May 07 17:16:00 *   KK has joined
May 07 17:16:04 <DesertRose>   Hi KK!
May 07 17:16:06 <The_Bee>   Hi KK
May 07 17:16:12 <KK>   Hello, all.
May 07 17:16:15 <Derynifank>   Hi KK
May 07 17:16:27 <Jemler>   hi kk
May 07 17:16:27 <Evie>   hi
May 07 17:16:28 <DesertRose>   He comes from a very small, rural town in south central South Carolina, and his ancestors were among the founders of the town.
May 07 17:16:39 <KK>   What's up with you guys?
May 07 17:17:08 <Derynifank>   Talking about tracking ancestries
May 07 17:17:25 <Derynifank>   Using the dna testing
May 07 17:17:27 <DesertRose>   And, to put it lightly, he has some issues with racism, but he also has REALLY curly hair for a white man, so I'm thinking that there's a possibility of some African ancestry somewhere in there and if that comes back on that test, he is NOT going to deal well with that concept.
May 07 17:17:29 <The_Bee>   discussing DNA tests and ancestry
May 07 17:17:50 <Shiral>   Hello Katherine
May 07 17:17:58 <KK>   Ah.  I've been at dead-ends for years.  And when I changed coputers, I lost my genealogy program, so I can't get at all my wonderful charts that I spent hours entering.
May 07 17:18:09 <Shiral>   Been making a Roman bust in Sculpey
May 07 17:18:33 <The_Bee>   which Roman?
May 07 17:18:37 <KK>   Who is "he"?
May 07 17:18:42 <DesertRose>   My last serious boyfriend was African American (Festil, who hasn't come to chat in half of forever), and that went over with my stepdad like a lead balloon, but I was thirty years old and basically told him that he didn't get to tell me who I was allowed to date anymore.
May 07 17:18:46 <DesertRose>   My stepfather.
May 07 17:18:53 <Evie>   hi! this is DD
May 07 17:18:59 <DesertRose>   Hi Roo!
May 07 17:19:03 <Shiral>   A relly really small Roman,  Bee
May 07 17:19:03 <Derynifank>   No way to retrieve your geneology program?
May 07 17:19:15 <Shiral>   How annoying about the Genealogy program, KK
May 07 17:19:37 <DesertRose>   Irritating when upgraded computers/operating systems lose important data, to say the least.
May 07 17:19:44 <KK>   I need to redownload it, I think.  It was so old, it was installed from CD's.
May 07 17:19:48 <Shiral>   Hi Evie's DD
May 07 17:20:02 <Evie>   She says hello back, Shiral
May 07 17:20:11 <KK>   Hi, DD.
May 07 17:20:44 <Derynifank>   Hey Evie, are you ready to go cruising?
May 07 17:20:45 <Jemler>   DR, did you see the story of a dad who disowned his daughter for going to the prom with an African American friend?
May 07 17:20:48 <DesertRose>   Also, I'm not exactly an Aryan superwoman myself.
May 07 17:21:00 <DesertRose>   I saw a glimpse of the article but didn't read it.
May 07 17:21:00 *   Shiral waves, then sets up the tea table with cream scones and strawberries
May 07 17:21:14 <Derynifank>   Yummy
May 07 17:21:34 <Jemler>   what about your data files? can you get them?
May 07 17:21:38 <DesertRose>   Since I can prove Cherokee and Saponi ancestry on my father's side, and I strongly suspect either Cherokee or Choctaw on my mom's.
May 07 17:21:42 *   Shiral snaps fingers and decorates chat room with bouquets of May Flowers
May 07 17:21:53 <DesertRose>   So I'm not the whitest white girl ever to white.
May 07 17:21:56 <Evie>   I am very ready, DerynifanK!
May 07 17:21:57 *   The_Bee adds wine coolers
May 07 17:22:22 <KK>   I have the data, just can't read it.
May 07 17:22:50 <KK>   Not that it's been a high priority of late, with all that's been going on.
May 07 17:22:55 <Jemler>   ok, at least you have that.
May 07 17:23:06 <DesertRose>   Just all the ancestry I've been able to trace other than the indigenous American is out of the British Isles, which is really weird to me.
May 07 17:23:07 <Shiral>   You've had kind of an eventful year, yeah
May 07 17:23:18 <Derynifank>   Howvis your mom doing  KK?
May 07 17:23:32 <KK>   Yeah, I think I can probably get the program back via ancestry.com.
May 07 17:23:35 <DesertRose>   Yes, how is LBM?
May 07 17:24:02 <KK>   Mother's doing ok, looking forward to Mother's Day outing next weekend, to brunch at the Stonewall Jackson Hotel.
May 07 17:24:08 <DesertRose>   Cool!
May 07 17:24:23 <DesertRose>   Brunch sounds lovely.
May 07 17:24:25 <Derynifank>   Sounds lovely
May 07 17:25:02 <DesertRose>   I'm not sure my mom is even going to be in town for Mother's Day, because her high school reunion is that weekend.
May 07 17:25:54 <DesertRose>   So she and my stepdad might be on the road back from Charleston on Mother's Day, and in any case, she hates crowds like Loris hates Deryni, so we never take her out to eat on Mother's Day itself since everybody in the world is taking their mom out for a meal.  We always do it some other day around then.
May 07 17:26:27 <Evie>   I have a new app on my phone which will take face photos and make them smile, so  I've been having fun making my serious or scowly-faced action figures smile with it.  Here's one example:  https://flic.kr/p/U19Y15
May 07 17:26:37 <Derynifank>   Probably a good idea
May 07 17:26:40 <The_Bee>   My mom died in 2011, age 98
May 07 17:26:48 <Evie>   LOL @ hating crowds like Loris hates Deryni
May 07 17:26:52 <DesertRose>   Sorry to hear that, Bee, but that's a good long life.
May 07 17:27:31 <DesertRose>   She also is low-key immunocompromised, so crowds are sort of a bad idea for her from a medical perspective too, but she also hates them.
May 07 17:27:32 <Jemler>   who is that a pic of evie?
May 07 17:27:51 <Derynifank>   Cool
May 07 17:28:09 <KK>   That is impressive!
May 07 17:28:24 <The_Bee>   so now you don't have to fake a smile for the camera.  An pp can fake it for you.
May 07 17:28:33 <Jemler>   lol
May 07 17:29:04 <Evie>   That's my Morgan Haldane action figure (very distant descendant of both Alaric and Kelson)
May 07 17:29:43 <Evie>   Yes, Bee, but it has mixed results. Sometimes the smile looks really natural, but sometimes it doesn't
May 07 17:29:58 <Evie>   But it gives me a few more options for photostories
May 07 17:30:52 <Jemler>   what is that app called?
May 07 17:30:53 <The_Bee>   The face itself is surprisingly lifelike
May 07 17:31:23 <Evie>   It's called Faceapp.  Mine is the version for Android, although the iPhone version came out first
May 07 17:31:42 <Evie>   Yes, the newer action figures have high quality face sculpts. That's one reason I love them.
May 07 17:32:27 <Evie>   The downside is, the more realistic it is, the more expensive it usually is, so I only have a few of them, and in most cases I bought the head separately and put it on an inexpensive body
May 07 17:32:53 <Shiral>   Interesting app
May 07 17:32:54 <DesertRose>   That sounds really ghoulish if we didn't know you were talking about toys, Evie!
May 07 17:32:59 <Evie>   LOL
May 07 17:33:14 <Shiral>   Dr. Frankenstein lives. =o)
May 07 17:33:17 <DesertRose>   LOL
May 07 17:33:32 <Jemler>   her maiden name was Frankenstein! :)
May 07 17:33:36 <DesertRose>   That's your new nickname, Evie.  Dr. Victoria Frankenstein.
May 07 17:33:53 <Evie>   Here's another one, but in this one the smile doesn't quite work with the intense gaze, because it makes him look rather diabolical:  https://flic.kr/p/TmCaa6
May 07 17:34:10 <Jemler>   Loris?
May 07 17:34:42 <Evie>   But it works really well for the aged and youthened photos
May 07 17:34:46 <The_Bee>   EEEvil grin upper right
May 07 17:34:57 <Evie>   LOL! I know, right?
May 07 17:35:03 <Derynifank>   Or Gorony
May 07 17:35:16 <Shiral>   Scary looking bloke!
May 07 17:35:36 <The_Bee>   lower left more LORIS-LIKE
May 07 17:36:40 <KK>   The youthened face is interesting.
May 07 17:37:06 <Derynifank>   Loris was oldrr eith white hair so I thought maybe Gorony
May 07 17:37:08 <DesertRose>   Baby Devlin, when he and James were getting into mischief at school.  :)
May 07 17:37:28 <Evie>   Yes, the app does two smile version, aging, youthening, two female versions and a male version.  You do NOT want to see what I'd look like as a man.  LOL!
May 07 17:37:46 <Evie>   Yes, that works, DR
May 07 17:38:01 <Jemler>   what about warin?
May 07 17:38:05 <DesertRose>   I'm not sure I want to know what I'd look like as a dude either.
May 07 17:38:48 <Derynifank>   Gorony was an apt pupil of Loris' and pretty evil I think
May 07 17:38:53 <DesertRose>   I have a fairish idea, because if you look at my maternal uncle around my age and just switch out the nose (he got my maternal grandmother's nose, and my nose is a trait from my paternal side), that's probably pretty close.
May 07 17:39:55 <DesertRose>   He and my mom could not deny they are brother and sister if they wanted to, and I look a good deal like my mom, so a couple of times people have thought I was his daughter rather than his niece.
May 07 17:41:42 <DesertRose>   Did I kill chat?
May 07 17:41:55 <Evie>   It still looks like it's breathing to me.
May 07 17:41:58 <The_Bee>   not yet
May 07 17:42:00 <Evie>   I'll check its pulse
May 07 17:42:00 <DesertRose>   LOL,good
May 07 17:42:30 <Derynifank>   No. Still has a pulse
May 07 17:42:53 <Evie>   No, I'm just in a house with lots of distractions around me, and packing for the road trip home will probably need to take place soon, although DH has put it off a bit to allow me some chat time
May 07 17:43:18 <DesertRose>   I am incapussitated and typing right handed only because there is a Carys on my left arm.
May 07 17:43:24 <Evie>   Since it's early chat today, it works around our travel schedule more easily
May 07 17:43:35 <Shiral>   I like the term Incapussitated. =o)
May 07 17:43:56 <Shiral>   Tatiana does that to my art table. I think she likes the warmth from the lamp
May 07 17:44:06 <DesertRose>   There's incapupitated for the dog folks, too.
May 07 17:44:15 <KK>   Me, too, Shiral.
May 07 17:44:38 <Shiral>   Or else she's hinting that she wants a portrait of herself...or both
May 07 17:44:42 <DesertRose>   LOL
May 07 17:44:52 <Evie>   I'm fairly sure I will miss the last chat of May, though, and absolutely certain I'll miss early chat in June, since at that time I'll be on a trans-Atlantic flight home.
May 07 17:45:20 <DesertRose>   Okay, fair warning and good reasoning.  :)
May 07 17:45:23 <Derynifank>   Dogs don't interfere with typing as much as cats, don't try to help
May 07 17:45:40 <Shiral>   Dogs can't jump up the way cats can
May 07 17:45:40 <DesertRose>   No, but they sometimes interfere with one's ability to get up by occupying one's lap. :)
May 07 17:46:02 <The_Bee>   You can tell us all about your travels when you return.
May 07 17:46:22 <Evie>   We have wifi on the cruise ship, but whether I'll make late night (for me) chat will depend on how well recovered I am from jet lag by then, how good the wifi signal is in my cabin, and whether we have an early wake-up that next Monday for one of the excursions
May 07 17:46:23 <Derynifank>   Hope you have a fantastic trip Evie
May 07 17:46:29 *   Laurna has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
May 07 17:46:37 <DesertRose>   Drat, we lost Laurna.
May 07 17:46:54 <DesertRose>   And incapupitated would cover being unable to get up because your lap is occupied by a dog.  :)
May 07 17:47:07 <Derynifank>   Mibbit strikes again
May 07 17:47:21 <DesertRose>   Yes, have fun on your river cruise/trip to Europe.  Take lots of pics!
May 07 17:47:22 <The_Bee>   HAS ANYONE TRIED THE nEW CHAT ON THE WEBSITE?
May 07 17:47:32 <DesertRose>   I have not, actually, and as an admin, I probably should.
May 07 17:47:47 <KK>   There's a new one?
May 07 17:47:51 <DesertRose>   Yes.
May 07 17:48:03 <Evie>   I tried it for just a few seconds, since I was on a phone rather than a laptop, although I'm sure it would work much better from a proper computer rather than a phone
May 07 17:48:27 <Evie>   It's one that will hopefully be more reliable than Mibbit, although it ends up in this same chatroom
May 07 17:48:33 <KK>   Does it replace the one that was there, or is it in addition to?
May 07 17:48:51 <Shiral>   I'm on mIRC
May 07 17:48:52 <DesertRose>   In addition too.
May 07 17:48:54 <DesertRose>   *to
May 07 17:49:01 <The_Bee>   My laptop doesn't tell me when my caps lock is on.  that can cause problems entering passwords.
May 07 17:49:01 <DesertRose>   http://rhemuthcastle.com/chat/ is the link bynw provided
May 07 17:49:44 *   DR_test (DR_test@OWIRCN-6c62fc86.fl.comcast.net) has joined
May 07 17:49:57 <The_Bee>   I got a message about a not secure connetion
May 07 17:50:05 <DR_test>   Here I am, testing the chat link like the totally-not-distracted admin I'm supposed to be.  :D
May 07 17:50:17 *   revanne (Mibbit@OWIRCN-13f5c3ee.ip.skylogicnet.com) has joined
May 07 17:50:20 <DesertRose>   Hi revanne
May 07 17:50:23 <Shiral>   Hello Revanne
May 07 17:50:24 <Jemler>   hi revanne
May 07 17:50:27 *   kik has joined
May 07 17:50:36 <revanne>   Hi
May 07 17:50:38 <Derynifank>   Hi Revanne
May 07 17:50:42 <DesertRose>   hi kik, Evil Twin of the Queen.
May 07 17:50:55 <kik>   OK, that works.  Yes, it's my Evil Twin. tm
May 07 17:51:12 <revanne>   Hi Kzk
May 07 17:51:18 <Evie>   But it might be worth trying out, for people who have trouble with Mibbit
May 07 17:51:24 <Jemler>   that's kk
May 07 17:51:25 <kik>   Let
May 07 17:51:29 <revanne>   Or even KK
May 07 17:51:30 <DR_test>   Come to think, I may have tested this one before, when bynw was fiddling with it, because the interface looks familiar.
May 07 17:51:43 <kik>   Let's see if it uses the forward slash commands.
May 07 17:51:49 *   kik leaves
May 07 17:51:56 <Evie>   It should use standard IRC commands
May 07 17:52:12 <kik>   Nope, same as the old one.  I guess only Mibbit does that.
May 07 17:52:25 <Evie>   Hi revanne
May 07 17:52:32 <revanne>   Hi
May 07 17:52:44 <KK>   Hello, Revanne.
May 07 17:52:55 <Evie>   What were you trying to do, KK/kik?
May 07 17:52:56 <KK>   We're testing the new chat link.
May 07 17:52:59 <The_Bee>   Does anyone else keep getting warned about an insecure connection with the new chat?
May 07 17:53:06 <DesertRose>   I didn't, no, Bee.
May 07 17:53:21 <revanne>   I meant to show up earlier but fell asleep
May 07 17:53:25 <The_Bee>   maybe it's my computer.
May 07 17:53:26 <KK>   kik was trying to get that command.... waiti, I did it wrong.  BTB
May 07 17:53:39 *   kik leaves
May 07 17:53:41 <DesertRose>   With all the traipsing about Scotland you've been doing, no wonder you took a nap!
May 07 17:53:46 <kik>   Nope.
May 07 17:54:04 <KK>   I did.
May 07 17:54:13 <revanne>   It's beautiful though
May 07 17:54:19 <DesertRose>   Looks it from the photos!
May 07 17:54:29 <Evie>   On this end, we see "*kik leaves" in purple (on my end) and without the quote marks
May 07 17:54:31 <KK>   Scotland is always beautiful.
May 07 17:55:12 <DesertRose>   Having a cat-fight (as in a fight with my cat) because she's now on Codex (which has taken up semi-permanent residence left of my laptop because I'm a slacker who hasn't reshelved it) and Carys objects to me typing.
May 07 17:55:32 <kik>   I guess it sort of works.  The other one is nicer to look at, though; bigger type.
May 07 17:55:34 <revanne>   The weather is wonderful so I'll go home with a suntan
May 07 17:55:46 <DesertRose>   Yay for nice weather!
May 07 17:55:48 <Shiral>   The Pgymy lions have staged a battle, telling me it's time I got up to feed them
May 07 17:55:51 <DesertRose>   I don't do tans, though.
May 07 17:56:07 <KK>   Me either, DR.
May 07 17:56:15 <Evie>   It might have looked bigger on your side of things, but the command has always been the same size on the viewer end, at least for me
May 07 17:56:32 <Derynifank>   Wish i could see your pictures. Know  they are beautiful
May 07 17:56:39 <KK>   The text is heavier on the old chat.
May 07 17:56:49 <DesertRose>   I took too much sun damage in my Arizona childhood for one thing.  For another, I took a medication in my adolescent years that made me photosensitive and even though I haven't taken the medication in something close to 30 years, the photosensitivity never went away, so I don't tan.  I burn, it peels, I get new freckles.
May 07 17:57:37 <kik>   On the other hand, the space where you type is farther up the page, so it won't be interfered with by that text that appears when the site is catching up.
May 07 17:57:45 <Evie>   Wow, that's a really long-term side effect!
May 07 17:57:49 <DesertRose>   So when I go to the beach (which I dearly love), I positively shellac myself in SPF 30, dead minimum and reapply religiously.
May 07 17:57:49 <revanne>   I'll try and work out Fickr and try to post them on the foru
May 07 17:58:11 <kik>   Actually, I could get used to this one.
May 07 17:58:15 <Derynifank>   Thank you!
May 07 17:58:32 <DesertRose>   It was a psychiatric med (tricyclic antidepressant), and psych meds can do some very weird things, and I have a known tendency to react weirdly to a lot of them.
May 07 17:59:24 <The_Bee>   I'd rather sit under a shady tree with a book than sunbathe
May 07 17:59:34 <Shiral>   I don't do tans either. And these days, I look kind of like Mother Theresa goes to the beach in terms of how much I cover up
May 07 17:59:40 <DesertRose>   And my upper back/shoulders (plus one spot on my right upper arm) are already scarred all to hell from having precancerous spots removed before they could get worse.
May 07 17:59:56 <DesertRose>   So no suntans for this Floridian.
May 07 18:00:29 <kik>   I figured out a new function on my printer yesterday: how to scan a document using the sheet feeder, and have it all go into the same file.  No more putting separate pages onto the glass plate and jumping up and down to tend it, at least for some things.
May 07 18:00:43 *   Laurna (Mibbit@OWIRCN-55282c39.res.rr.com) has joined
May 07 18:00:53 <DesertRose>   I don't mind sitting on the beach (as long as I'm suitably coated in sunblock and wearing sunglasses), but I do NOT tan.
May 07 18:00:53 <The_Bee>   wb laurna
May 07 18:00:54 <Evie>   Hi Laurna
May 07 18:00:57 <DesertRose>   Rehi Laurna
May 07 18:01:00 <kik>   It does it as a pdf file, but that's ok.  I usually save scans as jpg, for some reason.
May 07 18:01:02 <Laurna>   Hello everyone
May 07 18:01:12 <revanne>   I'm wearing a sunhat and long-sleeved t-shirt with my walking trousers but some days there isn't much sgade where we are walking.
May 07 18:01:30 <Laurna>   Evie just saw your Morgan Haldane photos smiling.  Love them.  LOL
May 07 18:01:31 <Derynifank>   Wb Launa
May 07 18:01:36 <revanne>   Hi Laurna
May 07 18:01:53 <DesertRose>   In some cases, pdf format might take up less drive space than jpg anyway.
May 07 18:01:57 <Laurna>   How many miles did you walk today  Revanne?
May 07 18:01:58 <Evie>   LOL, yes, he has one regular looking smile and one that's almost a laughing grin
May 07 18:02:02 <kik>   I've never been a sun-bather, though I used to tan well, when I was young.  Too much knowledge now of what damage sun can do to one's skin.
May 07 18:02:24 <revanne>   Only 9 today -it's our eadiest day.
May 07 18:02:33 <DesertRose>   I got tanned as a kid in Arizona, because it's almost impossible not to in that brutal sun, and also, kid.  Spent a lot of time at the lake or the pool.
May 07 18:02:55 <kik>   It's been in the 50'sF here all weekend.
May 07 18:03:02 <Laurna>   Good for your revanne.
May 07 18:03:42 <DesertRose>   But the psych med that caused the photosensitivity that never went away, I started taking around age 12, and that was when I quit even trying to tan because it became obvious it wasn't working, and even so, having gotten very dedicated about not tanning that early in life, I'm STILL having to go for twice-annual skin checks because of the skin cancer risk from being a kid in Arizona.
May 07 18:04:05 <revanne>   Yesterday was 20 which was a bit of a slog. I haven't walked 20 miles si ce I was a teenager
May 07 18:04:14 <Evie>   It's pleasant outside today here, around 68F, though it got pretty chilly a couple of nights ago.  But that just made the hot tub even more appealing.
May 07 18:04:32 <DesertRose>   It's been unseasonably cool here, mid 70s F, which is not cold by any stretch, but is cooler than normal for Florida in May.
May 07 18:04:50 <Laurna>   Oh I would like to be warm , It is chilly today
May 07 18:05:06 <Jemler>   it's 56f here
May 07 18:05:07 <Evie>   At home I think it got up to 74F, which would be perfect for me, but this is on the cool side of pleasant for me after colder temps earlier this weekend
May 07 18:05:08 <Laurna>   61degrees
May 07 18:05:26 <DesertRose>   That's pretty chilly for SoCal in May, is it not, Laurna?
May 07 18:05:27 <revanne>   Here has been about 68 which is unseasonably war.m for the highlands in May.
May 07 18:05:36 <kik>   So, you're on a walking tour, Revanne?
May 07 18:05:51 <Laurna>   I am glad it is not Jemler's tempature.  burr
May 07 18:06:02 <Evie>   Yeah, 61 F is colder than I like for this time of year, although in January or Feb that would be downright pleasant
May 07 18:06:29 <Laurna>   revanne has been sharring some wonder photos of the highlands.   love it.
May 07 18:06:29 <revanne>   Yes. We're walking the East Highland Way from Fort William to Aviemore
May 07 18:06:33 <DesertRose>   Yeah, anything below 65 F is too cold for my wimpy Floridian butt!  :D
May 07 18:06:34 <kik>   Where are you today, Evie? Not at home, I gather.
May 07 18:06:56 <Evie>   No, we're in Clarksville, TN.  Our friend who lives here graduated from nursing school on Friday
May 07 18:07:01 <kik>   Wow, that sounds like a cool walk.
May 07 18:07:04 *   Kelric (~IceChat9@32F4F9.AFCB16.CAC8DB.A93869) has joined
May 07 18:07:07 <DesertRose>   Hi Kelric
May 07 18:07:18 <The_Bee>   hi kelric
May 07 18:07:19 <Shiral>   We had a heatwave this week, it was in the low 60
May 07 18:07:21 <Evie>   I wasn't sure I would be able to make it today, but since it's early chat, that doesn't interfere with our four hour drive home too much
May 07 18:07:24 <revanne>   Yes -it's fantastic
May 07 18:07:26 <Derynifank>   Hi kelric
May 07 18:07:32 <Shiral>   yesterday, now it's in the low seventies and sunny
May 07 18:07:35 <Shiral>   Hi Kelric
May 07 18:07:41 <DesertRose>   I have no qualms about being a wimp when it comes to cold weather.
May 07 18:08:07 <Jemler>   hi kelric
May 07 18:08:10 <Evie>   So you had a visitor last weekend, KK?
May 07 18:08:18 <kik>   Nursing School graduation--cool!
May 07 18:08:31 <DesertRose>   I've never lived anywhere (not since I was itty bitty, anyway) that it got significantly cold, and I do NOT do snow, and if that makes me a weather wimp, so be it.
May 07 18:08:36 <Shiral>   BRB Pygmy lions insist on food
May 07 18:08:42 <Evie>   Yes, and she got an Outstanding Student Nurse Award, so that was a pleasant surprise
May 07 18:08:45 <DesertRose>   Poor starving neglected beasts.
May 07 18:08:57 <revanne>   Purrr
May 07 18:09:15 <kik>   Yes, a fan I'd met probably 15-20 years ago when I went to visit Andre Norton.  She's losing her vision from a form of macular, and wanted to see me one more time.
May 07 18:09:18 <Derynifank>   That's terrific for her
May 07 18:09:32 <DesertRose>   Macular degeneration sucks, but yay for the visit!
May 07 18:09:38 <revanne>   Once fed that is. Before food is meeeiou
May 07 18:10:01 <Evie>   That's sad, but I'm glad she was able to get to see you again
May 07 18:10:40 <Derynifank>   I meant tertific for  the graduate. Hope you had a lovrky visit with your fan
May 07 18:10:49 <kik>   Yeah, she'd been to a con in Williamsburg, and had been doing some genealogy research in my area before that, so it was a good time to do it.  And fortunately, we were here.
May 07 18:11:05 <DesertRose>   Cool!
May 07 18:11:12 <Laurna>   That is nice.
May 07 18:11:25 <Evie>   How close are you to Williamsburg? Colonial Williamsburg is on my bucket list
May 07 18:11:35 <kik>   Apparently she and her brother found oodle of relatives, both dead and alive.
May 07 18:11:45 <Derynifank>   Lovely visit. Crazy fingers
May 07 18:11:49 <DesertRose>   I've been to Williamsburg, once, when I was in 9th grade, for a chorus competition at Busch Gardens, so I didn't even get to go to Colonial Williamsburg, although I was really just a little under the age where I'd really appreciate it anyway.
May 07 18:12:03 <kik>   It's about a 4-5 hr. drive, over by the coast.
May 07 18:12:21 <kik>   Traffic getting out on Sunday afternoon is always brutal.
May 07 18:12:53 <Evie>   I would have loved a trip there even as a young kid, but then again I've always been a bit of a history buff, and living in Italy between ages 11-13 just made me even more so
May 07 18:13:14 *   Kelric has quit (Ping timeout: 121 seconds)
May 07 18:13:23 <Shiral>   And I'm back
May 07 18:13:27 <DesertRose>   I was heading that direction, but it was another year or two before I'd have really gotten the most out of a visit to Colonial Williamsburg.
May 07 18:13:34 <Evie>   Hello, back
May 07 18:13:54 <DesertRose>   Are those poor, starved, neglected kitties satisfied now? :P
May 07 18:13:56 <kik>   I've been 4-5 times, once with SCA friends, when we pavaned in the Governor's Ballroom.
May 07 18:14:02 <DesertRose>   Oh, COOL!
May 07 18:14:11 <Evie>   Wow!
May 07 18:14:18 <revanne>   Wow KK
May 07 18:14:20 <Shiral>   They're not coming between me and the computer, so that's good
May 07 18:14:24 <DesertRose>   :)
May 07 18:14:56 <Evie>   AnnieUK once sent me a picture of an SCA feast set up in an actual castle Great Hall.  Me:  "I hate you, and I mean that in the most affectionate and cordial of ways!"  :-D
May 07 18:15:05 <DesertRose>   ROFL
May 07 18:15:13 <revanne>   Lol
May 07 18:15:22 <DesertRose>   Yeah, that's the advantage that Drachenwald has over the rest of the Knowne World.
May 07 18:15:24 <kik>   I went to one in Wales, while we were living in Ireland.
May 07 18:15:34 <DesertRose>   They have actual, honest-to-goodness castles.
May 07 18:15:39 <kik>   And also one in Germany.
May 07 18:16:09 <Evie>   We are hoping to meet up with one of our SCA friends while we are in Germany.  He's a knight originally from our kingdom, but he married a German girl and is living over there for a year.
May 07 18:16:20 <DesertRose>   The closest thing to me would be Castillo de San Marcos, and renting that sucker out for an event would be...prohibitively expensive is an understatement of epic proportions.
May 07 18:16:28 <Derynifank>   And thanks yo Edward I Wales  has  the most castles  of any country
May 07 18:16:30 <kik>   And then she moves to the States with him?
May 07 18:16:40 <Evie>   They are spending their first year of married life in Germany, moving back to the US for a year, and then will decide from there where the two of them want to live permanently
May 07 18:16:53 <kik>   Ah.  That sounds fair.
May 07 18:16:58 <revanne>   Hopefully you'll see so.e hood ones on your trip Evie
May 07 18:17:04 <kik>   What does he do for a loving?
May 07 18:17:10 <kik>   living
May 07 18:17:21 <Shiral>   Well, he gets married for a loving. =o)
May 07 18:17:24 <DesertRose>   LOL
May 07 18:17:25 <Evie>   Not sure what he is doing these days
May 07 18:17:27 <kik>   Yep
May 07 18:17:27 <Laurna>   I like that
May 07 18:17:31 <Evie>   LOL, Shiral!
May 07 18:17:42 <Jemler>   he probably takes her to dinner and a show!
May 07 18:17:50 <Shiral>   Naughty me, naughty me.... =o)
May 07 18:18:12 <kik>   BRB
May 07 18:18:16 <Jemler>   no, no no. it's 'Naughty Naughty'
May 07 18:18:32 <DesertRose>   Incapussitated and reduced to right hand only typing again.
May 07 18:19:11 <DesertRose>   Miss Purr's watch reads Pet Me O'Clock.
May 07 18:19:29 <Evie>   I think they met when they were both tourists in FL and staying at the same hotel.  They started talking and hit it off, then kept in touch via the Internet until they had a chance to meet in person again a few times, which is when they decided to marry
May 07 18:19:43 <revanne>   Hi Carys
May 07 18:19:58 <DesertRose>   She says, "Purrrrrrrr"
May 07 18:20:05 <Laurna>   wow that is wonderful
May 07 18:20:50 <Evie>   When she came back to the US to meet him again, her best friend wanted to meet him too to make sure she wasn't getting caught up with a shady character, so he came with her as a chaperone.  He ended up being the one to marry them, being a minister.  :-D
May 07 18:21:16 <Derynifank>   Cool story
May 07 18:21:27 <Evie>   He had an uncanny resemblance to Tom Hiddleston, so we joked about them getting married by Loki
May 07 18:21:31 <DesertRose>   LOL
May 07 18:21:32 <revanne>   Lol
May 07 18:21:39 <Laurna>   must have made a good impression
May 07 18:22:29 <revanne>   Typing o  my pho
May 07 18:22:51 <DesertRose>   Getting married by a trickster deity seems like it could be...problematic.
May 07 18:23:01 <Evie>   What, the groom on the best friend/minister, or Loki the minister on me and DH?  :-D
May 07 18:23:01 <Shiral>   One would think so, yes
May 07 18:23:13 <kik>   I'm back.  Great story!
May 07 18:23:16 <DesertRose>   Like having one of the fae conduct the ceremony...
May 07 18:23:16 <revanne>   Going to say goodnight as brain and fingers no longer coordinating
May 07 18:23:24 <DesertRose>   G;night, revanne
May 07 18:23:31 <Shiral>   Night, Revanne. Enjoy the rest of your holiday
May 07 18:23:35 <kik>   Night, Revanne.  Happy hiking.
May 07 18:23:36 <Evie>   Goodnight, revanne
May 07 18:23:41 <revanne>   Thank you
May 07 18:23:47 <Evie>   "Loki is officiating at our wedding. What could possibly go wrong?"
May 07 18:23:54 <The_Bee>   nighters, Revanne.  enjoy your walking tour.
May 07 18:23:59 *   revanne has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
May 07 18:24:01 <Derynifank>   Goodnight snd happy hiking
May 07 18:24:03 <DesertRose>   LOL, yeah, something like that
May 07 18:24:23 <Laurna>   oops missed Revanne
May 07 18:25:16 <Evie>   Have just finished making a Star Wars bedsheet for a doll bedroom
May 07 18:25:22 <DesertRose>   :)
May 07 18:26:00 <DesertRose>   Am now imagining a wedding conducted by one of the Fair Folk.
May 07 18:26:01 <Laurna>   Not Devlins's room I hope
May 07 18:26:12 <DesertRose>   You'd want to go over the vows REALLY carefully.
May 07 18:26:25 <Evie>   LOL!  Probably not, unless I do a flash back story to his childhood
May 07 18:26:26 <Laurna>   lol DR
May 07 18:26:36 <kik>   A Star Wards bedsheet?
May 07 18:26:41 <kik>   Wars
May 07 18:26:46 <Evie>   Yes, it's for one of my modern Littles
May 07 18:26:54 <Laurna>   LOL  good slip  KK
May 07 18:27:01 <DesertRose>   LOL, indeed, Laurna
May 07 18:27:06 <Derynifank>   My grandson got to go to mgm Orlando  and the Jedi academy and got to fight Darth Vader. Thinknhr would make a good   page
May 07 18:27:13 <Evie>   Now I'm imagining setting up wards in space. LOL!
May 07 18:27:27 <Laurna>   Wef need some Star Wards Trilogy.  Deryni in space  !  YES
May 07 18:27:28 <DesertRose>   How would you even do that?
May 07 18:27:29 <Shiral>   That would be problematic
May 07 18:27:41 <DesertRose>   Like, without earth, how do you cast wards?
May 07 18:27:59 <Derynifank>   Deryni in space would be really cool
May 07 18:28:00 <DesertRose>   Or some solid ground beneath you, not necessarily Earth per se, but A planet.
May 07 18:28:22 <Laurna>   Perhaps differnt planets offer differnt types of wards
May 07 18:28:31 <Evie>   Well, if wards are spherical in shape (which DM states), then you'd use magnetic ward cubes and just float them in the "corners." Orienting your "corners" would be the trick.
May 07 18:28:49 <DesertRose>   I'm thinking how would you do it, for example, on a spacecraft.
May 07 18:28:58 <Laurna>   so adventures go from planet to planet lookeing for different types of earth
May 07 18:29:05 <Derynifank>   Or your ward  could be  a bubble with atmosphere
May 07 18:29:21 <DesertRose>   And part of my brain is still stuck on the fae wedding.
May 07 18:29:23 <Evie>   Yes, since wards are essentially bubbles anyway
May 07 18:29:42 <Shiral>   I hear it would be very small affair, DR. =o)
May 07 18:30:06 <DesertRose>   Depends on the specific sort of Fair Folk.
May 07 18:30:23 <Evie>   I was just about to type "depends on your species of Fae."  LOL!
May 07 18:30:23 <DesertRose>   In Welsh mythology, there's the tale of Rhiannon, who was Fae but married a human.
May 07 18:30:31 <The_Bee>   Yes.  Some Fae are tall.
May 07 18:30:45 <DesertRose>   So she can't have been teensy like the "little people" of Irish fair folk legends.
May 07 18:31:06 <DesertRose>   Spoiler alert for Rhiannon: it did not end well.
May 07 18:31:45 <Evie>   Like Titania, I would imagine, since her name implies large size (or at least as large as the Shakespearean actor playing the role)
May 07 18:32:07 <DesertRose>   Yes, and Titania was a queen of the Fae.
May 07 18:32:33 <DesertRose>   If I'm remembering A Midsummer Night's Dream correctly.  It's been a while since I read it.
May 07 18:33:23 <Derynifank>   Need to go find some dinner  for  us so  will say goodnight. Have a good week  all
May 07 18:33:25 <Evie>   My Laurel played Oberon in MSD, but he joked he was miscast and should have played Titania
May 07 18:33:30 <DesertRose>   Okay, g'night, Derynifank
May 07 18:33:35 <DesertRose>   LOL
May 07 18:33:48 <The_Bee>   bye DFK
May 07 18:33:49 *   Derynifank has quit (Quit: http://www.mibbit.com ajax IRC Client)
May 07 18:33:58 <Shiral>   Oops, missed DFK
May 07 18:34:07 <kik>   Me too
May 07 18:34:45 <Evie>   (He looked very much like Michael Praed when Praed was still playing Robin of Sherwood, so he looked the part of Oberon and had a large circle of female admirers, but since he was gay, he joked he should have been cast as the Fairy Queen.)
May 07 18:34:54 <DesertRose>   LOL
May 07 18:35:07 <Shiral>   Michael Praed was VERY easy on the eyes when he played ROS. =o)
May 07 18:35:26 <Laurna>   Loved both robins
May 07 18:35:33 <kik>   Julianne would definitely agre with you on that, Shiral!
May 07 18:35:41 <DesertRose>   That sounds like a joke that one of our local double peers (Laurel/Pelican) would make on himself.
May 07 18:35:46 <kik>   She's a BIG RoS fan.
May 07 18:35:50 <DesertRose>   That she is.
May 07 18:35:58 <Evie>   Yes, and since Master Johannes looked enough like him to get double-takes on a regular basis from people thinking Praed had shown up at an SCA event, you can imagine some of the hiliarious situations that came up
May 07 18:36:07 <DesertRose>   I'd say at least 25% of her Facebook posts relate to it!  :D
May 07 18:36:14 <DesertRose>   ROFL!
May 07 18:36:21 <Laurna>   Fun
May 07 18:36:42 <DesertRose>   Although the Trimarian double peer doesn't look like anyone famous.
May 07 18:36:51 <DesertRose>   He just has that sort of quirky sense of humor.
May 07 18:36:54 <The_Bee>   Shakespeare's Midsummer fae may have been human-sized, but in the Tempest, Aries sings "In a cowslip's bell I lie."
May 07 18:37:06 <Evie>   I liked Jason Connery's Robin Hood also, but I have a special soft spot for the Praed version because he reminds me of my late Master.
May 07 18:37:07 <DesertRose>   He got me smacked by a queen with his sense of humor at my second or third event.
May 07 18:37:45 <Evie>   Maybe the Shakespearean fae were "elastic" and could change size at will
May 07 18:37:49 <DesertRose>   LOL
May 07 18:37:53 <kik>   Smacked by a queen?  What did you do?!
May 07 18:38:31 <DesertRose>   Master Iefan (the aforementioned double peer) was conducting an impromptu new participants' class (which had not originally been on the schedule but, basically, someone asked him nicely so he ran it).
May 07 18:39:06 <DesertRose>   He is gay and very out of the closet, and because the class was impromptu, he was trying to eat while conducting it, when Her Majesty walked in.
May 07 18:40:11 <Shiral>   Oh, I know Julianne loves ROS. =o)
May 07 18:40:22 <kik>   And...?
May 07 18:40:28 <DesertRose>   He'd just taken a bite of his sandwich, which he very quickly got down his gullet so he could appropriately greet the Queen, being a double peer, but he made a wisecrack about being able to swallow quickly, and I snickered audibly, at which point Her Majesty Trimaris smacked me on the back of my veiled head with her fan and admonished me that ladies do not laugh at such off color jokes.
May 07 18:40:48 <kik>   LOL
May 07 18:41:03 <Laurna>   Oh dear
May 07 18:41:13 <Evie>   LOL
May 07 18:41:20 <DesertRose>   She didn't know me from Adam's house-cat, because, as previously stated, this was my second or third event ever in my life.
May 07 18:41:38 <DesertRose>   And she may to this day not remember bopping me in the head with her fan.
May 07 18:41:55 <DesertRose>   Particularly since all she saw of me was a blue-veiled head and a blue dress.
May 07 18:41:57 <kik>   Well, she was right that ladies do not laugh <audibly> at such jokes.  <g>
May 07 18:41:59 <The_Bee>   There was a Robin Hood TV show in the 1950s.
May 07 18:42:19 <Jemler>   he must have lots of practice! :)
May 07 18:42:22 <DesertRose>   Which outfit was actually an old costume from Biblical productions at church.
May 07 18:42:39 <Laurna>   I hope you still giggle behind your veil when the queen is not looking\
May 07 18:42:45 <DesertRose>   Because I hadn't yet gotten around to sewing myself any decent garb.
May 07 18:43:02 <kik>   It works, esp. for an early event, before one has had a chande to acquire one's own garb.
May 07 18:43:19 <DesertRose>   It made me look like I was cosplaying as the Virgin Mary, but oh well. :)
May 07 18:43:31 <kik>   chance.  Rented fingers tonight.
May 07 18:43:32 <Evie>   Yes, only "an attempt at garb" is mandatory, and there's a whole LOT of leeway in what constitutes an "attempt"
May 07 18:43:37 <DesertRose>   A very dark-haired version thereof.
May 07 18:43:50 <Evie>   in a pinch, I've even seen a tabard made of two towels pinned together at the shoulders and belted.
May 07 18:43:56 <DesertRose>   Although, the historical Mary probably had hair at least as dark as mine, honestly.
May 07 18:44:08 <DesertRose>   Even though a lot of western iconography shows her as blond.
May 07 18:44:11 <DesertRose>   *blonde
May 07 18:44:58 <Evie>   Yes, I don't imagine there were a lot of naturally blonde women in the first-century Middle East
May 07 18:45:03 <DesertRose>   I believe this was St. George's Faire 2002, which would have made it my second event ever.
May 07 18:45:03 <Jemler>   mary who?
May 07 18:45:04 <Laurna>   I believe is attempting to costume to your first events and learning what the group likes.  I very much dislike people who critise that kind of attempt.
May 07 18:45:16 <DesertRose>   So, yeah, they'd have been cutting me a lot of slack on my garb.
May 07 18:45:21 <kik>   If she'd actually been blonde, I expect it would have been noted scripturally, because it would have been so unusual for that part of the world.
May 07 18:45:25 <DesertRose>   Mother of Jesus, Jemler
May 07 18:45:50 <Shiral>   Much more likely she'd have had dark hair and eyes
May 07 18:46:03 <DesertRose>   Like as not, being a Middle Eastern Jewish lady.
May 07 18:46:09 <Shiral>   Precisely
May 07 18:46:09 <Jemler>   oh. i was distracted for minute. yeah a blond jewish woman on judea. doesn'y really work, does it?
May 07 18:46:16 <DesertRose>   Not really, no.  :D
May 07 18:46:38 <Shiral>   Really hard to find a hair Salon in those days. =o)
May 07 18:46:43 <DesertRose>   LOL, yeah.
May 07 18:46:58 <DesertRose>   And even then, they'd have been likely to use henna, which would have given her hair a reddish cast, not blonde.
May 07 18:47:29 <Shiral>   The closest you'd come to blonde then would be to boil a lot of carnations and dandelions and pour that water over your head.
May 07 18:47:50 <DesertRose>   Yeah, hydrogen peroxide was probably not easily acquired in first century Judea.
May 07 18:48:08 <The_Bee>   I've read there's a reddish hair gene in the jewish genome.
May 07 18:48:21 <DesertRose>   Yes, red-haired Jewish people are not totally unheard-of.
May 07 18:48:52 <DesertRose>   But Mary, mother of Jesus was like as not a dark brunette.
May 07 18:49:36 <Shiral>   Ever since seeing Jesus of Nazareth, I still "See" her as Olivia Hussey
May 07 18:49:40 <DesertRose>   :)
May 07 18:50:21 <DesertRose>   Unfortunate surname for someone to play the Virgin Mother of God.
May 07 18:50:56 <kik>   At least she's a brunette.
May 07 18:51:02 <DesertRose>   Sorry, I'm sleep deprived like WHOA, and my brain is not firing well.
May 07 18:51:40 <The_Bee>   Why would people want her to be a virgin?  What's wrong with the normal way of making a baby?
May 07 18:51:58 <Evie>   I used to look a lot like Olivia Hussey when I was in my 20s, which was a problem when I did my student teaching and assigned the "Romeo and Juliet" movie for extra credit, forgetting there was a nude scene in it.
May 07 18:52:13 <Shiral>   Surprise!
May 07 18:52:15 <DesertRose>   Well, the word that's translated as "virgin" could actually just mean "young woman," not necessarily "woman who has never had sexual intercourse."
May 07 18:52:15 <Jemler>   ever watch Dogma?
May 07 18:52:36 <Evie>   I came back to school on Monday to a group of grinning adolescent boys saying "Did you know that you look a lot like Juliet?  And did you know that movie has a nude scene?"  Oy!
May 07 18:52:41 <kik>   She had to conform to the prophecies, tht said A Virgin shall conceive....
May 07 18:53:09 <Jemler>   most of them do, eventually.
May 07 18:53:15 <DesertRose>   But there's been 2000 years of mythos around the word meaning the latter.
May 07 18:54:17 <DesertRose>   I'm not a big fan of the Catholic concept that Mary remained a virgin (in the "never had sex" definition) her entire life, because that makes no sense.
May 07 18:54:21 <The_Bee>   I doubt if Shakespeare staged many nude scenes, since female characters were played by boys.
May 07 18:54:32 <DesertRose>   IIRC, the Bible mentioned Jesus having at least one brother.
May 07 18:54:45 <DesertRose>   Which would be awfully difficult if Mary and Joseph never danced a horizontal tango.
May 07 18:55:55 <The_Bee>   Some people try to rxplain the brother away as Joseph's son by a previous marriage.
May 07 18:56:17 <DesertRose>   Yeah.
May 07 18:56:33 <DesertRose>   And short of a time machine, none of this can be conclusively proven anyway.
May 07 18:56:34 <Jemler>   you wouldn't like my explanation.
May 07 18:57:45 <Laurna>   Even if you had use of the Tardis would you really want to go into a couples mariage room.   NO I think not
May 07 18:58:12 <The_Bee>   I for one would not be sirprised if jesus himself was married.  Young folks then were expected to marry in their teens, and he was around 30 when he began his ministry.
May 07 18:58:38 <DesertRose>   No, I don't have near that level of prurient curiosity, Laurna!
May 07 18:58:43 <DesertRose>   And me either, Bee.
May 07 18:58:48 <Jemler>   LOL! i just read a series where part of the duty of the best man was to watch the married couples first night!
May 07 18:59:24 <kik>   That sounds likely to me, Bee.  And Rabbis had to be married, too.
May 07 18:59:50 <DesertRose>   It defies social convention of the time and culture that a man of thirty would be unmarried; the Bible doesn't say one way or the other, but honestly, the lack of any mention leads me to believe that he was, because the state of not being married would have been more noteworthy.
May 07 19:00:04 <Jemler>   did you see the video on FB about the bride who lost it during the wedding?
May 07 19:00:35 <DesertRose>   It's like how Orthodox parish priests are expected to be married, the concept being, part of the job is counseling married people/families, and how are you supposed to do that with no direct experience of marriage or family life?
May 07 19:00:52 <Jemler>   ask a priest.
May 07 19:01:09 <DesertRose>   As in a Catholic priest, Jemler?
May 07 19:01:31 <Jemler>   yes. theyu know everything. it's called confession.
May 07 19:01:32 <DesertRose>   There are a number of religions who refer to their clergy as priests.
May 07 19:01:45 <Jemler>   same job.
May 07 19:02:04 <kik>   Orthodox priests can be married when they''re ordained, but can't marry after.  And a married priest can never be a bishop.
May 07 19:02:42 <kik>   Not sure if widowers can be bishops or not.
May 07 19:02:48 <DesertRose>   I'm not Catholic and never have been, so I don't per se have a dog in this fight, but I think the Catholic church's insistence on celibate clergy is ridiculous (partially for the reason listed above re: the Orthodox Christian church), and also because they lose too many good potential priests because of it.
May 07 19:03:31 <DesertRose>   One of my cousins briefly studied for the RC priesthood before deciding he'd rather get married and have a family; if the Church hadn't forced him to choose, I think he'd have made a fantastic priest, so their loss, basically.
May 07 19:03:46 <kik>   One of the practical reasons why not, though, is that the Church couldn't afford to support the wives and children of priests.
May 07 19:03:48 <DesertRose>   (This is the cousin who recently FINALLY popped the question and got officially engaged, BTW.)
May 07 19:04:00 <DesertRose>   They couldn't a few hundred years ago; I don't think that dog hunts now.
May 07 19:04:10 <The_Bee>   When did the Catholics start requiring their priests to be celibate?
May 07 19:04:44 <Evie>   About the time of Pope Gregory, I think.  Before the 1000s.
May 07 19:04:54 <kik>   I think it was in the  Middle Ages.  There were questions of inheritance that made it a practical matter.
May 07 19:04:54 <DesertRose>   Somewhere in the early medieval period, but I don't remember the exact date.
May 07 19:05:02 <Jemler>   when some monk accidently dropped the 'r' in 'celebrate'.
May 07 19:05:08 <Evie>   LOL!
May 07 19:05:16 *   DesertRose smacks Jemler with a mackerel.  A holy mackerel.
May 07 19:05:41 <Jemler>   you went fishing in the lake, right?
May 07 19:05:45 <The_Bee>   Saint Peter must have been married, since his mother-in-law is mentioned in the gospels.
May 07 19:05:47 <DesertRose>   Yup
May 07 19:05:56 <DesertRose>   Not the outhouse.
May 07 19:05:59 *   Laurna trying not to sniker while coughing
May 07 19:06:09 <Jemler>   oh, that's why he went to rome.
May 07 19:06:44 <DesertRose>   Yeah, sort of hard to have a mother-in-law without being married.
May 07 19:07:05 <DesertRose>   I was married without a mother-in-law for a while, though.
May 07 19:08:51 <The_Bee>   hubby's mom dead?
May 07 19:08:54 <DesertRose>   Yup
May 07 19:09:09 <DesertRose>   She had bone cancer (yuk) and passed when he was 16, before he and I ever even met.
May 07 19:09:58 <DesertRose>   His dad remarried while we were married, so for a time I had a stepmother-in-law, but then I left my ex and got divorced and my ex basically dropped off the face of the earth as far as DD and I were concerned (and good riddance).
May 07 19:10:57 <The_Bee>   My mom was 7 when her mother died.
May 07 19:11:00 <DesertRose>   :(
May 07 19:11:58 <DesertRose>   We considered using her middle name (Denise) for some part of DD's name, but the problem with that was we knew a girl named Denise and there were issues that we didn't want it to look like we'd named DD for that girl, so that notion went out the window fairly early in the long wrangling over girl names.
May 07 19:12:17 <The_Bee>   It was the influenza epidemic after WWI
May 07 19:12:35 <DesertRose>   Oh yuk.  That was nasty and did icky things to a lot of people and families.
May 07 19:12:51 <DesertRose>   (Denise was my ex's mother's middle name, just for clarity's sake.)

May 07 19:14:17 <kik>   Ack, I'm being called for supper, so gotta go.  Should be here next week, God willing.
May 07 19:14:18 <DesertRose>   The funny thing about names during my pregnancy with DD was that we settled on a boy's name very quickly with very little arguing, but we went round and round over girls' names.
May 07 19:14:21 <Shiral>   Night, KK
May 07 19:14:23 <DesertRose>   Okay, g'night KK!

"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
