happy Winter Solstice
« on: December 21, 2017, 02:07:11 pm »
As I could find no prior thread for the shortest day of the year, I decided it was time we had one.

Wishing everyone a warm, cozy Winter Solstice. May all your preparations for the coming holiday be fulfilled.

I work in two offices with no windows (at least none that are in the area where I work).  Every day feels like the shortest one, as far as my daily amount of sunlight is concerned! LOL!  Though I'll second the hopes for warmth and coziness for everyone.  :)

Happy Winter Solstice! Just out of curiousity....WERE there once Pagan Deryni, and what would be different or familiar in terms of ritual magic concerning the way they marked the arrival of Winter Solsitce?

Just leaving y'all with a thought......

I seem to recall there was one short story in one of the anthologies that had Alaric Morgan judging a Norseman (or Northman?) on trial, and he came from a pagan culture.  So if there were Deryni from that culture, I would imagine they would also be pagan.  Unfortunately I can't remember any details from that story, including the title, since I only read it the one time years ago.

Happy solstice to you all.  I'm curious to know which of us has the shortest day (maybe Jerusha ?). 7hrs 37 mins here.

The story was called "Trial," and it appears in the collection of short stories, all written by KK, called The Deryni Archives.  IIRC, it's the last story in the book, since the stories are arranged in order of internal chronology.

And yes, Ferris the swordsmith/traveling salesman of swords who is on trial, having been blamed for raping and killing a young woman he never so much as touched, is from Eistenfalla and he mentions at one point believing in a deity he calls the All-Father, which is one of the epithets for Odin in real-world Norse mythology.

I would assume, from what I know of modern-day Asatru (which is what current believers in the Norse pantheon name their faith), that Ferris and his people likely did have some traditions around the winter solstice.  (I'll spare you the dissertation on Roman history and the emperor Constantine's conversion to Christianity and its relation to the date of Christmas. :P )

As to pagan Deryni, a number of elements of Deryni practice are drawn from the Western ceremonial magic(k) systems, which are of disputed provenance but parts of those systems may well predate Christianity.  There are thus probably some elements in Deryni ritual that hearken back to pre-Christian times in the Eleven Kingdoms.  KK even implied as much, IIRC, in Deryni Magic.

But yes.  It is the solstice; the longest night in the Northern Hemisphere and the longest day in the Southern Hemisphere.  Bright blessing of the day!

Happy Solistice.
Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered;
    let those who hate him flee before him.
As smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
    as wax melts before the fire,
    let the wicked perish before God.
(Psalm 68 vv1-2)

Happy Winter Solstice to all.  And yeah, I think I have the shortest night.  And likely the coldest (at least on the forum - there are colder places on Earth).
From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggity beasties and things that go bump in the night...good Lord deliver us!

We are forever resurrecting threads from the dead (birthday threads are the big candidates, because it's just silly to make a new thread every year), and I didn't think about it being the summer solstice on the other side of the equator.  Necro away!  :D

I'd happily swap for a summer solistice here.
Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered;
    let those who hate him flee before him.

((Edited to move to the new Twelfth night post))
Enjoy your Twelfth Night festivities. May your soul be knighted for all the goodness you have done in the past year.
May your holidays have been wondrous and may they end on a warm joyous note with good tidings to bless the coming year.
