deryni genetics - unified theory
« on: August 07, 2008, 01:09:09 pm »
I have been thinking a lot about X vs Y stuff and why if there is so many Deryni ancestors in the Haldanes why didnt it show at Camber's time and why didnt they know about it.  So here goes a new theory:

The Y-gene is more powerful and is a switching gene as well.  The Haldanes have a strong lineage of Y-genes.  The gene has the effect of switching off the X-genes and thus hiding the Deryniness just as Rhys' technique does manually.

So the Haldanes including Cinhil are Deryni but did not have explicit powers until Camber et al learned to tap into them.  This also explains why when one of his ancestors needed magic it was instantaneous and powerful.  Camber was not really adding potential, he was putting in place a mechanism to unlock what was there, when it is needed.

That's an interesting theory.  You ought to come to chat one Sunday and present that to KK and see what she says about it.
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

Click on chatroom and that will take you into the chat.  Type "/nick yournick" when you get in there to identify yourself.  And then chat with us!

The Y-gene is more powerful and is a switching gene as well.  The Haldanes have a strong lineage of Y-genes.  The gene has the effect of switching off the X-genes and thus hiding the Deryniness just as Rhys' technique does manually.

I'm inclined to an epigenetic explanation http://theweek.com/article/index/238907/epigenetics-how-our-experiences-affect-our-offspring. I think the Haldanes' triggering rituals (like the blocking Rhys discovered) are epigenetic switches that allow existing genes to function, so that the individuals exhibit the powers (or not, in case of the block being set). Research has shown epigenetic settings can pass to offspring; this could explain how the first generation of blocked Deryni (from the Revan's baptism cult--see The Harrowing and King Javan's Year) produced subsequent generations of blocked Deryni. This could also mean that people who exhibit rudimentary shields (like Alaric Morgan's father Kenneth) or who show other Deryni-linked traits (Derry's aptitude for magic and his way with horses) could actually be Deryni descendants whose ancestors had their powers blocked in that period. They won't scan as Deryni, but they actually are Deryni.

It may even be that Warin de Grey is Deryni, and his powers are only partially blocked; if exposure to such magic and/or intense meditation (Warin is nothing if not devout) could be a factor in this--or to put it another way, perhaps the switch is a dimmer rather than an on-off switch--Warin may have selectively released some of his powers in his prayerful search for his divine mission, so that he doesn't read as Deryni when Morgan Duncan and Kelson (admittedly none of them entirely expert) read him.

Wouldn't that mean that any Haldane princesses would be deryni, since she doesn't have the Y-gene? two hundred years of every child being magically capable should have been noticed.
