Jan 29 19:05:24 <Jemler>   hi kk
Jan 29 19:05:25 <Evie>   Hi KK
Jan 29 19:05:41 <KK>   Hello, all.
Jan 29 19:05:45 <Eyikl>   hi Everyone
Jan 29 19:05:51 <DesertRose>   I doubt I can still do it (certainly not right now with the Digestive Ick from Hell plaguing me), but I used to be able to eat an entire atomic fireball without having to take it out of my mouth.
Jan 29 19:05:55 <DesertRose>   Hi Eyikl and KK!
Jan 29 19:05:58 *   Evie waves
Jan 29 19:06:05 <DesertRose>   This was around seventh grade.  :)
Jan 29 19:06:13 <Evie>   I love Atomic Fireballs
Jan 29 19:06:19 <KK>   What is an atomic fireball?
Jan 29 19:06:30 <Evie>   A cinnamon jawbreaker candy
Jan 29 19:06:34 <DesertRose>   A red-hot from hell, basically.  A very spicy cinnamon jawbreaker.
Jan 29 19:06:50 <KK>   Yuck!
Jan 29 19:06:59 <Evie>   I love cinnamon candies
Jan 29 19:07:17 <Eyikl>   agreed, KK
Jan 29 19:07:19 <Jemler>   try a lemon jolly rancher! pucker power times 10!
Jan 29 19:07:27 <KK>   Not me.
Jan 29 19:07:30 <Evie>   cinnamon oil toothpicks used to be a thing when I was in elementary school too
Jan 29 19:07:38 <DesertRose>   Yeah, I remember those.
Jan 29 19:07:56 <Evie>   My kids like the very sour candies.  Not me, but I don't mind the red hot cinnamon ones
Jan 29 19:08:02 <Eyikl>   Did you ever just eat plain citamon stick?
Jan 29 19:08:11 <DesertRose>   I don't mind the mildly sour candies, but not the super sour ones.
Jan 29 19:08:27 <Evie>   No, not the actual cinnamon stick

Jan 29 19:08:33 <Jemler>   hi bee
Jan 29 19:08:35 <Evie>   Same, DR
Jan 29 19:08:37 <Evie>   Hi Bee
Jan 29 19:08:38 <Eyikl>   hi Bee
Jan 29 19:08:47 <The_Bee>   Hi everyone
Jan 29 19:08:53 <DesertRose>   Yeah, on one of my early attempts to quit smoking, I used cinnamon sticks as something to put in my mouth and fiddle with in place of cigarettes.
Jan 29 19:08:55 <DesertRose>   Hi Bee!
Jan 29 19:09:52 <The_Bee>   Have you succeeded in quitting yet, DR?
Jan 29 19:09:55 <KK>   I'd think that would definitely be a deterrent, DR.
Jan 29 19:10:15 <Derynifank>   Hi everyone
Jan 29 19:10:26 <DesertRose>   Sort of.  I haven't smoked an actual cigarette in over a year, but I sometimes use a vape pen, so I'm not sure it technically counts as having completely quit.
Jan 29 19:10:52 <KK>   Headed in the right direction.
Jan 29 19:11:09 <Eyikl>   Do those actually have necotine?
Jan 29 19:11:19 <DesertRose>   Well, KK, one's breath smells better when one has been fiddling with a cinnamon stick than when one has been smoking, at least. :D
Jan 29 19:11:42 <DesertRose>   If you put solution containing nicotine in the tank, yes.
Jan 29 19:11:53 <KK>   Very true.
Jan 29 19:11:54 <The_Bee>   There's cinnamon-flavored gum.
Jan 29 19:12:45 <Jemler>   i quit smoking the easy way. i never started.
Jan 29 19:12:49 <DesertRose>   I've found I don't even want to smoke actual cigarettes anymore and the smell has become very off-putting for me, where it didn't used to bother me much.
Jan 29 19:12:57 <DesertRose>   Good on you, Jemler.  A lot easier that way.  :)
Jan 29 19:13:22 <The_Bee>   I took one puff.  That was enough.
Jan 29 19:14:20 <Evie>   I can't stand the smell of cigarette smoke, so I've never found the thought of trying one that appealing.
Jan 29 19:14:30 <DesertRose>   I wish I never had, because the addictive tendencies that seem to run in my family hit that hard, and caffeine.
Jan 29 19:14:43 <KK>   Good on ya, DR!  Back when I was dating, I always felt that kissing a guy who smoked must be sort of like kissing an ashtray.  Yuck!  Never would date a smoker.  That was a deal-breaker from the get-go.
Jan 29 19:14:44 <DesertRose>   And you'll pry my tea from my cold dead fingers, pretty much.  :)
Jan 29 19:15:48 <DesertRose>   I'm not a big coffee drinker; I like it but because I live by myself, it seems like a lot of trouble to make a pot just for myself (and then I have to wash the coffee pot and Evie can testify to my love of doing the dishes---not!).
Jan 29 19:15:57 <Evie>   I very briefly dated a smoker, but yeah, having to hold your breath to kiss someone isn't very conducive to romance.  :-D
Jan 29 19:16:21 <The_Bee>   Mom made a big melodrama of her efforts to quit.  Dad just, they were asking if I was "smoking more now and enjoying it less," and I decided I was, so I qquit.
Jan 29 19:16:39 <DesertRose>   At least I never got addicted to anything illegal.
Jan 29 19:17:02 <KK>   One keeps one's keen sense of smell.  I'm very sensitive to the smell of smoke, and can walk into a room and tell if Scott has been to the cigarr store, even just to have a coke with the guys.
Jan 29 19:17:16 <DesertRose>   Yeah.
Jan 29 19:17:41 <The_Bee>   I make a whole pot of coffee and put it in the fridge.  I mix it with chocolate breakfast drink.
Jan 29 19:17:41 <DesertRose>   My one exception with tobacco smoke is pipe tobacco.
Jan 29 19:17:54 <KK>   And cigarette smoke makes me cough big-time.
Jan 29 19:18:04 <Derynifank>   It's interesting which addictive substances are illegal and which are not
Jan 29 19:18:08 <DesertRose>   Decent quality pipe tobacco smells nice.
Jan 29 19:18:11 <DesertRose>   IMO
Jan 29 19:18:31 <KK>   Smells better in the pouch than it does burning.
Jan 29 19:18:32 <Evie>   Nicotine is extremely addictive, and the habit is very hard to break for some people.  In recovery ministry, if someone is trying to break free from alcohol and/or drug addiction in addition to a nicotine addiction, we don't even try to address the nicotine addiction until after recovery from the other chemical addictions is well underway.
Jan 29 19:18:57 <KK>   Yep.
Jan 29 19:18:59 *   Derynifank has quit (Quit: ajax IRC Client)
Jan 29 19:19:11 <DesertRose>   I've gotten to where cigarette and most cigar smoke is off-putting to me (I've smelled some high-end cigars being smoked that smelled more like pipe tobacco to me).
Jan 29 19:19:19 <Jemler>   mibbit strijes again!
Jan 29 19:19:30 <Jemler>   mibbit strikes again!
Jan 29 19:19:33 <DesertRose>   It is, Evie.

Jan 29 19:19:48 <DesertRose>   I've heard people who've kicked heroin who said that kicking nicotine was harder.
Jan 29 19:19:57 <Evie>   I was just about to say that
Jan 29 19:20:11 <The_Bee>   wb, DF
Jan 29 19:20:17 <DesertRose>   Like, quite a few recovered heroin addicts.
Jan 29 19:20:20 <Jemler>   wb df
Jan 29 19:20:21 <DesertRose>   Rehi, derynifank
Jan 29 19:20:50 <Jemler>   kk, i started reading that president's vampire. it's pretty good so far.
Jan 29 19:21:17 <Eyikl>   Yeah, DerynifanK. Marajuna has fewer second-hand effect, but yyet it's the illegal one
Jan 29 19:21:23 <KK>   Glad you're enjoying it, Jemler.  I need to order the next book in the series.
Jan 29 19:21:35 <Jemler>   i bought all 4
Jan 29 19:22:20 <The_Bee>   Which is the first?
Jan 29 19:22:35 <derynifank>   Rehi
Jan 29 19:22:42 <Jemler>   blood oath
Jan 29 19:22:55 <The_Bee>   thanks, jeler
Jan 29 19:23:03 <The_Bee>   jemler too
Jan 29 19:23:32 <DesertRose>   BRB
Jan 29 19:23:51 <Evie>   Oh, KK, I was at a newcomers-themed SCA event last night enjoying feast with DD and 4 of her friends who had never been to an event.  We got to talking about various SF/Fantasy authors who were members of the SCA at one time, and I mentioned you. One of DD's friends recognized your name as someone whose books he'd read.
Jan 29 19:24:11 <KK>   I read The President's Vampire first, and liked it better than Blood Oath.
Jan 29 19:24:13 <Evie>   He couldn't remember which titles off the top of his head, but he said he'd read a few.
Jan 29 19:25:09 <KK>   Poul Anderson and Diana Studebaker both were in the SCA in the early days.
Jan 29 19:26:05 <The_Bee>   I don't know Diana Studebaker. What's she written?
Jan 29 19:26:14 <derynifank>   Any chance of publishing fanfic in Adobe format for download?
Jan 29 19:26:34 <Evie>   I mentioned Marion Zimmer Bradley and Poul Anderson first, and got blank looks.  Young'uns.  :-D
Jan 29 19:26:48 <KK>   Did some stuff with MB, and later some of her own, mostly set in early British and Arthurian time periods.
Jan 29 19:27:38 <The_Bee>   MZB was aan excellent editor as well.  Her anthologiers were very good.
Jan 29 19:28:10 <Evie>   (To be honest, my first attempt to read MZB was also my last attempt, and I only made it halfway through the book. But at least I tried her work and recognize her name as a well-known fantasy author. :-D)
Jan 29 19:28:36 *   Eyikl has quit (Quit: ajax IRC Client)
Jan 29 19:29:05 <KK>   MZB was never as active in SCA; got caught up in feminist themes and independent catholic stuff.  I thought Mists of Avalon was good but very over-written.
Jan 29 19:29:50 <The_Bee>   Wrengl one said she sensed something very dark about MZB.  I thought of that when I read something about her or her  husband's alleged dark side.

Jan 29 19:30:09 <The_Bee>   hi Eyiki
Jan 29 19:30:19 <KK>   Wrengl had the right of it.  She was a very wise lady.
Jan 29 19:30:27 <KK>   Wrengl, that is.
Jan 29 19:30:32 <Evie>   Mists of Avalon was one of the few books I ever ended up throwing at a wall, along with The Crystal Star by Vonda McIntyre.  And John Steinbeck's Arthurian tales, but in that case it wasn't because I hated them, but because he died before he finished the cycle and left me hanging, and the publisher went ahead and published the incomplete book anyway.
Jan 29 19:31:46 <Evie>   So maybe I should have thrown that last one at the publisher instead. :-D
Jan 29 19:31:53 <KK>   I'm with you on Mists, Evie.  Was never a fan of McIntyre.
Jan 29 19:31:58 <The_Bee>   Thaata's annoying.  I reaad some unfinished Tolkien stories.  I hated being left hanging.
Jan 29 19:33:13 <The_Bee>   I'm currently working on one of Mercedes Lackey's 500 Kingdoms books.
Jan 29 19:33:18 <Evie>   There was another one by McIntyre that I liked well enough, so I went into The Crystal Star (which was a Star Wars novel) figuring it would at least be a decent read, if not great literature.  But it was awful.
Jan 29 19:33:40 <DesertRose>   Okay
Jan 29 19:33:41 <derynifank>   I loved Mary Stewart's Arthurian series
Jan 29 19:33:42 <DesertRose>   back
Jan 29 19:34:38 <DesertRose>   Yeah, at least with the last Laura Ingalls Wilder book, the book was complete, just unedited.
Jan 29 19:34:49 <The_Bee>   Stewart's Arthurian tales were good, but I prefered hermodern Gothic novels.
Jan 29 19:35:34 <derynifank>   I liked them too
Jan 29 19:36:00 <DesertRose>   But evidently the publishers decided to publish the unedited manuscript since the editing process (which involved a good bit of back-and-forth with the author) couldn't be done since the manuscript was found among her things after her death.
Jan 29 19:36:04 <KK>   Right now, I'm reading a book called Eighty Days, about a race around the world in the lage 1880's by two young female newspaper writers starting off from NTC in opposite directions, to see if going around the world in less than 80 days could be done, a la Jules Verne.  The guy is an excellent writer, with grat descriptions.
Jan 29 19:36:10 <Evie>   I love strong female characters, but the ones in TCS were only "strong" because the male characters were all turned into weak idiots who had to be rescued by the Strong Kickass Women.  I adored Leia because she was strong, but I also adored Luke and Han because they were strong as well, so I found it very insulting to men.
Jan 29 19:36:52 <Evie>   Oh, that sounds fun!
Jan 29 19:37:39 <Evie>   I had to read the Verne book in 7th grade, along with a bunch of other required reading books that, looking back, I now realized were something like 80% science fiction or fantasy works, which probably helped shape my reading tastes in later life.
Jan 29 19:37:43 <DesertRose>   Yeah, I do get irritated sometimes that men characters are allowed to be flawed but still likeable in ways that women characters are often not, but don't turn all the guys into useless dipsticks please.

Jan 29 19:38:22 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Hello all. Sorry I'm late.
Jan 29 19:38:22 <Evie>   Hi BTE
Jan 29 19:38:22 <Eyikl>   Hi BTE
Jan 29 19:38:26 <KK>   Hi, BTE.
Jan 29 19:38:45 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Had to work a few hours today.
Jan 29 19:38:48 <derynifank>   Hi BTE
Jan 29 19:38:52 <The_Bee>   I'm trying to remember who wrote the Amelia Peabody series of novels.
Jan 29 19:38:57 <DesertRose>   No worries, glad you're here.
Jan 29 19:39:06 <Jemler>   hi bte
Jan 29 19:39:10 <Evie>   I can't remember right now either, Bee, but those were fun
Jan 29 19:39:37 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Have I missed much?
Jan 29 19:39:45 <derynifank>   Elizabeth Peters wrote AP books
Jan 29 19:39:47 <DesertRose>   We've been rambling, to be honest.
Jan 29 19:39:57 <Evie>   Elizabeth Peters
Jan 29 19:40:02 <The_Bee>   My sister likes those.  My favorite of hewr characters is Jacquelin Kirby
Jan 29 19:40:08 <Eyikl>   A conversation on smoking. Not rea)y.
Jan 29 19:40:23 <DesertRose>   That stemmed from cinnamon... :)
Jan 29 19:40:29 <Evie>   Yes, smoking, addictive tendencies, and books.
Jan 29 19:40:39 <Evie>   Books being my primary addiction.  ;-)
Jan 29 19:41:03 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Not a bad thing, IMHO
Jan 29 19:41:04 <DesertRose>   Wow, someone with an English degree addicted to books... who'd'a thunk?  :P
Jan 29 19:41:15 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Yeah, same here.
Jan 29 19:41:25 <DesertRose>   Me too, which is why I'm teasing Evie.  :0
Jan 29 19:41:26 <DesertRose>   :)
Jan 29 19:41:29 <Evie>   I gave in to the text side of the Force
Jan 29 19:41:39 <Evie>   It's both dark and light
Jan 29 19:41:41 <DesertRose>   I'm on the dork side.  :)
Jan 29 19:41:45 <Evie>   LOL!
Jan 29 19:42:04 <Eyikl>   Do they have pi (e)?
Jan 29 19:42:08 <Jemler>   good question: exactly what do you do with a Phd in English Literature?
Jan 29 19:42:09 <BalanceTheEnergies>   I have a couple of John McWhorter's books upstairs, and i asked my library to buy his new ones.
Jan 29 19:42:15 <DesertRose>   So is my cat, who got aggravated at me when I evicted her from my desk chair and set her in my recliner.
Jan 29 19:42:23 <Evie>   Noooooooo, pi is maths!  Run away, run away!  ;-)
Jan 29 19:42:39 <DesertRose>   She attempted to pounce on my hand as I walked away, and promptly busted her butt.
Jan 29 19:42:52 <DesertRose>   I am a bad kitteh-mama because I laughed at her.
Jan 29 19:42:57 <DesertRose>   Pie is good. Pi, eh.
Jan 29 19:43:21 <DesertRose>   I recognize the usefulness of pi, but don't make me fiddle with it.
Jan 29 19:43:30 <Evie>   No, you need a bow for that
Jan 29 19:43:58 <DesertRose>   Don't make me fiddle with a fiddle either.  My nails are too long and I'll catch strings I don't mean to.  :)
Jan 29 19:44:30 <The_Bee>   Carys probably laughs at you, DR
Jan 29 19:44:41 <Evie>   My grandmother used to play the fiddle. She tried to teach me, but I only learned how to play "Amazing Grace," and I made it sound more like Lawd Have Mercy!
Jan 29 19:44:54 <DesertRose>   With a PhD in English literature, you probably teach university-level English and write a lot of obscure papers for literary journals.
Jan 29 19:44:56 <Jemler>   until he finds out his brother is in the strings!
Jan 29 19:45:07 <Evie>   We did a recording of us playing a duet, and there was copious giggling throughout
Jan 29 19:45:15 <DesertRose>   With a BA, you sing goofy songs on somewhat obscene Broadway musicals.  :)
Jan 29 19:45:38 <DesertRose>   Probably, Bee.
Jan 29 19:45:39 <BalanceTheEnergies>   I have a BA and I work at a parking garage.
Jan 29 19:46:09 <DesertRose>   I snapped a photo of her last week that completely accidentally captured her with an epic side-eye/"I am SO over the crap!" facial expression.
Jan 29 19:46:39 <KK>   Back when I did a stint playing violin, I only got as far as Mary Had a Little Lamb, and made horrible faces at the horrible sounds I produced.
Jan 29 19:46:58 <The_Bee>   Is the photo on-line, DR?
Jan 29 19:47:11 <BalanceTheEnergies>   I've also worked in casinos and drove city buses for a while. Perhaps that's one reason i like to watch a certain Canadian lumberjack-turned-detective. :D
Jan 29 19:47:14 <DesertRose>
Jan 29 19:47:16 <KK>   That was in 6th grade.
Jan 29 19:47:36 <Evie>   DS used to make cringe-worthy sounds on his various instruments, but I do have to say he's gotten a lot better over the years with constant practice.
Jan 29 19:47:36 <The_Bee>   I still play the flute, but I never practiced enough to be really good.
Jan 29 19:47:54 <KK>   Cute, DR.
Jan 29 19:47:56 <derynifank>   I have to go now. Night everyone

Jan 29 19:48:25 <Eyikl>   Goodnight Derynifank
Jan 29 19:48:33 <Evie>   I play the recorder.  The cassette recorder.
Jan 29 19:48:47 <KK>   I never wanted to practice.  I decided that I'd rather play the tape recorder than an instrument.  My dad and sister got the musician genea.
Jan 29 19:48:52 <KK>   genes.
Jan 29 19:48:56 <Evie>   it's a vanishing skill, playing the cassette recorder. A lot of youngsters don't even know what one is!
Jan 29 19:49:08 <DesertRose>   I didn't even see her facial expression when I snapped that picture because at the time of day when I took it, I was dealing with some pretty serious sun glare through the window, so I didn't see her expression until I pulled up the photo-editing software.
Jan 29 19:49:16 <DesertRose>   True that, Evie!
Jan 29 19:49:33 <Evie>   My kids used to ask me to play "Those giant black CDs"
Jan 29 19:49:35 <KK>   Lots of skills are being lost to technology, Evie.
Jan 29 19:49:55 <The_Bee>   I asked for--and got-- a musical keyboard for Christmas.  It's so big I'm afraid to take it out of the box.
Jan 29 19:50:09 <Evie>   Hard to play it in the box, though!
Jan 29 19:50:09 <Jemler>   my sisters kids saw an LP, and called it a big CD!
Jan 29 19:50:55 <BalanceTheEnergies>   I train cashiers, and we use a magnetic stripe ticket system, and most of them don't know how that tech works.
Jan 29 19:51:18 <The_Bee>   Quite a few people like the old-fashioned vinyl records
Jan 29 19:51:38 <Evie>   Times have changed quite a bit since our childhoods.  I would never have dreamed of having instant group conversations with people all over the world every Sunday.  At best I might have imagined it as some sort of a group telephone call
Jan 29 19:51:44 <KK>   It's a different sound.
Jan 29 19:51:55 <Eyikl>   LPs looks like Eliose's sunhat in the first book about her.
Jan 29 19:52:21 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Yes, 'be heard people say vinyl sounds "warmer".
Jan 29 19:52:28 <Evie>   I still have my vinyl record collection and turntable.
Jan 29 19:52:37 <BalanceTheEnergies>   Oops.* I've

Jan 29 19:54:31 <Evie>   LOL, yeah!
Jan 29 19:54:35 <KK>   True, DR.

Jan 29 19:55:30 <DesertRose>   Not that I ever danced too vigorously and caused a record to skip.
Jan 29 19:55:31 <Evie>   Might be easier to find a source for them online
Jan 29 19:55:36 <KK>   Probably eeasier to find them on the internet, these days, though.
Jan 29 19:55:42 *   DesertRose polishes her halo and re-sets it on top of her horns.
Jan 29 19:55:46 <The_Bee>   My turntable died, and I gave away my records.
Jan 29 19:56:10 <BalanceTheEnergies>   I think that's what she's done.
Jan 29 19:56:15 <KK>   I was never into dancing so vigorously that the needle skipped.  Not my kind of music, or dance.
Jan 29 19:56:57 <DesertRose>   Well, when I was a kid, my biological father was into Motown and current R&B/soul (this was the mid 1980's), so that was some fairly uptempo music.
Jan 29 19:57:17 <DesertRose>   Keep in mind, I was about 10 years old too.
Jan 29 19:57:19 <The_Bee>   My sister and I used to spin around in circles to the Russian Dance from theNutcracker suite.
Jan 29 19:57:50 <KK>   EEEk, gotta dash.  Mercy Street is about to start.  Excellent civil war drama on PBS, followed by Victoria and then by an excellent series on Henry VIII's wives--new.
Jan 29 19:58:02 <DesertRose>   Ten-year-old children are not always the most moderate in their behavior.
Jan 29 19:58:10 <Jemler>   nite kk

Jan 29 19:58:37 <Jemler>   super bowl next week.
Jan 29 19:58:47 *   KK steps onto her Portal and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.  And yes, early chat next week!
Jan 29 19:58:48 <DesertRose>   Oh, embuggerance.
Jan 29 19:58:53 <DesertRose>   That ridiculous game.
Jan 29 19:58:58 <Evie>   All the more reason for coming to chat, jemler. ;-)
Jan 29 19:59:09 <DesertRose>   Okay, see you next week, KK!  Have a good week!
Jan 29 19:59:15 <KK>   Nighters, all.
Jan 29 19:59:17 <Jemler>   i could win $1000!
Jan 29 19:59:21 <Evie>   Goodnight!
Jan 29 19:59:31 *   KK has quit (Quit: CGI:IRC (EOF))
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
