Jun 25 19:14:51 *   KK has joined
Jun 25 19:14:54 <Evie>   Hi KK
Jun 25 19:14:54 <DesertRose>   hi KK
Jun 25 19:14:57 <The_Bee>   Hi KK
Jun 25 19:14:59 <Derynifank>   Wonder who that was
Jun 25 19:15:01 <Shiral>   Hi Katherine
Jun 25 19:15:04 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Hello KK
Jun 25 19:15:07 <Derynifank>   Hi KK
Jun 25 19:15:07 <DesertRose>   Might have been KK under the wrong name.  :)
Jun 25 19:15:12 <Shiral>   "Wonder Woman" maybe?
Jun 25 19:15:25 <Jemler>   the reason i asked is apparently my family comes from a town called Emmeln in northweswtern germany, north of munster.
Jun 25 19:15:26 <KK>   Hello, all.  Sorry I'm late.  Got hooked onwatching Places in the Heart.  Really good movie.
Jun 25 19:15:27 <Jemler>   hi kk
Jun 25 19:15:35 <bynw>   hi KK
Jun 25 19:15:44 <DesertRose>   No worries, KK.  We're glad to see you, late or on time.  ;D
Jun 25 19:16:22 <KK>   How're you feeling, DR?
Jun 25 19:16:25 <DesertRose>   Meh.
Jun 25 19:16:25 <Jemler>   KK is never late. Nor is she early. She arrives precisely whens she means to. :)
Jun 25 19:16:34 <BalanceTheEnergies>   :D
Jun 25 19:16:36 <bynw>   lol
Jun 25 19:16:40 <DesertRose>   The headache that has been going on since the end of May tried to get worse earlier today.
Jun 25 19:16:52 <The_Bee>   bummer
Jun 25 19:17:01 <Derynifank>   Sorry to hear that
Jun 25 19:17:03 <Evie>   Have been watching a British Netflix series called Black Mirror.  Very interesting, though a bit dark, SF series sort of like Twilight Zone, but with a modern technology theme
Jun 25 19:17:07 <DesertRose>   Fortunately, I have an appointment tomorrow afternoon with my pain management doctor for an occipital nerve block that should hopefully put the stupid headache away for good.
Jun 25 19:17:13 <Derynifank>   , thought it was better
Jun 25 19:17:21 <Shiral>   Evie, did you ever put your camera away? =o)
Jun 25 19:17:30 <DesertRose>   It was, and then this afternoon it decided it wanted to get ugly.
Jun 25 19:17:33 <Shiral>   On your cruise, I mean
Jun 25 19:17:41 <Derynifank>   Hope the nerve block does the job
Jun 25 19:17:47 <DesertRose>   Me too!
Jun 25 19:17:53 <Evie>   Since my camera is also my phone, no. But it is resting a lot more now that I'm home.
Jun 25 19:18:02 <Shiral>   Me three. What a Seige. DR
Jun 25 19:18:07 <DesertRose>   Yeah.
Jun 25 19:18:24 <Evie>   Only when I ran out of charge, Shiral. :-D
Jun 25 19:18:29 <Shiral>   "Man, I'm exhausted, and My memory was so full of half-timbered buildings!!"
Jun 25 19:18:33 <DesertRose>   The headache started with that stupid bit with the smoke alarm going off for two hours, back on the last Sunday in May, and it's been present to one degree or another ever since.
Jun 25 19:18:57 <KK>   What do the doctors say is causing it?
Jun 25 19:18:57 <Derynifank>   😢
Jun 25 19:19:02 <Annie>   Black Mirror is good, yeah, pretty dark.
Jun 25 19:19:03 <Evie>   I hope the block can fix that for good
Jun 25 19:19:16 <Shiral>   If we ever went to Europe on the same trip, we'd be constantly snapping away at pictures. =o)
Jun 25 19:19:16 <DesertRose>   But the last time I had a headache that wouldn't go away, the occipital nerve block made it go away in like five minutes.  It was like night and day.
Jun 25 19:19:20 <The_Bee>   We all hope so.
Jun 25 19:19:30 <KK>   Good luck, then.
Jun 25 19:19:30 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Quite so.
Jun 25 19:19:30 <Evie>   I've just finished Seasons 1 and 2, Annie
Jun 25 19:19:45 <DesertRose>   Not sure.  I have chronic migraines, and we're in the middle of fiddling with my preventative medication and we may need to change my treatment medication as well.
Jun 25 19:20:10 <Shiral>   Speaking of Comcast being frustrated, it was down all Sunday evening, last week. You don't want to come between Melissa and her Sunday night TV!
Jun 25 19:20:24 <DesertRose>   My old preventative medication wasn't working anymore, so my neurologist had me raise the dose (because I had been on quite a low dose but it worked for almost two years so there wasn't a reason to change it until recently).
Jun 25 19:20:27 <The_Bee>   So the new nerve block is supposed to be a permanent fix?
Jun 25 19:20:34 <Shiral>   But it was a very hot day, and there were power outages in spots all over the place.
Jun 25 19:20:50 <DesertRose>   And the raised dose caused me to start itching all over, so I had to discontinue that medication and change to something else.
Jun 25 19:21:28 <DesertRose>   Which I just today got titrated up to the full three doses per day, but my neurologist said not to jump in to taking it three times per day, to do once per day for a few days, then twice per day for a few days, and then go up to three.
Jun 25 19:21:41 <Derynifank>   Oh dear. If it's not one thing it's three
Jun 25 19:21:54 <DesertRose>   Well, the last nerve block worked beautifully and probably would have lasted longer if not for the blasted smoke alarm thing.
Jun 25 19:22:29 <DesertRose>   My neurologist was concerned about the nerve block not lasting as long as it should have, but I think the smoke alarm mess is at fault there, not the treatment.
Jun 25 19:22:34 <Derynifank>   Can we put a silence spell on that smoke  alarm
Jun 25 19:22:43 <DesertRose>   Well, the new one's behaved itself beautifully.
Jun 25 19:23:20 <The_Bee>   I hate it when my stove sets off my smoke alarm
Jun 25 19:23:25 <DesertRose>   The emergency maintenance people had to remove my old alarm and put a replacement one in, because the old one would NOT shut the [bleep] up for any inducement.
Jun 25 19:24:03 <DesertRose>   But also, the treatment medication isn't working as well as it should, in my opinon.
Jun 25 19:24:07 <DesertRose>   *opinion
Jun 25 19:24:49 <DesertRose>   I can't take the oral tablets right now because of my digestive problems, and the nasal spray that they gave me as an alternative just doesn't seem to be working very well, so I kind of want the neurologist to consider some other medication, even a different one in the same class.
Jun 25 19:25:24 <Derynifank>   Seems like a good idea
Jun 25 19:25:48 <DesertRose>   What I'm currently using is sumatriptan, which goes by the brand name Imitrex in the US (not sure about international brand names).
Jun 25 19:25:57 <Jemler>   that only leaves one option: injection.
Jun 25 19:26:15 <DesertRose>   And it used to work just fine, but it doesn't seem to be working so well anymore.  The nasal spray ones give me a few hours of pain relief at best.
Jun 25 19:26:21 <DesertRose>   Yes, thus the nerve block, Jemler.
Jun 25 19:26:31 <Derynifank>   Might have a medicine patch
Jun 25 19:26:41 <DesertRose>   But there are other medications in the same class as sumatriptan that we could try.
Jun 25 19:27:26 <The_Bee>   Hopefully you'll findsomething that works.
Jun 25 19:27:29 <DesertRose>   The nerve block involves two injections into the back of my skull.
Jun 25 19:27:44 <Derynifank>   Hope something  works soon
Jun 25 19:27:51 <DesertRose>   The funny part about the first set I got was that the pain management doctor had to spend more time FINDING my scalp than it took to administer the injection.
Jun 25 19:28:00 <The_Bee>   one in each braid hemisphere?
Jun 25 19:28:05 <The_Bee>   brain
Jun 25 19:28:08 <DesertRose>   (Because I have hair that is well on the thick end of average.)
Jun 25 19:28:12 <DesertRose>   Yes, Bee.
Jun 25 19:28:18 <Evie>   Luke is attempting to nap on my arm, having made the other one nearly go to sleep. He must have tired himself out playing with DD's fidget spinner earlier.
Jun 25 19:28:25 <DesertRose>   Hi Luke.
Jun 25 19:28:35 <Evie>   LOL! I like Braid Hemisphere, given DR's thick hair. :-D
Jun 25 19:28:38 <DesertRose>   Her Highness is napping on the back of the armchair.
Jun 25 19:28:55 <DesertRose>   And I do sometimes wear my hair in pigtail braids, so it actually does make sense.  :)
Jun 25 19:29:29 <DesertRose>   Which hairstyle REALLY seems to provoke people into asking about my native blood.
Jun 25 19:29:41 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Wimsey's had a snack and is napping on my lap and right arm. Kindly forgive typos
Jun 25 19:29:47 <DesertRose>   Hi Wimsey.
Jun 25 19:29:54 <Shiral>   Hi Wimsey
Jun 25 19:30:11 *   Evie waves at kitties as much as possible given current incapussitation
Jun 25 19:30:12 <The_Bee>   hi wimsey and luke
Jun 25 19:30:25 *   DesertRose scritches Luke and Wimsey from afar.
Jun 25 19:30:27 <Shiral>   I'm on at work--no cats today
Jun 25 19:30:41 <DesertRose>   Aw, the pygmy lions are on their own, huh?
Jun 25 19:30:44 <Shiral>   My laptop is in the hospital, anyway.
Jun 25 19:30:52 <DesertRose>   Uh oh.  What's wrong with your laptop?
Jun 25 19:30:54 <Shiral>   They'll live!
Jun 25 19:30:59 <DesertRose>   Oh, I'm sure.
Jun 25 19:31:02 <Shiral>   Cooling fan not working
Jun 25 19:31:09 <The_Bee>   Melantha is around here somewhere.
Jun 25 19:31:13 <DesertRose>   Even Carys, the original Velcro kitty, can survive me being gone for a few hours.
Jun 25 19:31:24 <DesertRose>   Hi to Melantha, wherever her furry butt is.  :)
Jun 25 19:31:35 <DesertRose>   Not fun, re: cooling fan, Shiral
Jun 25 19:31:43 <Derynifank>   Toby is outside watching  lightning bugs
Jun 25 19:31:51 <Shiral>   It's six years old, but they've fixed this same problem before. I think the problem is that Dmitri looks upon my laptop more like his personal warming pad
Jun 25 19:32:01 <DesertRose>   LOL, yeah.
Jun 25 19:32:10 <DesertRose>   If not for sits, why is it made of warm?
Jun 25 19:32:16 <Shiral>   But if they can't fixt it, it is, as I say six years old
Jun 25 19:32:25 <DesertRose>   Yeah, might be time for a new one anyway.
Jun 25 19:32:45 <Shiral>   It still works pretty well when the fan DOES work
Jun 25 19:32:46 <The_Bee>   BTW, Melantha's recent checkup showed no sign of returning cancer after 2 years.
Jun 25 19:32:53 <DesertRose>   Hi to Toby.  That sounds like good fun.
Jun 25 19:32:59 <DesertRose>   YAY re: Melantha and being in remission.
Jun 25 19:33:00 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Yay!
Jun 25 19:33:07 <Evie>   Yay for non-returning cancer!
Jun 25 19:33:24 <Derynifank>   Yay for Melania
Jun 25 19:33:34 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Wimsey's getting a growth removed on Tuesday.
Jun 25 19:33:39 <Shiral>   Cancer kept away is the best.
Jun 25 19:33:40 <DesertRose>   BRB, tea glass has gone empty on me.
Jun 25 19:33:44 <KK>   Yay for mELANTHA!
Jun 25 19:33:52 <Derynifank>   Melantha. Darn auto correct
Jun 25 19:34:07 <Shiral>   Darn, now I wish I had some iced tea.
Jun 25 19:34:14 <Shiral>   Real, not virtual.
Jun 25 19:34:29 <Evie>   I would offer you half a bottle of cider, but yeah, virtual.
Jun 25 19:35:01 <The_Bee>   The vet says she's very strong.Shw loat a lot of blood when they nicked an artery during surgery.  the surgeon wasn't sure she's make it.
Jun 25 19:35:10 <Evie>   Our friend who we visit a lot in TN just accepted a job offer here, so she will be starting at the end of next month.
Jun 25 19:35:27 <Shiral>   Appreciate the thought, though. =o) I have iced tea in the fridge at home. Today not NEARLY as hot as last week. Which is good, since the library HVAC system was struggling in the hot weather.
Jun 25 19:35:42 <Derynifank>   Cool. Nice to have her close
Jun 25 19:36:00 <The_Bee>   My cat is not relation to our current FLOTUS.
Jun 25 19:36:18 <Shiral>   No, I think they'd both agree on that, Bee. =o)
Jun 25 19:36:26 <Shiral>   Being from different species and all
Jun 25 19:36:27 <BalanceTheEnergies>   :)
Jun 25 19:36:43 <DesertRose>   I may have been born in the southwest, but I mostly grew up in the South.  I will go to my deathbed with a glass of (lightly) sweet tea beside me.
Jun 25 19:36:56 <Shiral>   Darn....Now I want to go to the Black Forest!
Jun 25 19:37:10 <Evie>   It's beautiful, Shiral
Jun 25 19:37:14 <DesertRose>   I'm not one of those Southerners who drinks vaguely tea flavored syrup.  :)
Jun 25 19:37:53 <DesertRose>   I drink strong black tea, lightly sweetened and with a bit of lemon juice.
Jun 25 19:38:01 <KK>   No, not fond of sweet tea myself.  Not that fond of iced tea, for that matter.
Jun 25 19:38:01 <Evie>   I'll drink your tea syrup. ;-)
Jun 25 19:38:18 <DesertRose>   HERESY!  You're a Florida native, KK!  :P
Jun 25 19:38:26 <BalanceTheEnergies>   I tried sweet tea when I lived in Louisiana and cannot stand any sugar in my tea now.
Jun 25 19:38:30 *   The_Bee serves a huge Black forest cake for Shiral.
Jun 25 19:38:44 <DesertRose>   (I'm teasing, BTW, in case that isn't obvious)
Jun 25 19:38:48 <Shiral>   I just make iced tea and add a little low calorie sweetener
Jun 25 19:38:52 <Shiral>   Thanks, Bee
Jun 25 19:38:59 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Iced Earl Grey works though.
Jun 25 19:38:59 <DesertRose>   I use regular sugar in mine, just not a lot.
Jun 25 19:39:06 *   Shiral shares virtual Black Forest Cake with Chatters
Jun 25 19:39:20 <KK>   Nope, never acquired a taste for iced tea.  Lemonade, now....  Or for tea, Earl Grey with milk and 2 sugars.
Jun 25 19:39:24 <Shiral>   I live on that all Summer, but love iced cofee, too
Jun 25 19:39:26 <DesertRose>   Artificial sweeteners mess with my digestive tract under the best of circumstances; I shudder to think of what would happen right now if I tried.
Jun 25 19:39:27 <The_Bee>   I buy ready-mixed ice tea.
Jun 25 19:39:36 <Evie>   Yeah, nowadays I usually just add a pack of Splenda or stevia, but I grew up on very sweet iced tea
Jun 25 19:39:52 <Derynifank>   I don'the qualify as southern because I drink my tea without sweet
Jun 25 19:40:04 <KK>   I don't use artificial sweeteners at all.  No extra chemicals in <my> body!
Jun 25 19:40:12 <Shiral>   I use Sucralose. Has an okay taste and not a bad aftertaste. Stevia tastes okay, but I really hate the aftertaste
Jun 25 19:40:19 <DesertRose>   I can handle stevia, if it's pure stevia, not with any sugar alcohols added, but unfortunately the pure stevia is out of my budget.
Jun 25 19:40:28 <The_Bee>   I like raspberry sweet tea.
Jun 25 19:40:48 <DesertRose>   The sugar alcohols mess up my stomach, although the stevia itself seems to be okay.
Jun 25 19:40:50 <Derynifank>   Don'the take any chances
Jun 25 19:41:19 <DesertRose>   But I bought a container of the pure stevia from Fresh Market once on sale, and even on sale it's too expensive for me on a regular basis.
Jun 25 19:41:31 <Shiral>   I went out to dinner on Friday with a friend, and since he doesn't drive, he asked if I'd mind stopping at a liquor store as he wanted to buy some Amaretto. He was very apologetic and sure it wasn't my thing. But guess who bought more?  (I will say, most of them were those itty bitty sample bottles...)
Jun 25 19:41:32 <DesertRose>   I just wanted to see if the pure stuff would be okay on my digestion.
Jun 25 19:41:32 <BalanceTheEnergies>   I get headaches from artificial sweeteners. Not sure why.
Jun 25 19:41:50 <The_Bee>   My standard breakfast is slimfast mixed with cold coffee.
Jun 25 19:42:07 <DesertRose>   LOL, Shiral
Jun 25 19:42:19 <KK>   I like Amaretto.  Discovered it on one of our lecture cruises, some years back.
Jun 25 19:42:33 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Mmmm DiSarronno
Jun 25 19:42:34 <Shiral>   I guess my digestion rivals that of a goat.  I like the flavor or I don't, but the artificial sweeteners don't upset my stomach
Jun 25 19:42:34 <DesertRose>   Amaretto is nice if mixed with something to reduce the sweetness.
Jun 25 19:42:39 <Evie>   I like Amaretto also
Jun 25 19:42:52 <DesertRose>   It's awfully sweet on its own.
Jun 25 19:42:55 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Yep. Amaretto Sours
Jun 25 19:42:59 <DesertRose>   Oh yeah, BalanceTheEnergies
Jun 25 19:43:04 <DesertRose>   Now we're talking!
Jun 25 19:43:05 <The_Bee>   Amaretto with coffee
Jun 25 19:43:10 <DesertRose>   That works too, Bee!
Jun 25 19:43:12 <KK>   Amaretto with half & half, over ice.
Jun 25 19:43:27 <KK>   And it's to be sipped, not gulped/
Jun 25 19:43:37 <Shiral>   And I got a little Limoncello, an little bottle of elderflower liqueur, and this stuff that's like limoncello but made with oranges.... some vanilla cinnamon Baileys, and some peach liqueur....
Jun 25 19:43:41 <DesertRose>   Never tried that.  It sounds like it might taste like an alcoholic almond milkshake, or something along those lines.
Jun 25 19:43:42 <The_Bee>   half and half soda, or milk and cream?
Jun 25 19:43:57 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Years ago Haagen-Dazs made DiSarronno ice cream. Yummy
Jun 25 19:44:01 <DesertRose>   Ooh!
Jun 25 19:44:22 <KK>   Half & half--sort of a light cream.
Jun 25 19:44:27 <Shiral>   I got the Elderflower stuff because the bottle was so pretty. =o)
Jun 25 19:44:32 <DesertRose>   :)
Jun 25 19:44:42 <The_Bee>   how does it taste?
Jun 25 19:44:51 <Shiral>   Haven't had any yet
Jun 25 19:45:02 <DesertRose>   What the heck is the name of that raspberry liqueur that gets called the Holy Hand Grenade in SCA circles because of the bottle design?
Jun 25 19:45:08 <Shiral>   Chambord
Jun 25 19:45:13 <DesertRose>   Thank you!
Jun 25 19:45:22 <Shiral>   Also good over vanilla ice cream
Jun 25 19:45:36 <DesertRose>   The bottle looks like the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch from Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Jun 25 19:45:44 <DesertRose>   Ooh, I bet it is, re: vanilla ice cream!
Jun 25 19:45:49 <Derynifank>   Anything is good over vanilla ice cream
Jun 25 19:45:54 <DesertRose>   Just about, Derynifank
Jun 25 19:46:03 <Shiral>   It looks like an orb that Kelson and his peers might carry
Jun 25 19:46:14 <DesertRose>   My maternal grandmother used to pour Coca-Cola over vanilla ice cream and eat the resulting foam.
Jun 25 19:46:20 <DesertRose>   She's the only person I've ever seen do that.
Jun 25 19:46:31 <Evie>   Basically it's a Coke float
Jun 25 19:46:35 <DesertRose>   Basically.
Jun 25 19:46:38 <DesertRose>   Just slower.
Jun 25 19:46:39 <The_Bee>   That's also called a black cow
Jun 25 19:46:41 <Jemler>   root beer float
Jun 25 19:46:50 <Shiral>   KK, there is reference to Alroy having a scepter, but no reference in the later books. Did somebody lose it in the moat
Jun 25 19:47:15 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Haven't had a float since I was a kid
Jun 25 19:47:21 <The_Bee>   root beer float: brown cow.  grape float: purple cow.
Jun 25 19:47:30 <DesertRose>   She did it one time when she was in the hospital with the chemotherapy stuff, because the hospital staff couldn't get her to eat anything and were going to try to make her drink one of those Ensure drinks, and she was like, "No.  I can't take that stuff when I feel WELL."
Jun 25 19:47:34 <Shiral>   I've had rootbeer floats. Have to admit I love them
Jun 25 19:47:40 <DesertRose>   So she asked for a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a can of Coke.
Jun 25 19:47:41 <Evie>   I doubt a scepter would be in regular use, just on ceremonial occasions
Jun 25 19:47:55 <DesertRose>   Just to eat SOMETHING to get the nursing staff off her case about it.
Jun 25 19:48:12 <Shiral>   I've never figured out what they were for OTHER than as decoration anyway. Just curious about its fate
Jun 25 19:48:24 <KK>   Yeah, scepter would be special use.
Jun 25 19:48:26 <The_Bee>   I thought ensure was for gaining weight.
Jun 25 19:48:32 <DesertRose>   It's a symbol of something having to do with a monarch's role.
Jun 25 19:48:47 <Derynifank>   Scepter sign of power I think
Jun 25 19:48:54 <DesertRose>   It is, but they were wanting her to eat or drink SOMETHING because she wouldn't because of the nausea caused by the chemo.
Jun 25 19:49:01 <Shiral>   I think I od'd on grape juice as a child. Can't abide the thought of pouring it over ice cream
Jun 25 19:49:07 *   Jemler stays out of this conversation.
Jun 25 19:49:07 <Evie>   Yes, I think it's a power symbol
Jun 25 19:49:22 <DesertRose>   It has some symbolic meaning beyond just power, though, I think.
Jun 25 19:49:29 <Shiral>   Smart man, Jemler =o)
Jun 25 19:49:30 <KK>   It's Biblical, though.  The king stretched forth his scepter for Esther to approach.  And the crook and flail were symbols of authority in ancient Egypt.
Jun 25 19:49:34 <DesertRose>   Something is tripping in the back of my brain about that now, but it won't come to the forefront.
Jun 25 19:49:34 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Isn't a scepter a kind of rod of office, like a fancy officers swagger stick or the Roman lictor red?
Jun 25 19:49:40 <Derynifank>   Kelson did carry one  once but mostly  carried the Haldane sword  I think
Jun 25 19:49:52 <Shiral>   "He's less dangerous when he's got his hands full....
Jun 25 19:49:56 <DesertRose>   LOL
Jun 25 19:50:15 <Jemler>   unless they're full of sharp metal!
Jun 25 19:50:22 <Shiral>   Well, talk about DANGEROUS! If you're behind the King when he's carrying that, hope he doesn't stop suddenly!
Jun 25 19:51:25 <Evie>   I guess I ought to make Kelson some mini regalia
Jun 25 19:51:38 <Derynifank>   Particularly since it was the bare  bkade, no sheath
Jun 25 19:51:50 <Derynifank>   Blade
Jun 25 19:51:57 <KK>   Yeah, Haldane kings did tend to carry a sword in the crook of the arm.
Jun 25 19:51:59 <DesertRose>   A Mini-Deryni collector's work is never done.  :)
Jun 25 19:52:22 <KK>   Sometimes sheathed and sometimes bare blade.
Jun 25 19:52:46 <Derynifank>   True
Jun 25 19:52:50 <Evie>   You don't want to get clumsy with an unsheathed blade held in the crook of one's arm!
Jun 25 19:52:53 <Jemler>   speaking of dolls, did anyone see that darci girl on AGT?
Jun 25 19:52:55 <DesertRose>   No lie!
Jun 25 19:52:56 <KK>   I suppose that might depend on whether it was being used more in the weapon mode or simply a symbol of authority.
Jun 25 19:53:06 <Shiral>   Hope Araxie walks on Kelson's RIGHT.
Jun 25 19:53:19 <The_Bee>   any symbolic significance to sheathed vs unsheathed?
Jun 25 19:53:24 <KK>   We never really got into scepters in the SCA either.  Probably too much stuff to handle.  No orbs, either.
Jun 25 19:53:36 <Shiral>   And Hope Alaric and Duncan are nearby in case of a serious "oops" moment
Jun 25 19:53:42 <DesertRose>   Carys just hopped into my lap, so I'm incapussitated.
Jun 25 19:53:53 <Derynifank>   Don'the think she is on the same side as the sword
Jun 25 19:53:54 <The_Bee>   hi Carys
Jun 25 19:54:11 <Shiral>   I just hope the pointy end isn't closest to her!
Jun 25 19:54:13 <DesertRose>   She says, "Purrrrrrrrrr."
Jun 25 19:54:28 <Shiral>   Hello Caryss!
Jun 25 19:54:42 <The_Bee>   a sword usually worn o nthe side opposite the sword arm, isn't it?
Jun 25 19:54:55 <Shiral>   Tati was snuggled up in bed next to me last night. Until I had the audacity to actually want to lie down.
Jun 25 19:55:01 <Jemler>   i think so.
Jun 25 19:55:04 <Evie>   Usually
Jun 25 19:55:07 <DesertRose>   She's looking at the laptop and purring as I pet her.
Jun 25 19:55:11 <Shiral>   Yes, because you need room to draw
Jun 25 19:55:11 <BalanceTheEnergies>   So one can draw it yes.
Jun 25 19:55:14 <The_Bee>   easier to drw that way
Jun 25 19:55:17 <Evie>   Luke is conked out
Jun 25 19:55:34 <Jemler>   too much
Jun 25 19:55:40 <Shiral>   Carys is probably wondering why you find it so fascinating, DR
Jun 25 19:55:42 <Evie>   He discovered fidget spinners today. I think he tired himself out.
Jun 25 19:55:44 <Jemler>   too much Jawa Juice.
Jun 25 19:55:48 <DesertRose>   Probably
Jun 25 19:55:58 <KK>   Yes, Bee.  For a right-hander, it would be worn sheathed on the left, and the lady also on that side, so the swordsman could defend her.
Jun 25 19:56:00 <Derynifank>   Think it's worn on the left if  you'received right handed so it's easy to  reach and draw .
Jun 25 19:56:07 <Shiral>   I just got a fidget spinner. Cats haven't discovered it yet
Jun 25 19:56:33 <The_Bee>   Some organization has declared fidget spinner a dangerous toy.
Jun 25 19:56:48 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Dangerous?
Jun 25 19:56:56 <Evie>   DD was spinning hers, and when it slowed down, Luke had to sniff it (and get his nose thumped), then when he saw what it looked like stopped and then started again, he had to try his hand...um, paw at it too.
Jun 25 19:57:23 <Evie>   So she took video of him spinning it
Jun 25 19:57:25 <The_Bee>   some group that rates toys on safety.
Jun 25 19:58:01 <The_Bee>   choking hazard, I think they said
Jun 25 19:58:23 <Derynifank>   Dangerous because small pieces can break off and small child can get it stuck in their  throat
Jun 25 19:58:26 *   bynw has to get ready for dinner (anniversary is tomorrow but celebrating tonight)
Jun 25 19:58:44 <Jemler>   congrats bynw
Jun 25 19:58:49 <Derynifank>   Happy anniversary by now
Jun 25 19:58:51 <The_Bee>   would you give a fidget spinner to a small child?
Jun 25 19:58:54 <DesertRose>   Okay, bynw.  Happy anniversary!
Jun 25 19:59:07 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Yes. Happy Anniversary
Jun 25 19:59:12 <Derynifank>   Apparently some parents did
Jun 25 19:59:15 <DesertRose>   No, but an older child might have one and a younger sibling could be harmed, I'd guess.
Jun 25 19:59:16 <The_Bee>   Happy Anniversary, Bynw
Jun 25 19:59:17 <Evie>   Happy Anniversary!
Jun 25 19:59:19 <Shiral>   Happy Anniversary, Bynw
Jun 25 19:59:30 <DesertRose>   But they aren't really intended for young children, no.
Jun 25 19:59:48 <DesertRose>   Not children so young they don't know not to put toy parts in their mouths, anyway.
Jun 25 20:00:07 <The_Bee>   Are people over-protectove nowadays?
Jun 25 20:00:12 <DesertRose>   Sometimes, I think.
Jun 25 20:00:19 <Derynifank>   Or as my grandson used to say  Happy Anni grocery
Jun 25 20:00:24 <KK>   Having something automated that's supposed to work off nervous energy strikes me as an oxymoron.
Jun 25 20:00:25 <Evie>   I'm fairly sure that DD won't choke on hers
Jun 25 20:00:44 <DesertRose>   The world was always dangerous, but people are more aware of certain dangers now and try to protect their kids from them in ways people didn't used to do.
Jun 25 20:00:50 <KK>   Seems like all that energy could be put to more practical use.
Jun 25 20:00:54 <Evie>   It's not automated, it's just got ball bearings inside to make it spin rapidly
Jun 25 20:01:24 <KK>   It still spins faster than it would just with manual power.  Silly idea.
Jun 25 20:01:24 <Derynifank>   The ball bearings seem to be the problem
Jun 25 20:01:30 <Evie>   It's no more automated than a yoyo or those clackers that were popular when I was in school
Jun 25 20:01:31 <Shiral>   I was always taught that certain  things were "no touch." Like my brother's hot wheels cars
Jun 25 20:01:46 <BalanceTheEnergies>   I've heard some kids use the stimulus to concentrate.
Jun 25 20:01:50 <Shiral>   Which was unfortunate, since they fascinated me =o)
Jun 25 20:02:23 <Derynifank>   The forbidden is always more interesting
Jun 25 20:03:18 <KK>   Harumph.  Back in my day, when we walked 5 miles through the snow to get to school, and had to wrestle bobcats and grizzly bears on the way....
Jun 25 20:03:38 <Evie>   LOL!
Jun 25 20:03:43 <Shiral>   It was snowing in Coral Gables Florida? =o)
Jun 25 20:03:57 <Derynifank>   Was it also uphill both ways ?
Jun 25 20:04:03 <Jemler>   Snow? I thought you were born in Florida.
Jun 25 20:04:06 <BalanceTheEnergies>   :D
Jun 25 20:04:24 <Shiral>   Those must have been rare Florida Grizzlies. =o)
Jun 25 20:04:36 <KK>   Absolutely, to all!
Jun 25 20:04:46 <Jemler>   :)
Jun 25 20:04:52 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Gators/
Jun 25 20:04:52 <Evie>   My "fidget spinner" is usually a pen or my smart phone, but as someone who has dealt with ADHD all her life, I can see the value of having something to occupy one's hands at times when otherwise one needs to stay still and quiet.  :-)
Jun 25 20:04:58 <Shiral>   Wow....must have been quite a place.
Jun 25 20:05:04 <The_Bee>   We had to fight dragons on our way to school.
Jun 25 20:05:21 <KK>   Those, too, Bee.
Jun 25 20:05:23 <Evie>   I was stuck in a 4 hour long meeting last Friday. By the end of the meeting, I was about ready to climb up the walls.
Jun 25 20:05:33 <Derynifank>   Worry beads are good for occupying hands
Jun 25 20:05:36 <Evie>   Yes
Jun 25 20:05:43 <DesertRose>   Yeah.  I've thought of getting a spinner ring, because one of my nervous habits used to be rotating my rings on my fingers.
Jun 25 20:05:57 <DesertRose>   But I so seldom wear any jewelry at all anymore that I haven't bothered to get the spinner ring.
Jun 25 20:06:01 <KK>   Yes, I'd say that the fidget spinners are sort of automated worry beads.
Jun 25 20:06:09 <BalanceTheEnergies>   I've looked t those myself.
Jun 25 20:06:32 <DesertRose>   I still actually make the gesture like I'm going to rotate my rings; it's just that I don't have any rings on.
Jun 25 20:06:35 <KK>   I'ven spinner rings, where one ring rotates within two surrpunding ones.
Jun 25 20:06:38 <DesertRose>   Yes.
Jun 25 20:06:42 <Jemler>   i just do crosswords.
Jun 25 20:06:48 <BalanceTheEnergies>   i wouldn't drop a ring
Jun 25 20:07:01 <Evie>   Ironically, we had a few prize drawings to lighten the atmosphere and keep people from completely checking out mentally from boredom during that meeting, and two of the prizes were fidget spinners. LOL!
Jun 25 20:07:16 <BalanceTheEnergies>   :D
Jun 25 20:07:28 <Derynifank>   😁
Jun 25 20:07:32 <Shiral>   All I need are a pencil and a scrap of paper so I can doodle. It's gotten me through some incredibly boring meetings/
Jun 25 20:07:45 <KK>   What in the world was the meeting about, Evie?
Jun 25 20:07:52 <DesertRose>   There's a site called Stimtastic (address is stimtastic.co, and no that isn't meant to be dot com) that sells fidget jewelry and the like.  It's run by autistic people and the jewelry is very reasonably priced, so that was where I was going to buy a spinner ring if I did buy one.
Jun 25 20:08:16 <DesertRose>   Even though I'm not autistic myself, I like the idea of supporting a business run by autistic people to serve the needs of autistic people.
Jun 25 20:08:19 <Evie>   That's normally my go-to distraction too, but I was sitting right next to my boss, who might not have wanted to watch me doodle all through our meeting.  :-D
Jun 25 20:09:04 <The_Bee>   pretend you're taking notes.
Jun 25 20:09:11 <Evie>   We were planning our department's vision and mission statements and organizational goals for the next year, which we have to submit by the end of the month, I think
Jun 25 20:09:29 <Derynifank>   Or creating art for a new brochure
Jun 25 20:10:06 <Jemler>   dr, did you check the prices?
Jun 25 20:10:18 <DesertRose>   Problem is, my doodling wouldn't look anything like "art."  :P
Jun 25 20:10:23 <Shiral>   Well, I don't do it where authoritative types can see.
Jun 25 20:10:27 <DesertRose>   What do you mean, Jemler?
Jun 25 20:10:45 <Jemler>   Infinity Spinner Ring $9.50
Jun 25 20:10:50 <DesertRose>   Yes.
Jun 25 20:11:08 <Jemler>   infinity symbol on it.
Jun 25 20:11:10 <The_Bee>   I may be somewhere on the autistic spectrum.
Jun 25 20:11:12 <DesertRose>   Their prices are pretty reasonable.
Jun 25 20:11:49 <DesertRose>   I like the "Starry Night" design for the spinner ring; it's also $9.50 but it has planets and stars on it.

Jun 25 20:12:06 <Derynifank>   That sounds cool
Jun 25 20:12:08 <DesertRose>   That's probably the one I'd get if I got one.

Jun 25 20:12:42 <Evie>   Can I get the gold spinner ring engraved to look like The One Ring?  LOL!
Jun 25 20:12:49 <Derynifank>   Hi Jerusha. How are the triplets these days
Jun 25 20:12:51 <Jerusha>   Hi Everyone
Jun 25 20:12:55 <DesertRose>   LOL, if you know an engraver, maybe.  :P

Jun 25 20:13:37 <Shiral>   Was Sauron getting fidgety without his Ring? =o)
Jun 25 20:13:42 <Jerusha>   Of course
Jun 25 20:13:43 <Shiral>   Hi Jerusha
Jun 25 20:13:53 <DesertRose>   It's gold-plated though, not actual gold, so I'm not sure how well it would hold up to engraving.
Jun 25 20:13:59 <Jerusha>   Hi Shiral

Jun 25 20:14:59 <Evie>   Actually, no, bad idea. Gigi would steal it, and I don't quite trust her with something that powerful.  ;-)
Jun 25 20:15:18 <Derynifank>   Two boys and a girl, deryni
Jun 25 20:15:20 <Jemler>   Gigi, Queen of Cats.\
Jun 25 20:15:20 <Shiral>   And she'd be hard to find
Jun 25 20:15:21 <DesertRose>   LOL, that could get ugly.  Clever cat + the One Ring = TROUBLE!
Jun 25 20:15:29 <Jerusha>   Deryni of ancient Mooryn heritage
Jun 25 20:16:03 <DesertRose>   I wouldn't trust Carys with the One Ring either, she who figured out how to turn on the printer I turned off to keep her from making copies of nothing.
Jun 25 20:16:23 <DesertRose>   So now I have to leave it unplugged unless I actually need to print or copy something.
Jun 25 20:16:31 <Jerusha>   The original copy cat?
Jun 25 20:16:34 <DesertRose>   Because my cat is too smart for her britches, figuratively speaking.
Jun 25 20:16:39 <DesertRose>   Evidently, Jerusha
Jun 25 20:16:39 <The_Bee>   I think Mooryn must have been a major power in its day.
Jun 25 20:16:44 <Derynifank>   Haha lol
Jun 25 20:16:55 <Evie>   Gigi would get the food dispenser to free feed her, and I'd come home to find her twice her original size and waddling up to me happily
Jun 25 20:17:06 <Jemler>   KK, does the word Deryni come from Dour? I've noticed Deryni strongholds end with dour. Kheldour, Lendour, Beldour.
Jun 25 20:17:22 *   Annie has quit (Quit: http://www.kiwiirc.com/ - A hand crafted IRC client)
Jun 25 20:17:23 <Jerusha>   Yes. Tehran was at the centre of Mooryn
Jun 25 20:17:38 <DesertRose>   All the buttons on the printer/copier/scanner are on the top surface of it, and she figured out fairly quickly that she could hit the button that makes copies with her fuzzy feet and make paper come out the out-feed spot, which was apparently entertaining to her.
Jun 25 20:17:43 <Shiral>   Oops, Annie has disappeared
Jun 25 20:17:45 <Jemler>   nite annie
Jun 25 20:17:57 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Good night Annie
Jun 25 20:17:58 <DesertRose>   She said she was getting tired, and she is in the UK, where it's after 1 am right now.

Jun 25 20:18:07 <Shiral>   Well Understandable
Jun 25 20:18:08 <DesertRose>   G'night, Annie.

Jun 25 20:18:22 <Evie>   Night night
Jun 25 20:18:31 <The_Bee>   Annie did tell us she was fading.
Jun 25 20:18:32 <KK>   No, Jemler, it comes from the Welsh word for oak.
Jun 25 20:18:51 <DesertRose>   So I started leaving it powered off unless I actually needed to print, copy, or scan something, until Miss Clever Clogs figured out she could turn on the power button with her fuzzy feet as well.
Jun 25 20:18:57 <Jemler>   ok. i just asw the place names and guessed. thank you.
Jun 25 20:18:59 <DesertRose>   So now it has to stay unplugged until needed.
Jun 25 20:19:28 <Evie>   Although I think the Codex makes that same connection between Deryni and -dour.  I've read it someplace recently
Jun 25 20:19:41 <DesertRose>   I think you're right, Evie.
Jun 25 20:19:57 <DesertRose>   I can't remember exactly where, though.
Jun 25 20:19:58 <Evie>   So that might serve as an in-Eleven Kingdoms etymology, if not the real world one
Jun 25 20:20:01 <DesertRose>   (in Codex)
Jun 25 20:20:36 <KK>   Could be, I suppose.  But I wasn't in Deryniland at the time I coined the name.  :-)

Jun 25 20:23:17 <DesertRose>   Oh, cool, Jemler!
Jun 25 20:23:35 <DesertRose>   It's got to be better than the audio-book of LOTR that my stepdad took out of the library.
Jun 25 20:23:45 <Jemler>   i'd like to convert them to digital, but i don't know how.
Jun 25 20:23:48 <Shiral>    Whoops, Sorry everyone. I have to bail
