[18:16]<jemler> KK!
[18:16]<the_Bee> We had too many people to fit in one house.  some of us had dinner at my sister's some had it at my brother's.
[18:16]<KK> Hi, all.
[18:17]<the_Bee> Hello KK!!!
[18:17]<KK> Did Santa visit you all?
[18:17]<jemler> Mainly for the kids in the families. I was naughty! :)
[18:18]<the_Bee> yup.
[18:18]<KK> (However many of you all there are.  Sparse attendance tonight, though I totally uncerstand why.
[18:18]<the_Bee> how was your Christmas?
[18:18]<KK> Good holiday, then?
[18:18]<jemler> KK, I found out something today, that you may already know about.
[18:18]<KK> Ours was great.  My beef stroganoff was the best I've ever made.
[18:18]<the_Bee> Yes.  I got DC and HD.  I have DR.
[18:18]<KK> Yes, Jemler?
[18:18]<jemler> Dibs on leftovers!
[18:19]<KK> They're already being consumed by MacMillans!  It's even better the second day!
[18:19]<jemler> Did you know that President Woodrow Wilson was born in Staunton, Va?
[18:19]<the_Bee> most casserole or stew dishes are.
[18:19]<KK> Yep.  I've been to the house where he was born.  It's now part of the complex containing his Presidential Library.
[18:20]<the_Bee> no, but I bet his mama knew!
[18:20]<KK> They have his big limo, too.
[18:20]<jemler> I read it in today's newspaper, uder This day in History.
[18:20]<KK> His father was a clergyman, and the house was the rectory or mamse.
[18:21]<KK> There's a guy who dresses up like him for special occasions.  He was in the Christmas Parade.
[18:21]<KK> Dresses up like the former president, that is; not his father.
[18:21]<the_Bee> haha
[18:22]<jemler> The most famous preson from my homeown is Lou Holtz, of Notre Dame.
[18:22]* Bynw gives channel operator status to KK
[18:22]<KK> Wilson didn't actually live here very long, though.  That doesn't keep the town from making much of it.
[18:22]<Bynw> Hiyas KK
[18:22]<KK> Hi, Bynw.
[18:23]<the_Bee> My sister's local paper had an item about a Ben Franklin impersonator marrying a Betsy Ross impersonator.  The best man was dressed as Thomas Jefferson, IIRC.
[18:23]<KK> There are costumed docents who conduct tours of the house, which is quite a nice hosue, with some good period furniture.
[18:24]<KK> We've discovered that re-enacting is very big in this part of the world, especially Civil War.  AmRev is bigger over by Williamsburg.
[18:24]<the_Bee> are they well-informed?
[18:24]* Cob|away has quit (Quit: )
[18:25]<jemler> Now, Bee! How would she know? How old do you think she is! :)
[18:26]<the_Bee> she might have read something. ;)
[18:26]<KK> So one would assume.  They seem to make it a semi-national pastime.  :-)
[18:26]<the_Bee> semi? the South?
[18:27]<KK> Well, there's Civil War in the South and American Revolution in all of Virginia, as well as up the Eastern Seaboard.
[18:27]<the_Bee> oh yes
[18:29]<KK> Last summer we went up to New Market for the re-enactment of the Battle of NM, when the VMI cadets marched up from Lexington and helped break the Federal line.  It reminded me a lot of SCA events where there are merchants, except that the costumes were later.
[18:29]<the_Bee> NM?
[18:30]<KK> New Market
[18:30]<the_Bee> oh of course *slaps self*
[18:32]<the_Bee> so, have you found time to get any more writing done?
[18:33]<KK> Surely you jest!  And on Monday, I missed a step coming down our stairs, my ankle turned under me, and I went down.  Heard a cracking sound, and wasaa nearly sure I'd broken the ankle.

[18:33]<the_Bee> OUCH!
[18:33]<jemler> Hi TD!
[18:33]<the_Bee> Hi TD!
[18:34]<TheDeryni> Howdy all!
[18:34]<the_Bee> was it broken?
[18:34]<jemler> Not good, KK. My mother broke her ankle a few weeks ago. she hates the cast!
[18:34]<KK> But the sound turned out to be me hitting a wicker chair--and the ER did x-rays and pronounced it a bad strain; wrapped it and sent me home with a prescription for vicodinm, though I didn't fill it, because it didn't hurt that bad.
[18:34]<Bynw> i do that sometimes too
[18:34]<the_Bee> better to break furniture than bones.
[18:34]<Bynw> dont fill them for pain meds ... dont need em
[18:34]<KK> Took off the bandage after 2 days.  It's still a bit swolled and bruised, but I'm hardly limping, so I guess I lucked out.
[18:35]<the_Bee> My only injury is a cat scratch.  Melantha did NOT want to go back into her carrying case.
[18:36]<KK> Didn't break the furniture; wicker just creaks.  That's all it was.
[18:36]<the_Bee> ah
[18:38]<KK> So that was my lead-up to Christmas.  The day after, we had out traditional Boxing Day/St, Stephen's Day open hosue, which was fun, as usual.
[18:39]<jemler> my sister was surprised at the present i got her. a flat screen monitor for her pc.
[18:39]<TheDeryni> A few years back I slipped on ice and broke my tibula and fibula. Multiple operations, 32 pices of bone splinters removed, 4" plate, 7 screws, atrophied achilles, bone taken from my pelvic bone. Other than that, it was a breeze..
[18:39]<KK> Gus has jsut come down from his basket to climb in my lap.
[18:39]<the_Bee> Is Boxing Day still a big thing in the British Isles?
[18:39]<KK> Ouch!  Bad ice!
[18:39]<TheDeryni> Yep, bad ice.
[18:40]<jemler> All that just from slipping on ice? I did that once and only broke one bone in my hand!
[18:40]<KK> That's even worse than our son Cameron's two broken ankles and a cracked knee--from hitting black ice in his car....and skidding into a stone wall.
[18:41]<KK> I add hastily that this was nearly 15 years ago.
[18:41]<jemler> Double ouch!
[18:41]<the_Bee> Yowtch!  Glad he survived
[18:41]<TheDeryni> Yeah, when I fell I didn't see my foot anywhres. It was under my leg, reversed. Yuck.
[18:42]<KK> When I saw the remains of the car--a sturdy Capri--my stomach turned.  Fortunately, he wsa wearing his seat belt, and there was no alcohol involved.
[18:42]<TheDeryni> 1995 for me.
[18:42]* Coboney ( has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[18:42]<Coboney> hi
[18:42]<KK> That's about the time of Cameron's accident.  Must have been the year for it.  Yours sounds much worse, though.  You were just walking along?
[18:42]<TheDeryni> Very fortunate
[18:42]<the_Bee> hi Coboney
[18:42]<jemler> wb Coboney
[18:43]<Coboney> hi KK, the_Bee, jemler
[18:43]<TheDeryni> Yes, I turned around to go back to where I came from and just collapsed.
[18:43]<TheDeryni> Hiyas Cob.
[18:43]<Coboney> hi TheDeryni :P
[18:43]<the_Bee> we're comparing war wounds, Coboney
[18:44]<Coboney> ah
[18:44]<TheDeryni> I felt a pop. I thought it was a toe or something. I never felt a thing.
[18:45]<KK> Yike.  I've never broken any bone--other than one in a finger, when I nearly tore it off.  But they were able to fix it.  Involved a rope and a horse....
[18:45]<the_Bee> to fix it or cause it?
[18:45]<TheDeryni> Cause.
[18:45]<KK> Yep.
[18:46]<TheDeryni> I felt it a few minutes later for sure.
[18:46]<KK> When I wrote about Tavis losing his hand, I was drawing on somewhat similar experience with my finger, at least in the treatment, keeping it elevated and such.
[18:46]<TheDeryni> Elevation i a must.
[18:47]<TheDeryni> is, too
[18:47]<the_Bee> too bad they didn't know to keep it on ice. Javan tried to keep it warm.
[18:47]<jemler> Try not to be so realistic from now on ok, KK.
[18:47]<jemler> Yuo'll have me worried.
[18:48]<KK> Well, if one must have real-world experiences, at least they sometimes prove useful for research.  I don't know if a Deryni Healer could reattach a severed body part or not.  Not a head, for sure; but maybe something smaller.  My finger was actually still attached along one side.
[18:49]<TheDeryni> Ack.
[18:49]<jemler> I thought they mentioned something about that after Tavis lost his hand.
[18:50]<the_Bee> my dad once made the mistake of trying to unclog a snowblower while it was still running.  he walked up to the hospital and they sewed his fingers back on.
[18:50]<Elim> I set my own wrist once.
[18:50]<the_Bee> that must have been panful
[18:50]<KK> Did he regain the use of the fingers?  That's the tricky bit, growing new nerves.
[18:50]<Elim> I certainly didn't enjoy it.
[18:51]<the_Bee> oh yes.  I never looked closely enough to see haow much was missing.
[18:51]<KK> Where were you, Elim, that you had to set your own wrist?
[18:52]<Elim> An hour away from the orthopedic clinic, and educated enough to do it myself.
[18:52]<Elim> We still drove up there to get a cast put on and all that.
[18:52]<jemler> In my neighborhood, you only need the use one finger! ;)
[18:52]<TheDeryni> I could never set my own wrist. I have enough trouble setting the table.
[18:52]<KK> Are you a paramedic, or did you get it checked at the hospital afterward?
[18:53]<KK> Ah.
[18:53]<Elim> They said that to have done any better they would have to do surgery.
[18:53]<KK> You expanded while I was asking,.
[18:53]<Elim> KK, first responder training.
[18:53]<KK> Ah.  Useful, that.
[18:53]<the_Bee> Jemler, you can get in trouble with one finger. ;)
[18:54]<Elim> Yes, though I haven't kept it current.
[18:54]<jemler> Didn't that HURT though?
[18:54]<TheDeryni> I'm sure Jemler has. :)
[18:54]<Elim> Hurt? absolutely.
[18:54]<jemler> I didn't say which finger. yuou guys have dirty minds!
[18:54]<KK> Oddly enough, it often doesn't hurt that much when it first happens; shock an such.  My finger never did hurt that much.
[18:55]<TheDeryni> Same with my leg. Shock.
[18:55]<the_Bee> yes.  my cat scratch itches more now than when I got it.
[18:55]<Elim> It was the second time I had broken that bone, the first time was halfway between the elbow and wrist.
[18:55]<the_Bee> ulna or radius?
[18:55]<KK> Ow.  It must be really strong now, with all that regrowth of bone.
[18:56]<Elim> Ulna.
[18:56]<the_Bee> my mom broke her arm when she was seven.
[18:57]<KK> Breaking ankles seems to run in the distaff half of my family. My mother, sister, aunt, sister-in-law--and my father, too.  All have broken ankles.
[18:57]<Bynw> thats not a good sign
[18:57]<KK> They don't have them now; they've broken them in the past.  ;-)
[18:58]<Elim> The first time we went to local hospital and waited an hour until my family doctor came by and wanted to know what we were doing in the emergency room. We explained the situation, he told us to leave the hospital and go across the street to his office. Once there he gave me a valium, put my arm in a brace, and made an appointment with the orthopedic clinic 50 miles away, which we drove to.
[18:58]<jemler> Did you ever stop to think that some family traditions are more trouble than they're worth?
[18:58]<Bynw> lol
[18:58]<KK> I'd certainly agree.
[18:58]<TheDeryni> Um, do you have a title for the 3rd novel, Katherine? I'm not sure if you mentioned it before or not.
[18:59]<jemler> I mean since breaking bones seems to be a family trait, maybe you should consider adoption! I'd adopt you.
[18:59]<the_Bee> then she might get an aneurism, Jemler!
[19:00]<jemler> An adopted anuerism? Hmmm.
[19:00]<KK> Alas, no.  But I really, really, really am going to get back on it right after the first of the year.  Right now, I'm making SERIOUS inroads into clearing all the debris off my desk that doesn't pertain to the book.  And I have a new mini-laptop to travel with me when I go to Berkeley at the end of January for my niece's wedding.
[19:00]<the_Bee> good!
[19:00]<Elim> KK, an eeePC?
[19:00]<TheDeryni> Cool.
[19:01]<jemler> Congratulate her for me.
[19:01]<KK> It's about 6" X 10", and really cute, and light.  And it's a PC; my MacBook Pro was giving me fits, so I traded it to Cameron for this little PC.
[19:02]<KK> It's perfect for travel, or working in front of the TV, or on the back porch when the weather is nice.
[19:02]* Bynw loves his macbook pro
[19:02]<KK> No CD drive, but one uses flash drives to transfer data.
[19:02]<Elim> I have an eeePC it's darn cool.
[19:03]<TheDeryni> Traded your mac for a pc. :) Cool.
[19:03]* TheDeryni smiles at Bynw
[19:03]* the_Bee has mac-o-phobia.
[19:04]<KK> Anyway, I'd better sign off.  I smell stroganoff in the kitchen (Cameron is boiling up some more orzo--way better than rice!)
[19:04]<the_Bee> orzo?
[19:04]<the_Bee> enjoy your meal, KK
[19:04]<KK> It's tiny pasta that looks like rice but isn't.  Very yummy.
[19:04]<TheDeryni> Have a good one, Katherine. Thanks for stopping in!
[19:04]<Elim> Have fun KK
[19:04]<jemler> Happy New Year, KK!
[19:05]<the_Bee> I wonder if my local market carries it
[19:05]<the_Bee> HAPPY NEW YEAR to all!
[19:05]<KK> Good to chat with all of you.  See you next year.  And yes, your market should have it, in the pasta section.
[19:05]<TheDeryni> They should Bee
[19:05]<Bynw> have a good night KK
[19:05]<Elim> It is a common pasta.
[19:05]<KK> Happy New Year to all!
[19:06]<the_Bee> good week, KK
[19:06]<TheDeryni> 'Till next year!
[19:06]<TheDeryni> You also, Katherine.
[19:06]* KK steps onto her Portal, waves good night, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.
[19:06]<jemler> New Years Resolution for all. No more broken bones!
[19:06]<KK> Amen!
[19:06]<TheDeryni> :)
