That she killed her husband may not be proved to the satisfaction of the secular law.  But bearing false witness against Fr. John and (mis)using her Deryni powers to reinforce it can be [....]

Just to clarify, she did bear false witness against Fr John, but she didn't use her Deryni powers at any time during that encounter or her subsequent one with Briony.  She had originally planned on using them to blur Fr Shandon's memories of her confession, but upon realizing that Fr John was standing in for him that morning, she realized that strategy wouldn't work against a Deryni priest, nor would it have worked on Briony.  So far she's done nothing that is particularly a "Deryni" crime, although yes, if Fr Shandon had been present that day, she would have.  But then again, if he'd been there that day, she would have succeeded in her plan and no one would have been any wiser.   :)

If she ends up needing to have her powers somehow blocked (whether by medication or a spell to prevent her escape, since no one is likely to have rediscovered the Blocking talent yet), it probably wouldn't be so much as a punitive measure for misuse of her powers as it would be due to security reasons.  And this is all a big ol' speculative "if."  Lots of things can happen between now and the end of the story, and who's to say some twist in the storyline yet to come won't alter the eventual outcome in ways that are, as yet, unforeseeable?  *cryptic smile*

Who's to say that merasha or blocking powers are the only ways to keep a Deryni prisoner from having full use of her powers, though?  ....  Therefore something had to have been in place to keep Morag from picking locks, controlling guards, and doing other sneaky Deryni stuff while Richenda was otherwise occupied.  Yes, some sort of entrapment spell is one possibility, but that doesn't mean there can't be others.

Yes, that's what I was meaning - there have to be plenty of 'other' Deryni ways to keep a Deryni confined.  Indeed, a day or so after Morag is first taken into custody in TKJ, there is that conversation about how she and young Liam have settled down.  Richenda remarks that Morag has stopped trying to tamper with the people she comes into contact with, once she realises they have been 'protected': the implication seems to be that Morag is locked up securely, but has of course tried to use her powers to "persaude" the servants or guards to help her escape or wreak havoc.

Merasha was really the only way that Church officials and other humans could prevent a Deryni from using his / her powers, and of course it had the marvellous extra benefit of 'muddling' Deryni senses and physically affecting them so that their identity became obvious (as we saw with Jorian de Courcy).  I got the impression that its use with Conall was simply because Dhugal had had enough after the duel with Kelson and couldn't be bothered with anything too fancy - Conall was going to be executed, so who cared if he spent the next few days locked up in a merasha fog?  :D

Perhaps.  Although to put it in the proper order, what originally happened was that Ędwige yelled (at the time, empty) threats at the priest, yanked the door open, noticed poor Briony standing there in shock (having overheard the raised voice through the closed door), and then had to quickly concoct some cover story to explain what Briony had overheard without giving the actual truth of the matter away.  And, in doing so, quite happily discovered that she could make good on her threats against John after all, without having to do anything that would point the finger of suspicion back on herself once it's determined that the story she told was, while wholly factual, also deliberately misleading.  After all, she never actually said that John had propositioned her...is it her fault if Briony jumped to entirely the wrong assumptions?  And she did ask Briony several times not to pass the story on, but the girl absolutely insisted, and who is poor Lady Ędwige to tell a Duke's daughter what to do?...   ;)  ;D

But don't worry; John will get his chance to speak for himself in the next chapter.  As much as his vows will allow him to, at least....   :D

Hmmmm! Perhaps Brendan will meet with lady Aedwige and she'll obligingly give herself away without realizing it and without the encumbrance of swearing Brendan to inconvenient secrecy? And so that he corroborates  and backs up Father Nivard's  truthful version of events?

I would so love to see Aedwige eating a healthy portion of humble pie!
Or maybe Rothana will pick up some  clues from Briony, and since she's rooming with Aedwie, I'll bet she can put two and two together!

If there is an oubliette in the castle, Aedwige could be put in there with a couple of Stenrect crawlers staring at her (that only she can see)--not moving towards her--just looking at her and making whatever noises those creatures make--and being told what they are and what would happen to her if they bite her.
We will never forget the events of 9-11!!  USA!! USA!!

...somewhere so remote that the they keep 'possums for yard dogs...

Is that area any relation to the area so remote that they have to ship daylight in by pack train? :)
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

The next valley over, probably.
