Jan 21 19:05:05 *   KK has joined
Jan 21 19:05:07 <DesertRose>   I've been up there a few times, although the last time was a good twenty years ago.
Jan 21 19:05:08 <DesertRose>   Hi KK!
Jan 21 19:05:08 <Evie>   Hi KK
Jan 21 19:05:11 <Eyikl>   hi KK!
Jan 21 19:05:11 <bynw>   but i remind everyone, the chat is open 24 hours a day 7 days a week, never know who will be in here
Jan 21 19:05:13 <bynw>   hiyas KK
Jan 21 19:05:16 <JudyWard>   Not nearly as much digging!
Jan 21 19:05:19 <DesertRose>   I have family in the Norfolk area, though.
Jan 21 19:05:24 <KK>   Hello, all.
Jan 21 19:05:33 <JudyWard>   Hi, KK! You must have "heard" us talking about you. <G>
Jan 21 19:05:45 <Derynifank>   It wouldn'the have been but they were afraid they might have to pay more taxes
Jan 21 19:05:48 <DesertRose>   Her ears were burning so she decided to sign into chat. :)
Jan 21 19:06:01 <JudyWard>   Guess I will stay awhile then go finish dinner.
Jan 21 19:06:05 <Derynifank>   Hi KK
Jan 21 19:06:06 <Evie>   How has your week been, KK?
Jan 21 19:06:25 <DesertRose>   KK, we had just been talking about when chat starts and ends, and I said that chat starts when you show up and ends when you sign off.  :D
Jan 21 19:07:32 <KK>   True.  But in general, we start at 7 PM and end 8ish, or sometimes later.  All depends.
Jan 21 19:07:41 <DesertRose>   Yup
Jan 21 19:08:03 <Evie>   Laurna says Hi. She had a dance class tonight, so won't be able to join us this week.
Jan 21 19:08:25 <Eyikl>   Sounds fun
Jan 21 19:08:28 <JudyWard>   Dance is fun.
Jan 21 19:08:35 <jemler>   hi kk
Jan 21 19:09:26 *   jemler drops a pin
Jan 21 19:09:45 <DesertRose>   Dance is my daughter's big interest in the SCA.
Jan 21 19:09:51 <JudyWard>   Judy smacks Jemler with a soft noodle.
Jan 21 19:09:52 <Evie>   KK, question for you re: Culdi
Jan 21 19:10:05 <JudyWard>   Oh, yes! we can find out.
Jan 21 19:10:06 <Evie>   I may have asked this before, but if I have, I can't remember your answer. LOL!
Jan 21 19:10:09 <KK>   Week was....interesting.  LBM finally went to Urgent Care on Friday, after many days of coughing and generally declining.  Urgent Care said they thought she was coming down with pneumonia and sent us to the ER, which agreed and admitted her.  Many rounds of IV antibiotis and many breathing treatments and oxygen, but she's pulled through beautifully, and almost certainly will go home tomorrow. Looks and sounds better than she has in weeks.
Jan 21 19:10:24 <DesertRose>   Yikes!
Jan 21 19:10:32 <Evie>   Oh, wow!  Glad she's doing better!
Jan 21 19:10:35 <DesertRose>   Apparently stubborn parents run in this chat, but I'm glad your mom is okay.
Jan 21 19:10:36 <bynw>   PTL on that KK
Jan 21 19:10:49 <Derynifank>   Great that she is better.
Jan 21 19:10:56 <DesertRose>   (JudyWard and I were talking earlier about my stepdad's bullheadedness.)
Jan 21 19:10:57 <jemler>   LBM is one tough woman!
Jan 21 19:10:59 <JudyWard>   Oooo. Pneumonia is bad! Glad she's better!
Jan 21 19:11:21 <KK>   Yeah, you may recall that she was in the hospital overnight the weekend before Christmas, after passing out (and then vomiting) for no discernible reason.  This must have been simmering then, and finally caught up with her.
Jan 21 19:11:35 <DesertRose>   I wonder if she had bronchitis or a bad cold or something?
Jan 21 19:11:51 <Derynifank>   The flu this year is especially  bad. Hope everyone  had a flu shot
Jan 21 19:11:53 <Evie>   Yes, I remember you mentioning last week that it seemed to have been a one-time problem
Jan 21 19:11:59 <Eyikl>   She has my sypathies. I hope she recovers fully.
Jan 21 19:12:15 <KK>   Nope.  Just her chronic cough, which they've now given a name to.  Apparently, it's interstitial lung disease.
Jan 21 19:12:19 <DesertRose>   Oh no!
Jan 21 19:12:33 <DesertRose>   Is she going to be able to treat it?
Jan 21 19:12:36 <JudyWard>   Oh, that can get serious.
Jan 21 19:12:43 <KK>   But she's shited from IV antibiotics to oral ones, and is off oxygen, which is all to the good.
Jan 21 19:12:53 <KK>   shifted, shisfted
Jan 21 19:12:59 <KK>   shifted
Jan 21 19:13:00 <JudyWard>   LOL!
Jan 21 19:13:01 <DesertRose>   Indeed, particularly the "off oxygen" bit.
Jan 21 19:13:03 <Derynifank>   Sounds like good progress
Jan 21 19:13:03 <Evie>   :-D
Jan 21 19:13:18 <JudyWard>   Off oxygen is always good.

Jan 21 19:13:19 <DesertRose>   Well, I'd hope she's doing the other thing from time to time too, but I figured you missed a key there.  :D
Jan 21 19:13:22 <DesertRose>   Hi Bee!
Jan 21 19:13:23 <jemler>   hi bee
Jan 21 19:13:24 <Evie>   As KK descends into the first level of Typo Hell...
Jan 21 19:13:26 <JudyWard>   Hi, Bee
Jan 21 19:13:27 <DesertRose>   LOL
Jan 21 19:13:38 <Derynifank>   Hi Bee
Jan 21 19:13:47 <bynw>   Hi Bee
Jan 21 19:13:48 <KK>   I think there's no vure, just treatment of the symptoms, sort of like COPD.
Jan 21 19:14:00 <KK>   cure.  Damn can't type tonight.
Jan 21 19:14:00 <The_Bee>   Hi everyone!  Typo Hell?
Jan 21 19:14:18 <Evie>   Bad case of fumble fingers, Bee
Jan 21 19:14:22 <DesertRose>   Yeah, that was what I was thinking too, but good management-treatment is available, sometimes, depending on the symptoms and their severity.
Jan 21 19:14:22 <JudyWard>   It's already bitten me tonight, too.
Jan 21 19:14:26 <jemler>   itz ware no won kin tip.
Jan 21 19:14:41 <bynw>   lol
Jan 21 19:14:42 <Derynifank>   I know about typo hell. Think I live there
Jan 21 19:14:45 <JudyWard>   And yes, KK, just treatment. But good results.
Jan 21 19:15:03 <DesertRose>   My ex-fiance's mom had (or has, I suppose, I haven't heard if she's no longer living) COPD, but hers was not well managed, so we spent a lot of time in the hospital with her.

Jan 21 19:15:35 <DesertRose>   DF64!  Hiya. Belated happy birthday!
Jan 21 19:15:41 <JudyWard>   Hi, DF64
Jan 21 19:15:46 <DF64>   hi all--thanks
Jan 21 19:15:55 <bynw>   hi DF64
Jan 21 19:16:03 <Eyikl>   hi DF64
Jan 21 19:16:30 <The_Bee>   Happy late birthday, DF64
Jan 21 19:16:45 <DF64>   54!!
Jan 21 19:16:53 <Eyikl>   Happy Birthday!
Jan 21 19:16:54 <DesertRose>   :)
Jan 21 19:17:10 <Evie>   Happy anniversary of your birth
Jan 21 19:17:27 <JudyWard>   HB DF64!
Jan 21 19:17:29 <jemler>   its a birthversary!
Jan 21 19:17:40 <Derynifank>   There are pulmonary rehab programs that don'the cure but really help wot management  and improve symptoms, Might ask her doctor about it
Jan 21 19:17:41 <JudyWard>   <G>
Jan 21 19:18:04 <JudyWard>   Ah, it bit you, too.
Jan 21 19:18:08 <Derynifank>   Happy birthday DF64
Jan 21 19:18:28 <DesertRose>   I think Derynifank is not so much a victim of Typo Hell as DYAC (Damn You, Autocorrect).
Jan 21 19:18:40 <Derynifank>   So true
Jan 21 19:18:53 <JudyWard>   Could be.
Jan 21 19:19:10 <jemler>   question re Culdi!
Jan 21 19:19:11 <DesertRose>   It's gotten me more than once, especially if I was typing on my phone in bed and had already taken my glasses off for the evening.
Jan 21 19:19:14 <bynw>   i'm sure your mobile device has a setting somewhere to turn off autocorrect
Jan 21 19:19:19 <DesertRose>   Bifocals are NECESSARY, yo!
Jan 21 19:19:29 <KK>   We've discovered there's another pulmonologist on staff, so we're going to have him review her case and see if he has any new suggestions.
Jan 21 19:19:36 <DesertRose>   Good.
Jan 21 19:19:42 <JudyWard>   Yes, what was that question about Culdi?
Jan 21 19:19:49 <JudyWard>   2nd opinions are good.
Jan 21 19:19:50 <Evie>   Oh yeah!
Jan 21 19:20:10 <KK>   Yes, Culdi question.
Jan 21 19:20:15 <DF64>   bifocals without the lines are even better
Jan 21 19:20:17 <DesertRose>   I think it was something about Why the heck do the Dukes of Cassan seem to spend so much time at the seat of an earldom that has more or less nothing to do with the duchy of Cassan.  :)
Jan 21 19:20:26 <bynw>   always without the lines
Jan 21 19:20:36 <Derynifank>   Good. I would ask specifically about the rehab programs as for some reason they don't  always think about it
Jan 21 19:21:02 <JudyWard>   Yes that was the question. Does it belong to Carthmore or Cassan?
Jan 21 19:21:03 <DesertRose>   I got the lined ones, DF64, because a) less expensive and b) a couple of my family members have tried the progressives and hated them passionately, so I didn't want to buy an expensive pair of glasses and have them be effectively useless.
Jan 21 19:21:23 <Evie>   OK, in the novels, we see Jared and his family at Culdi, and it appears to be perhaps his ducal seat. But then in the Codex, we find out Richelle is actually the present Countess of Culdi due to inheriting it from Richard Haldane, who would have been Earl of Culdi in Jared's time. So was Jared serving as his lieutenant for Culdi as well as being the Duke of Cassan?
Jan 21 19:21:25 <The_Bee>   I find a cheap pair of reading glasses works better for me than bi- or -tri-focals.
Jan 21 19:21:43 <Evie>   Like Sean Derry is Earl of Derry but also Alaric's lieutenent for Corwyn when he is away?
Jan 21 19:21:59 <Evie>   I was trying to figure out how to reconcile what looks like a conflict there
Jan 21 19:22:11 <DF64>   I have eye insurance--so my share of cost is less without insurance
Jan 21 19:22:18 <JudyWard>   Yes, Evie, exactly. Is he?
Jan 21 19:22:41 <DesertRose>   Bee, I've been using reading glasses for my cross stitch stuff for probably the better part of a decade before I got these bifocals (this pair is my first).
Jan 21 19:22:46 <JudyWard>   My insurance will only pay so much toward graduated lenses. I use reading glasses.
Jan 21 19:22:47 *   Jerusha (Mibbit@OWIRCN-51eb0bf6.dsl.bell.ca) has joined
Jan 21 19:22:54 <bynw>   hi Jerusha
Jan 21 19:22:56 <The_Bee>   hi Jerusha
Jan 21 19:22:56 <jemler>   a Duke as a lt for an Earl?
Jan 21 19:23:00 <Evie>   Annie, Alkari and I puzzled over that question years ago, but I can't remember if it's ever been asked in here, or what the answer was if it had been
Jan 21 19:23:01 <DesertRose>   And I have insurance too, but it'd still be a colossal hassle to get glasses and not be able to use them?
Jan 21 19:23:01 <jemler>   hi jerusha
Jan 21 19:23:04 <DesertRose>   Hi Jerusha
Jan 21 19:23:07 <JudyWard>   Hi, Jerusha!
Jan 21 19:23:08 <Eyikl>   hi Jerusha
Jan 21 19:23:17 <DesertRose>   Well, when the earl is a member of the royal family, maybe, jemler.
Jan 21 19:23:17 <Evie>   Hi Jerusha
Jan 21 19:23:18 <Jerusha>   Hi Everyone
Jan 21 19:23:41 <Evie>   Yes, he was Prince Richard Haldane. Donal's younger half brother, if I remember the genealogy
Jan 21 19:23:49 <bynw>   its an important Earldom and yes a Royal Earldom
Jan 21 19:23:51 <Evie>   but princes can have secondary titles too
Jan 21 19:23:55 <DesertRose>   And I have no idea why I punctuated the sentence about the hassle with a question mark.
Jan 21 19:23:55 <JudyWard>   That's him.
Jan 21 19:23:59 <Derynifank>   Particularly  wondered why Duke a Jared seemed to spend so much time there
Jan 21 19:24:07 <Evie>   Such as Nigel, who is a prince but also Duke of Carthmoor
Jan 21 19:24:24 <Evie>   Especially since it doesn't appear to be in Cassan
Jan 21 19:24:26 <DesertRose>   And Nigel probably has a secondary title or five floating around that just haven't been material to the story.
Jan 21 19:24:41 <JudyWard>   Or maybe Nigel never goes there so Cassan keeps it from falling in on itself.
Jan 21 19:24:57 <JudyWard>   In Camber's day, he was Earl of Culdi.
Jan 21 19:25:10 <Derynifank>   Hi Jerusha
Jan 21 19:25:15 <Jerusha>   So Nigel is a prince, a duke, and Cassan is falling on his head?
Jan 21 19:25:26 <JudyWard>   LOL!
Jan 21 19:25:27 <Evie>   But if Richard had delegated the de facto managing of Culdi to Jared while remaining the Earl there, that makes a lot more sense
Jan 21 19:25:43 <DesertRose>   Yes, but once the Regents ruined everything for every Deryni anywhere in reach, the earldom of Culdi went to one of the regents and then at some point wound up back in crown control.
Jan 21 19:25:49 <JudyWard>   It would make sense.
Jan 21 19:26:11 <JudyWard>   Or maybe awarded as a reward for help in some battle or other.
Jan 21 19:26:36 <DesertRose>   The last MacRorie to be Earl of Culdi was Cathan's older son and now I can't remember their names.
Jan 21 19:26:54 <The_Bee>   Davin?
Jan 21 19:26:55 <jemler>   davin and ansel
Jan 21 19:26:55 <Evie>   KK, see what puzzles your fans can dig up for you when you go away for a few days? LOL!
Jan 21 19:27:15 <JudyWard>   I think maybe she ran off & hid from us.
Jan 21 19:27:21 <DesertRose>   Davin was one of them, and he died trying to foil one or another Regent plot.
Jan 21 19:27:30 <Evie>   Or ran off to grab her Codex.  :-D
Jan 21 19:27:33 <DesertRose>   But I can't remember whether Davin or Ansel was the elder brother.
Jan 21 19:27:47 <The_Bee>   Davin was older, IIRC
Jan 21 19:27:57 *   bynw thinks it would be nice to have Codex in PDF form
Jan 21 19:28:05 <DesertRose>   Ansel's the one who survived to marry and beget children, and they started using the surname MacAthan because MacRorie was way too dangerous by then.
Jan 21 19:28:17 <Evie>   I think it would be awesome to have Codex in updatable Wiki format
Jan 21 19:28:19 <DesertRose>   It would, wouldn't it, bynw!
Jan 21 19:28:24 <jemler>   davin was the elder. ansel helped block the kiertney heirs before he was wounded. tieg klearned to block at this timde.
Jan 21 19:28:35 <Evie>   A searchable Wiki
Jan 21 19:28:37 <DesertRose>   I don't know about Wiki, because that means any old anybody can edit it.
Jan 21 19:28:37 <JudyWard>   I'd then be able to see it!
Jan 21 19:28:59 *   bynw just smiles at Jerusha and Evie to make the nervous
Jan 21 19:29:01 <DesertRose>   But a searchable file, with editing privileges granted to people who wouldn't do weird crap to the text just to troll would be cool.
Jan 21 19:29:05 <Evie>   True, but if it's in PDF, it would need to be re-updated with every book
Jan 21 19:29:10 <bynw>   just a PDF that is searchable would be great
Jan 21 19:29:11 <JudyWard>   Yeah, on line but not Wiki, maybe.
Jan 21 19:29:21 <Jerusha>   Now what have you done, Bynw??!!
Jan 21 19:29:32 *   DesertRose zips it.
Jan 21 19:29:33 <Evie>   That won't work, bynw. I see scarier things than you in my refrigerator.  Or in Aliset's scrying crystal. LOL!
Jan 21 19:29:49 <KK>   A lot of relationships just grew as needed, but in modern use, royal princes often become royal dukes upon marriage, like Prince William being Duke of Cambridge.  And then there's Prince Edward, who became Earl of Wessex on marriage, but will become Duke of Edinburgh when Prince Philip dies--or so it's assumed.  But that's England.  In real life, and in fiction, the King can make anyone whatever he wants, and dukes and earls can apportion the
Jan 21 19:30:24 <Evie>   I only got that up to "...earls can apportion the"
Jan 21 19:30:29 <Evie>   And then it abruptly ends
Jan 21 19:30:29 <Jerusha>   I thought Edward did not want to be a duke
Jan 21 19:30:39 <DesertRose>   I will say only that bynw was plotting while he and I were more or less alone in the chat and then I will shut my trap.  :)
Jan 21 19:30:45 <DF64>   I'll just appoint myself Duke DF64 of Orlando
Jan 21 19:30:50 <DesertRose>   LOL
Jan 21 19:30:51 <Derynifank>   Was there ever anymore discussion about putting  the fanfic  into pdf format for diwnliaf?
Jan 21 19:31:04 <JudyWard>   For what???
Jan 21 19:31:08 <Jerusha>   Weren't merasha dipped crossbow bolts enough?
Jan 21 19:31:15 <The_Bee>   What about Prince Andrew?  He's older than Edward.
Jan 21 19:31:29 <JudyWard>   He's already duke of something.
Jan 21 19:31:36 <Evie>   He's Duke of York
Jan 21 19:31:38 <DesertRose>   We haven't touched that project in a while, Derynifank, because I think Julianne hasn't found the hard drive on which the old submissions were saved or hasn't had time to try to recover them or something.
Jan 21 19:31:42 <JudyWard>   Yes! Thanks!
Jan 21 19:31:50 <Derynifank>   Oh dear, what is he plotting now
Jan 21 19:32:07 <Derynifank>   Download
Jan 21 19:32:10 <DesertRose>   And Her Majesty, among various and sundry lesser titles, is Duchess of Lancaster.  :)
Jan 21 19:32:30 *   bynw just smiles back at Jerusha
Jan 21 19:32:34 <JudyWard>   Maybe Charlotte can become that.
Jan 21 19:32:42 <DesertRose>   Now watch as Richard III rolls in his (newly appropriately identified at least) grave at the mere thought.
Jan 21 19:32:44 <The_Bee>   The duchy of York seems to go to a king's younger son.
Jan 21 19:32:57 <Jerusha>   Bear in mind, Bywn, we'd all kind of like to survive
Jan 21 19:33:11 <DesertRose>   To say nothing of the many other casualties of the Wars of the Roses.  :P
Jan 21 19:33:26 <Jerusha>   I've grown fond of Darcy
Jan 21 19:33:33 <KK>   I think the British RF worked things out around the time of Edward's marriage.  If he doesn't take his father's dukedom, it will end with Philip's death.  Poor man (P) has already given up his surname for his royal marriage to the QWueen.
Jan 21 19:33:37 <JudyWard>   Poor guy! Under a parking lot all that time!
Jan 21 19:33:41 <bynw>   there is a great gaming expression it's called TPK
Jan 21 19:33:51 <DesertRose>   You evil man, bynw!
Jan 21 19:33:59 <Jerusha>   TPK?
Jan 21 19:34:01 <KK>   Actually, EIIR is Duke of Lancaster.  One of those oddities.
Jan 21 19:34:07 <DesertRose>   Total Party Kill.
Jan 21 19:34:16 <Jerusha>   Yikes!
Jan 21 19:34:20 <DesertRose>   Oh, I thought they'd feminized the title since she's a woman.
Jan 21 19:34:24 <DesertRose>   My bad.
Jan 21 19:34:31 <DesertRose>   I knew she held the duchy of Lancaster, anyway.
Jan 21 19:34:35 <JudyWard>   That sounds evil,bynw
Jan 21 19:34:36 <jemler>   is that the same as a buzz kill?
Jan 21 19:34:49 <DesertRose>   It's the same thing as a wipe, jemler.
Jan 21 19:34:49 <KK>   Nope.  It's one of her oldest titles.
Jan 21 19:34:52 <Jerusha>   \me throws Darcy in his sea bag and runs away
Jan 21 19:34:53 <Evie>   We'll all come back and haunt you if that happens
Jan 21 19:34:59 <DesertRose>   So, in a way, yes, it is a buzzkill.
Jan 21 19:34:59 <bynw>   jemler, no
Jan 21 19:35:36 <DesertRose>   (forward slash, Jerusha, not backslash)
Jan 21 19:35:48 <Jerusha>   My bad. Or rather my rented fingers
Jan 21 19:35:59 <DesertRose>   Seems to be a chat epidemic tonight.
Jan 21 19:36:02 <JudyWard>   I bet QEII would be fun to talk to.
Jan 21 19:36:03 <Evie>   KK, I missed the last part of your answer above re Culdi and Jared's role there.  It got cut off in mid-sentence.  :-(
Jan 21 19:36:20 <KK>   The finger rental agency must be low on supplies tonight.  There are lots of us with didgy digits.
Jan 21 19:36:25 <KK>   dodgy
Jan 21 19:36:27 <Evie>   LOL!
Jan 21 19:36:32 <Jerusha>   Yep
Jan 21 19:36:33 <DesertRose>   Yes, the last part of your reply re: Culdi was "In real life, and in fiction, the King can make anyone whatever he wants, and dukes and earls can apportion the"
Jan 21 19:36:41 <jemler>   didgy dogits!
Jan 21 19:36:41 <Evie>   KK descends to the Second Level of Typo Hell.....
Jan 21 19:36:51 <DesertRose>   How many levels of Typo Hell are there?  :P
Jan 21 19:36:57 <DesertRose>   Oh great
Jan 21 19:36:57 <Jerusha>   Far too many
Jan 21 19:37:04 <Evie>   If it's like Dante's version, then maybe 9?
Jan 21 19:37:26 <Evie>    If it's like that dice roller Bynw had us on, then infinite levels
Jan 21 19:37:34 <Jerusha>   Oh yeah
Jan 21 19:37:36 <KK>    In real life, and in fiction, the King can make anyone whatever he wants, and dukes and earls can apportion their duties as needed/wanted for better functioning.
Jan 21 19:37:46 <Evie>   Ah, OK
Jan 21 19:37:47 <Eyikl>   Except a bunch of the layers seemed to have sub-layers.
Jan 21 19:37:51 <JudyWard>   Ah, there it is.
Jan 21 19:37:51 <DesertRose>   Now I just had my brain go, "You could write a parody of La Divina Commedia, except for Typo Hell rather than 'regular' Hell."
Jan 21 19:38:00 <DF64>   the duchy of Lancaster merged into the English crown when Henry V became king
Jan 21 19:38:16 <DesertRose>   I think it was Henry VII.
Jan 21 19:38:18 <Jerusha>   There is potential in that, DR
Jan 21 19:38:42 <Eyikl>   In a high enough level of Typo Heaven would stories write themselves?
Jan 21 19:38:45 <DF64>   I just checked on Wikipedia--they say Henry V
Jan 21 19:38:48 <The_Bee>   Henty VII was the first Tudor.
Jan 21 19:38:52 <KK>   But Duke of Lancaster is still a royal title, and I think there's an income connected with it.
Jan 21 19:38:52 <Evie>   LOL, Eyikl!
Jan 21 19:38:55 <DesertRose>   Yes, but I'm awful at finishing large writing projects unless I have to turn them in for grading.
Jan 21 19:39:01 <DesertRose>   LOL, Eyikl
Jan 21 19:39:11 <Evie>   Can I go to Typo Heaven? I have two unfinished stories waiting to show up at those pearly gates!
Jan 21 19:39:18 <Jerusha>   I'm still on the bottom rung
Jan 21 19:39:32 <DesertRose>   There were Yorkist kings after Henry V, who would have bristled quite mightily at that.
Jan 21 19:39:34 <Eyikl>   me to
Jan 21 19:39:56 <JudyWard>   TH is like sticky mud sucking you down.
Jan 21 19:40:16 <DesertRose>   Henry V was Lancastrian, his son Henry VI was . . . unwell, and Edward IV overthrew him (a couple of times, actually).
Jan 21 19:40:20 <jemler>   a Pulitzer Prize is writers heaven, a Putz Prize is writers hell.
Jan 21 19:41:20 *   Derynifank has quit (Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client)
Jan 21 19:41:22 <Evie>   Luke is here to luke at everyone
Jan 21 19:41:24 <DesertRose>   Then Edward IV died, it "came to light" that Edward's marriage to Elizabeth Woodville wasn't actually legal because he'd been engaged to another lady and never broken the betrothal before marrying Elizabeth, so his two sons were "housed" in the Tower of London never to be seen again, and Richard III (Edward's brother) took the throne.
Jan 21 19:41:26 *   Derynifank (Derynifank@OWIRCN-dc339139.hr.cox.net) has joined
Jan 21 19:41:29 <JudyWard>   Sometimes the Pulitzer Prize goes to a work I wouldn't read if it was the last book in the outhouse.
Jan 21 19:41:33 <Eyikl>   Hi Luke!
Jan 21 19:41:42 <JudyWard>   ReHi, DF
Jan 21 19:41:53 <Jerusha>   Hi Like and DF
Jan 21 19:41:56 <The_Bee>   WB< DF
Jan 21 19:41:57 <DesertRose>   Then Henry VII killed Richard III at the Battle of Market Bosworth and Richard ended up under a car park.
Jan 21 19:41:59 <Evie>   LOL, Judy
Jan 21 19:42:11 <JudyWard>   <G>
Jan 21 19:42:29 <bynw>   you have to park those bodies someplace
Jan 21 19:42:34 <DesertRose>   And Henry VII married Edward IV's daughter, also named Elizabeth after her mother, and they had Henry VIII and we all know how well he did in marriage.
Jan 21 19:42:40 <JudyWard>   Ooo! Good one bynw
Jan 21 19:43:15 <DesertRose>   Yeah, some "literary" fiction is utter crap.
Jan 21 19:43:18 <Jerusha>   Not the poster child for lasting marriages
Jan 21 19:43:28 <DesertRose>   Some of it is actually worth all the hype, but some of it is. . . not.
Jan 21 19:43:29 <JudyWard>   H VIII needed marriage counselling really badly.
Jan 21 19:43:42 <Eyikl>   HIs children weren't really either
Jan 21 19:43:43 <JudyWard>   Right , DR
Jan 21 19:43:49 <DesertRose>   He also needed a crash course in genetics, specifically the passing on of X and Y chromosomes.
Jan 21 19:43:49 <Jerusha>   He was a head of his day
Jan 21 19:44:04 <Evie>   *groan*
Jan 21 19:44:17 *   DesertRose lobs a watermelon at Jerusha.
Jan 21 19:44:19 <Evie>   I neeed a macro for throwing fish at Jerusha
Jan 21 19:44:23 <DesertRose>   For those days when a fish won't do.
Jan 21 19:44:23 <The_Bee>   What was Henry VII's connection to York/  His marriage to elizabeth supposedly unitied the York ND Lancaster factions.
Jan 21 19:44:30 <Derynifank>   Actually  he needed genetic counselling but they didn't have that
Jan 21 19:44:38 <bynw>   well those scientific discoveries that the man is actually responsible for the sex of a child wouldnt be known for sometime
Jan 21 19:44:55 <Jerusha>   It was always the wife's fault
Jan 21 19:44:57 <DesertRose>   Elizabeth (wife of Henry VII) was the daughter of Edward IV and the niece of Richard III, both of whom were of the Yorkist line.
Jan 21 19:44:57 <JudyWard>   True
Jan 21 19:45:26 <JudyWard>   Ack! What degree of related was that?
Jan 21 19:45:43 <Jerusha>   Elizabeth is a true family name
Jan 21 19:45:56 <The_Bee>   IIRC, Henry VIII had sons, but only one with his wife.
Jan 21 19:46:05 <DesertRose>   Henry VII was Duke of Lancaster in his own right via his mother, Lady Margaret Beaufort, who was one of the (MANY HOLY COW) descendants of Joan Beaufort, who was the daughter of John of Gaunt, first royal Duke of Lancaster, and his longtime mistress/eventual third wife, Lady Katherine Swynford.
Jan 21 19:46:24 <Jerusha>   I think he had one illegitimate one, and one by marriage
Jan 21 19:46:29 <bynw>   it would be the wife's fault if she were a bene gesserit
Jan 21 19:46:41 <DesertRose>   John of Gaunt became Duke of Lancaster via his first wife, Blanche, who was the heiress to the last non-royal Duke of Lancaster.
Jan 21 19:46:53 <Eyikl>   And his illegitimate one died at 16.
Jan 21 19:46:54 <JudyWard>   I've seen that but don't remember what it is, bynw
Jan 21 19:47:05 <bynw>   Dune
Jan 21 19:47:07 <Jerusha>   Dune
Jan 21 19:47:11 <jemler>   Dune series by frank herbert.
Jan 21 19:47:17 <DesertRose>   Henry VIII had several sons, but only Edward VI lived to be old enough to come near adulthood.
Jan 21 19:47:24 <JudyWard>   OH, YES! Haven't read that in years!!
Jan 21 19:47:25 <Evie>   Testing the watermelon launcher....
Jan 21 19:47:28 <Evie>   Evie launches a watermelon at Jerusha
Jan 21 19:47:34 <DesertRose>   Edward VI's mother was Jane Seymour, Henry VIII's third wife.
Jan 21 19:47:38 <Jerusha>   What did I do this time?
Jan 21 19:47:45 <DesertRose>   Test launch?
Jan 21 19:47:53 <Evie>   That was a pre-emptive strike. :-D
Jan 21 19:48:02 <Evie>   You'll do something eventually
Jan 21 19:48:08 <bynw>   LOL
Jan 21 19:48:19 <Jerusha>   But Evie, if we could launch it at a certain Torenthi Duke, maybe we will all survive
Jan 21 19:48:23 <bynw>   and you worry about me ....
Jan 21 19:48:28 <JudyWard>   Pre-emptive strike?
Jan 21 19:48:48 <DesertRose>   Henry Fitzroy died at age 16, he had a legitimate son with Katherine of Aragon who died in infancy, and I think a couple of other illegitimate ones and legitimate sons who didn't live long.
Jan 21 19:48:49 <JudyWard>   I'm all for the grand duke losing his head.
Jan 21 19:48:54 <Jerusha>   Or I could make watermelon ice cream
Jan 21 19:49:14 <DesertRose>   Yum!
Jan 21 19:49:23 <Evie>   Evie screams "VALERIAN!!!  DIE, DIE, DIE!!!!!!!!"
Jan 21 19:49:24 <JudyWard>   Or you could fill it with vodka...
Jan 21 19:49:29 <DesertRose>   (to the ice cream, not to beheading people, even people who need killin')
Jan 21 19:49:30 <Eyikl>   That's a self-fulfilling prosphsey, Evie
Jan 21 19:49:31 <Evie>   OK, that macro works too
Jan 21 19:49:33 <JudyWard>   Yes, DIE!!!!
Jan 21 19:49:35 <Jerusha>   I'm all for the grand duke losing anything and everything!
Jan 21 19:49:38 <Derynifank>   Yes!
Jan 21 19:50:07 <DesertRose>   JudyWard, you're in Texas, so surely you've heard the joke about the first question in a homicide investigation in Texas, yes?
Jan 21 19:50:08 <JudyWard>   I'm totally hooked on that game! Hurry up & write more!!!
Jan 21 19:50:20 <JudyWard>   LOL! Yes!
Jan 21 19:50:29 <Jerusha>   But we still like you, Bynw.  Really!
Jan 21 19:50:34 <DesertRose>   "Did [dead person] NEED killin'?"
Jan 21 19:50:42 <JudyWard>   Right!
Jan 21 19:50:43 <Derynifank>   What is the first question ?
Jan 21 19:50:51 <Evie>   Yeah. Sometimes we like you with a two by four, but it's nothing personal.  ;-)
Jan 21 19:50:52 <bynw>   that only works in the South DesertRose
Jan 21 19:50:54 <DesertRose>   Yup
Jan 21 19:50:54 <JudyWard>   Some people just "need killin'."
Jan 21 19:51:02 <KK>   Some people <do> need killin'.
Jan 21 19:51:03 <DesertRose>   Just like "Hold mah beer and watch 'is."
Jan 21 19:51:30 <DesertRose>   Sometimes those two expressions are even connected.  :P
Jan 21 19:51:36 <bynw>   yes they are
Jan 21 19:51:40 <JudyWard>   That's pretty much the way village justice went in the middle ages.
Jan 21 19:51:40 <Evie>   Or "Bless yore heart"
Jan 21 19:51:45 *   bynw used to live in Georgia once
Jan 21 19:52:12 <JudyWard>   That's for " He couldn't punch his way out of a paper bag, bless his heart."
Jan 21 19:52:20 <DesertRose>   Particularly when "Bless [your/their/insert pronoun here] heart" means "You're such a dipstick, you don't even KNOW how much of a dipstick you are."
Jan 21 19:52:27 <JudyWard>   It's not an insult as long as you say that.
Jan 21 19:52:38 <JudyWard>   Exactly!
Jan 21 19:52:44 <DesertRose>   Or "Couldn't pour water out of a boot with instructions on the sole"
Jan 21 19:52:51 <Evie>   LOL!
Jan 21 19:52:53 <bynw>   lol
Jan 21 19:52:59 <JudyWard>   Lou says that one.
Jan 21 19:53:07 <JudyWard>   Only not with water.
Jan 21 19:53:10 <DesertRose>   Because sometimes "Bless [whoever's] heart" is sincere and means, roughly, "Wow, that really sucks."
Jan 21 19:53:11 <DesertRose>   LOL
Jan 21 19:53:12 <Evie>   LOL!
Jan 21 19:53:18 <DesertRose>   Was Lou ever a military man, JudyWard?
Jan 21 19:53:22 <JudyWard>   Sometimes.
Jan 21 19:53:34 <JudyWard>   Yes, he was in the air force 6 yrs.
Jan 21 19:53:37 <jemler>   ask lou if he has ever read what it says on the bottom of a can of beer.
Jan 21 19:53:43 <DesertRose>   This explains much.  :)
Jan 21 19:53:50 <JudyWard>   I'll have to ask him that.
Jan 21 19:54:08 <jemler>   it says "Open other end"
Jan 21 19:54:15 <JudyWard>   LOL! Does it really?
Jan 21 19:54:16 <The_Bee>   "too lazy to ache when he's in pain." Yankee, I think.
Jan 21 19:54:28 <DesertRose>   LOL, but it's a good expression, Bee.  :)
Jan 21 19:54:33 <Evie>   Judy, I wouldn't check that out if the can is full and open. ;-)
Jan 21 19:54:36 <jemler>   look and find out! :)
Jan 21 19:54:44 <JudyWard>   LOL!
Jan 21 19:54:50 <KK>   BRB
Jan 21 19:54:51 <Evie>   LOL
Jan 21 19:55:07 <jemler>   what does it say at the top of a ladder?
Jan 21 19:55:16 <Jerusha>   Don't look down
Jan 21 19:55:18 <DesertRose>   Southerners don't have a deadlock on funny/interesting idioms.  We have a LOT of them but by no means do we have ALL the good ones. :D
Jan 21 19:55:18 <JudyWard>   No idea.
Jan 21 19:55:22 <jemler>   "Stop!"
Jan 21 19:55:32 <JudyWard>   LOL!
Jan 21 19:55:34 <Evie>   LOL
Jan 21 19:55:40 <DesertRose>   Especially if you're my stepdad, re top of ladder.
Jan 21 19:55:41 <The_Bee>   My grandma once used the phrase "the Old Harry and all."
Jan 21 19:55:57 <JudyWard>   I've got to go in a couple minutes & feed the Lou & me.
Jan 21 19:55:59 <DesertRose>   He who fell out of a tree at the age of 63 or so because he leaned too far and fell off the [expletive deleted] ladder.
Jan 21 19:56:13 <JudyWard>   Oh, no!
Jan 21 19:56:16 <DesertRose>   He lucked out.
Jan 21 19:56:33 <DesertRose>   The worst damage was a torn rotator cuff because he landed sort of sideways and jacked up his shoulder.
Jan 21 19:56:40 <DesertRose>   Oh, and his glasses were hosed up but good.
Jan 21 19:56:42 <Evie>   We finally got my granddad to stop climbing pecan trees when he turned 80
Jan 21 19:56:45 <JudyWard>   Ouch!
Jan 21 19:56:46 <Jerusha>   That is painful to heal, though
Jan 21 19:56:48 <DesertRose>   Yes.
Jan 21 19:56:54 <Derynifank>   He landed in a soft  bush?
Jan 21 19:56:56 <DesertRose>   He had to have surgery to repair the rotator cuff.
Jan 21 19:56:57 <JudyWard>   Lou is not allowed on ladders any more.
Jan 21 19:57:07 <DesertRose>   No, he just managed to land in such a way as not to damage himself too badly.
Jan 21 19:57:09 <Eyikl>   :(
Jan 21 19:57:18 <DesertRose>   Also, Florida, soil here is mostly sand and fairly soft.
Jan 21 19:57:32 <Derynifank>   Rotator cuff injuries are bad news
Jan 21 19:57:36 <DesertRose>   Yes, yes they are.
Jan 21 19:57:38 <JudyWard>   Lots of sandspurs
Jan 21 19:57:45 <DesertRose>   Yes.
Jan 21 19:57:53 <Eyikl>   What are those?
Jan 21 19:57:58 <Jerusha>   Dh had one.  The surgery was almost worse than the injury
Jan 21 19:58:00 <Derynifank>   Ouch!
Jan 21 19:58:15 <Evie>   Glad I skipped the surgery, then!
Jan 21 19:58:15 <DesertRose>   He knocked the air out of his lungs, and when he got his breath back, he realized he had to make himself get up and walk to the house, because he realized if he didn't, no one would know he'd fallen.
Jan 21 19:58:20 <Jerusha>   Months of recovery exercises
Jan 21 19:58:22 <JudyWard>   My left shoulder is a mess from handling large dogs.
Jan 21 19:58:33 <DesertRose>   Sand spurs are little plant seed things that have prickly covers.
Jan 21 19:58:42 <JudyWard>   Poor guy!
Jan 21 19:58:52 <DesertRose>   They're not that awful individually or if they get on your clothes, but they pinch a little on skin.
Jan 21 19:58:58 <Eyikl>   Bleh!
Jan 21 19:58:59 <Derynifank>   They are wicked, really hold on
Jan 21 19:59:09 <JudyWard>   I have stepped on more than my share of sandspurs in my life.
Jan 21 19:59:17 <DesertRose>   Yeah, not fun on bare skin.
Jan 21 19:59:20 <JudyWard>   Hurts like all get out!
Jan 21 19:59:35 <Jerusha>   I think I will keep my shoes on
Jan 21 20:00:00 <JudyWard>   I think that's a Southern-ism, too.
Jan 21 20:00:03 <DesertRose>   Getting them off your clothes can be *fun*, especially if you're wearing something fairly nice that you would prefer remain free of pilling/catches in the fabric.
Jan 21 20:00:06 <DesertRose>   Probably, JudyWard
Jan 21 20:00:54 <JudyWard>   I have to go! I hate to as it's so fun this week. Y'all have a great week & I'll catch you next Sunday. Except the gamers.
Jan 21 20:00:59 <DesertRose>   But (re my stepdad falling out of the tree), he'd been at the back of the property line pruning trees, and their house is on about 0.8-0.9 acre.
Jan 21 20:01:04 <DesertRose>   Okay, see you later, JudyWard
Jan 21 20:01:07 <JudyWard>   I'll be watching the gamers all week.
Jan 21 20:01:10 <JudyWard>   Bye!
Jan 21 20:01:10 <Eyikl>   I think I might have heard my mother use that term, and she's not Southern, so I'm not sure.
Jan 21 20:01:11 <Evie>   See you later!
Jan 21 20:01:13 <The_Bee>   bye JudyWard
Jan 21 20:01:16 <bynw>   cya JudyWard
Jan 21 20:01:23 <jemler>   nite judy
Jan 21 20:01:29 <Derynifank>   Bye Judyward
Jan 21 20:01:30 <Jerusha>   Bye, JudyWard
Jan 21 20:01:36 *   JudyWard has quit (Quit: CGI:IRC)
Jan 21 20:01:37 <DesertRose>   He is now not allowed to do yard work without his mobile phone in his pocket.
Jan 21 20:01:48 <DesertRose>   He's also not allowed to do stuff with ladders without a spotter any more.
Jan 21 20:01:59 <jemler>   kk got lost.
Jan 21 20:02:04 <DesertRose>   She said she'd BRB.
Jan 21 20:02:11 <DesertRose>   Maybe the phone rang?
Jan 21 20:02:13 <Jerusha>   I hope she
Jan 21 20:02:20 <Jerusha>   is not rolling dice
Jan 21 20:02:23 <DesertRose>   LOL
Jan 21 20:02:26 <Evie>   That "right back" part could be a relative thing
Jan 21 20:02:31 <Eyikl>   I'm glad he has one! My parents and I can't convince my grandparents to have one or turn it on, much less use it.
Jan 21 20:02:33 <Evie>   LOL, Jerusha!
Jan 21 20:02:39 <DesertRose>   Particularly not with the original dice roller y'all were using!
Jan 21 20:02:39 <KK>   Nope, I'm back, but was reading what was written while I was away.
Jan 21 20:03:10 <DesertRose>   He mostly uses his to play various types of solitaire games, but he does have one and use it.
Jan 21 20:03:13 <Evie>   I'm pretty sure the first dice roller was an artifact created by Valerian, and I had better luck with it than most!
Jan 21 20:03:17 <DesertRose>   LOL
Jan 21 20:03:28 <bynw>   LOL Evie
Jan 21 20:03:33 <KK>   I've got to convince my sister to use her cell phone.  We oculd text, and send pictures back and forth....
Jan 21 20:03:47 <DesertRose>   Yup
Jan 21 20:04:03 <Jerusha>   The fact that the dice roller said "Made in Dante's Hell" should have warned us
Jan 21 20:04:04 <Derynifank>   Sharing pictures is great!
Jan 21 20:04:14 <DesertRose>   My mom didn't install the Facebook app on her new phone, though, because she said she spent too much time messing around on it; now she checks FB from her laptop only.
Jan 21 20:04:21 <jemler>   if you have an iphone you could facetime or skype.
Jan 21 20:04:23 <Eyikl>   It's dinnertime, so I'll see you all next week. Good luck with relatives.
Jan 21 20:04:26 <DesertRose>   We all got new phones (changed carriers) In December.
Jan 21 20:04:29 <DesertRose>   G'night Eyikl
Jan 21 20:04:32 <jemler>   nite eyikl
Jan 21 20:04:33 <bynw>   night Eyikl

Jan 21 20:05:12 <jemler>   i still use a flip-phone. i don't text/tweet/snapchat.
Jan 21 20:05:14 <DesertRose>   Turn off the notifications.  :)
Jan 21 20:05:36 <Evie>   I have Friendly, which is a 3rd party client to let you read Facebook and FB Messenger messages
Jan 21 20:05:37 <DesertRose>   I don't Snapchat, and I have a Twitter account but I can go for ages and ages without even looking at it.
Jan 21 20:05:48 <The_Bee>   I have a cheap cellphone, and I'm not really sure what its capabiities are.
Jan 21 20:05:51 <DesertRose>   I do text, though.
Jan 21 20:05:54 <Evie>   and have my notifications set to the quietest sound on my phone
Jan 21 20:06:06 <jemler>   i text here and on FB. that's it.
Jan 21 20:06:15 <KK>   I loved my last flip phone, but came the day when it just couldn't do a lot of things I needed to do.  That ws about 4 years ago.
Jan 21 20:06:37 <DesertRose>   My mom hung on to a flip phone for the longest time and had to be dragged kicking and screaming to a smartphone.
Jan 21 20:06:39 <The_Bee>   I avoid Twitter.  too much trolling, I hear.
Jan 21 20:06:52 <Jerusha>   Dh still has a flip phone.  Bless his dinosaur hids
Jan 21 20:06:57 <Jerusha>   hide, I meant
Jan 21 20:07:02 <Derynifank>   If I didn't  text I'd never get to  talk to my grandson's
Jan 21 20:07:04 <DesertRose>   If you curate your feed carefully, Twitter can be okay, but the signal-to-noise ratio is unreal.
Jan 21 20:07:08 <Evie>   My dad only got a smartphone when his laptop got too old, and he realized that smartphones are essentially mini tablet computers, so he went ahead and got one
Jan 21 20:07:16 <KK>   I don't twitter; don't even really know how it works, not do I care.  Seems like a time sink to me.
Jan 21 20:07:25 <The_Bee>   Mine is a flip phone.  Hard to butt-dial on it.
Jan 21 20:07:31 <DesertRose>   (That is, there's a lot of noise with not a lot of stuff you actually give a hoot about on Twitter.)
Jan 21 20:07:43 <DesertRose>   True, re: butt-dialing.
Jan 21 20:07:46 <jemler>   i use an ipad, don't need a smart phone.
Jan 21 20:08:06 <bynw>   I like Twitter as a social media of choice. FB is a real time suck if you get into anything other than making posts on it
Jan 21 20:08:15 <Evie>   Grandchildren were one reason my dad broke down and got a smartphone, since their generation doesn't really do email, but they text.
Jan 21 20:08:17 <The_Bee>   I have a desktop and a laptop.
Jan 21 20:08:34 <DesertRose>   I like FB for keeping up with friends I don't get to see in person often (or at all).
Jan 21 20:08:40 <jemler>   you have 2 cats now?
Jan 21 20:08:46 <DF64>   ain't technology great
Jan 21 20:08:57 <The_Bee>   My main facebook is Words with Friends.
Jan 21 20:09:17 <bynw>   i have a desktop, laptop (on it now), tablet, smartphone, 2 raspberry pi's ... and a few servers
Jan 21 20:09:19 <Jerusha>   I don't have facebook.  Maybe someday
Jan 21 20:09:23 <DesertRose>   A couple of my closest friends from high school are more or less on the other side of the continent from me, and a close friend from elementary school is in Helsinki, so we'd NEVER get to chat if not for social media.
Jan 21 20:09:25 <jemler>   haven't played that for a while.
Jan 21 20:09:59 <Jerusha>   Do they serve you well, Bynw? :D
Jan 21 20:10:02 <Derynifank>   Heard of blackberry butvraspberry?
Jan 21 20:10:23 <Evie>   My best friend lives in the Netherlands, so if it weren't for the internet, we'd never be able to communicate...but then again, without the internet we wouldn't have met.
Jan 21 20:10:30 <DesertRose>   :)
Jan 21 20:10:33 <bynw>   Jerusha, yes they run this
Jan 21 20:10:37 <Jerusha>   All I can think of is the song "Raspberry Beret"
Jan 21 20:10:48 <bynw>   raspberrypi.org
Jan 21 20:10:53 <Evie>   Not to mention this would be a really difficult chat. All that shouting across state lines.... ;-)
Jan 21 20:11:04 <DesertRose>   I have two laptops and a desktop, plus the smartphone.
Jan 21 20:11:08 <DesertRose>   On the desktop now.
Jan 21 20:11:28 <DesertRose>   Or national borders, since Jerusha's in Canada.
Jan 21 20:11:45 <Jerusha>   And waiting for the next snowstorm
Jan 21 20:11:47 <Evie>   We'll import her
Jan 21 20:11:54 <The_Bee>   or across oceans
Jan 21 20:11:59 <Jerusha>   Please!  I'll go where it's warm!
Jan 21 20:12:03 <DesertRose>   I think with all that snow, Jerusha would probably let us import her
Jan 21 20:12:04 <DesertRose>   LOL
Jan 21 20:12:17 <Jerusha>   Sign me up!
Jan 21 20:12:17 <Evie>   LOL, well, that's not here this month. we've had Ontario weather until the past two days!
Jan 21 20:12:18 <bynw>   Jerusha, please keep it up north with you
Jan 21 20:12:37 <Jerusha>   Well, I tried, but the Portal misfunctioned
Jan 21 20:12:39 <DesertRose>   It hasn't been too warm by Floridian standards the last few weeks, but I imagine you'd still take our "cold" over what you've had!
Jan 21 20:12:51 <Jerusha>   Oh yeah
Jan 21 20:12:56 <DesertRose>   You can crash in the +3 Chair of Somnolence.
Jan 21 20:13:06 <DesertRose>   Carys will snooze in your lap when she's not on me. :)
Jan 21 20:13:10 <DF64>   it was warm today and even warmer tomorrow
Jan 21 20:13:18 <Jerusha>   Purrfect
Jan 21 20:13:20 <DesertRose>   Finally, DF64.
Jan 21 20:13:26 <Evie>   What was your average temp this week up there, Jerusha?
Jan 21 20:14:07 <Jerusha>   It's been weird. For a few days we are way above normal (0 C) and then it gets cold again.  Winter sports are up a creek
Jan 21 20:14:11 <Evie>   We've finally gone back up to normal Alabama winter weather, but it was well below freezing here for most of the past...week? Week and a half?
Jan 21 20:14:47 <Jerusha>   Now we are looking at freezing rain and snow (25 cm)
Jan 21 20:14:54 <Evie>   So once you convert temps from C to F, that's similar to here.
Jan 21 20:15:07 <The_Bee>   Half the US has been freezing, burning or flooding, it seems.
Jan 21 20:15:34 <The_Bee>   or buried in mud
Jan 21 20:15:53 <jemler>   here it is 44F/6C
Jan 21 20:16:25 <Evie>   Let's see....our low last week was around 12F, so that's what in C?  About -11C, according to Google
Jan 21 20:16:33 <Jerusha>   Fortunately, I have three coats:  warmish, cold, and I'm not going out there
Jan 21 20:16:52 <Evie>   LOL!  I needed that third coat last week!
Jan 21 20:16:56 <Jerusha>   Unless I really have to
Jan 21 20:17:50 <Evie>   Yes, it's back up to 60F today, so everyone is running around in T-shirts thinking it's a balmy spring day
Jan 21 20:18:05 <Jerusha>   I would be at the beach
Jan 21 20:18:06 <KK>   We were practically shirt-sleeve weather today, though it's getting colder midweek, with rain.
Jan 21 20:18:06 <The_Bee>   F-32 x 5/9 =c
Jan 21 20:18:26 <Evie>   Although earlier in the season, people would have been complaining about how "cold" 60F is, but not anymore after nearly two weeks of sub-freezing weather!
Jan 21 20:18:49 <DesertRose>   https://www.instagram.com/p/BeO6aNhlICo/?taken-by=azdesertrose76
Jan 21 20:18:54 <DesertRose>   Carys in the Chair of Somnolence
Jan 21 20:18:58 <The_Bee>   KK, are you in the mountains or the tidewater?
Jan 21 20:19:06 <Derynifank>   We got to 50 and that felt really balmy
Jan 21 20:19:31 <DesertRose>   I love the "I'm not going out there" coat.  :D
Jan 21 20:19:54 <bynw>   50 is sometimes shorts weather
Jan 21 20:19:58 <DF64>   she looks very comfortable
Jan 21 20:20:03 <Jerusha>   Very cozy
Jan 21 20:20:22 <DesertRose>   It's older than my kid (which is to say over twenty-five years old), but it's holding up well.
Jan 21 20:20:30 <Jerusha>   That coat hangs in the closet a lot, DR
Jan 21 20:20:40 <Derynifank>   Especially after 10 degrees with a wind chill below 0
Jan 21 20:20:45 <KK>   In the valley, between Blue Ridge and Allegheny Mts.
Jan 21 20:20:50 <DesertRose>   I call it the +3 Chair of Somnolence because, 90's decor fabric and all, it's so comfortable that everyone, human or cat, who sits in it starts to doze.
Jan 21 20:21:05 <Evie>   Yeah, my favorite was driving to work when it was only 19F (-7 C) and thinking "This is Birmingham, not freaking Ontario! GIVE ME SUNSHINE!"  Except that it *was* sunny, but still that cold!
Jan 21 20:21:11 <The_Bee>   thanks, KK just curious
Jan 21 20:21:33 <KK>   That's Shenandoah Valley, of course.
Jan 21 20:21:34 <DesertRose>   Yeah, subfreezing weather is NOT my jam.
Jan 21 20:22:01 <jemler>   wimps.
Jan 21 20:22:10 <DesertRose>   This is us:  http://www.joeydevilla.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2018/01/floridians-vs-cat-5-and-cold.jpg
Jan 21 20:22:13 <Jerusha>   Ontario is a nice place to live in that short timeframe between freezing and being eaten by blackflies and mosquitoes
Jan 21 20:22:34 <DesertRose>   Ugh.
Jan 21 20:22:38 <Evie>   LOL!
Jan 21 20:22:46 <DesertRose>   Why put up with that type of cold if you can't even get away from bitey bugs?
Jan 21 20:22:46 <DF64>   and lovebugs on your car
Jan 21 20:23:08 <Jerusha>   I sometimes wonder, DR
Jan 21 20:23:19 <DesertRose>   That's the silver lining to this winter being so (relatively, for us) cold; next summer's mosquito crop will be much diminished.
Jan 21 20:23:32 <DesertRose>   Oh, saints preserve us from love bugs.
Jan 21 20:23:47 <Jerusha>   But we don't have tornadoes (well, not many) and no hurricanes
Jan 21 20:23:48 *   bynw will go to Ontario, Toronto someday during that nice weather time
Jan 21 20:23:50 <Derynifank>   I just read an article that said all this cold woukd  not mean fewer bugs next dumner. Bummer!
Jan 21 20:23:58 <DesertRose>   Ugh.  Bummer indeed!
Jan 21 20:24:02 <Derynifank>   Summer
Jan 21 20:24:11 <Evie>   One of the side effects of this winter being colder than most around here is that we are having the plague of stink bugs coming indoors looking for a safe place to shelter.
Jan 21 20:24:17 <Derynifank>   A strikes again
Jan 21 20:24:23 <Derynifank>   A
Jan 21 20:24:23 <Evie>   They don't bite, but they're a nuisance.
Jan 21 20:24:24 <Jerusha>   Oh yuk
Jan 21 20:24:39 <DesertRose>   I bet it's all the precipitation that means we still have to deal with mosquitoes.  All the stagnant water.
Jan 21 20:24:48 <Jerusha>   We have had a bumper crop of mice, though
Jan 21 20:25:04 <Evie>   That's fun
Jan 21 20:25:16 <Jerusha>   And in our cold room.  Go figure!
Jan 21 20:25:21 <DesertRose>   If I have mice, two someones are falling down on the job.
Jan 21 20:25:29 <DesertRose>   Carys, and the building pest control contract people.  :P
Jan 21 20:25:51 <Jerusha>   We live trap them, then DH takes them on the long walk
Jan 21 20:25:58 <The_Bee>   Melantha once caught a mouse in my apartment.
Jan 21 20:26:06 <DesertRose>   The whippets don't go after them?
Jan 21 20:26:12 <DesertRose>   I guess that's not much their jam.
Jan 21 20:26:14 <Evie>   We always know if a mouse has managed to get in the house, because Luke is an expert level mouser. Lizards are Gigi's prey of choice.
Jan 21 20:26:24 <DesertRose>   They're racing dogs, no?  (as far as what they're bred for)
Jan 21 20:26:28 <The_Bee>   Terriers are ratters
Jan 21 20:26:31 <Evie>   She just watches Luke harass mice with academic interest
Jan 21 20:26:34 <Jerusha>   Our 15 year old matron ignores them
Jan 21 20:26:35 <DesertRose>   LOL
Jan 21 20:26:53 <DesertRose>   PJ is indiscriminate.  If it moves, she'll pounce on it.
Jan 21 20:27:01 <DesertRose>   Lizards, small snakes . . .
Jan 21 20:27:17 <KK>   Jerusha, you do know that mice will come back if they only go on the long walk.  Unless you mean the looooong walk.  ;-)
Jan 21 20:27:18 <DesertRose>   Carys doesn't often have prey readily to hand that isn't a cat toy.
Jan 21 20:27:22 <The_Bee>   Luke probably had to feed himself when he was on his own.
Jan 21 20:27:48 <DesertRose>   Merlin lets Guinevere the hamster walk all over him, so I doubt he's any use as a mouser, despite being a Manx.
Jan 21 20:28:00 <Jerusha>   I mean the very long walk.  We learned our lesson. One mouse came back 15 times!
Jan 21 20:28:32 <KK>   I man, they can come back from miles away.  Amazing little buggers.
Jan 21 20:28:33 <Evie>   LOL! How did you know it was the same mouse?
Jan 21 20:28:59 <The_Bee>   DR. do Manx  cats walk with a rabbity hop?
Jan 21 20:29:00 <Jerusha>   \Well, we didn't exactly, but it probably was
Jan 21 20:29:01 <DesertRose>   Yes
Jan 21 20:29:28 <KK>   I assume you marked it.  A friend in Ireland did that, marked its tail with magic marker.  It was definitely the same mouse.  But he's a Buddhist, and didn't want to harm them.
Jan 21 20:29:30 <DesertRose>   Their hindquarters are a little weird, as cat backsides go, so they have a breed-distinct running.
Jan 21 20:29:33 <Jerusha>   DH took one all the way up to the cottage.  That one is not coming back!
Jan 21 20:30:01 <Evie>   LOL! But it might move into the cottage
Jan 21 20:30:03 <DesertRose>   They walk more or less like any cat, but when they run, they look like a rabbit, at least on the back half.
Jan 21 20:30:28 <The_Bee>   I wonder if that's where the notion of cat/rabbit crosses came from.
Jan 21 20:30:31 <KK>   Manxes are very cute.
Jan 21 20:30:46 <DesertRose>   But supposedly the Manx breed were prized as ship's cats, whose primary job would have been keeping rodents out of the sailors' food stores.
Jan 21 20:31:06 <DesertRose>   Do you know the last British Navy ship's cat was retired some time in the 1980's?
Jan 21 20:31:17 <DesertRose>   I had no idea that ship's cats had been a thing for that long.
Jan 21 20:31:47 <Jerusha>   Redents were not welcome on ships. Or anywhere else for that matter
Jan 21 20:31:51 *   bynw has a cute bengal sitting next to him
Jan 21 20:31:53 <KK>   Our Nicholas is descended from cats who sailed with the Viking longships.  Vermin control has always been important on ships.
Jan 21 20:32:05 <DesertRose>   As in, I knew the tradition of having a cat on the ship went way back, but I had no idea it had continued into my lifetime.
Jan 21 20:32:11 <Evie>   Is he a ginger tabby, KK?
Jan 21 20:32:13 <Jerusha>   Oh yes, bengals are cute!
Jan 21 20:32:17 <KK>   Yep.
Jan 21 20:32:32 <KK>   And rough-coated, to better shed sea spray.
Jan 21 20:32:35 <DesertRose>   bynw, have you seen the short video of the Bengal (or Bengal mix) kitty in the ball pit?
Jan 21 20:32:42 <bynw>   nope
Jan 21 20:33:08 <DesertRose>   Hang on, lemme find it.  It's cute.
Jan 21 20:33:52 <DesertRose>   https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EoY2iswF2Dg
Jan 21 20:33:56 <DesertRose>   His name is Boomer
Jan 21 20:35:23 <DesertRose>   Part of the legend of Manx cats is that the reason they have no tail (or next to no tail) is that their ancestor's tail got caught when the gangway closed.
Jan 21 20:35:28 <DesertRose>   Which, ow.
Jan 21 20:36:08 <bynw>   such a cute kitten
Jan 21 20:36:25 <bynw>   mine really arent kittens any more but shhhhhh dont tell them that
Jan 21 20:37:00 <KK>   Loved the bit where be dove into the pit and then looked out upside-down through the hole, with manic expression.  Bynw, do your gitls leap that high?
Jan 21 20:37:01 <Evie>   [video]  LOL!  I follow Catmantoo on Instagram.  :-D
Jan 21 20:37:01 <DesertRose>   They're big kittens.
Jan 21 20:37:19 <jemler>   oyur dog would do that.
Jan 21 20:37:21 <bynw>   not so much any more
Jan 21 20:37:31 <DesertRose>   Given that Bynw's girls broke their first cat tree, I'd bet they did at least when they were younger!
Jan 21 20:37:49 <bynw>   yeah they did at one time leap rather high
Jan 21 20:38:59 <Jerusha>   Very cute
Jan 21 20:39:15 <DesertRose>   And apparently they ran very quickly, too!  (re Bynw's kitty girls)
Jan 21 20:39:31 <Evie>   Sophia's kitten in BoP is based on Bengal cats
Jan 21 20:39:56 <DesertRose>   They're gorgeous cats, but "high energy" is a polite descriptor.  :)
Jan 21 20:40:06 <Evie>   Yeah.  :-D
Jan 21 20:40:23 <Evie>   Do yours like water, Bynw? I know that some do.
Jan 21 20:40:39 <Jerusha>   Well, I must go and tame the laundry monster.  Nighters everyone!
Jan 21 20:40:52 <jemler>   nite jerusha
Jan 21 20:40:53 <Evie>   Good night
Jan 21 20:40:54 <DesertRose>   Okay, go forth and make sure the clothes don't walk on their own!
Jan 21 20:40:55 <The_Bee>   nighters, Jerusha
Jan 21 20:40:57 <DesertRose>   Night, Jerusha
Jan 21 20:41:04 <Evie>   Don't roll dice for that!
Jan 21 20:41:07 <Derynifank>   Night
Jan 21 20:41:07 <DesertRose>   ROFL
Jan 21 20:41:26 <Jerusha>   You beat me to it, Evie! :D
Jan 21 20:41:38 *   Jerusha has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
Jan 21 20:42:11 <Evie>   We've had some craptastic luck with dice rolls in the role-playing game, KK
Jan 21 20:42:18 <Evie>   If you're wondering what that was about.  :-D
Jan 21 20:42:40 <jemler>   well, i'm gonna take off. see you all next week.
Jan 21 20:43:03 <KK>   Haven't had time to check that out, alas.  SOmeday....
Jan 21 20:43:14 <Evie>   It was to the point that we made a hasty and undignified retreat from our original dice roller to start using the one here in the chatroom, since it seems to yield better results
Jan 21 20:43:44 *   DF64 has quit (Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client)
Jan 21 20:43:54 <Evie>   Or at least less potentially lethal ones. For us, that is!

Jan 21 20:44:08 <bynw>   my kagi kitten sleeping next to me right now
Jan 21 20:44:12 <KK>   But I must wend now.  I've lost three days dealing with LBM's pneumonia adventure, and will probably lost most of tomorrow as well, once I get her sprung from hospital.  See you guys next week..
Jan 21 20:44:26 <Evie>   Awww
Jan 21 20:44:26 <Derynifank>   I need to go too. Have a great week everyone
Jan 21 20:44:32 <jemler>   noite kk.
Jan 21 20:44:37 <Evie>   Bye, KK!
Jan 21 20:44:39 *   KK steps onto her Portal , wavesgood night, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.
Jan 21 20:44:39 <bynw>   have a good night KK
Jan 21 20:44:42 <Derynifank>   Night all
Jan 21 20:44:45 <bynw>   prayers for LBM
Jan 21 20:44:55 <Evie>   Yes, mine too
Jan 21 20:45:00 <KK>   Thanks, Bynw.
Jan 21 20:45:05 <KK>   Nighters to all.
Jan 21 20:45:05 <DesertRose>   Night, KK.
Jan 21 20:45:11 *   KK has quit (Quit: CGI:IRC)
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
