CERTAIN Haldanes, maybe. I doubt Morgan would have wanted his girls to marry someone like Conall. OR Cinhil!

;D

Heavens No! Not a Conall! With hope, there could be only one of those.

Isn't it about time for a member of the Morgan family to marry a Prince of Gwynedd. Kelson's sons will be Grania's age, as will Rory's sons. True that Rory's kids are not Deryni but that Haldane potential appears to have become accepted in all the worthy members of that family line.  Of course there will be Dhugal's sons but wouldn't that be marrying your 2nd cousin-- acceptable but a little close. If Grania doesn't fall in love with one of these acceptable young eligible knights, then I will feel sorry for her trying to convince her middle aged father that some other young man could possibly be worthy of her hand.

Hah! Evie and Jerusha! Time for you both to brush off your typewriter keys and write sequels to The Rustic Prince and to Fall from Grace ;D Coordinate your stories and we could have a great time reading them.
Of course, Grania will have a bit of competition with Jana and with all the daughters of the Maidens of Mayhem. LOL I don't think there will be enough boys to go around.
May your horses have wings and fly!

No rules because he trusts his daughters completely, or no rules because no one is ever going to get close enough to one of his precious daughters to date them?  Or both? ;D
[/quote]

The latter, methinks!! although I also suspect that Morgan will mentally see his daughters as sweet little girls of the age Briony is in KKB and will need Richenda to educate him a little on the realities of female wiles as applied to such "angels". I also think that he will miss Bronwen even more terribly as the years go by and she is not there to gently help him deal with his daughters growing up.

I have a fanfic written which sort of touches of this but have lost confidence in posting - don't know why because you are all so nice.

OK, none of that holding off posting fanfic because you're worried it's pants (*coughAnniecough*)! If you need help getting it polished and posting-ready, email it to someone you trust as a beta-reader to help you whip it into shape. Don't hide your light under a bushel....  ;D

I've been watching The Tudors on Netflix lately, and I swear at times it's like watching what the Haldane dynasty could have turned into if Conall had remained on the throne! The actor playing Henry VIII even had the right look for Conall, with his dark hair, somewhat petulant expression (especially when crossed), and that cheesy mustache.... :D And the actress playing Queen Catherine of Aragon, while she doesn't look at all like Rothana, has a similar air of royal dignity and sense of duty about her, not to mention the full truckloads of stubborn pride. I can definitely imagine Rothana turning out similarly after a decade or two of marriage to Conall.

Or what about Game of Thrones?  There is very little to choose between Connall and Joeffery.

I'll have to take your word for it.  I never managed to make it past the first episode of Game of Thrones, I don't think.  I loved what I saw of the costuming and settings in that first episode and in still photos online, but couldn't handle what a friend of mine only half-jokingly referred to as "all that bloody sex and pornographic violence."  :D  I hear enough stories of sexual abuse and/or dysfunctional sexuality nearly every week in my recovery group (my ministry is to survivors of abuse, including childhood sexual abuse and incest), so if a show is going to show overt sex and violence, I really need the two to remain completely separate.  The Tudors pretty much hit my uppermost limit of what I'm willing to watch in terms of graphic sex or violence in a visual medium, and even with that show, I occasionally found myself skipping to the next scene so I could get back to the plot. "OK, I get it, Henry; evidently your century's Viagra equivalent is good stuff!  I'm amazed at how much you're able to get it on despite having an ulcerated leg!  Clearly your desire for a male heir and spare must be providing a great deal of psychosomatic pain relief. Now let's get back to the story, shall we?"  ;D

It's a shame, though, since I rather liked the bits that I read of the book version of Game of Thrones. But with a book, it's easier to pick and choose which details to focus on and visualize in my mind's eye.  In visual media, that's a lot harder to do, since those details (and how explicitly they're depicted) are chosen by the filmmaker.  (And to a lesser extent for me, audiobooks can have similar problems.  The scene in the Deryni books where Loris tortures Duncan is difficult for me to listen to in the audiobook form, because the torture seems to go on for-blooming-ever, whereas I have no difficulty getting through that scene when reading it in text, despite my empathy for what the poor man is going through.)

But yeah, from what I've heard about Joffrey from others who have watched GoT or read that far ahead, he does come across as a little slimeball, doesn't he?  Although I thought Joffrey was blond rather than dark-haired, whereas the guy who played Henry VIII actually has the short black (or nearly black) hair and mustache that Conall is described as having, and while I'm not sure what color eyes the actor has, they looked gray or at least grayish-blue in some scenes.  Close enough to Haldane coloring for me, at any rate. So that's what first made me think about the resemblance between the two royals.

Yes, he's very blond, and really quite handsome outside, but inside he's a sadistic, sociopathic creep; and not very bright, either.  (As his uncle Tyrion--the only person who stands up to him--says, Westeros has had stupid kings and wicked kings, but he's the only one to be both.  Tyrion even slaps his face--and he thoroughly deserves to be slapped; repeatedly.)  Fortunately, he gets his comeuppance.

A few mini-projects to share today:

Faux wax tablets by evian_delacourt, on Flickr

I found these miniature fake chalkboards at Michael's.  They originally had small wooden stakes hot-glued to the backs of them, I suppose to serve as garden (or flowerpot) stakes or some such.  I popped the stakes off the back of each (they came 5 boards per package) and then used a bit of wood stain on them.  The hinges are made of faux leather, and I used fabric glue to attach them to the wooden plates, black sides facing inward to look like the black wax of a Roman or medieval style tabula (writing notebook).  I will modify a wooden toothpick and stain it to make a matching stylus.  These are large tabulae, about the equivalent of US letter sized paper in 1:6 scale, but eventually I want to make some really tiny ones that would fit in an action figure's hand.  And maybe even some with real wax instead of black paint for the writing surface.

Future thrones by evian_delacourt, on Flickr

I attacked some pink Barbie thrones with some plastic spray paint today.  I didn't manage to cover all of the pink, but that's fine; I just need enough of a primer layer for my acrylic paints to stick.  I am thinking of making the "wooden" parts of the thrones a jet black with gold accents, and painting the "fabric" portions Haldane crimson.  The "B" on the shield will need to be covered, but I'm thinking some air drying clay could be used to cover the inside of that shield shape, and then painted with the Haldane arms once it's dry and sanded smooth.

More on the thrones project:

Repainting the throne back cushions-1 by evian_delacourt, on Flickr

Last night I started painting the cushioned throne backs with crimson paint to match Kelson's crimson Haldane arms. Here is a chair after the initial coat of paint.  Bits of tan still peek through the first layer, although they're not as obvious in this photo as they were to the naked eye.

Repainting the throne back cushions--2 by evian_delacourt, on Flickr

Here are the chairs after several coats of crimson paint had been added and allowed to dry for several minutes between coats.  I think this was after about 5 or 6 coats of paint had been added.  I am not overly worried about staying "between the lines," since the frame of the chair will be black, with gold added to the raised embellishments as a final touch, so that should cover the tiny bits of red that went out of bounds.

On the final layer of paint, I mixed just a tiny bit of black into the remaining crimson paint and watered it down to a thin wash, then brushed that over the crimson, adding emphasis to the lines of "quilting" on the seat backs.  This was taken after the wash sat on it for several minutes and was mostly dry.  (I had the chairs lying on their back to start off with, to help keep the watery paint from all flowing to the bottom of the quilting lines.)  The darker shading helps add a more dimensional look to the seat backs.  I want to go back later and dry-brush in some highlights in crimson that's mixed with just a touch of white.  Once that's done and fully dry, I'll seal it with a clear sealer (probably a matte sealer) and move on to painting the rest of the chairs black.

And last night's work:

Splotchy first coat by evian_delacourt, on Flickr

I applied the first coat of black paint.  This looked very streaky and splotchy under the camera flash (not quite as bad as this to the naked eye in regular room lighting, but still obviously needed more paint layers).  I let it dry for a few minutes before applying a second coat.

Second coat of black by evian_delacourt, on Flickr

A second coat of black shows some marked improvement, but I think I will need at least three coats of paint before I am ready to apply sealer.  I also dry-brushed a slightly lighter shade of crimson over the raised areas of the "padding." It seems to add just a touch more dimensionality, although it's hard to see much of a difference.

So I left my phone (and therefore my phone camera) at home this morning, but a co-worker took a snapshot of this little scene for me:

Very nice scene, but it must be cold up on that shelf.  Both Duncan and Helena are well-wrapped in their Christmas sweaters and warm scarves.

Is Duncan getting Helena some nice warm socks this year?   ;D

LOL!  He should, shouldn't he?  Actually, after I dressed her I realized that I have no idea where her modern shoes have disappeared to, so that's why she's sporting the barefoot look.

That's also why Duncan is still wearing his chausses.  I had some khaki cargo pants for him, but no shoes to pair them with (unless I used his medieval shoes), so I figured he could just pretend he's wearing modern leather trousers and shoes and look like he's masquerading as a hipster.   ;D
