Oct 29 19:17:55 <DesertRose>   Hi KK!
Oct 29 19:17:56 <Evie>   Hi KK
Oct 29 19:17:56 <Jemler>   hi kk
Oct 29 19:17:58 <The_Bee>   Hi KK
Oct 29 19:18:00 <JudyWard>   Yes, let's keep the band.
Oct 29 19:18:03 <Jerusha>   So do mosquitoes, but we had too much rain this year for that
Oct 29 19:18:03 <DesertRose>   Indeed.
Oct 29 19:18:04 <JudyWard>   Hi, KK
Oct 29 19:18:05 <Jerusha>   Hi KK
Oct 29 19:18:08 <KK>   Hello, all.
Oct 29 19:18:29 <DesertRose>   Even if we down here in the (ha!) Sunshine State get tired of people playing "Rock You Like A Hurricane" intermittently between June and November.  :D
Oct 29 19:18:37 <Jerusha>   How has your week been, KK?
Oct 29 19:18:48 <JudyWard>   LOL, DR
Oct 29 19:19:04 <Derynifank>   Hi KK
Oct 29 19:19:17 <KK>   Oh, busy.  Wasn't helped by a back attack that sent me to urgent care yesterday to get drugs.
Oct 29 19:19:24 <DesertRose>   I don't know what clueless dipstick gave Florida the nickname "The Sunshine State."  Clearly not someone who spent any amount of time in this rain-soaked, colossally humid joint!
Oct 29 19:19:27 <Evie>   :-(
Oct 29 19:19:28 <DesertRose>   OW, KK!  Not fun!
Oct 29 19:19:29 <Jerusha>   Oh dear!
Oct 29 19:19:34 <JudyWard>   Ouch!
Oct 29 19:19:39 <The_Bee>   Yike!  Has this happened before?
Oct 29 19:19:44 <DesertRose>   Sciatica, or some other back problem?
Oct 29 19:20:18 <KK>   I think I pulled a muscle doing wall push-ups for my physiotherapist on Thursday.
Oct 29 19:20:39 <Jerusha>   Wait, that's not supposed to happen, is it?
Oct 29 19:20:39 <Evie>   :-(
Oct 29 19:20:56 <JudyWard>   Bad for your PT to make you worse!.
Oct 29 19:20:59 <Derynifank>   Did they x-ray it? I went to EL for back pain and found out I had a spontaneous  fracture of 2 vertebra
Oct 29 19:21:11 <Derynifank>   ES
Oct 29 19:21:13 <Jerusha>   Yike
Oct 29 19:21:29 <KK>   No.  I felt a twinge at the time, but didn't expect back pain to wake up early Saturday morning.
Oct 29 19:21:45 <DesertRose>   Ouch
Oct 29 19:21:55 <Jerusha>   Is it better yet?
Oct 29 19:21:58 <The_Bee>   The NOoPain, No Gain theory is not the best. IMHO
Oct 29 19:22:22 <Evie>   Ow. That's how I felt when I tore the ligament in my shoulder a few years back. A brief twinge, but that was it until the next morning when I couldn't lift my arm without pain.
Oct 29 19:22:36 <KK>   No x-ray.  It wasn't spinal; more side back, definitely muscle.  They gave me a shot to reduce inflamation, and 2 scrips for pain and swelling.  Worked a charm.
Oct 29 19:22:44 <Derynifank>   Not fun. Treatment involved a brace and a kup hop
Oct 29 19:22:46 <DesertRose>   Soft tissue injuries are like that.  Swelling, I guess, makes the pain worse the next day.
Oct 29 19:22:58 <Jerusha>   Glad it is better, KK
Oct 29 19:23:11 <JudyWard>   Yes, & makes other muscles hurt, too.
Oct 29 19:23:16 <DesertRose>   I'm not a fan of no pain, no gain either.  Even in physical therapy, if it's worse than "uncomfortable," it doesn't need to happen.
Oct 29 19:23:27 <Derynifank>   Glad it's better
Oct 29 19:23:34 <DesertRose>   Well, glad it's better at least.  But still, owie
Oct 29 19:23:35 <KK>   Yeah, and the physio was for shoulder pain incurred when I overdid it back in June or so, over at Curves.  Won't try <that> again.

Oct 29 19:23:56 <Evie>   Hi Bynw
Oct 29 19:23:57 <DesertRose>   Hi bynw
Oct 29 19:24:00 <Jerusha>   Hi Bynw

Oct 29 19:24:12 <JudyWard>   Hi, bynw
Oct 29 19:24:12 <Jemler>   hi bynw
Oct 29 19:24:22 <bynw>   busy weekend here moving into a new apt ... one of the kitties is not liking the change
Oct 29 19:24:26 <DesertRose>   BRB
Oct 29 19:24:32 <Jerusha>   Perhaps the gym is not a good idea, KK
Oct 29 19:24:36 <DesertRose>   Aw, poor kitty.  Kagi or Andi that's not a happy camper?
Oct 29 19:24:42 <bynw>   its Andi
Oct 29 19:24:54 <Jerusha>   Change can be hard
Oct 29 19:24:59 <JudyWard>   BRB, gotta start getting ready to fix dinner.
Oct 29 19:25:08 <Derynifank>   Cats are not fans of change
Oct 29 19:25:26 <bynw>   no they aren't
Oct 29 19:25:48 <The_Bee>   I plugged in my crockpot several hours ago.  When I checked just now the food wasstill cold.
Oct 29 19:26:04 <bynw>   not turned on?
Oct 29 19:26:06 <KK>   Did you turn it on, Bee?
Oct 29 19:26:12 <Evie>   That's not good.  Has it stopped working, or just turned on too low?
Oct 29 19:26:34 <bynw>   we did the crockpot thing this morning and it smells yummy right now
Oct 29 19:26:57 <The_Bee>   turned on. same thing happened with my coffee-maker.  I tried flipping the circuit-breaker, but it didn't help.
Oct 29 19:26:59 <Evie>   Or yeah, it does help if it's actually on. :-) But sometimes if it's on Low but not heating up enough, try High
Oct 29 19:27:05 <Jerusha>   If food is still cold after several hours, it might not be safe now
Oct 29 19:27:26 <The_Bee>   I have tried high.
Oct 29 19:27:28 <Derynifank>   Oh no! Outlet problem or dead crockpot. My toaster broke, won't keep the bread down so it can tiast.
Oct 29 19:27:30 <Evie>   Are they both plugged into the same outlet?
Oct 29 19:27:45 <The_Bee>   coffee and crock? yes
Oct 29 19:27:48 <Jerusha>   I blame Loris
Oct 29 19:28:08 <Evie>   That's probably your problem then. For some reason that outlet is dead.
Oct 29 19:28:16 <KK>   Sounds like the outlet.  Is it on its own circuit braker?
Oct 29 19:28:24 <Derynifank>   Maybe the outlet is the problem
Oct 29 19:28:29 <Evie>   Does your apartment have an electrician who can troubleshoot what's going on with it?
Oct 29 19:29:09 <Derynifank>   Try it it a different outlet
Oct 29 19:29:17 <The_Bee>   We have service workers
Oct 29 19:29:45 <Jerusha>   Sounds like a service call is needed
Oct 29 19:30:15 <Derynifank>   Try a different outlet first
Oct 29 19:30:59 <Evie>   Yes, but even if the crock pot works when plugged into a different outlet, it might be best to prepare something else for dinner if that food has been sitting out at room temperature for a few hours
Oct 29 19:31:13 <Jerusha>   Definitely
Oct 29 19:31:33 <Jerusha>   No good will come from it
Oct 29 19:31:36 <Derynifank>   Absolutely
Oct 29 19:31:41 <Evie>   Though I would definitely test another outlet to see if the crock pot and coffee maker will work from it
Oct 29 19:32:12 <Evie>   Because if both appliances work on a different outlet, that narrows down what your problem is.
Oct 29 19:32:14 <JudyWard>   I always start out a crock pot on hi & then turn it down.
Oct 29 19:32:47 <Derynifank>   They didn'the have these  problems in Kekson's time. No electricity
Oct 29 19:33:12 <JudyWard>   Hard to throw out what would have been good food. 8-(
Oct 29 19:33:18 <Jerusha>   I would not have wanted to spend my days turning the spit though
Oct 29 19:33:21 <Evie>   True. Caverns and root cellars tend to keep pretty constant temperature without it
Oct 29 19:33:44 <Derynifank>   They had servants to do that
Oct 29 19:34:05 <JudyWard>   All their meat in those days tended to be fresh off the source, I imagine.
Oct 29 19:34:19 <The_Bee>   I'm trying another outlet.  I'll have to wait and see.
Oct 29 19:34:50 <Evie>   There is an ancient Anglo-Saxon text I had to translate once that hinted that the Anglo-Saxons had some form of refrigeration, but unfortunately I don't recall which of our various texts that mention was in, because I'd love to go back and study it some more
Oct 29 19:35:16 <The_Bee>   an ice box? or ice house?
Oct 29 19:35:18 <Jerusha>   Go back to Saxon England?
Oct 29 19:35:24 <Evie>   It was a reference I completely missed while attempting to translate it, but our professor pointed it out as one of those things that baffle scholars.
Oct 29 19:35:35 <JudyWard>   I think they tended to keep stuff cold in cold running springs.
Oct 29 19:35:48 <Jerusha>   Were you translating from the old English?
Oct 29 19:35:52 <Evie>   Yes
Oct 29 19:36:00 <Jerusha>   Envy
Oct 29 19:36:06 <JudyWard>   Wow! Old English is hard!
Oct 29 19:36:08 <Evie>   No, this was something capable of freezing alcohol
Oct 29 19:36:23 <JudyWard>   That would be REALLY cold.
Oct 29 19:36:28 <The_Bee>   I've read about ice houses.  IIRC packed withstraw to delay melting

Oct 29 19:36:38 <Jerusha>   Old English is capable of freezing alcohol? (Where are the smiley faces?)
Oct 29 19:36:39 <Derynifank>   Saxon also generally lived in very cold climes so easier to keep things cool
Oct 29 19:36:41 <The_Bee>   hi dennis
Oct 29 19:36:50 <Dennis>   Hi, Bee!
Oct 29 19:36:53 <Evie>   Well, yes, it's a totally different language, closer to Old High German than to modern English
Oct 29 19:36:57 <Jerusha>   Hi Dennis
Oct 29 19:37:23 <The_Bee>   Would they have had dry ice back then?
Oct 29 19:37:33 <KK>   No dry ice.
Oct 29 19:37:33 <Evie>   I doubt it
Oct 29 19:37:44 <Evie>   I can't imagine how they would freeze the CO2
Oct 29 19:37:57 <KK>   We had an o;d ice house at Holybrooke, though it hadn't been used in decades.
Oct 29 19:38:22 <Jerusha>   Cold root cellars would be about the best they could do.  I don't think there was natural ice to use.
Oct 29 19:38:40 <Evie>   I can't remember much about the text now, but I think it was something underground, or in a pit, or something
Oct 29 19:38:43 <Jerusha>   Maybe in Scotland?
Oct 29 19:38:48 <DesertRose>   Hi Dennis
Oct 29 19:39:01 <JudyWard>   Hi, Dennis
Oct 29 19:39:09 <Derynifank>   Ice men used to deliver blocks of ice.Wonder how they froze it
Oct 29 19:39:13 <Evie>   No natural ice where?
Oct 29 19:39:14 <JudyWard>   Had to go turn the burgers.

Oct 29 19:39:32 <Jerusha>   In England.  We have more than enough here!
Oct 29 19:39:38 <JudyWard>   The Romans brought ice & snow down from the mountains to Rome.
Oct 29 19:39:41 <DomMelchior>   Good evening folks
Oct 29 19:39:43 <Jerusha>   Hi DomMelchio
Oct 29 19:39:51 <Evie>   England during a little ice age got lots of snow and ice
Oct 29 19:40:16 <KK>   The old ice houses used to use ice cut in winter and dragged to the location on sledges, then covered with straw.  By the end of summer, there wasn't any ice eft, of ocurse.
Oct 29 19:40:23 <KK>   left, of course.
Oct 29 19:40:26 <Jerusha>   But not in the Medieval warm age
Oct 29 19:40:29 <Dennis>   Hi, All!
Oct 29 19:41:14 <Evie>   Mountain lakes? Packed snow? Scandinavia, land of maurauding Vikings?  ;-)
Oct 29 19:41:39 <DesertRose>   Hi DomMelchior
Oct 29 19:41:41 <JudyWard>   I'm just glad we have refrigerators & freezers now.
Oct 29 19:41:51 <Evie>   Granted, the mountains in England aren't all that high, at least not compared to some like the Alps.
Oct 29 19:41:56 <Jemler>   hi dennis, dommelchior
Oct 29 19:42:01 <Jerusha>   We have come to sack your monetary, but we bring ice!
Oct 29 19:42:32 <DomMelchior>   That's just cold, Jerusha
Oct 29 19:42:41 <Evie>   "We brought ice.  Will trade for gold.  No? OK, we'll sack the place, then!"
Oct 29 19:42:48 <Jerusha>   Monastery, dang autocorrect
Oct 29 19:43:03 <Evie>   For the Vikings, it was essentially the same thing.
Oct 29 19:43:21 <Evie>   "Oh look, there's a cross up top. That's the local bank, isn't it?"
Oct 29 19:43:31 <Derynifank>   I think auto correct is possessed by a demon
Oct 29 19:43:34 <Jerusha>   Not so far from true!
Oct 29 19:43:39 <Derynifank>   Pottery
Oct 29 19:43:39 <DesertRose>   The "Little Ice Age" that hit England (and most of the rest of Northern/Northwestern Europe) ran from 1250-1300 through about 1900. :)
Oct 29 19:44:33 <DesertRose>   So a bit late for Old English (I'm thinking that would have been Middle English, regardless of which date [1250 or 1300] one uses for the beginning.)
Oct 29 19:44:42 <The_Bee>   That's how Hans Brinker and friends could skate on the canals.
Oct 29 19:44:43 <JudyWard>   I read somewhere that we are really just now at the end of the last ice age.
Oct 29 19:45:00 <Evie>   Yeah, probably Middle then
Oct 29 19:45:24 *   Jerusha has quit (Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client)
Oct 29 19:45:45 <Evie>   Even in Victorian times, ice skating was a popular recreation when lakes and streams froze over
Oct 29 19:46:44 <DesertRose>   Yes, I always wanted to learn to ice skate, but in coastal South Carolina, ice skating doesn't happen outdoors.
Oct 29 19:46:51 <JudyWard>   The stove is beeping me. I need to take off the burgers & assemble them. BBS.
Oct 29 19:47:15 <DesertRose>   And the Charleston area didn't get an indoor ice rink until I was about 21 or 22 and had already hosed up my left knee to the point that it needed surgery.  :(
Oct 29 19:47:31 <The_Bee>   :(
Oct 29 19:47:34 <KK>   How'd you that, DR?
Oct 29 19:47:39 <DesertRose>   So I have yet to learn to ice skate, and I assume at this point that the ship has sailed because I'm just too rickety.
Oct 29 19:47:47 <DesertRose>   Step aerobics of all the ridiculous things.
Oct 29 19:48:04 <Derynifank>   I TRIED ROLLER SKATES
Oct 29 19:48:11 <KK>   Yep, that's a bum way to rack up a knee.
Oct 29 19:48:15 <The_Bee>   I've never learned to skate.  I could only stand up on double runners.
Oct 29 19:48:18 <DesertRose>   I managed to tear the medial meniscus and get the torn bit stuck in the groove on the top of the tibia where the kneecap is supposed to slide.
Oct 29 19:48:20 <DesertRose>   Which, ow.
Oct 29 19:48:30 <Derynifank>   ended up in a holly bush so gave that up
Oct 29 19:48:37 <DesertRose>   Also, crap gene pool for osteoarthritis.
Oct 29 19:48:43 <KK>   Defininitely ick!
Oct 29 19:48:51 <DesertRose>   I wound up diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my right thumb at the ripe old age of 23.
Oct 29 19:49:09 <KK>   That's a bum deal fromyour genes!
Oct 29 19:49:21 <DesertRose>   Roller skating I could do.  I just didn't get a chance to learn to ice skate before my body noped out.
Oct 29 19:50:02 <KK>   I tried ice skating in my early teens, but ankles didn't like it.  Ended up getting my skating badge in girl scouts on roller skates.
Oct 29 19:50:05 <DesertRose>   Although I doubt I dare attempt to roller skate any more either, since my body probably wouldn't react well to any falling on my backside!
Oct 29 19:50:25 <The_Bee>   The only vehicle I can manage is an adult trike.
Oct 29 19:50:27 <KK>   Those wer the days of clamp-on skates and skate keys.  I had a lot of skinned knees.
Oct 29 19:50:45 <The_Bee>   I remember those
Oct 29 19:50:48 <Evie>   At least two
Oct 29 19:50:50 <DesertRose>   Yeah, most of my skating was in boot-style quad skates at the skating rink.

Oct 29 19:51:44 <Jerusha>   Rehi.  Problem is with my internet. DH will be having a serious discussion with Bell
Oct 29 19:52:07 <DesertRose>   Well, bummer.
Oct 29 19:52:16 <DesertRose>   Internet connection issues are made of fail.
Oct 29 19:52:26 <Jerusha>   It is now faster, when it works
Oct 29 19:53:05 <Jerusha>   "When' is iffy
Oct 29 19:53:28 <DesertRose>   Yeah, that was the problem I was having with the connection I shared with my neighbor on the 14th floor.  The signal was WAY faster, but it was also WAY unreliable, which tended to irk me, because I don't really do anything (like online gaming of the MMO variety) that requires the higher speed.
Oct 29 19:53:45 <Evie>   I might have found something to use for Duncan's marble flooring, but I'll need to buy two identical ones, cut off the borders along one edge of each, and join them to get a room about the right size.
Oct 29 19:53:58 <DesertRose>   Mmrr?
Oct 29 19:54:12 <KK>   Vinyl, I hope?
Oct 29 19:54:16 <Jerusha>   Ohh, marble flooring
Oct 29 19:54:30 <Derynifank>   Where is the marble glooring?
Oct 29 19:54:40 <DesertRose>   In Mini-Duncan's 1:6 scale study. :)
Oct 29 19:54:40 <Jerusha>   In his study?
Oct 29 19:54:42 <Derynifank>   Flooring
Oct 29 19:55:09 <Evie>   No, it's more similar to Contact paper, but it's an adhesive foil made to stick on a kitchen wall for a backsplash. But works on foamcore board just as well:  https://www.flickr.com/gp/9573389@N08/Gm412u
Oct 29 19:55:19 <Jerusha>   Nothing but the best for our Bishop
Oct 29 19:55:22 <Evie>   In his study, if I ever get around to making one
Oct 29 19:55:22 <Derynifank>   Would he have had marble? I thought they mostly had stone
Oct 29 19:55:32 <Evie>   KK's description said marble
Oct 29 19:55:40 <DesertRose>   In a bishop's study one might have marble floors.  :)
Oct 29 19:55:44 <The_Bee>   Marble is stone.
Oct 29 19:55:54 <KK>   I like it.  Should work, if you can cut it to size.
Oct 29 19:56:19 <DesertRose>   That's pretty!
Oct 29 19:56:32 <Evie>   There's that side and a black and white side. And actually I'll need to double it, since that is only the equivalent of an 8' x 12' room, and by your dimensions I would think the study is more like 12' x 15'.
Oct 29 19:56:35 <Jerusha>   Who is the lady admiring it?
Oct 29 19:56:40 <DesertRose>   Marble is indeed stone, but it is EXPENSIVE stone in most parts of the world.  :)
Oct 29 19:57:23 <Evie>   I also have a black and white side:  https://www.flickr.com/gp/9573389@N08/9385T3
Oct 29 19:57:34 <Derynifank>   That really is pretty  and he certainly deserves it
Oct 29 19:57:53 <Evie>   She's new, Jerusha. I mainly bought her for her articulated body.
Oct 29 19:58:03 <KK>   Is that a placemat?
Oct 29 19:58:12 <Evie>   No, it's another sheet of that same adhesive foil
Oct 29 19:58:18 <Jerusha>   You have a persona in mind for her?
Oct 29 19:58:33 <Evie>   If you look on the adhesive side, it's shiny silver, but the printed side doesn't look metallic.
Oct 29 19:58:38 <Jerusha>   Both will work in my entryway.  Hint, hint.
Oct 29 19:58:42 <DesertRose>   LOL
Oct 29 19:58:50 <Evie>   Not really. I think she will probably end up as a body donor.
Oct 29 19:58:54 <JudyWard>   Ok, BRB again. Have to go feed the outside kitties.
Oct 29 19:59:06 <Jerusha>   Shades of Margaret Atwood!
Oct 29 19:59:13 <DesertRose>   Yeesh
Oct 29 19:59:25 *   Jerusha has quit (Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client)
Oct 29 19:59:37 <DesertRose>   Well, crud.  Did I annoy Jerusha?
Oct 29 19:59:37 <Evie>   LOL! You really don't want this in your entryway unless you mean from real stone. This is extremely cheap, flimsy stuff from Dollar Tree. I can't imagine using it as a backsplash unless it's meant to be temporary.
Oct 29 19:59:46 <KK>   "Just hold still, dear.  You're going to be a body donor.  It won't hurt a bit, I promise."
Oct 29 20:00:02 <Evie>   "It will hurt me more than it hurts you. OK, I lie."
Oct 29 20:00:31 <DesertRose>   I just meant to cringe at the thought of the Republic of Gilead.  I didn't mean to alienate Jerusha!
Oct 29 20:00:35 <Evie>   Honestly, aside from her articulated body, I also got her for her shoes, her water bottle, and her camera
Oct 29 20:00:54 *   The_Bee has quit (Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client)
Oct 29 20:00:58 <Dennis>   I'm betting Jerusha got booted by the server.
Oct 29 20:01:07 <DesertRose>   Probably.  Just crap timing.  :)
Oct 29 20:01:24 <Dennis>   And I'd like to up that bet since Bee just got booted too.
Oct 29 20:01:36 <Evie>   If I don't end up having a doll in my collection with the same skin color and in need of a better body, she might get to acquire a name and personality.
Oct 29 20:01:55 *   DesertRose /kicks/ applies percussive maintenance to the server.  Behave yourself, and decently, dratted thing!
Oct 29 20:02:13 <Evie>   But she was on sale at Tuesday Morning, and since articulated bodies aren't a dime a dozen, I went ahead and got her as a spare.
Oct 29 20:02:20 <DesertRose>   Makes sense.

Oct 29 20:02:53 <DesertRose>   I guess the percussive maintenance worked for Bee's ability to log back in; let's see if Jerusha reappears, assuming her internet connection isn't being a pain.
Oct 29 20:02:59 <KK>   Tuesday Morning is a useful store.
Oct 29 20:03:09 <Evie>   KK, do you like the black and white marble better for Duncan's floor or the red marble?
Oct 29 20:03:14 <The_Bee>   thanks.  My monitor blinked, but my crockpot is now working.
Oct 29 20:03:22 <Jemler>   Needful Things.
Oct 29 20:03:43 <DesertRose>   Yeah, Bee, probably best to call your maintenance people.  That doesn't sound too great, from a wiring/electrical-maintenance standpoint.
Oct 29 20:04:06 <Evie>   I can go back and see if Dollar Tree has more of the same pattern and if there is a good way to join them into one 12' x 15' (aka 4 x 5 Alaric paces) floor.
Oct 29 20:04:11 <DesertRose>   Or did you throw the breaker, Bee?
Oct 29 20:04:42 <The_Bee>   I threw the breaker much earlier. It didn't help.
Oct 29 20:04:55 <DesertRose>   Yeah, if the current "blipped" like that, not cool.
Oct 29 20:05:03 <KK>   I like the black & white better.
Oct 29 20:05:11 <DesertRose>   Actually, if you have a number you can call tonight, might be a good idea.
Oct 29 20:05:24 <Evie>   I can see if the store has more of that color then.
Oct 29 20:05:41 <The_Bee>   Same thing with my coffee-maker a week or two ago.
Oct 29 20:05:52 <DesertRose>   Yeah, call your maintenance people.  ASAP
Oct 29 20:05:59 <JudyWard>   Electricity is nothing to play with. Needs a pro.
Oct 29 20:06:02 <DesertRose>   Yup
Oct 29 20:06:11 <The_Bee>   I won't be able to get them before tomorrow.

Oct 29 20:06:19 <DesertRose>   Bad idea.
Oct 29 20:06:39 <Jerusha>   We'll try this one more time....
Oct 29 20:06:47 <Evie>   rehi Jerusha
Oct 29 20:06:52 <KK>   If you had both plugged into the same outlet and that's when it blew, then youprobably overloaded that outlet--though having a 2-gang outlet in a kitchen and not able to use both at once is a bummer, and probably a code violvation, soo.
Oct 29 20:07:11 <DesertRose>   There's a photo floating around the internet of a sign in front of something like a substation or transformer, and it has the standard "High Voltage: Do Not Enter" bit, but it also has another part that I'm absolutely certain an electrician wrote.
Oct 29 20:07:27 <DesertRose>   The second part of the sign reads, "Not only will this kill you, it will hurt the entire time you are dying."

Oct 29 20:09:49 <Derynifank>   Sounds like the wiring needs to be checked . You can'take be too careful with electricity
Oct 29 20:10:01 <Jerusha>   That's for sure
Oct 29 20:10:12 <DesertRose>   No, no such thing as too careful.  So saith the electrician's daughter and the baby sister of a former meter reader.
Oct 29 20:10:23 <The_Bee>   I've unplugged everything in that outlet.
Oct 29 20:10:26 <DesertRose>   Good idea.
Oct 29 20:10:33 <Jerusha>   Yes
Oct 29 20:10:36 <DesertRose>   But still, call maintenance first thing in the morning and tell them.
Oct 29 20:10:37 <Derynifank>   Good idea
Oct 29 20:11:15 <JudyWard>   Maybe that outlet shouldn't be on that breaker.
Oct 29 20:11:21 <DesertRose>   My oldest brother, for some odd reason, thought it would be cool to teach his then ten-year-old sister (aka me) how to read an electrical meter.
Oct 29 20:11:35 <The_Bee>   I flipped every break er have.
Oct 29 20:11:38 <JudyWard>   Knowledge is insurance.
Oct 29 20:11:53 <Evie>   Our friend Vicki went away from her former house for a weekend and came back to what looked like a scene from a horror movie. Her hallway lights and living room/kitchen lights were alternating blinking on and off--one set would switch off and the other set would simultaneously come on.
Oct 29 20:11:57 <DesertRose>   It actually came in handy years later when apparently the meter reader assigned to the house I was renting at the time had crappy handwriting and he had written a 0 that got interpreted as a 6.
Oct 29 20:12:07 <DesertRose>   Which resulted in my power bill being OFF THE CHARTS high!
Oct 29 20:12:12 <JudyWard>   That's scary!
Oct 29 20:12:21 <Jerusha>   Ouch
Oct 29 20:12:21 <DesertRose>   YIKES!
Oct 29 20:12:21 *   DomMelchior has quit (Quit: )
Oct 29 20:12:42 <Evie>   And several of her major appliances had either died or at least were not currently working. It turned out that a squirrel had bit through an external power line bringing current into her house.
Oct 29 20:13:01 <DesertRose>   But since my brother had decided a decade or so earlier to teach me to read an electrical meter, I was able to go look myself and request a reread, which resulted in a much more reasonable power bill.
Oct 29 20:13:03 <DesertRose>   Oh jeez.
Oct 29 20:13:11 <Jerusha>   Did the squirrel live?
Oct 29 20:13:12 <The_Bee>   I once had a $1000+ electric bill because the meter-reader couldn't get in.
Oct 29 20:13:29 <Evie>   She never saw a squirrel corpse, but presumably not
Oct 29 20:13:31 <DesertRose>   Yeah, I'm thinking that may have been somewhere between VERY painful and fatal for the squirrel.
Oct 29 20:14:00 <The_Bee>   traumatized the poor thing.
Oct 29 20:14:12 <Jerusha>   RIP squirrel
Oct 29 20:14:25 <Derynifank>   Glad my meter is outside. Wouldn'the want a bill like that
Oct 29 20:14:26 <JudyWard>   Squirrels can cause a lot of problems, especially in your attic.
Oct 29 20:14:35 <DesertRose>   Yes, they can.
Oct 29 20:14:40 <DesertRose>   They can be a right annoyance.
Oct 29 20:15:06 <Jerusha>   And they make whippets bark really, really LOUD
Oct 29 20:15:13 <Evie>   LOL!
Oct 29 20:15:23 <JudyWard>   Whippets love to chase squirrels.
Oct 29 20:15:29 <DesertRose>   My parents for some odd reason have feeders set up for both birds and squirrels, but because they live in a semi-rural part of town, the squirrel feeders have resulted in a family of hawks taking up residence in the trees on the property.  :)
Oct 29 20:15:30 <The_Bee>   A cousin of mine had a squirrel problem. He turned a cat loose in the attic.  Problem solved.
Oct 29 20:15:37 <JudyWard>   So do Ridgebacks.
Oct 29 20:15:40 <DesertRose>   So I doubt they have many issues with squirrels biting through power lines.
Oct 29 20:15:42 <Jerusha>   Mine aren't good at catching them, which is OK with me
Oct 29 20:15:48 <Jemler>   your whippet isn't named Devo is it?

Oct 29 20:16:53 <JudyWard>   Oh, CRUD. Now the dogs want out! BRB.
Oct 29 20:17:02 <Jemler>   anyone ever see 'Zorro, The Gay Blade'?
Oct 29 20:17:13 <DesertRose>   I mean, I have no particular room to talk about odd names for pets, since I'm the silly English major who once named a cat Cyrano because my parents had a cat named Roxanne.
Oct 29 20:17:24 <JudyWard>   YES! LOVED that movie!
Oct 29 20:17:27 <Evie>   Yeah, this doll is definitely not going to get a name or personality in this life. Her head feels like it might be stuffed completely full of that hard gooey glue Mattel used to use, that leaks out when it gets hot and causes a greasy mess in the hair.
Oct 29 20:17:36 <The_Bee>   no. but I loved the Zorro tv show when I was a kid.
Oct 29 20:17:53 <Jerusha>   Oh yuck, Evie
Oct 29 20:18:07 <Jerusha>   Yes, Bee, me too
Oct 29 20:18:15 <DesertRose>   Oh no, Evie!
Oct 29 20:18:41 <Jerusha>   Sounds like the start of a Halloween horror story, Evie
Oct 29 20:18:54 <Evie>   I don't want to have to deal with the hassle of trying to fix it if it gets that glue problem. I'm on the verge of thinking I might need to reroot Jen.  :-(

Oct 29 20:18:57 <Jemler>   george Hamilton stars as both Diego and ramon de la Vega. Ramon is gayu, and although not much of a swordsman, is not "that bad with a whip".

Oct 29 20:19:12 <Evie>   LOL, Jerusha
Oct 29 20:19:35 <JudyWard>   Yes, Bee. I loved Zorro, too, as a kid!
Oct 29 20:19:35 <Evie>   LOL, why the frying pan? Or is it the leftovers he wants?
Oct 29 20:19:46 <The_Bee>   large pumpkin or small cat?
Oct 29 20:20:10 <JudyWard>   He wants to clean up the pan. Then it gets a good soaking with dish soap & goes in the dishwasher,.
Oct 29 20:20:20 <DesertRose>   Other way around, Bee.  Large (ish) cat, small (ish) pumpkin.

"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
