[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:17:38] <kirienne> Hi Katherine
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:17:41] <the_Bee> We've missed you.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:17:44] <Kelric> you'll see me around most of the night though i will be nodding off in my hospital room
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:17:57] <the_Bee> Hospital??
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:17:59] <Shiral> Hello Katherine
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:18:04] <KK> So, how is everybody? Kelric, what are you doing in the hospital?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:18:06] <Evie> Doing better tonight, kelric?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:18:16] <Kelric> remember what happened back in september? The pancreatitis attack?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:18:18] <BalancettheEnergies> Hello Katherine
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:18:26] <KK> Yeah. Again?

[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:18:37] <the_Bee> hello the shiral
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:18:38] <AnnieUK> hello KK
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:18:44] <BalancettheEnergies> I hope your prognosis is good Kelric.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:18:47] <Shiral> Here I am, the One and Only Shiral
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:19:03] <Evie> Hello, O&OS
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:19:03] <kirienne> I hope you're better soon Kelric
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:19:14] <Kelric> well, I had the gall bladder out with no complications back in January. Well my period of limitations for pre-existing conditions ended just about a week ago so I had the procedure to have the psuedocyst involved start draining.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:19:28] <Kelric> the procedure had a 1/25 chance in setting off a major case of pancreatitis...
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:19:43] <Kelric> by the time I was home I was having pain of an 11 on a 10 point scale.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:19:51] <KK> And you were the 1 in 25. Yuck!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:19:51] <kirienne> yikes
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:19:55] <the_Bee> YOWTCH!!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:19:56] <Kelric> I got to the ER and was admitted to the ICU by about 10pm.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:20:22] <Kelric> my pain is pretty much gone at this point and I've been put in a regular room and cleared for clear liquids.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:20:23] <the_Bee> ARE YOU RECOVERING NOW?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:20:25] * jojo sends waves of empathy
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:20:35] <BalancettheEnergies> No diabetes in the offing, I hope. :s
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:20:42] <Kelric> I hopefully will be going home either tuesday or wednsday.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:20:45] <Kelric> I don't think so.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:20:47] * the_Bee sends feel-better woodgies to kelric
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:21:00] <Kelric> all I know is that there will be NO gencon this yere :(
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:21:14] <the_Bee> :(
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:21:40] <KK> Is this what happens when I'm away for a few weeks?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:21:42] <jojo> Have you been ok, KK?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:21:53] <Kelric> snort.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:21:54] <KK> I'm fine; just busy.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:00] <DesertRose> Some people get sick, other people get kittens.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:01] <kirienne> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:04] <Shiral> See, you have to stick around, KK, or we all get sick with longing. =o)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:04] <Evie> Writing, we hope. :-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:12] <the_Bee> any news--book, movie or animals?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:21] <KK> Yep, writing.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:25] <AnnieUK> yay!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:27] <kirienne> Yippeeee
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:29] <Shiral> Excellent
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:30] <DesertRose> Yayz!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:52] <Evie> Good, because I just finished Childe Morgan this week and am going through withdrawal
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:22:59] <KK> No new news, except that we got to meet and talk to HRH Prince Edward a few weeks ago, in Greenville, SC.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:23:05] <DesertRose> Oh, cool.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:23:10] <kirienne> cool
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:23:12] <Evie> sweet!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:23:13] <KK> Nice guy!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:23:16] <DesertRose> What the heck was he doing in Greenville?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:23:39] <KK> The best one-day highland games in the South, and we arranged for his attendance.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:23:44] <DesertRose> Oh, awesome.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:24:16] <the_Bee> i attended the Highland Games in Antigonish, Nova Scotia once.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:24:17] <Shiral> Must be hot work for anyone wearing a kilt in SC
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:24:37] <DesertRose> Greenville is in the foothills of the Appalachians, so it might not be THAT hot.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:24:38] <DesertRose> :)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:24:41] <KK> We have a wonderful picture of us welcoming him to the parade the night before--Scott shaking his hand, and me in the background looking hot, which it was.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:24:43] <Evie> Try wearing wool in Atlanta in summer. :-D
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:24:51] <KK> It was hot.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:24:58] <Elim> Dunno, it was bloody hot when I was in South Carolina about a month ago.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:25:09] <DesertRose> That's why nobody in Florida wears wool SCA garb.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:25:12] <DesertRose> Too darn hot.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:25:15] <KK> That's about when we were there.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:25:32] <DesertRose> My garb should be wool or silk, but it's mostly linen because anything else would be too hot.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:25:38] <Elim> I was in Spartanburg.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:25:41] <KK> If I'd discovered the SCA when I was living in Florida, I probably wouldn't have joined.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:25:51] <AnnieUK> do you do the tossing the caber and stuff at US highland games?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:02] <KK> Absolutely.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:05] <Shiral> It's fun to play in the middle ages, but not if it brings on Heat Exhaustion
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:06] <AnnieUK> cool!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:16] <kirienne> yep, all the games I have attended have the caber toss etc
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:23] <KK> And I think the count on pipers this year was something like 145.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:43] <DesertRose> Yeah, our former seneschal's wife is a nurse and she used to fuss at us about staying hydrated and cool at events.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:44] <Shiral> That's a honkin' great number of bagpipes
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:48] <AnnieUK> my dad always wanted me to learn the pipes, but my mum wouldn't go for it
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:48] <Evie> We wear a lot of early Celtic and Greek chitons in Meridies (US Southeast) in summer
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:53] <DesertRose> That's a bunch of pipes.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:26:55] <KK> They also do the one where they try to toss a sheaf over a high cross-bar.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:27:05] <kirienne> wow, I would have loved to hear all those pipers, I'm sure the games I attended in Woodland Ca did not have that many
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:27:13] <the_Bee> I enjoy bagpipe music if it's well played.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:27:24] <DesertRose> Yeah, chitons are the way to go in Trimaris in the summer too.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:27:30] <Evie> I play pennywhistle...very very badly.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:27:31] <AnnieUK> one of my mum and dad's friends was the pipe major of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:27:35] <AnnieUK> he was GOOD
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:27:46] <Shiral> I like hearing good bagpipes; I wouldn't want to be around a bagpiper who was learning HOW to do it
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:27:47] <Elim> I enjoy bag pipe music if it is poorly played if I am trying to annoy the neighbors.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:27:54] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:28:05] <KK> I remember the Millennium celebrations in Edinburgh, where they were aiming for 1000 pipers, and very nearly got that many. Had to have them march in separate groups, because that many couldn't all play together, the speed of cound being what it is.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:28:10] <kirienne> none of my SCA garb is wool although I wish I had some, for the camping events when it is cold at night
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:28:20] <KK> sound
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:28:44] <Evie> Wow. 1000 pipers. That would rock. :-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:28:58] <kirienne> it sure would
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:29:13] <AnnieUK> that would be seriously loud!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:29:28] <DesertRose> Yeah, it would.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:30:30] <the_Bee> One lone piper might create a more sentimental mood.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:31:10] <KK> Then we drove up to Toronto for a friend's 80th birthday party, and saw Niagra Falls on the way back. Also saw the Golden Palace, just outside Wheeling, WV, which was built to be the residence for the founder of the Kare Krishna movement. He died before it could be finished, but the temple there has become a pilgrimage destination for local Indian devotees.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:31:11] <Shiral> I wonder if Dhugal ever arranged some Highland Games up in Cassan....?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:31:16] <kirienne> yes, but I love the sound of massed bands :-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:31:19] <AnnieUK> the pipe major's father was also a piper and on VJ day he piped in the village square because a lot of the Scots regiments were in Burma etc
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:31:39] <Shiral> YOu have had a busy spring, KK
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:31:44] <DesertRose> Seriously.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:32:22] <KK> Yep, and the weekend before either of those, I was in the Jacksonvile, FL area for an ordination. Talk about busy....
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:32:27] * Evie imagines Dhugal trying to teach Kelson how to toss a caber, and grins
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:32:29] <kirienne> LOL Shiral,
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:32:31] <DesertRose> GRRR!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:32:35] <DesertRose> I'm in Jacksonville!!!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:32:44] <Shiral> Might be good basis for a Fanfic...
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:32:55] <kirienne> ?me grins at teh same thought
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:32:59] <KK> I don't know if they would have had highland games in Deryniland or not.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:33:03] <the_Bee> I read somewhere that caber-tossing began when they needed to get heavy logs across dep, narrow gullies.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:33:10] <Evie> Don't look at me. I don't know nuthin' 'bout tossin' no caber
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:33:16] <kirienne> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:33:17] <Shiral> Welll... He COULD stage a tournament, anyway
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:33:28] <Shiral> In honor of a Royal visit...
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:33:34] <kirienne> ooohhh, that I would love to see
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:33:42] <KK> If the heavy fighters can do it, I don't see why they couldn't do them in the borders.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:34:02] <kirienne> :-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:34:24] <Evie> "Games? GAMES? We call it 'fighter practice'!"
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:34:26] <KK> I'm sure they have aarchery tournaments.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:35:03] <the_Bee> and jousting
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:35:22] <KK> In the current book, I have Brion and some of his men working out in the great hall in the winter, to keep in shape--blunted swords and the like.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:35:38] <Shiral> Book news??? My little ears prick up....
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:35:42] <DesertRose> Indoor fighter practice. :)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:35:47] <kirienne> cool
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:35:51] * Evie sighs wistfully, waiting for the next book
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:35:56] <KK> Exactly, DesertRose.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:35:59] <AnnieUK> and how's my favourite Duke shaping up?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:36:03] <the_Bee> Yes--it would be embarrassing to kill one of your own men in practice.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:36:36] <AnnieUK> and Evie's favourite Bishop-to-be ;)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:36:38] <KK> He's started to make a few friends at court--cautiously.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:36:39] <kirienne> LOL Bee
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:36:42] <Evie> Real armor, fake swords....practices work best that way
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:36:42] <DesertRose> We do indoor fighter practice in Trimaris too, but it's to get out of the heat, not to get out of the cold. :)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:36:42] <Shiral> You gotta roll with the punches if you're a knight. I imagine they get dented now and then!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:37:17] <KK> Yep.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:37:25] * Evie grins at Annie. "Duncan's already a bishop."
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:37:28] <the_Bee> What's Trimaris?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:37:34] <DesertRose> Florida, in SCA parlance.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:37:39] <AnnieUK> not in Childe Morgan III he's not ;)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:37:59] <Shiral> Well in CMIII he's underage. =o)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:01] <KK> Nope, he's only 8 years old right now.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:13] <Evie> "Aren't you a little short to be a s/t/o/r/m/t/r/ bishop?"
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:18] <AnnieUK> lol
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:18] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:30] <the_Bee> no bishophric in sight for duncan in the Chile Morgan trilogy.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:34] <KK> I've just about ready to do the arm-breaking incident.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:36] <BalancettheEnergies> :D
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:38] <Shiral> Altar boy, maybe!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:44] <kirienne> Here in The West, we just had our Crown Tournament this weekend, (I was unable to go because of finances)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:55] <KK> Who won?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:38:57] <BalancettheEnergies> Ah, yes, and his chat with bethane.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:39:11] <kirienne> Titus, fighting for Arianwen
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:39:16] <AnnieUK> Is there a working-title (any title?) for the book yet, KK?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:39:24] <KK> Yes, but told from Alaric's POV.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:39:30] <kirienne> This will be his 3rd time on the throne, and her first
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:39:41] <Shiral> Would Alaric's being an incipient Healer helped his own body to heal, even if Alaric were unaware of that on any conscious level?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:39:43] <KK> Just Childe III; I'm still thinking on a proper title.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:40:14] <KK> I doubt it. He's just coming to grips with Truth-Reading, and maybe blocking pain.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:40:22] * kirienne can hardly wait to read more about Alaric :-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:40:35] <KK> And he's discovered he's good with animals.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:40:39] * AnnieUK can't wait either
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:41:55] <KK> Anybody else get caught up in the Swedish wedding celebrations yesterday? I found a spot where the Swedish TV was streaming; all in Swedish, of course, but lots of tiaras to look at!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:41:57] <Shiral> It's just that I picture Alaric getting to court with his arm already well healed after a serious break, and some royal physician wondering how it is that Alaric has recovered so well, that soon
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:42:14] <KK> Ah, we aren't there yet.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:42:22] <Shiral> Didn't know anybody important had got married in Sweden until now
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:42:39] <kirienne> I read about the wedding in the paper, but haven't looked for it online
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:42:44] <KK> Just the Crown Princess and her true love of 8 years, who is now Prince Daniel.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:00] <the_Bee> The Princess and the Commoner
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:14] <AnnieUK> still rumours over here about Prince William announcing an engagement soon
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:14] <Shiral> I'm seriously behind on Royalty-watch...
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:17] <DesertRose> Wow. I hadn't been paying attention to that either.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:25] <BalancettheEnergies> I read of the the dissent over the giving the bride away business.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:30] <KK> I was impressed by his speech at the banquet, part in very fluent English and part in Swedish.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:33] <Evie> He's finally (maybe) marrying Kate?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:50] <the_Bee> remind me--Kate who?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:52] <AnnieUK> apparently, yes, we are to have a Princess Kate soon
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:43:52] <KK> Rumor has it that she's moved in with him in Wales in the last week or so.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:44:01] <KK> Kate Middleton.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:44:13] <KK> Princess Catherine, plase!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:44:40] <kirienne> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:44:42] <KK> His sweetheart from St. Andrew's days.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:44:44] <BalancettheEnergies> Tabloid in the grocery checkout lane had her already enciente.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:44:56] <KK> That rumor has been scotched.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:45:30] <Shiral> Anything printed in a Tabloid, I automatically assume it's probably not true
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:45:41] <Evie> If I disappear suddenly, it's because I have a cat trying to help me type
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:45:47] <kirienne> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:45:52] <KK> And Harry and Chelsey have apparently split for good; she's homesick for Africa and is moving back there.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:45:55] <AnnieUK> mine is still curled up asleep here
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:00] <BalancettheEnergies> As do I. I hope they can be happy, but it will not be easy.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:02] <the_Bee> Hello Evie's kitty
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:16] <KK> What's Evie's kitty's name?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:21] <Evie> His name's Luke. As in Skywalker, because he's a whiny baby.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:27] <AnnieUK> rofl
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:28] <KK> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:29] <kirienne> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:38] <BalancettheEnergies> :D LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:38] <KK> What color?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:42] <Shiral> My girl is curled up asleep on the bed, having realized she's not getting fed yet
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:56] <KK> Which one, Shiral?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:46:58] <Evie> My other is Gigi. Short for Giraffe Giraffe Pickle Sophronia Annabeth. We're not normal, my family.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:47:02] <the_Bee> My neighbor's cat is asleep on my bed. Melantha's somewhere out of sight.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:47:03] <Shiral> Francesca
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:47:13] <Evie> Luke's an orange tabby. Gigi is brown/gray tabby
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:47:37] <DesertRose> PJ is ripping and tearing through the house, but here shortly I expect her to show up and try to steal my tea again.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:47:43] <KK> Somehow I knew that Luke would be orange. I have 3, most of them whiny.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:48:16] <DesertRose> Tessa is orange, and she's not whiny. Talkative, but not whiny.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:48:16] <KK> And Gus is very athletic; would make a good Jedi.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:48:18] <Evie> It's his birthday, sort of. He showed up the day before Father's Day 3 years ago and gave himself to my husband
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:48:45] <kirienne> how cute, he made a present of himself
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:48:49] <BalancettheEnergies> Wimsey and Morshi have decided to share the bed, for now. :/
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:48:50] <Evie> Pre-neutered, even, and wearing a collar that was almost too small. he'd been lost or abandoned
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:49:06] <KK> Awwwww.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:49:13] <KK> Knew where to come, though.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:49:33] <Shiral> Cats seem to know how to find soft-hearted people
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:49:39] <Evie> Showed up at my m-i-l's house in the middle of freakin' nowhere
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:49:41] <DesertRose> PJ certainly did.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:50:08] <Evie> walked right in her door and up to my husband, meowing "FEED ME!"
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:50:21] <DesertRose> My daughter and her best friend found that silly kitten in the middle of the road, and they couldn't just leave her there. Now she's been to the vet and we'll probably be having her spayed soon.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:50:22] <Evie> So we did
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:50:25] <kirienne> ROTFL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:50:34] <KK> And he did.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:51:07] <Evie> Oh lordy, at least they found a kitten. MY kids found a newborn mouse in the parking lot. Guess who ended up syringe feeding a mouse for 9 days? *sigh*
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:51:30] <Evie> I don't even LIKE mice!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:51:43] <Shiral> That's duty above and beyond the call
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:51:46] <kirienne> lol
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:51:53] <kirienne> yes it is
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:51:55] <KK> How did they even find a newborn mouse; they're about the size of a large jellybean, and hairless--or was it a bit older?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:51:58] <Shiral> Or else it's insanity
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:52:10] <Evie> No, they saw it being born, then the mom freaked and ran off
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:52:16] <DesertRose> I'm not a mouse fan either. I used to have hamsters and my daughter took the class gerbil home for summer vacation and it just stayed in my parents' house until it died of old age.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:52:19] <KK> Wow.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:52:28] <Evie> Since there was a group of kids gaping at it. I'd have run in mid birthing too. :-D
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:52:42] <the_Bee> My mother once fed a newborn kitten from a doll's baby-bottle. The mother gave birth, then forgot about it. Next day she heard the kitten mewilng, siad "Oh my gosh I fogot' and proceeded to have 4 more.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:52:48] <AnnieUK> we have psycho hamster living in our house
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:52:58] <KK> I worked in a mouse colony one summer--no, not Disney Studios--and learned all about them. Our mice were for cancer research.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:53:09] <AnnieUK> she can escape from anything you care to put her in
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:53:17] <Shiral> Psycho Hamster--Pets Gone Wild!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:53:29] <KK> When Hamsters Attack.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:53:35] <AnnieUK> she has got out of more hamster houses than I care to recall
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:53:40] <Shiral> You're ankle deep in Trouble!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:53:46] <AnnieUK> she is currently in an aquarium
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:53:54] <Evie> My kids wanted to keep ours. Our local wildlife refuge wouldn't take it. There I was, looking at mouse forums online, trying to find an adopter
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:03] <AnnieUK> with two planks of wood and a heavy weight on the top
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:17] <Shiral> Annie, she's probably thinking "You think this old tin can can hold ME??"
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:25] <AnnieUK> yup
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:31] <the_Bee> has she started chewing on the plank yet?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:38] <AnnieUK> she has shifted the two planks of wood before now
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:38] <BalancettheEnergies> any luck, Evie?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:44] <AnnieUK> hence the heavy weight
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:45] <Evie> Luke, as you can imagine, was VERY interested in the new "baby"
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:51] <DesertRose> Oh brother.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:53] <Shiral> But that sounds like a psycho Hamster all right
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:54:56] <kirienne> I bethe was
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:55:13] <the_Bee> YUM! hors d'oevres
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:55:14] <Evie> No, "Baby" aspirated too much milk and ended up dying, but I was able to keep him alive 9 days
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:55:30] <Evie> It's really hard to feed a baby mouse. you have to use a mini syringe and pipette
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:55:31] <KK> Back in Ireland, our cats were constantly bringing in mice from outside and playing with them until they broke--though some did escape. I rescued many a mouse, if it wasn't too damaged.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:55:51] <Shiral> I recall they also brought you presents of Bats
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:56:16] <the_Bee> That's how momcatas teach their kittens to hunt--by bringing home live critters.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:56:23] <KK> Yep. And occasionally rats, though always dead and never eaten, and usually left just outside the cat flap. They really hate rats.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:56:41] <Evie> Ack! I'd worry that a bat that could be caught would be a sick bat.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:56:53] <KK> Here, chipmunks are a favorite snack, and baby rabbits.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:57:08] <BalancettheEnergies> Still, they have to show off to their humans.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:57:09] <DesertRose> Rats are ugly.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:57:14] <DesertRose> At least mice are semi-cute.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:57:35] <KK> No, they can scoop the bats out of the air at dusk, when they're flying low to scoop up insects. I tried to tell them to lay off, that bats are protected. Not from cats, they said....
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:57:36] <Shiral> Cute but stupid little furry things= cat toys
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:57:38] <Evie> Our former cat liked to leave us mouse trophies. We'd find mouse heads offered up for our approval
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:57:42] <the_Bee> speaking of cats and rats, have any of you read Beatrix Potter's "The Story of Tom Kitten"?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:57:56] <Shiral> Oh yeah
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:57:58] <DesertRose> Years ago. The last time I read it was when my daughter was of an age.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:58:03] <KK> Ah, yes, mousie faces, with the whiskers displayed.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:58:14] <DesertRose> The same daughter who is now 17 and bringing home random kittens from roadsides.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:58:25] <KK> Bats are like mini-mice with wings, very very soft.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:58:28] <the_Bee> and the rats try to coook him up in a roly-poly.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:58:43] <Shiral> That's The Roly Poly Pudding, actually
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:59:05] <the_Bee> I saw a cartoon version on TV
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:59:06] <Shiral> Tom Kitten is when Tom and his sisters are turned out to play in the garden while wearing fancy clothes
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:59:17] <DesertRose> Shiral, have you ever seen the book French for Cats?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:59:23] <Shiral> Which end up being worn by puddle Ducks
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:59:28] <Shiral> Oh yeah, DR. =o)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:59:41] <DesertRose> My mom gave it to me when I took French in high school.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:59:42] <Evie> French for Cats? Sounds like a book I need.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:59:45] <Shiral> "Ou voulez vous que je ce mette ca?"
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [19:59:50] <DesertRose> It's hilarious.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:00:04] <Shiral> "Where would you like me to put this small dead rodent?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:00:09] <DesertRose> There's a passage in there about cute but stupid little furry things.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:00:18] <Shiral> Yuppers!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:00:31] <KK> I'll have to look for that one!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:00:38] <Evie> Gigi was born with a bobtail. She loves to play with anything that's furry and even remotely tail-like
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:00:40] <Shiral> The author is Henry Beard, KK
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:00:51] <Evie> She'll come running up with it, mewing frantically as if wanting it reattached
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:00:53] <DesertRose> Henri de la Barbe, on the book cover.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:01:01] <Shiral> Mais oui
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:01:35] <Evie> Name sounds familiar. Did he also do a Latin book or two?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:01:38] <the_Bee> Then there's Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats by TS Eliot(?)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:01:52] <DesertRose> http://www.amazon.com/French-Cats-Your-Will-Ever/dp/067940676X/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1277078490&sr=1-1
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:02] <KK> Ah, yes, much of which ended up in the musical.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:08] <DesertRose> There's the Amazon link for French for Cats.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:30] <AnnieUK> sorry chaps and chapesses, but I have to be up for work in 6 hours, so I'm going to turn in
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:33] <DesertRose> Apparently there's an Advanced French for Exceptional Cats.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:35] <AnnieUK> night all!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:38] <Shiral> Night, Annie
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:41] <Evie> Goodnight, Annie!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:46] <the_Bee> nighters, annie
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:47] <KK> Nighters, Annie. Sleep well.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:48] <kirienne> Night night Annie
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:49] Quit AnnieUK has left this server (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client).
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:02:55] <BalancettheEnergies> Good night, Annie.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:03:10] <DesertRose> Darn, missed her, fooling around with Amazon.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:03:25] <DesertRose> But yes, Evie, he did one called Latin for All Occasions.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:03:32] <Evie> I wonder what the formal form of address is for a chap or a chapess? ;-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:03:33] <jojo> any movie news?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:03:35] <BalancettheEnergies> I type too slowly myself.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:03:40] <Shiral> Save fooling around with Amazons for the Highland Games, DR =o)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:03:45] <Evie> "Your Chapness"?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:03:55] <KK> No new movie news. I assume no news is good news.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:04:07] <Shiral> Keeping all available digits crossed
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:04:13] <kirienne> me too
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:04:19] <Evie> I was cautiously elated to find out there was a movie in the works
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:04:36] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:04:56] <Evie> Well, I've seen what Hollywood's done to books before. Hence the caution.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:05:06] <KK> That's a good way to be. Still many chances for slips betwixt....
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:05:08] <Kelric> groan
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:05:08] <Evie> But they sometimes get it right
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:05:25] <DesertRose> Sometimes. *crosses fingers*
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:05:28] <BalancettheEnergies> Afraid I let my brain go, speculation-wise, on the casting thread and elsewhere.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:05:29] <KK> Just remember that it will chance in translation from text to film, and you won't be disappointed.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:05:32] <Shiral> Let's hope for minimum slippage, since things have progressed this far
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:05:33] <Evie> and if they get it wrong, i can do what I do with the SW prequels and watch with the sound off. ;-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:06:13] <BalancettheEnergies> Yes, we were discussing frank Herbert's Dune earlier...
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:06:30] <DesertRose> You had some really good ideas, BalancettheEnergies.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:06:35] <KK> Well, they've somewhat changed/simplified the magic system, but the costumes and such should be lovely, with any luck.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:06:53] <BalancettheEnergies> Forgive me whilst i blush.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:07:02] <KK> More recent versions of Dune haven't been too bac.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:07:04] <KK> bad
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:07:06] <Evie> as long as they don't mangle the characterizations too badly, I'm happy
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:07:25] <the_Bee> Memo to bookhunters : http://forums.abebooks.com/abesleuthcom is a place for locating boos when you can't recall the title or author. Just post whatever you can remember and people will try to help.. You have to join, but it's free.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:07:33] <Shiral> I hope all the characters are allowed to remain true to themselves
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:07:39] <BalancettheEnergies> I suggested that the amount of detail makes dune a better fit for the miniseries, rather than theatrical film.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:08:35] <Evie> Yes, if they turn Alaric into a wishy-washy wimp angsting about his heroic destiny, and Duncan into a womanizer, I'll ask for my ticket price back. :-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:08:39] <the_Bee> boos and books
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:08:58] <Evie> (I've seen adaptations about that bad!)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:09:08] * Shiral can't get my mind wrapped around even the possibility of Duncan as a womanizer... =o)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:09:26] <Evie> yeah, boggles the mind, huh?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:09:31] <KK> They won't do that. But they've made Kelson more of a wimp at first, under Jehana's thumb, and Alaric must teaching him his destiny. It works, even if it isn't the way I originally envisioned.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:09:34] * kirienne can't imagaine a whiny Alaric Morgan
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:09:47] <the_Bee> The movie version of My Friend Flicka turned Ken's big brother into a little sister.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:10:36] <Shiral> Well... Kelson has time to grow out of it. =o) And a thirteen year old who's just lost his father would naturally turn to the parent he still has
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:11:07] <Evie> I'm not too surprised about Kelson. It's like Peter in TL,TW&TW being more self-doubting in the movie than in the book. Also Aragorn in LOTR. It seems to be a Hollywood trope...to be a leader, one must angst. :-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:11:30] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:11:30] <the_Bee> or do you mean before his father died--pre-DR, KK?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:11:36] <BalancettheEnergies> True, and as a queen, Jehana has more power than most mothers.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:12:05] <Shiral> So... if Kelson is more under Jehana's thumb though.... who sends for Morgan after Brion's death?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:12:26] <BalancettheEnergies> Nigel, I should think.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:12:30] <KK> Nope, after, Bee.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:12:45] <the_Bee> Yes, BtE
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:08] <Evie> Are they anywhere near casting the movie yet? (resists urge to play on Morphthing website some more)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:18] * Bynw peeks in
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:32] * Evie waves at Bynw
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:33] <DesertRose> You've been missing some lively chat, Bynw.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:38] <the_Bee> hiyas Bynw
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:45] <Shiral> Hiyas Bro
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:46] * Bynw has been moving to his new apt and has been very busy getting ready for his wedding on saturday
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:47] <kirienne> Hi Bywn, comgrats on your upcoming marriage
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:57] <Evie> Congrats!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:13:59] <BalancettheEnergies> yes, the casting thread has had some new life with AnnieUK and others of late.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:14:01] <kirienne> congrats even
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:14:06] <the_Bee> no cold feet yet? ;)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:14:17] <Shiral> Congrats, Bynw
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:14:25] <kirienne> congrats on the new apartment too
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:14:30] <Bynw> thanks
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:14:34] <BalancettheEnergies> Best wishes Bynw
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:14:38] <KK> Congrats, Bynw.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:14:47] <the_Bee> best wishes
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:15:00] <Evie> Yes, and we're creating pictures of actors who don't even exist too, KK. For the director's imaginary cut of the movie, I guess. :-D
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:15:20] <kirienne> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:15:33] <Evie> Coming out later on invisible DVD
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:15:39] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:16:02] <KK> Sounds fascinating.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:16:14] <the_Bee> with a ghost-written script
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:16:19] <Shiral> It's a big time suck, but fun. As are most time sucks=o)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:16:46] <KK> Did anybody watch the new V series? The kid who plays the FBI agent's son is fairly Kelsonian, if he can play a period character.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:16:46] <Evie> I apologize for posting the link to Morphthing. No, on second thought, I don't. ;-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:16:47] <Shiral> No real solid performances though
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:17:11] <Evie> ooh, I saw it! But I don't remember what he looked like, so i'll need to look up pictures
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:17:31] * Shiral swats Evie with a trout
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:17:47] * Evie backhands Shiral with a mackerel
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:17:53] <BalancettheEnergies> I'll look for it on Hulu. My TV doesn't work.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:18:00] <KK> Good looking kid, dark hair, fairly heroic, if somewhat clueless in the series. Unfortunately, I think the series was not renewed.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:18:29] <Shiral> Kelson does have to grow up rather abruptly
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:18:35] <Evie> I guess i'll be looking for him on IMDB in a bit
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:18:39] <DesertRose> The problem is, dark haired people tend to have dark eyes. It's hard to find someone with black hair and gray eyes.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:18:39] <kirienne> he sure des
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:18:53] <Evie> Contact lenses. They work with brown eyes now
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:19:04] <DesertRose> True, assuming you can tolerate the silly things. :)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:19:06] <Shiral> That's why I've been having fun with Photoshop
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:19:22] <Evie> Yes, but it's hard to photoshop actors' actual eyes.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:19:30] <BalancettheEnergies> Yeah, if contacts don't work, call the techies.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:19:31] <KK> We need someone with black Irish coloring, the jet black hair with fair skin and light eyes.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:19:32] <Shiral> yes
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:19:42] <DesertRose> Yes, exactly.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:15] <Shiral> Well, actually, you need several, since you've got Nigel, too
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:16] <Evie> I had a raging crush on Kelson first time I read the books. now, being old enough to be his mom, I'm more inclined to want to feed him milk and cookies.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:19] Join fudgebob has joined this channel (~fudgebob@A6D346.387974.9456AD.B6D4EC).
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:21] <DesertRose> I always wanted green eyes, but mine are dark brown, and I can't tolerate contact lenses for very long unless I'm outside.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:24] <DesertRose> Hiyas fudgebob.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:34] <the_Bee> hi fudgebob
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:44] <Shiral> Hi Fudgebob
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:44] <kirienne> hi fudgebob
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:45] <KK> Curious, how does being outside help with contacts?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:45] <BalancettheEnergies> Hello fudgebob
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:46] * Evie waves at fudgebob
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:50] <DesertRose> Air conditioning dries my eyes out.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:20:56] <KK> Ah.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:21:03] <DesertRose> Being outside means no A/C, which means my eyes stay moist.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:21:33] <DesertRose> So once I have the dosh to go to SCA events again, I'll probably get contacts for eventing, but not for everyday use.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:21:44] <Evie> My eyes are also dark brown, but I had blue-green contacts when they first came out. I loved them.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:21:44] <Shiral> I remember being in Florida in August 5 years ago--thought I'd melt!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:21:44] <the_Bee> I tid contacts once, for two years. That was before soft contacts were invented, but Ididn't like even the soft lenses.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:22:04] <the_Bee> tried
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:22:24] <DesertRose> My eyes itch with them in if I'm inside in the A/C.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:22:31] <fudgebob> good morning all :)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:23:05] <KK> I wore hard lenses for many years, but started to get a double vision problem that lenses couldn't correct. I accepted glasses long ago. Wore lenses when I was in the SCA, but always took the glasses along, in case I had to ditch the lenses.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:23:33] * Evie reads "good morning" and thinks "You ain't from around here!" in the thick Alabama accent she doesn't have.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:23:37] <DesertRose> I didn't even need glasses until I was 18, but now I can't do without them.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:23:44] <Shiral> Allergies sometimes make my eyes itcch and water. Haven't dared try contact lenses
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:23:54] <kirienne> same here Shiral
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:23:56] * fudgebob is from the Philippines, Evie
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:24:05] <Evie> I'm half Filipina. :-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:24:23] <fudgebob> wow! nice! cool! :)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:24:30] <Evie> My mom is visiting this week, in fact. I've been gorging on pancit, lumpia, hoping for adobo soon.... ;-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:24:34] <KK> Wow, we're going around the world tonight.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:24:39] <DesertRose> Seriously.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:24:46] <KK> Evie, where do you live?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:24:52] <BalancettheEnergies> I tried hard ones myself and couldn't keep the callouses, then discovered i am sensitive to light. No point, really, when i need tint even indoors.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:24:57] <Evie> Just outside of Birmingham, Alabama
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:25:10] <Evie> But I'm a Navy brat originally, so not from here
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:25:12] <DesertRose> I used to live in Huntsville, Evie.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:25:21] <KK> Ah. What brought you there?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:25:22] <Evie> Just up the road then
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:25:26] <DesertRose> Yup.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:25:38] <Evie> University. Came here half a lifetime ago and never left
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:25:57] <Evie> My dad retired and bought a farm in northeast AL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:26:03] <Evie> though he and Mom live in TX now
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:26:39] <the_Bee> who works the farm--you and hubby?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:26:45] <DesertRose> Where in TX?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:27:08] <KK> What's the quote about Texas? If I owned hell and I owned Texas, I'd live in hell and rent out Texas. Hot!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:27:13] <Evie> We sold it years ago. My dad did some homesteading for several years, with his parents, but they sold it when his folks were old enough to want to retire.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:27:15] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:27:26] <Evie> And my parents live in McAllen, near the border
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:27:30] <DesertRose> Oh, okay.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:28:14] <Evie> My parents insist TX isn't bad because "it's a dry heat." I told them so's an oven, but I don't want to live in one.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:28:16] <jojo> That's a "fur piece" from me...
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:28:25] <kirienne> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:28:29] <KK> I'm with ya, Evie!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:28:32] <DesertRose> I lived in Arizona when I was a kid. Don't talk to me about dry heat.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:28:34] <DesertRose> :)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:28:36] <Shiral> Evie, I wouldn't either! =o)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:28:36] <jojo> and it's a sauna where I am!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:02] <DesertRose> Actually, I'd rather be in 105 degree weather in Arizona than 95 degree weather in Florida.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:11] <Evie> speaking of TX....KK, were you at the SCA 25th Year Celebration in Burnet, TX years ago? I keep thinking I've seen you in person somewhere aside from DragonCon, but I have no clue where.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:18] <DesertRose> Unfortunately, I'm stuck in Florida for now.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:19] <KK> I remember visiting Palm Springs one time. Talk about dry heat. It was about 110 F.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:31] <Shiral> I wouldn't be able to tolerate summer in the east--I can handle heat, but not humidity
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:38] <DesertRose> Yeah, I lived in Phoenix when I was a kid. It would get up near 120 sometimes.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:39] <Evie> I was born in FL, but left at age 3. My husband is native Miamian
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:42] <KK> Evie, yes! I was camping with Simonn and Tessa.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:47] <Evie> 3rd generation native Miamian
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:57] <Evie> OK, THAT'S where I've seen you!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:57] <DesertRose> I'm in Jacksonville, not a native.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:58] <Shiral> But when it's 110, the only place I can be happy is neck deep in cool water
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:29:58] <KK> And I, too, am a native Miamian.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:30:18] <KK> Born during a hurricane.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:30:23] <DesertRose> Born in Arizona, raised between Charleston, SC, and various parts of AZ, and now I live in FL.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:30:40] <Evie> During a hurricane...wow
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:30:46] <Shiral> She blew in
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:30:56] <KK> Too hot in Florida. Don't know how I put up with it for so long. left in 1968.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:31:03] <DesertRose> Surprised her parents didn't name her Tempest instead of Katherine. :)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:31:21] <DesertRose> You were used to the heat, that's all.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:31:30] <Evie> Oh! While I'm thinking of it....in Meridies, the proper address for an Earl/Countess is "Your Excellency," but is it the same in Gwynedd? Or is it just "my Lord/Lady"?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:31:32] <KK> Yeah, they were telling my poor mother to hurry up and have that baby, because they were expecting to lose power.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:31:37] <kirienne> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:31:38] <Shiral> I've only spent one week in Florida in my life. The next time I visit my brother and SIL, I'm NOT going there in August!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:31:41] <DesertRose> Oh brother.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:31:52] <DesertRose> No, don't come here in August if you don't want to live in a sauna.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:31:53] <the_Bee> I don'tthink unusual names were in fashion when KK and I were born.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:32:04] <DesertRose> No, probably not. I was just being a smart aleck.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:32:05] <Shiral> Ummm.. how can anybody hurry that process??=
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:32:18] <KK> In Gwynedd, an earl/countess is just my lord or my lady.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:32:36] <DesertRose> Shiral, come visit in December or January.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:32:46] <Shiral> That sounds a lot smarter, DR
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:32:56] <KK> Nope, they didn't name hurricanes back in the dark ages!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:33:05] <Shiral> Although Tallahassee at that time of year is even colder than California
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:33:14] <DesertRose> February is when it gets "cold" by Floridian standards, but December and January are usually mild. It's when we finally lose all the leaves off the trees.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:33:16] <Evie> Or himmicanes either
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:33:16] <the_Bee> How come an earl's wife isn't called an earless?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:33:43] <Evie> Earl and Count are equivalent titles
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:06] <the_Bee> ?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:06] <Shiral> It may be just me, but I think "Countess" Sounds more dignified than Earless.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:06] <Evie> etymology for "earl" comes from "jarl," I think?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:10] <DesertRose> Yes.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:13] <KK> Earl comes from eorl, or some Anglo-Saxon term that I've probably misspelled. Count and countess are actually continental usage.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:35] <the_Bee> le Comte et la comtesse
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:36] <Evie> eorl is correct. (took Old English in grad school)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:36] <KK> I dont think there was a female equivalent of Jarl.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:47] <DesertRose> I'm not sure there was either.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:48] <Shiral> They use "Count" in Torenth, don't they?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:53] <KK> Yes.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:34:56] <DesertRose> Yes, because Matyas is a count.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:35:12] <Evie> I quite like Matyas
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:35:23] <KK> Matyas turned out to be a cool character.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:35:23] <DesertRose> KK, would you flip if people wrote a fanfic well into the future?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:35:27] <DesertRose> I like Matyas too.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:35:34] <DesertRose> Like 14th C?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:35:52] <the_Bee> hasn't someone done that?
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:36:04] <KK> If they have, I don't think I've seen it.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:36:05] <the_Bee> closer to our time, anyway
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:36:26] <Shiral> "Deryni In Space"???
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:36:27] <DesertRose> Festil and I are working on one, because the Great Fire of Rhemuth piqued my interest; that's my period in the SCA and my period of special interest in history.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:36:47] <KK> Actually, someone did do something set in the equivalent of modern times, as I recall. Don't recall details at this removed, though.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:37:06] <Shiral> I think that was Marion Moebus/Snuffybear
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:37:21] <Shiral> I think it's in one of the DATZ issues
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:37:22] <DesertRose> We're playing with a Deryni equivalent of the Peasants' Revolt of 1381 as causing the Great Fire of Rhemuth, listed in Codex as occuring in 1366.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:37:33] <Evie> Oh, cool!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:37:44] <KK> Alas, I haven't had time to keep up with what's going on in fanfic. I wish Martine were still writing.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:38:11] <Evie> Although I read that bit in the Codex and went "Noooooo, all that remarkable architecture and literature LOST!!!" :-D
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:38:16] <KK> Actually, I want to read more of her Rakovia universe.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:38:18] <the_Bee> I'm working on setting my poems to music.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:38:20] <DesertRose> KK, I don't know if you get time to look at the message boards at RhemuthCastle.com, but the fanfic archive has quite taken off.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:38:29] <kirienne> how is Martine? I remember her from long ago chats, but have never seen her here
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:38:37] <KK> No, but I'll have to do that when I get the current book finished.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:38:59] <Evie> I have to admit, I'm horribly neglecting my own first novel manuscript because I've been busy lately writing fanfic in your world, KK. *pout*
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:39:03] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:39:20] <Evie> My own characters are wondering if I don't love them anymore
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:39:31] <DesertRose> Mine ask me that from time to time too.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:39:34] <KK> They bought a new (to them) old house about a year ago, and I haven't heard much from here since then. I know they wre starting to think seriously about starting their family, though I would hope we'd hear if that had actually begun.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:40:11] <kirienne> that would be exciting news
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:40:24] <Evie> I sat down to write a Deryni short story for a friend of mine who, until recently, was the only other person I knew who had read the books. That "short story" turned into 48K words, which is why I sought out the Forum, because I wasn't about to write that much and only have one reader!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:40:56] <KK> I'll have to check that out--when I finish the book!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:40:58] <Evie> "My name is Evie, and I struggle with storytelling addiction...."
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:41:14] <the_Bee> Write, Woman, Write!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:41:29] <Evie> I need to be here about as much as I need to join an AA meeting in a bar. :-)
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:41:36] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:41:49] <kirienne> LOL, the fanfic section is wonderful
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:42:04] <the_Bee> I write poems because I'm too lazy to write anything longer.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:42:24] <DesertRose> I need to pester Festil to get the 1366 story back to me so I can write some more on it.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:42:24] <kirienne> I think my muse has deserted me
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:42:34] <Evie> well, see, we have to write something, because that's how we fill in time between books. So WRITE, dagnabbit! :-D
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:42:49] <KK> Yes, ma'am.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:42:52] <kirienne> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:42:53] <DesertRose> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:42:54] <Evie> LOL
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:43:26] <BalancettheEnergies> Perhaps I should attempt to flesh out my suggestion in that thread (Reply 34, "Stories we'd like to see"), but I am rather a timid sort.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:43:37] <Evie> I'm going through Duncan withdrawal. Even 8 year old Duncan will do. Just stop the shakes, please!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:43:45] <DesertRose> Give it a shot, BalancettheEnergies.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:44:04] <the_Bee> Right now my writing is mostly for an online RPG thread.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:44:14] <Evie> Yes, do! Annie was so shy about posting hers, but it turned out great!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:44:20] <DesertRose> Yeah, most of my creative energy here lately has been going into RPGing.
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:44:47] <KK> Those are all worthy pursuits. The important thing is that you enjoy it!
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:44:48] <Evie> I wish I could do RPG, but the only way I could is if it's not in real time. I can do story based rpg
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:45:17] <BalancettheEnergies> Actually, i should find a better job. Part-time, strung out over six days a week, and low wage rate. :/
[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:45:34] <DesertRose> Ugh. That's no fun.

[Sunday 20 June 2010] [20:46:55] <kirienne> I reasd in hte paper that a lot of companies will not hire folks who do not already have a job, their reasoning is that if people are out of work, they must not be good workers...that is horrible

"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
