[18:06]<fudgebob> well, I'd like an Oscar statuette
[18:06]<jemler> KK!
[18:06]<fudgebob> hi KK :)
[18:06]<jemler> I didn't think anyone would show!
[18:07]<the_Bee> hello KK!
[18:07]<KK> Hello, folks.
[18:07]<the_Bee> so what's new?
[18:07]<KK> Goodness, is everybody b=geting ready for Oscar parties?
[18:07]* jemler sets out hot cocoa with marshmallows
[18:07]<KK> And what do we hear from Bynw?
[18:07]<the_Bee> not I
[18:08]<jemler> I would be, but he's such a grouch! :)
[18:08]<KK> lol
[18:08]<the_Bee> He's lurking somewhere, i SUPPOSE.
[18:08]<KK> Haven't had a chance to check the website lately.  Is it back up?
[18:08]<the_Bee> BRB
[18:09]<jemler> Nope
[18:09]<the_Bee> I was going to check; you saved me the trouble, Jemler.
[18:10]<jemler> I have the link for my browser on the desktop.
[18:11]<the_Bee> I intend to bookmark it if it ever does come back up.
[18:11]<KK> Hmmm, I wonder what the problem is.
[18:11]<the_Bee> bynw's busy?
[18:12]* jojo (Mibbit@DCDEB4.A289C1.C315FF.27A278) has joined #deryni_destinations
[18:12]<the_Bee> howdy jojo
[18:12]<jojo> Hello Bee.
[18:12]<jemler> hi jojo
[18:12]<KK> Hey there, jojo.
[18:13]<jojo> Good evening, KK
[18:14]<jojo> We are finally getting spring.... how about y'all?
[18:14]<KK> Well, I can't stick around too long tonight, but I have good progress to report.  The past three days, the words have just been pouring onto the screen--thanks God!
[18:14]<jojo> GREAT!!!
[18:15]<the_Bee> We're having a 3-day spring in New England; then back to winter.
[18:15]<jemler> make backups! my backup drive went out this morning and I lost a lot of good files.
[18:15]<the_Bee> the screen--movie screen?
[18:15]<KK> We've had sun for the past few days, too.  Spring is definitely starting to peep out.  Snow is melting.
[18:16]<KK> Monitor, Bee.  We're waiting for the Sony meeting--still.
[18:16]<jojo> jemler... backup to optical, too...
[18:16]<jemler> If they don't get on the ball, I'm going to boycott them myself!
[18:17]<jemler> :)
[18:17]<KK> My son has set up our own server here at the house that automatically backs up everything now, and we have another program that synchs the files on both my computers.
[18:17]<jemler> sounds like RAID
[18:17]<jojo> wise!
[18:17]<KK> We also are now wireless throughout the house.
[18:17]<the_Bee> cool!  Ain't it nice to have a computer genius in the house.
[18:17]<KK> Yep.
[18:17]<jemler> I have an external hard drive. when I turned it on this morning it said I have to reformat the drive.
[18:18]<KK> Yike!  Are you backed up somewhere eise?
[18:18]<KK> else
[18:18]<jemler> No.
[18:18]<KK> Ouch!
[18:18]<jojo> Windows xp?
[18:18]<jemler> I copied some files over last night then deleted them from the main unit. Gone. Bye-Bye...
[18:19]<the_Bee> :(
[18:19]<jemler> The external drive doesn't have the os in it. It's only for backup.
[18:20]* the_Bee observes a moment of silence for jemler's lost files.
[18:20]<jojo> yes, but i have seen that message when the OS was the problem, and I could get the data off using get back data utilities....
[18:20]<jojo> sometimes....
[18:20]<jemler> the system won't even see the hard drive
[18:21]<jojo> making a bad sound?
[18:22]<jojo> :s
[18:22]<jemler> no. it just blinks the power light. there are bars on the drive to indicate storage. they are now blank.
[18:23]* jojo sends jemler a virtual second external case to try retrieving the loss....
[18:23]<KK> That sounds really bad, Jemler.
[18:24]<jemler> some of the files are gone for good. the rest are still on my main unit. A few others are on dvds, otherwise...
[18:25]<the_Bee> which ones have you lost?
[18:25]<jemler> a few files i recorded from tv. maybe i can get them back from reruns, if i feel like waiting.
[18:26]<the_Bee> Could you try hulu? or the networks' wevbites?
[18:26]<the_Bee> and websites
[18:26]<KK> Very sad.
[18:28]<jemler> well i could always just buy the series. they are available on Ebay. money is a little tight at the moment.
[18:28]<the_Bee> What series is it?
[18:29]<jemler> MonsterQuest on History Channel.
[18:29]<jojo> At least it wasn't mission critical data....
[18:29]<jemler> THOSE I still have! :)
[18:29]<jojo> Had to break that bad news to an engineer one time.  Took him 6 mounths to recompile the data.
[18:30]<jemler> since most of the data was backup data, and my main system is still intact, that info i can replace.
[18:31]<the_Bee> Hulu has only clips; I just checked.
[18:31]<jojo> :) Wish rhemuthcastle.com could get restored.
[18:31]<the_Bee> so do we all
[18:33]* jojo suggests jemler runs chkdsk xxx: /f /r
[18:34]* fudgebob (~fudgebob@A6D346.387974.5C7C55.A63AB6) has left #deryni_destinations ("Leaving.")
[18:35]<jemler> wth, if the disk is already fried, it won't hurt.
[18:36]* You are now known as Bynw
[18:36]<the_Bee> hi bynw
[18:36]<Bynw> Hi hi
[18:36]<jojo> Howdy Bynw
[18:36]<jemler> hi bynw
[18:36]<KK> He's here!
[18:37]<the_Bee> any progress on the rhemuthcastle site?
[18:37]<Bynw> Yes I'm here
[18:37]<Bynw> have a new host ... all the data is safe ... just need the time to get it back up
[18:37]<the_Bee> good to hear
[18:38]<Bynw> hiyas KK *huggles*
[18:38]<jojo> How are u doing?
[18:38]<Bynw> i'm doing absolutely fantastic
[18:38]<KK> Excellent!  I've got a speaking gig at the Virginia Festival of the Book on Friday, and want to be able to cite it.
[18:39]<KK> I'll tell them that it's been down, and is in the process of going back up--to keep trying.
[18:39]<Bynw> well right now we just have splash page up stating its down right now
[18:40]<the_Bee> Remind us what happened--the old operators/owners/whatevwer closed it down/went out of business?
[18:41]<the_Bee> old host
[18:44]<jemler> and a hush falls over cyberspace....
[18:44]<Bynw> the old host had some kind of trouble, the exact trouble isn't really known ... rumors stated they went out of business, they said they had some technical difficulties ... our theory is they got behind paying their providers
[18:45]* the_Bee does not understand computer-geek-speak.
[18:45]<jojo> ah...thanks for the info...
[18:46]<KK> Ya see, jojo & Jemler understand that talk.
[18:46]<Bynw> we were down for a week or so ... we were able to get our data (so nothing was lost) then had to find a new home for everything
[18:46]<Bynw> uploaded the data to a new home and now just need to go about putting it in the right place
[18:46]* jojo sends Bynw kudos for getting the data back...
[18:46]<Bynw> like moving but everything is still in boxes
[18:47]<KK> >That>, we all understand!
[18:47]<Bynw> see simple
[18:47]<Bynw> i
[18:47]<Bynw> 've got one of my main tech guys working on it but like the rest of us he has a real job too and we all have lives too were things come up
[18:48]<jojo> When it's back up I have a couple of copied chats if you don't Bynw.
[18:51]<Bynw> thanks I dont know for sure I have them all since I haven't been here ... do a lot of things with my GF on Sundays
[18:51]<Bynw> sometimes I forget to sign in to log the chat
[18:51]* Bynw gives channel operator status to jemler jojo KK the_Bee
[18:52]<@jojo> understandable.. glad you've found someone special.
[18:52]<@jemler> the chkdsk stopped at the 4th test of 5.
[18:52]<@the_Bee> *sigh*  all that @power and I can't think of anyting to do with it.
[18:52]<@the_Bee> or anything
[18:52]<Bynw> you could kick us all out of the chat bee
[18:53]<@jemler> Power corrupts...
[18:53]<@the_Bee> only if i were being verra verra evil
[18:53]<@jojo> 4th test takes a long time....
[18:53]<@jemler> it hasn't moved from 0 yet
[18:54]<Bynw> why are running a chkdsk
[18:54]<@jojo> jemler's external drive crashed.
[18:54]<@jemler> lost all the data on it
[18:54]<Bynw> ack
[18:55]<KK> Ack, indeeed.
[18:55]<@jojo> trying to think of a deryni 4th test...
[18:56]<@jemler> DEryni pricker with merasha?
[18:56]<@the_Bee> What are the first three?
[18:56]<Bynw> I'm gonna be doing some hardware upgrades on my own desktop computer here ... new harddrive, a dvd burner, video card ...
[19:00]<KK> I got a DVD burner, cannibalized from another dell that Cameron scrounged.  He was gonna turn that computer into...something, but it appears that its mother board may be fried, so he'll just cannibalize it for parts for my machine.
[19:02]<KK> Not sure what one uses a DVD burner for, as opposed to a CD burner.  Movies? But you gotta get them from somewhere.  Can anyone tell that Katherine is a luddite, when it comes to computers?
[19:02]<Bynw> whatever works :o) i dont have any spare parts around so i will have to probably buy new
[19:02]<@the_Bee> My computer has something called "roxio burn." i haven't tried it out.
[19:02]<Bynw> KK, dvd's will just hold more data than a CD
[19:02]<@the_Bee> but you can play them both on the same drive?
[19:03]<KK> Cameron keeps telling me I need a new computer, because it's about 4-5 years old, but it's still working fine, and everything is backed up, and we've upgraded it about as far as it will go, memory-wise.  Also, it's European spec, so that apparently makes a difference, not necessarily a good difference.  But it works, hey.
[19:03]<Bynw> most cd's are like 700mb or so ... while most dvd's are 4gb or so ... that would be 5x as much data
[19:04]<KK> Good point.  I guess it's good to have, then.
[19:04]<@jojo> and dvd burner will play a comercial dvd
[19:04]<Bynw> Bee, you can play CD's in DVD drive
[19:04]<@the_Bee> good.  I don't want to lose my music.
[19:04]<KK> I also have a--gasp--3 1/2 inch drive in this machine, though most of the things I have stored on that size disk is slowly deteriorating.
[19:05]<@jemler> you can create cds on a dvd burner and play them too. to make dvd movies you need the right software. i use nreo to burn cd/dvds. a blu-ray requires a blu-ray drive, and at $25 per disc, very expensive.
[19:05]<Bynw> those are ancient now KK
[19:05]<@the_Bee> so am I
[19:05]<KK> I know.  I threw out all the stuff that was stored on 6 inch floppies.  Nothing can read them anymore, even if they were still intact.
[19:06]<Bynw> no one uses 3 1/2 floppies any more ... for things that used to be done on the floppies you use flash drives
[19:06]<@jemler> did you ever use flippy discs?
[19:06]<KK> That's why I've had to have folk scan old manuscripts for me.  And of coure, the first 6 books were written on a correcting Selectric typewriter--gasp!
[19:07]<@jojo> shades of liquid paper
[19:07]<KK> Yep.
[19:07]<KK> Talk about the dark ages.
[19:07]<@the_Bee> and carbon paper
[19:08]<KK> I used that, too, and still have some old carbon-sets tucked away somewhere--though nothing to really use them for, other than, maybe, handwritten notes.
[19:08]<Bynw> carbon paper man that is really ancient
[19:09]<KK> But one of my color printers also scans and copies, so I'm set.  And those are networked to Scott and Cameron, so we're in pretty good shapel
[19:09]<@jemler> one night my sister pulled an lp and put it on the record player. her kids called it a big cd!
[19:09]<@the_Bee> We're a couple of aging baby-boomes, KK and I. :)
[19:09]<@jojo> me too... except my first computer was a slide rule...
[19:10]<@jemler> mine was my fingers! Still works too! :)
[19:11]<KK> On a more serendipitous note, Cameron found some kind of device that will "rip" our PAL CD's from Ireland, so that we can watch them over here.  He insisted that this was a better way than just getting a DVD player that plays PAL.  But this wiill be Scott's main birthday present on Tuesday, so he can watch his old movies that we collected while we were living over there.
[19:12]<@the_Bee> Happy Birthday to Scott!
[19:12]<KK> I had a slide rule.  And I remember when hand-held calculators were nearly the size of a brick!  But I did all my college science courses with a slide rule.
[19:14]<KK> Anyway, I've got to dash.  Hadn't realized I've been here an hour, and I wasn't going to stay long.  Gotta go make dinner.
[19:14]<@jojo> Have a great week!
[19:14]<@the_Bee> At least the big calculators had paper so you could check if you'd forgotten to enter a number.
[19:14]<@the_Bee> nighters, KK.  enjoy your week.
[19:14]<@jemler> night KK, Happy Birthday to Scott!
[19:15]<KK> Thanks!  And I hope to be able to report further astounding progress on the book, now that it's finally moving again.
[19:15]<@jemler> that chkdsk is STILL going!
[19:15]<@the_Bee> Is it past zero?
[19:15]<@jojo> jemler... ran one last week that took 2.5 hours....
[19:15]<Bynw> yeah give scott my birthday greeting since we are both march 9th babies
[19:15]<KK> It's making a list, and checking it twice, gonna find out--wait, that's Christmas.  Ah, well.
[19:15]<@jemler> nope still set to 0
[19:16]<@jemler> a few months too late
[19:16]<KK> That's right.  Happy Birthday, Bynw!  Hope you have a happy one.
[19:16]<Bynw> i have the day off work and spending it with my GF so i'm thinking it will be very good
[19:16]<Bynw> thanks :)
[19:16]<the_Bee> Happy Birthday, Bynw!
[19:16]<@jemler> it's your birthday too? happy birthday!
[19:16]* KK steps onto her Portal, waves good night, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.
[19:17]<Bynw> yeah Tuesday the 9th
[19:17]<Bynw> share it with Scott, and one of my aunts too
[19:17]<KK> It was a good date!  :-)
[19:17]<Bynw> i agree :o)
[19:17]<@jojo> have a really wonderful day...
[19:18]<KK> Bye, all.
[19:18]* KK has quit (Quit: )
