[19:28] * KK has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[19:28] <&DeryniBot> Sedina gives a highland welcome to KK as they join the chat
[19:28] * DeryniBot sets mode: +o KK
[19:28] <~RainbowDragon> Greetings, KK!
[19:28] <The_Bee> I got the new one because the old one couldn't go online anymore
[19:28] <@KK> Hello, folks.
[19:28] <jemler> if the cables are compatible with your hard drive, you should be able to put your old drive in your new computer.
[19:28] <jemler> hi KK!
[19:28] <The_Bee> Hi KK!
[19:29] <~RainbowDragon> How have your last two weeks been?
[19:29] * @KK surfaces from a weekend of doing tax stuff
[19:29] <+Elim> Morning KK.
[19:29] <The_Bee> nasty tax stuff all over and done?
[19:29] <~RainbowDragon> ugh!
[19:30] <@KK> Like I said, tax stuff--in addition to a very nice weekend last weekend at Marscon.  Good folk there!
[19:30] <+Elim> The_Bee, do you know how to install a second hard drive?
[19:30] <@KK> Not quite, but there's an end in sight.
[19:30] <The_Bee> I don't even know how to install a first
[19:30] <The_Bee> or how to connect two computers
[19:30] <+Elim> It's not that hard.
[19:30] <+Elim> You just lack the specific information.
[19:31] <jemler> bee, if you live near a university, you could check with the computer dept there. they might be willing to help.
[19:31] <The_Bee> can you email me the instructions/ bee-allen@juno.com
[19:32] <The_Bee> I need to know what devices I'd need.  but right now it's KK time :)
[19:32] <jemler> it's not that simple, tou may have to set a jumper on the drive to make it a slave to your first drive.
[19:32] * The_Bee is confused
[19:32] <Elf> Hi KK!
[19:32] <+Elim> We do have a computer help channel on the server.
[19:33] <jemler> there are pins on the drive. they are set using jumopers (small plastic connectors). how they are set tells the drive how to work.
[19:33] <@KK> Hello, Elf.  Ate some of your Shreddies yesterday.  :-)
[19:33] <~RainbowDragon> Were they good?
[19:34] <Elf> Are they the same as in Ireland?
[19:34] <jemler> in ireland, they're made from shredded leprechauns!
[19:35] <@Bynw> hiyas KK
[19:35] <The_Bee> and seasoned with shamrocks
[19:35] <@KK> They were good--but not as good as I remember from Ireland.  Not the same leprechauns, I suppose.  ;-)
[19:35] <The_Bee> so how was the con?
[19:35] <jemler> recycled leprechauns? ugh!
[19:36] <jemler> out of this world, I bet
[19:38] <@KK> It was very good, very relaxed.  I got to meet Robert Buettner, who wrote Orphanage, military SF in the manner of Heinlein.  A very nice guy, and I'm nearly to the end of Orphanage, whiich is, indeed, an excellent homage to Heinlein.  There are at least 2 more to come.
[19:40] <@KK> They also had about the best Con suite I've ever seen--full meals morning, noon, and night.  There was a submarine sandwich on Friday night that was several lengths along an 8-ft. table--and really fresh and yummy!
[19:40] <The_Bee> "military" sci-fi? you means wars and armies?
[19:40] <@KK> Yes.  Think Starship Troopers.
[19:41] <Elf> ahh sounds like the con was a lot of fun then!
[19:41] <The_Bee> heard of it, haven't read it
[19:41] <+Elim> The movie was... Meh.
[19:41] <jemler> haven't read it, sasw the movie!
[19:42] <@KK> It's set in the near future, around 2040, and they're recycling stuff from before 2000 to try to fight the slugs.
[19:42] <+Elim> The second movie was Meh-2.
[19:42] <Elf> Read the book jemler
[19:42] <Elf> Second movie?
[19:42] <jemler> i'm going to start on Darkly dreaming Dexter, next
[19:43] <@KK> One of the nest SF you'll ever read, and very Heinlein in some of his political commentary, about citizenship (and voting rights) having to be earned by service. It has a lot to recommend it.
[19:43] <@KK> There was only one movie, and it was great for the first half, but the director chickened out on the second half.  Stil, it was excellent.
[19:44] <jemler> i'm 4f due to spinal surgery, would that mean I'm not a citizen, and therefore unable to vote?
[19:44] <The_Bee> Have any movies been made of Poul Andersen's books?
[19:44] <@KK> Yep.  You'd still have rights--just not the right to vote.  Those who serve decide the elections.
[19:44] <@KK> Not that I know of, Bee.
[19:44] <@KK> BRB
[19:45] <The_Bee> I like his aliens
[19:45] <jemler> anyone ever read Lucifer's Hammer? It's about a comet striking the Earth?
[19:45] <+Elim> I have.
[19:45] <+Elim> No that is not happening day after tommrow.
[19:45] <The_Bee> I may have.  who wrote it?
[19:45] <+Elim> Layyr Niven.
[19:45] <+Elim> Larry*
[19:46] <Elf> yes Niven and Pournelle wrote it jemler excellent
[19:46] <jemler> good story. i think it was Larry Niven and Poul Andersen.
[19:46] <+Elim> With Jerry Pournele.
[19:46] <The_Bee> sounds familiar, but I thought it was by Arthur C Clarke
[19:46] <jemler> Jerry, that's right. my bad.
[19:46] <+Elim> Now I am unsure, Let me check.
[19:46] <jemler> Childhood's End, Redevouz with Rama, etc...
[19:47] <Elf> those were Arthur C Clarke jemler but Lucifer's Hammer is Niven with Pournelle
[19:47] <+Elim> Reah Childhood's end and the entire 2001 series.
[19:47] <+Elim> read*
[19:47] <+Elim> Gah, typos.
[19:47] <jemler> i think they also did "The Mote in God's Eye"
[19:47] <Elf> yes they did Jemler
[19:47] <+Elim> They did, and Gripping Hand.
[19:47] <@KK> back
[19:48] <+Elim> There are about 5-6 Larry Niven books that I haven't read.
[19:48] <The_Bee> Who writes about time travel?  there was one about people going back to change Columbus's explorations
[19:48] <jemler> don't know that one. vaguely remember the Lensman series.
[19:48] <jemler> wb kk
[19:48] <Elf> many have done Time
[19:48] <+Elim> He once offered to sell me the rights for Known Space.
[19:48] <Elf> lensman was ee "Doc" Smith
[19:49] <jemler> big teardrop shaped starships, right?
[19:49] <Elf> wb KK
[19:49] <The_Bee> if you bought known space, Elim, would you let us continue to occupy it?
[19:49] <+Elim> The_Bee, for you, I would make an exception.
[19:50] <jemler> talk about a monopoly! :)
[19:50] <The_Bee> LOL
[19:50] <Kelric> oh hi kk
[19:50] <@KK> Just put the dumplings into the chicken & dumplings that I'm making in my slow cooker--great joy since discovering that they now make frozen stuff to go in one, so all you have to do is put it in and forget about it for 8 hrs.
[19:51] <@KK> It smells great!
[19:51] <Kelric> mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
[19:51] * Kelric 's mouth waters
[19:51] <+Elim> I was working for one of the gaming publishers on the server and they were interested in making a Known Space setting.
[19:51] <The_Bee> sounds yummy, but won't you be awfully hungry if you have to wait 8 hours?
[19:52] <@KK> I started it around noon.  ;-)
[19:52] <The_Bee> ah
[19:52] <@KK> Dumplings go for another half hour.
[19:52] <Kelric> nom nom nom
[19:52] <@KK> The beef stews that they do have potatoes that you put in for the last half hour, so they don't get mushy.
[19:52] <The_Bee> I have a slow cooker, but I get meals on wheels
[19:53] <Elf> mm I just finshed my pasta but I cheated and used a soup with spices and thickened up with other stuff.
[19:53] <The_Bee> soup for broth=yummy
[19:53] <+Elim> I have one of those new three pot slow cookers.
[19:54] <+Elim> I make a mean chicken soup in it.
[19:54] <@KK> (William Shatner is doing some really silly commercials these days, for some company that gets you cheap hotel reservations.  How the mighty have fallen.)
[19:54] <Elf> heh He has made a career out of laughing at himself these days.
[19:54] <The_Bee> He's doing ok on Boston Legal
[19:55] <@KK> Mine is just a cheapy that holds 3 quarts--whicih is about the right size for just the two of us.
[19:55] <jemler> have you seen his character Denny Crane on Boton Legal (I think that's the series) He's nuttier than a jar of peanut butter!
[19:55] <Elf> Have you seen Shatner's "I am a Canadian"
[19:55] <@Bynw> the priceline commericals have been going on for a number of years ... they are just getting worse now
[19:56] <@KK> I've seen a couple of episodes, but I'm not able to get into it.  Don't care much for comedy.  CSI and NCIS are more my speed.
[19:56] <The_Bee>  I watch them too
[19:56] <jemler> have you ever watched Criminal Minds?
[19:56] <@KK> Yes.  Also like that.
[19:56] <The_Bee> I tape it
[19:56] <@KK> And Numbers.
[19:57] <+Elim> I stopped watching TV regularly about 7-8 years ago.
[19:57] <jemler> don't do Numbers, stargate Atlantis on Sci-Fi
[19:57] <@Bynw> i only like 3 programs. 2 of which are BBC productions and one is Sci-Fi production
[19:57] <The_Bee> anyone know about a show called "Dexter"?  forensic pathologist by day, serial killer by night who only kills bad guys
[19:58] <jemler> that's based on the book I'm about to read, Darkly dreaming Dexter!
[19:58] <The_Bee> I watch Waking the Dead from BBC
[19:58] <The_Bee> I was wondering about that!
[19:59] <The_Bee> I don't get the cable channel, but it's coming to cbs
[19:59] <@KK> Cold Case File is also good.
[19:59] <The_Bee> is that non-fiction?
[19:59] <jemler> the one on A&E, or the one with Kathryn Morris?
[19:59] <jemler> one is real, the other fiction.
[19:59] <+Elim> I fork out $70 a month for sattelite, that I don't even watch more than once or twice a year.
[20:00] <The_Bee> I only get basic cable. few non-network channels
[20:00] <@KK> Not sure; haven't been watching it that long.  We dumped our satellite, because they couldn't make it work properly.  Now on Comcast cable.
[20:00] <@Bynw> for those that want to know ... it's Doctor Who, TorchWood and Battlestar Galactica ... other than those 3 programs TV is junk
[20:00] <The_Bee> I have comcast cable
[20:00] <+Elim> Firefly was good.
[20:01] * +Elim casts NetFlix.
[20:01] <Kelric> I have to agree with Bynw
[20:01] * Kelric watches anime.
[20:01] <jemler> wrong! Moonlight, Kyle XY, Law & Order SVU, CSI
[20:01] <@KK> Some of those things we missed, because they hadn't yet made it to Europe.
[20:01] <Elf> I watch very little TV these days...
[20:01] <@KK> I agree on Moonlight and SVU--and CSI, of course.  Haven't managed to catch Kyle XY.
[20:01] <@Bynw> well any Law and Order is OK
[20:02] <@Bynw> but i can live without it
[20:02] <The_Bee> If the strike lasts longer, I have several months of shows on vcr
[20:02] <+Elim> Jericho was good also.
[20:02] <Elf> Law and Order I have seen it is good. also original CSI
[20:02] <jemler> being a judge must be a trying experience
[20:02] * +Elim casts NetFlix again.
[20:02] <The_Bee> I saw the first season of Kyle XY onabs, but I forgot to watch the final episode :(
[20:03] <The_Bee> abc
[20:03] <jemler> want me to upload them, or put them on a disc?
[20:03] * Kelric casts repel reality show.
[20:03] <+Elim> Having lived through the end of the cold war, Jericho struck a chord with me.
[20:03] <The_Bee> I can't get sound on my computer
[20:04] <The_Bee> but i HAVE A DVD PLAYER
[20:04] <jemler> if you have a dvdplayer, i can do that too.
[20:04] <jemler> well.....
[20:04] <@KK> For some reason, I now can't get sound either.  Tried to listen to a DVD yesterday, and nada, zip.
[20:04] <The_Bee> actually, my public library has dvds of many tv shows
[20:05] <jemler> and all mine still have the commercials in them. it's a b^&*(h to get them out!
[20:05] <The_Bee> including Kyle XY, I believe
[20:05] <The_Bee> I just fast-forwrd through commercials, unless they're really funny
[20:06] <Kelric> speaking about commercials,  1 week until prospectively the best commercials of the year so far
[20:07] <jemler> i have all of Highlander, Charmed, The Pretender, Stargate SG-1, and most of Stargate Atlantis. (Highlander, and Pretender are still on VHS)
[20:07] <The_Bee> SUPERBOWL SUNDAY!  GO PATS!
[20:07] <+Elim> That is a language I don't speak.
[20:07] <@KK> Er, is that <next> Sunday? Do I care?  (Not a sports follower.)
[20:08] <The_Bee>  a local station carries SG-1, Stargate Atlantis and Dead Zone syndications
[20:08] <The_Bee> I care because a new england team is in it.
[20:09] <+Elim> KK, Don't feel bad, I don't do sports either.
[20:09] <jemler> Being silly here: The Boston Red Sox?
[20:09] <The_Bee> They're going for the first undefeated season in NFL history
[20:09] <The_Bee> New England Patriots
[20:09] <jemler> heh
[20:09] <Kelric> I'd like to see them fail.
[20:09] <@KK> I don't feel bad.  I simply have no interest.  But I don't begrudge those who do. Some of my best friends are rabid about football, baseball--God help 'em!
[20:10] <The_Bee> so would a lot of people
[20:10] <The_Bee> like to see them lose, that is
[20:11] <The_Bee> I don't watch, I just check the final score
[20:11] <jemler> most people around here are Pittsburgh Steeler fans. I'm one of the few who aren't.
[20:11] <+Elim> Bynw, Fred's on the radio.
[20:11] <Elf> never been an NFL fan
[20:12] <The_Bee> I just root for the home team, whether it's sports or spelling bees
[20:12] <The_Bee> but I seldom watch sports
[20:14] <The_Bee> I'd rather read a novel
[20:15] <+Elim> We were discussing this earlier.
[20:15] <@KK> Well, gotta go and take care of my chicken & dumplings before Scott attacks it and eats it all.  Hope to have book progress to report next week!
[20:15] <The_Bee> Hello? Is anyone still awake?
[20:16] <+Elim> Hello The_Bee.
[20:16] <%DesertRose> Okay, KK.  Take care!
[20:16] <Elf> Enjoy KK!
[20:16] <jemler> kk is, but she's leaving  :(

[20:16] <+Elim> Yeesh he poofed fast.
[20:16] * @KK steps onto her Portal, waves good night, and wafts away on the aroma of chicken & dumplings.
[20:16] <+Elim> HAve fun KK
[20:16] <@Bynw> cya later KK dont forget to add Edge Hill history to the new website
[20:16] <@KK> Ah.  Will do.

[20:17] * @KK Quit (Quit: )
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
