[18:11]* KK (~kkurtz@OWIRCN-37ead2e9.va.comcast.net) has joined #deryni_destinations
[18:11]<TheDeryni> lol
[18:11]<Lurker_Bee> HiKK!
[18:11]<Bynw> Hiyas KK
[18:11]<TheDeryni> Hi Katherine!
[18:11]* Bynw gives channel operator status to KK
[18:11]<KK> Hi, all.
[18:11]<jemler> KK!
[18:11]<TheDeryni> How are you today?
[18:12]* Lurker_Bee is now known as the_Bee
[18:12]<KK> Tired.  I've been working on tax figures all weekend.
[18:12]<TheDeryni> Yuck.
[18:12]<Bynw> icky
[18:12]<the_Bee> I don't expect a refundso no hurry.
[18:13]<KK> Yuck, indeed.  And we're about to have to find a new accountant, because our old one (of more than 30 years) is about to retire.
[18:13]<TheDeryni> Bummer.
[18:14]<KK> Yep.  But at least we didn't have to break in a new one who knew overseas deductions, etc., as when we were living in Ireland.  The timing is not bad.
[18:14]<the_Bee> My dad was an accountant but he's been dead for 16 years.
[18:14]<Elim> Oh, TheDeryni, they were Nighthawks.
[18:14]<TheDeryni> k
[18:14]<jemler> i dunno td, the accountant might not think of retirement as a bummer!
[18:15]<TheDeryni> I meant bummer for Katherine.
[18:15]<jemler> Bee, how much does the IRS say he owes?! :)
[18:15]<the_Bee> I'll never tell! ;)
[18:15]<KK> No, in fact he's taking a bit of early retirement, so he can enjoy retirement while he's still relatively young enough to enjoy it.
[18:16]<Bynw> that's always a plus
[18:16]<TheDeryni> So, I guess no time for the book then, huh?
[18:16]<jemler> a good plan too
[18:16]<KK> Been thinking a lot.  Can't wait to get back to it.
[18:16]<jemler> subtle, td
[18:16]<TheDeryni> Woohoo!
[18:17]<TheDeryni> I can be, jemler
[18:18]<the_Bee> What is Scott doing while you're wrestling with accountants and tax forms, KK?
[18:18]<jemler> i told my mother i had some bad news. seh said "what", i saif i've been thinking!
[18:19]<TheDeryni> That is bad news.
[18:19]<KK> He's working on some projects of his own.
[18:19]<the_Bee> Ah.  Writing projects?
[18:19]<KK> Yep.
[18:19]<jemler> was there ever a third book to the Knights of the Blood?
[18:19]<Bynw> not yet ...
[18:19]<KK> Not yet.  We have some legalities to work out.
[18:19]* Bynw hopes that is one of the projects
[18:20]* TheDeryni nods
[18:20]<jemler> I'd cross my fingers (bad pun) but i type better if i don't do that!
[18:21]<jemler> What ever happened to DesertRose?
[18:22]<the_Bee> !seen DesertRose
[18:22]<TheDeryni> She was on Friday.
[18:23]<the_Bee> Is the !seen function not working?  since when?
[18:23]<jemler> i run virus scans on friday. i don't like to leave anything running.
[18:24]<TheDeryni> Katherine, someone asked on the forums about the braiding Queron had. He wanted to know if it was a square braid, and did you base it on any particular braid?
[18:25]<TheDeryni> DesertRose says hi Katherine/everyone, but she is not able to get online at the moment.
[18:25]<the_Bee> bummer for her and us.
[18:25]* TheDeryni nods
[18:26]<Bynw> yeah
[18:26]<Bynw> poor DR
[18:26]<KK> I think it would be hard to make it square, since hair doesn't conform to a square shape.  It would be a variation on possible four-strand braiding, though.  Must have something else woven into it, to make it uniquely Gabrilite.
[18:27]<KK> And of course, certain prayers would be recited while the braiding is done, which would embue it with certain mystical qualities.
[18:27]<TheDeryni> Okay, cool. He'll appreciate the answer.
[18:28]<jemler> like the ritual for burning the braid. makes sense.
[18:30]<TheDeryni> The forums have had quite a few posts lately. :)
[18:30]<the_Bee> good to know.  time I checked it out again. :)
[18:31]* TheDeryni 's elbow slips off the table in his sleep, his face slams down on the plate of mutton and splatters himself with it. "What the...?"
[18:34]* the_Bee bombards the chatroom with purple projectiles from the planetoit Pluto.
[18:34]<TheDeryni> Katherine, do portals in the Deryni world have to be on/in the floor?
[18:35]<jemler> you thinking they cpould be in the wall?
[18:35]<KK> Where else would they be?  Not being facetioius, but ones does have to stand on it--or sit on it--so it has to be a horizontal surface.
[18:36]<the_Bee> They have to be touching earth or stone, but walls can be made of stone.
[18:36]<TheDeryni> Yes, though they would need to point in the directions. I was thinking they only might have to touch one.
[18:36]<the_Bee> why can't one stand touching a vertical surface?
[18:37]<TheDeryni> That was the question. Or, maybe a portable one? :)
[18:37]<jemler> picture this. you're standing on a portal, jump to a portal which is vertical in a wall. you're standing on the wall, and fall to the floor!
[18:37]<the_Bee> What about that moving tower Portal Camber discovered?
[18:38]<KK> No, I can't envision that.  Seems to me that one has to have a sorface on which to stand or sit.
[18:38]<jemler> only detectable by camber, and moved from corner to corner.
[18:38]<TheDeryni> Ah.
[18:38]<the_Bee> ok.  They're your portals.
[18:38]<KK> The boundaries can be...slid.  But we're still talking about a horizontal surface.
[18:39]<TheDeryni> heh, a stone portal chair. (Outhouse, lol! jk)
[18:39]<the_Bee> Did the garderobe portal have a hole to serve a garderobe's usual function?
[18:39]<jemler> sounds kind of embarassing, td. your version of a portal-potty!?
[18:40]<TheDeryni> I was actually thinking a large staircase.
[18:41]<Bynw> i think that the garderobe portal did function
[18:41]<KK> The usual garderobe looks sort of like a phone booth, with a seat surface across one side.  But there's still room to stand in fromt of the seat--which has a hole for the usual uses.
[18:41]<TheDeryni> A Tardis. :)
[18:41]<the_Bee> ah okay
[18:43]<KK> A staircase wouldn't be good, because they usually are in places that are somewhat sheltered.  But under a stair, where bathrooms are often tucked in old houes, would be a good place for a Portal.
[18:43]<TheDeryni> That comment is Bynw's and Elim's fault, btw. They got me hooked on Dr. Who.
[18:43]<TheDeryni> :)
[18:43]<Elim> Where are you now?
[18:43]<TheDeryni> Okay.
[18:43]<TheDeryni> The kittycat nuns.
[18:44]<the_Bee> ?
[18:44]<Elim> Gridlock?
[18:44]<TheDeryni> Sorry. Some other time. It's Deryni time. Woohoo!
[18:45]<jemler> KK, have you ever heard of Gwynedd, Pa?
[18:46]<KK> No, but it wouldn't surprise me if that name was used.  It's also the name for a part of Wales, and a number of Welsh immigrants settled in that area.
[18:47]<Bynw> Gwynedd is an ancient Welsh kingdom wasnt it (IIRC)
[18:47]<jemler> It's northwest of philly, along with North Wales, Gwynedd Square, and Lower Gwynedd. I found it on Goole Earth.
[18:47]<jemler> Google Earth, sorry.
[18:48]<TheDeryni> Kinda like how Ireland onetime was called Milesia.
[18:48]<jemler> if you get into Google Earth, and type Gwynedd, it takes you over to Wales.
[18:48]<KK> Yep.
[18:50]<TheDeryni> Did you ever see the Books in Dublin, Katherine? Book of Ulster, Book of etc...
[18:51]<jemler> I'd like to find a copy of the Book of Kells.
[18:51]<TheDeryni> That's one
[18:52]<the_Bee> I saw the one in Providence RI when I went to grad school there.
[18:52]<TheDeryni> Scott probably did, I would guess.
[18:52]<KK> It's in the Trinity College library, and they turn to a new page every few days.  There are facsimile editions of the Books of Kells that you can find.
[18:52]<KK> I saw it several times.
[18:53]<TheDeryni> I have to go back to Dublin.
[18:54]<the_Bee> Dublin or nuttin'?
[18:54]<TheDeryni> heh
[18:54]<TheDeryni> My mother was from County Monaghan, and my paternal grandparents from County Kerry.
[18:55]<TheDeryni> My freckles are kind of a redundancy for me.
[18:57]<TheDeryni> Oscars tonight.
[18:57]<the_Bee> a good book or a pre-recorded show for me.  and Cold Case.
[18:57]<KK> Yeah, it's in the background here; watching Fox News, and they're now talking about Worst of Worst.
[18:58]<TheDeryni> I hope Heath wins.
[18:58]<KK> Very tragic.
[18:58]* TheDeryni nods
[18:59]<the_Bee> He won something--Golden Globe?
[18:59]<TheDeryni> Yeah
[18:59]<KK> Ummm, gotta go.  Fantastic smells are coming from the kitchen.  Cameron is making beef stroganoff.
[19:00]<TheDeryni> :)
[19:00]<the_Bee> Yum!
[19:00]<TheDeryni> Thanks for stopping in!
[19:00]<KK> His repertoire is not large, but what's in it is pretty good.
[19:00]<the_Bee> enjoy your meal and your week, KK.  Hope you can get back to your writing.
[19:00]<TheDeryni> Have a good one and take care, Katherine.
[19:00]<jemler> nite, kk.
[19:01]* KK steps onto her Portal, waves good-night, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles, following her nsoe in the direction of the kitchen
[19:01]<TheDeryni> :)
[19:01]* KK has quit (Quit: )
