W more than in some special effects in some ways
[19:20] <jemler> my sister put an LP on her turntable, and her kids said it was a big CD!
[19:20] <Alkari> LOL.  I still have al my LPs
[19:20] <the_Bee> Still, I wonder if some were originally done in b&w for financial reasons, not aesthetic.
[19:21] <KK> BTW, there are two OZ films in production: OZ the Great and Terible (Disney) and The Witchesw of Oz, which I suspect is a riff on Wicked.
[19:21] <Evie> I have my LPs too, and my kids can't remember what to call them, so they call them "Giant CDs" also
[19:21] <jemler> the thing with James Arness, black and white, scary. imagine if Silence of the Lambs was in B&W!
[19:21] <KK> They didn't have good color yet, Bee.
[19:21] <the_Bee> Are they filmed in OZ?
[19:22] <Alkari> The errol Flynn version of Robin Hood was the first one to really go for broke in Technicolour - 1938
[19:22] <KK> The first one begins in B&W, as the young wizard sets out in his balloon, then switches to color in Oz, just like the original.  It looks pretty good
[19:23] <UncleDF64> my niece has joined me on the couch
[19:23] <jemler> hi niece!
[19:23] * Alkari waves at cute niece
[19:23] <Evie> Is she going to help you type?
[19:23] <Jerusha> Is she visiting you  or you are visting her
[19:23] <UncleDF64> Karsu says hi
[19:23] <the_Bee> Hi DF's Niece
[19:24] <UncleDF64> i'm in north carolina
[19:24] <jemler> don't just sit there, DF! upload a pic to the forum!
[19:24] <UncleDF64> we're watching Top Gear
[19:24] <Jerusha> Yes, please
[19:24] <Jerusha> So she is the next Stig?
[19:24] <Alkari> rofl
[19:24] <the_Bee> My brother recently became a new step-grandpa.
[19:25] <UncleDF64> i dont know how--i could send evie one by e-mail--if she could upoad if for me
[19:26] <Evie> I could do that, as long as her parents don't mind.
[19:26] <UncleDF64> dad prefers not too
[19:26] <Evie> Might be good to check with them first (speaking as a parent who was cautious about that sort of thing)
[19:26] <Evie> OK
[19:27] <jemler> ok. we'll have to settle for the 'cute' description.
[19:27] <KK> Well, I'd better get on with my evening.  Scott is making hungry faces at me.
[19:27] <Evie> OK
[19:27] <KK> See you next week.
[19:27] <Evie> We can chip in and buy him pizza
[19:27] <Evie> ;-)
[19:27] <Alkari> Thanks for coming, KK
[19:27] <jemler> nite kk
[19:27] <UncleDF64> bye kk
[19:27] <the_Bee> Enjoy your dinner and your week, KK.  Good writing!
[19:27] * KK steps onto her Portal, waves goodnight, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.
[19:27] <Alkari> Go feed the Man
[19:28] <Evie> Hope to find you at D*con
[19:28] <KK> Nighters!
[19:28] <Evie> I'll bring the little Deryni
[19:28] <KK> Yes!  By all means, bring them!
[19:28] <Alkari> You will need a mini bus for the family!
[19:28] <Evie> :D
