Hurricane Matthew
« on: October 06, 2016, 10:02:46 am »
Hurricane Matthew has already wreaked death and destruction on various Caribbean islands and is now headed for Florida and much of the rest of the southeastern US coast.

I am okay; Carys-kitteh and I are at my parents' house which is on relatively high ground and my parents and I have been through a Category 4 hurricane before (Hugo, Charleston, SC, 1989), so while it won't be fun (at least not by my definition, maybe by Jim Cantore's!  ;) ), we should be okay.

Please keep those affected and in the path of this storm in your prayers/good thoughts/etc.

Thanks.

~DR

Good to hear that you and Carys-kitteh are with family, I do hope your DD is there too, or safe some where else.  Hurricane winds and rain can be kind of frightening. I've experienced Topical Storms when I was in Florida, decades ago, that was enough for me. Can not imagine a hurricane.
Stay safe!

DD lives at my parents' house, so yes, she's here too.  :)

Glad you, Carys-kitteh and DD have safe shelter.  Check in when you can to let us know all is well.

IIRC, DF64 is in Orlando, so hopefully all is well with him as well.

I got an email this morning from DF64; he and his are fine and haven't even lost power.  :)

We haven't lost power yet but there are still several hours to go before the storm fully passes over us.

Yes, I and my dad and my sister and brother-in-law and his mom are all doing well!!  Only had one flicker of power so far.  So other than not having to go to work today, the day is going well and hope that everyone here in Florida remains safe from Matthew.

Happy to report my Dad in Melbourne made it through OK. Had a caregiver staying with him just to be on the safe side. :)

Glad to hear he is ok. Anxious times.

All is well here in Orlando.  It's nice and sunny today and 84 degrees.  Never lost power at all.  My sister got her power back this morning and is doing well.  Matthew has landed in South Carolina.  May they all be safe.

Here in Jacksonville (northeastern Florida), at least at my parents' house, we lost power for about eight hours.  It went out around 2 pm on Friday and came back on around 10 pm, which was not long enough for any refrigerated/frozen food to spoil since we kept the relevant appliances closed.  It got a little warm in the house with no a/c for that long, but nothing too ridiculous and it cooled back down pretty quickly once the power was restored.

This morning, it's been sunny and quite nice.  My parents are removing the boards from the windows, and their property seems to have taken very little damage (a few downed branches that are actually still attached but dangling precariously, but I guess my stepdad's obsessive tree-trimming paid off!).  I drove to the supermarket a little while ago (Publix, for my fellow Floridians/southeasterners  ;) ) and the roads were reasonably clear (some leaves and pine needles but nothing obstructing the roads), and the store needed a little restocking of some things, but basically, I think things will be back to normal fairly soon.

The biggest problem I can see is that the mobile phone carrier my family uses (we're all four on the same family plan) is experiencing an outage (probably lost a tower or several) and thus I don't want to go back to my house until service is restored since, unlike my parents/daughter, I don't have a landline.

So we're okay up here.  :)
