Okay, fair enough, Evie.  ;)

I didn't think about people not knowing what a site map is, so here's a link to Wikipedia's definition of the term.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Site_map

When I proposed the idea, I was thinking along the lines of the second bullet point on Wikipedia: a (possibly hierarchical) listing visible to forum members and people browsing the forum of the various parts of the forum and how to get there.
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

That being said, when you click one of the "Show unread posts since last visit" links (there's one at the upper left of the main screen and another at the very bottom of the forum), if there aren't any unread posts, it will give you an option to "Click here to show all unread posts," which is sometimes worth checking.
Cool, thanks!

So how are we doing with the changes to the forum?

Those changes being:
  • Labeling the Shoutbox as "Shoutbox"
  • Placing the chat room links under their own heading, labeled "Chatroom"
  • Changing the "Places" heading to "General Information and Links"

Have the changes helped?  Made it worse?  No difference?

Are there any other changes we might need to look at making?

I like the Chatroom links in their own folder. That works well.

I think it looks good, DesertRose.  I notice that on the chatroom links, one says it links to the Deryni chatroom and another says it links to the Deryni Destinations chatroom.  Newcomers might not realize those are the same chatroom, so maybe we should keep that consistent.  It might also be helpful to put a post somewhere in that section of the board about how one can set up one's own IRC client (such as IceChat or mIRC) to go to the #deryni_destinations chatroom on the Otherworlders server.  Granted, the exact way to do so will differ from chat client to chat client, but having the server name, channel name, and port number (I think it is?) would be helpful for someone who knows a few IRC basics and wants to just download their own IRC software rather than using our web-based options.  We may already have a thread somewhere that deals with all of that info.  It's been so long ago since I set up Icechat, I can't remember anymore if I looked up the requisite info on the forum or if I had to ask Bynw for help, or possibly I just made semi-educated guesses and winged it.

I corrected all the chatroom links so that they all say they go to the Deryni Destinations chatroom, since that is the actual name of the IRC channel.

I've been handling chatters who want to set up an IRC client on a case-by-case basis, because a lot of people are cool and even happy with using the browser-based clients, but we could set up a thread with the basic info for those who would like to use an independent chat program.  I think trying to do it for every possible IRC client out there is probably making more work for ourselves than is necessary or even wanted, though.

Yes, I just meant the basic info.  There's no sense in trying to second-guess every conceivable chat client out there that someone might want to try, but they should all need the same basic information to connect to our chat channel.

I'm grateful for all you admins do to keep the site running smoothly. It's hard to remember but I think were I to join now I would find it a lot easier to navigate around, especially to find the link to the chat room.
Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered;
    let those who hate him flee before him.
As smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
    as wax melts before the fire,
    let the wicked perish before God.

Okay, there is now a dedicated section under "Chatroom" that has the information for people who'd like to use a stand-alone IRC client for chat, and I also decided to put a list of commonly used IRC commands under that heading.
