Evie's daughter's mystery allergy
« on: November 20, 2017, 12:27:13 pm »
Those of you who made it to chat last night already heard part of this story, but for those who weren't there, I got a call from my daughter just as I was getting off work on Friday, stating that she had started having some swelling around her lips and that it felt like her throat was starting to swell also. She had already texted a friend of ours who is a nurse to ask her what she needed to do, and our friend had told her to take Benadryl immediately, so she had stopped by her workplace (she was on her break) just long enough to tell them she needed to go to the store around the corner to buy some. She was calling me en route to the store because she wanted to have someone on the line who was aware of what was going on and her location in case anything happened.  She was able to purchase the Benadryl and take two of them, and also found a friend who works at that store to keep an eye on her, but when she planned to return to work just long enough to tell them she needed to head to the ER, she realized she was too lightheaded by that point to drive herself. Thankfully my husband was working close by, and the Benadryl in her system helped keep the swelling at bay long enough for him to get her to the hospital, where I met them shortly afterwards. By the time I arrived, they had already hooked her up to an IV and given her more Benadryl, some Zyrtec, and I think some other drugs to get the swelling down.  That took a couple of hours, but eventually she was allowed to be discharged.  They gave her a prescription of steroids and told her to continue the Benadryl if needed, and suggested following up with her doctor and looking into getting allergy tested and possibly needing to carry an Epipen.

So we thought the worst was over (and given that "the worst" includes the possibility of not breathing, I suppose it was!), but she battled off and on nausea during the first day taking the steroids. That seems to have passed now, but beginning on Sunday morning she began breaking out in a bad rash with large welts all over her body. Benadryl helps the rash and reduces it to small pinpricks, but as soon as the dose wears off, they are back again.

She has a doctor's visit for this afternoon, so pray that we can get this allergic reaction under control, and that she can get a referral to someone who can figure out what triggered all this in the first place. We have no idea if it's something easily avoidable or not, or what she can do to prevent this from happening again.  When she was on her break, she was eating something she has eaten on a regular basis for years, and she said her first hint of anything unusual was when she felt a stinging sensation when she rubbed her lips on her napkin.  (It was a paper napkin, so that rules out a detergent allergy.)  And to complicate matters, she is needle phobic, so preferably we need to find an allergy specialist who can find out what is going on with her with as few needle sticks as possible.

Quick update--DD is on her way back to the ER. She started having problems while out with a friend. On my way to meet them there now. Prayers, please!

Oh dear. I had hoped your DD was feeling better.
Sorry to hear it, what ever it is, sprang up again.
I am sending many healing thoughts to your DD and hope this will soon be cured.

She ended up not having to go to the ER. She already had a doctor's appointment scheduled, so they were able to work her in earlier and make sure she was safe. The theory at this point is that as the IV meds and steroids began to wear off, the steroid prescription she had at home wasn't strong enough, so she was tapering off too quickly. She is on a new steroid and also has a brand new generic-brand Epipen substitute.  Unfortunately she has to be symptom free and have all meds out of her system for a certain amount of time before she can do allergy testing, but the doc is going to set up an appointment with an allergist.

Oh dear.  I hope everything gets under control quickly.  Somehow having to be symptom free and all meds out of DD's system before allergy testing seem s bit much to ask, but I understand the concept.  My thoughts are with you both for a speedy recovery and answers that can easily prevent future recurrences.

I'll add my well wishing to the pot.

As someone who has suffered allergies (and asthma...the one-two-punch) to all things "nature & critter", your daughter has my understanding and sympathies.  And from another needle-phobe, I hope she finds out what to avoid or a non-needle method of treatment.

 :(

Yeah, the problem with allergy testing is that you have to be clear of the other allergic reaction AND off all antihistamines and anti-inflammatory meds because otherwise the testing process may yield false positives if the previous reaction hasn't cleared up and false negatives if you're taking medications that suppress the allergic response.

It sucks.   :(

Evie, holding up your DD and your family in general.  *hugs*

So sorry to hear about your daughter's ordeal, Evie! I forgot what day it was & missed the chat Sunday.  I hope they can find out what it is. You can suddenly become allergic to something that you have used or eaten all your life, like a sudden allergy to tomatoes or some other food. You said she was eating something that never bothered her before, so can't rule that out. Am sending you & her good thoughts & prayers for her speedy recovery. Where's a good Healer when you need one!!
