KK Chat - Apr. 8, 2001

[16:27] *** KK has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[16:27] *** ChanServ sets mode: +o KK
[16:27] <Bynw> Hiyas KK!
[16:27] <KK> Ho-ho!  The crowd grows every week!  Hello, all!
[16:27] <Shiral> Hi Katherine. <G>
[16:27] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Hi, Katherine... :)
[16:27] <Shiral> You're early!
[16:27] <Rebecca> Hi Katherine!
[16:27] <AEves_Spirit> Hello Katherine
[16:27] <hygilac> Hi Katherine
[16:28] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Just discussing the best ticket prices to get to Darkover... :)
[16:28] <KK> It's right after ER; I'm right on time!
[16:28] <Shiral> We're glad to see you at ANY time of day, of course. <G>
[16:28] <KK> So, who's the best?
[16:28] <AEves_Spirit> Would you ever have a character that resembles Luca, Katherine?
[16:28] <Rebecca> Well the worst is American, right Raymond?
[16:29] <hygilac> depends where you are coming from
[16:29] <Wrengl>  6 Hi Katherine
[16:29] <KK> Well, he looks a lot like I picture Matyas.
[16:29] * AEves_Spirit *sighs*
[16:29] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Yes...American is nearly 4x the price I'm shooting for.
[16:30] <Jessie> Katherine -- a fan by the name of Kelric (who couldn't be here today because of work) wanted me to ask if there is any possibility of getting a more complete list of the members of the Camberian Council (for some fanfic he is writing)
[16:30] <hygilac> Which airline do you normally come over on, Katherine?
[16:30] <KK> I had incredibly bad luck with Delta last summer, though it was cheap.
[16:30] <KK> Camberian Council when?
[16:30] <Jessie> through the ages :)
[16:30] <Shiral> I had bad luck with Delta getting home from Darkover. DOLTA airlines is more like it!
[16:31] <KK> Well, that would write me into a corner, wouldn't it? :-)
[16:31] <KK> I usually fly BA or Aer Lingus; but I'm flying Continental next month.
[16:31] <Shiral> She might end up with all sorts of people in the Council that she didn't want.<G>
[16:31] <Rebecca> Was it two or three :)
[16:31] <hygilac> I didn't have the best of times getting to Europe on American last summer
[16:31] <Bynw> Delta is about my only option in Hotlanta
[16:32] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Hmmm....then it's possible (but not likely) that we'd be on the same flight, Chris.
[16:32] <Rebecca> Aer Lingus now has direct flights into BWI.
[16:32] <Shiral> Two.  But I had two  flights cancelled out from under me in 24 hours. And I had to spend six hours in Dallas Airport which is about five hours too many.
[16:32] <KK> Well, Delta is great in the air, but on the ground, they're dire!
[16:32] * Shiral nods and laughs her head off about Delta
[16:33] <Rebecca> It might be better for Chris and Raymond to drive then. Flying Delta may cause them to miss Darkover
[16:33] <hygilac> Did Scott make it home safely from India, Katherine?
[16:33] <Kelos_al-Hazar> OK...so it looks like I'm looking for Southwest Air, then.
[16:33] <Shiral> But they DID get me TO Darkover in a timely way. <G>
[16:33] <KK> Continental now flies direct from Dublin to Newark.
[16:34] <Rebecca> New Jersey or Delaware?
[16:34] <Wrengl> NJ has the International airport
[16:34] <Shiral> I would have sold my soul for a transfer portal!
[16:34] <KK> I'll be going Dublin-Newark-LA, and then SFO-Newark-Dublin, for just over $500.
[16:35] <Shiral> Not bad!
[16:35] <KK> Newark, NJ.
[16:35] <Rebecca> WOW! Great prices
[16:35] <Bynw> that's not bad at all
[16:35] <Wrengl>  That is a great price!
[16:35] <Shiral> Pretty darn terrific, yes
[16:35] <hygilac> yes, excellent!
[16:35] <KK> Yeah, I thought so.  Going to a wedding in NY, then out to the West Coast for a week or so.
[16:36] <hygilac> considering the prices my friend has been quoted for a London round trip
[16:36] * Shiral does a little happy jig...
[16:36] <Kelos_al-Hazar> That's the odd thing...prices from Europe to the US are lower than vice-versa...
[16:36] <KK> You're coming into summer prices, which are always much higher tran-Atlantic.
[16:36] <hygilac> true
[16:37] <hygilac> Did Scoot make it home?
[16:37] <AEves_Spirit> When is Darkover?
[16:37] <Shiral> Did he SCOOT home? <G>
[16:37] <KK> Oh, yes, Scott made it home.  Tomorrow's our anniversary.
[16:37] <Rebecca> November
[16:37] <KK> Yes, he scooted.
[16:37] <Rebecca> happy anniversary!
[16:37] <Wrengl>  Happy anniversary
[16:37] <Kelos_al-Hazar> KK, it's quite usual for Europeans to get tickets for as much as 50% less than we Americans, for basically the same flight, tho!
[16:37] <hygilac> How many years?
[16:37] <Shiral> Congratulations one day ahead, Katherine!
[16:37] <KK> Thankee!
[16:37] <AEves_Spirit> Happy anniversary to you both
[16:38] <KK> Hard to believe it's been 18 years.  Seems like yesterday and forever.
[16:38] * Shiral pops the cork on a bottle of vintage French Champagne in honor of the occasion
[16:38] * Wrengl Thumper gives Katherine a pigs ear as an early anniversary present
[16:38] <KK> Thank you to Thumper!
[16:38] <hygilac> Happy anniversary!
[16:38] <Bynw> Happy Early Anniv then Katherine and Scott :-)
[16:39] * Kelos_al-Hazar grins
[16:39] * Shiral hands Katherine a Waterford crystal champagne flute. Here's to another great year for you both!
[16:39] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Well done! Eighteen years is excellent in today's uncertain times.
[16:39] <KK> It will soon be Bynw & Tika's turn.
[16:39] <Bynw> yup
[16:39] <hygilac> just look at that grin!
[16:40] <Shiral> I can practically HEAR that grin all the way in California. <G>
[16:40] <Bynw> LOL
[16:40] <Wrengl>  Bynw looks like he just had a saucer of fresh cream
[16:40] <Kelos_al-Hazar> LLOL!
[16:41] <Shiral> Digital imaging...Getting more sophisticated all the time. <G>
[16:41] <KK> And who is cYz?
[16:41] <hygilac> cYz is in Berlin
[16:41] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I pinged the whole channel instead. :mutters:
[16:41] * cYz is a spectator from germany :)
[16:42] <KK> (I have to ID the new handles I've not seen before.)  Berlin?!!
[16:42] <cYz> yeah Berlin the capital of Germany
[16:42] <Shiral> Up VERY late at night....<G>
[16:42] <KK> Well, I'd assumed that, being in Dublin myself.  We trans-Atlantic types tend to think in more global terms than UStacians.
[16:42] <hygilac> yeah but he is something of a night owl
[16:43] <Shiral> So am I by choice. <G>
[16:43] <Shiral> Pretty useless before noon, though
[16:43] <Wrengl> He's often here MUCH later than this
[16:43] <Shiral> Very true
[16:43] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Not all Americans are US-centric... Heh.
[16:43] <cYz> night owl hehe :) rather a night hawk *grin*
[16:43] <KK> Yeah, it would be coming up on midnight in Berlin.
[16:44] <KK> Not all Americans, and especially not in this room; but the US of A <is> the biggest.
[16:45] <AEves_Spirit> Should I introduce myself too, Katherine?  <g>
[16:45] <KK> Yes, please.
[16:45] <AEves_Spirit> My name is Sianne and I am from Birmingham, UK
[16:45] <KK> Another one of you on this side of the pond.  Cool!
[16:45] <AEves_Spirit> thank you :)
[16:45] <KK> And this would be different from the Sianny I know.
[16:46] * cYz still didnt succeed in getting the first book of the deryni in german from amazon.de :(
[16:46] <AEves_Spirit> Yes - I have been in touch with Sianny re. the similarity in our names
[16:46] <KK> I have German copies, cYz.  Would you like one?  I have <lots>!
[16:46] <Rebecca> Yes, katherine.  The Sianny you know is in Virginia. :)
[16:46] <Shiral> And is expecting yet another Kelson for the Deryni named Kids page. <G>
[16:47] <KK> Sianne, is your name pronounced like Sianny's?
[16:47] * cYz wonders how authors ever earn money if they give their copies away for free :)
[16:47] <KK> Well, you could send me some money, at least for the postage.
[16:47] *** kitarak has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[16:47] <AEves_Spirit> I believe it should strictly be pronounced "shawn-ye" (there is an accent over the a)
[16:47] <KK> I was about to donate a bunch of German copies to the local German school.
[16:47] <AEves_Spirit> but most people call me "sharn"
[16:48] <hygilac> David's on your side of the pond, too, KK
[16:48] <cYz> how do i send you money ... via snailmail? :)
[16:48] <KK> David would be....?
[16:48] <AEves_Spirit> hi kitarak - nice to meet you :)
[16:48] <hygilac> Aeves is in Birmingham, David
[16:49] <Kelos_al-Hazar> That's Birmingham, UK...Heh.
[16:49] <KK> Snail Mail is fine.
[16:49] <AEves_Spirit> lol
[16:49] <hygilac> David for whom you have signed copies of various books at Darkover, Katherine
[16:49] <KK> Snails should go to: Holybrooke Hall, Bray, Co. Wicklow, Ireland.  And send me your address, cYz.
[16:49] <cYz> KK i dont want you to make you any work, drag you away from writing more books for your fans :)
[16:49] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Well, there is a Birmingham, AL USA.... and I live 50 miles S of it...:-D
[16:50] <cYz> KK is this the complete address?  No numbers in it at all?
[16:50] <KK> Hafta have your address to send you a book, don't I?
[16:50] <AEves_Spirit> Keep meaning to visit, Kelos - never got there yet tho.
[16:50] <Shiral> She  does have to get up to eat and sleep sometimes though,cYz
[16:50] *** Guest37733 is now known as cjws
[16:50] <KK> No numbers.  We're too small for postal codes, and the house has been here for nearly 200 years, so the postal authorities definitely know where we are.
[16:50] <cYz> KK and how much money and in which currency do you need?
[16:51] <Shiral> Have you had a good writing week, Katherine
[16:51] <Rebecca> Hi Carolyn.  How's the kitty?
[16:51] <Shiral> Hi Carolyn!
[16:51] <kitarak> Hi carolyn
[16:51] <cjws> not good
[16:51] <Shiral> =o(
[16:51] <Shiral> Poor Graykin.
[16:51] <cjws> weak but still here
[16:51] <hygilac> oh, no
[16:51] <Shiral> What's the trouble
[16:51] <KK> Dollars are always good; are you US military?  Or Euros will work, I think.
[16:51] <KK> Hi, carolyn.
[16:51] <cjws> we think it's stomach cancer
[16:51] <Wrengl> Hi carolyn.  You made it!
[16:51] <cjws> hi kk
[16:51] <Wrengl> How is the kitty doing?
[16:51] <Shiral> Oooh, poor cat.
[16:51] <cYz> KK there arent any printed euros so far
[16:52] <KK> But I think you can write a cheque in euros.
[16:52] <cYz> as far as i know :)
[16:52] * cYz is a student and doesnt have cheques cause his bank account is one for students :(
[16:52] <AEves_Spirit> Oh Carolyn - that's so sad.  Sorry to hear about your cat :(
[16:52] <KK> Stomach cancer?  One of your kitties?  Oh, no!
[16:52] <Bynw> poor kitty :(
[16:53] <cjws> she's older than my kid
[16:53] <hygilac> oh, dear
[16:53] <Shiral> And poor you.  I hope Socks is still okay?
[16:53] <cjws> he's fime
[16:53] <Wrengl> Still it is hard watching them go to the Rainbow Bridge
[16:53] <cjws> fine
[16:53] <cjws> enough of the cats
[16:53] <cjws> onto topic
[16:53] <KK> Then, at least the poor thing has had good innings.  Is he in pain?
[16:53] <cjws> what's up?
[16:53] <hygilac> okay--I know that feeling
[16:53] <cjws> she's not in any pain
[16:54] <hygilac> Katherine is being generous again
[16:54] <Shiral> We haven't talked too much about Deryni matters yet. <G>
[16:54] <cjws> awk speakin scot today
[16:54] <KK> That's good.  You'll know when it's time to let her go.
[16:54] <cYz> KK how much $ do you need for postage? you cant read german I guess? :)
[16:54] <KK> One last thing for cYz--what currency do you handle?
[16:54] <KK> I can read German, but slowly.
[16:54] <cYz> DM / Deutsche Mark so far :)
[16:54] <Kelos_al-Hazar> BRB...
[16:55] *** Guest33367 is now known as the_Bee
[16:55] <Shiral> Tomorrow is Katherine's and Scot's anniversary, Carolyn
[16:55] <cYz> KK hehe i will put in a german story so if you find the time try and read it, i won the german goethe-youth-literature contest in 1999 with it *lookingproud*
[16:55] <cjws> wow
[16:55] <Wrengl>  We're only missing leslie of the regulars, I think
[16:56] <KK> cYz, just send me the equivalent of about $10.00 in DM; that'll cover postage and a bit at this end.
[16:56] <Shiral> Sharon said she'd try to be here today too
[16:56] <cYz> okay no problem
[16:56] <cjws> how many years kk?
[16:56] <KK> Are you German, cYz, or just studying there?
[16:56] <cYz> i have $10 i bet ...
[16:56] <cYz> KK, I am german
[16:56] <the_Bee> Happy anniversary, Katherine :-)
[16:56] <cYz> Living here since my very birth :)
[16:56] <cYz> Well no thats wrong, but i have been born here and since i go to school i live in germany
[16:57] <Rebecca> Katherine, you use Word, correct?  I need to know which version so I can send you the typos list.
[16:57] <KK> Cool.  One of these days, I've got to get back to Germany. It's been too long.  I took 2 years of German in college.
[16:57] <KK> Word, yes, Rebecca.  And thank you!
[16:57] <Shiral> I took just one year of German.  The grammar defeated me. <G>
[16:57] <Wrengl> So did I but I remember almost none of it.
[16:57] <KK> My French is much better.
[16:58] <Shiral> I got up to three years of French in High School.  But I haven't used it in ages
[16:58] <hygilac> French (non) pronunciation defeated me
[16:58] <AEves_Spirit> could never work out my nominative from my accusatives <g>
[16:58] <KK> Took my graduate school language exams in French--but it's been a while.  But I wouldn't starve or be too lost.
[16:58] <Shiral> I had great grandparents from Canada who spoke no English
[16:58] <cYz> KK maybe you should come to germany when you publish a new book and present it on one of the 2 big book-exhibitions here
[16:58] <Rebecca> I read scholarly french very well and struggle through scholarly german.  But then I understand that even Germans struggle through scholarly german :)
[16:59] <KK> Incidentally, Margaret, my mother, is in France now, on her Smithsonian tour.  Got there Friday, I think.
[16:59] <Shiral> Is there an equivalent Germany anywhere in the Deryni universe, Katherine?
[16:59] <cYz> your name sounds quite german KK :-)
[16:59] <Wrengl> Foreign languages in general have always defeated me.
[16:59] <Rebecca> My conversational skills in both languages are very rusty
[16:59] <Jessie> aren't the Graf's german?
[16:59] <cjws> oh boy...lbm in paris!
[16:59] <KK> Actually, I attended a convention in Germany a few years ago; I'd forgotten about that.
[16:59] <Shiral> If I HAD to make myself understood in French, I could probably manage
[17:00] <Shiral> Lucky  LBM!
[17:00] <KK> Actually, she moves on to Cabourg tomorrow.
[17:00] <cjws> what fun
[17:00] <KK> But some of you wanted to ask questions....
[17:01] <AEves_Spirit> Some of the city names in Torenth *sound* a bit germanic, Shiral, such as Komnene?
[17:01] <Bynw> LOL we get to chatting and forget all about them
[17:01] <Shiral> Is there an analogous Germany anywhere in the Deryni world, Katherine?
[17:01] <Shiral> And a river too. I wonder if Matyas makes "Rhein Wines?"
[17:02] <KK> There's some Germanic influence; but actually, I was aiming for more of a Slavic flavor, inspired by our travels in Romania a few years ago.
[17:02] <Shiral> Rhine wines rather
[17:02] <Jessie> is there a tentative schedule for the childe morgan books yet (i.e. one a year etc?)
[17:02] <the_Bee> What's east of Torenth?  Land or sea?
[17:02] <AEves_Spirit> Such as the Lazslo references, Katherine?
[17:02] <Shiral> In Torenth, certainly there's a lot of Slavic influence
[17:02] <KK> First Childe Morgan is supposed to be done the end of the summer, but it ain't gonna happen.  It will be late.
[17:02] <Bynw> both are correct spellings Shiral
[17:03] <Shiral> I was being thorough, Chris. <G>
[17:03] <KK> One a year is the frequency, though, in theory.
[17:03] <KK> More land east of Torenth.  That's basically Asia out there.
[17:03] <the_Bee> I've always wondered.  Are the Eleven Kingdoms on an island?
[17:04] <Rebecca> Where exactly is Byzantyun in respect to Torenth?
[17:04] <KK> No, they're the western edge of a continent.
[17:04] <KK> I filled in the English Channel, among other things.  Byzantyn is east.
[17:05] <Shiral> WAY East.
[17:05] <KK> Yes, waaaay east.
[17:05] <the_Bee> closer than in our world?
[17:05] <KK> I think there's a Mediterranean out there somewhere, too.
[17:05] <KK> No, 'bout the same.
[17:05] <Wrengl> part of Asia as in the Near East?
[17:06] <KK> Yes, Wrengl.
[17:06] <Rebecca> Part of the Near East is shown on the map in the Codex. Aegyptos, Grecia, Isreal
[17:06] <cjws> hi - back now
[17:06] <Shiral> Well on the map at the back of the Codex, the Grand Canal separates  Rum from the main landmass. I wonder if that would the the Deryni World's equivalent of the Mediterranean
[17:06] <AEves_Spirit> I had thought that R'Kassi was middle eastern - is that wrong?
[17:06] <KK> Well, maybe we filled in the western end of the Med, too.
[17:07] <KK> R'Kassi is more Moorish Spain cognate.
[17:07] <AEves_Spirit> Ahh.. explains the mid-eastern feel though <g>
[17:07] <Shiral> I like that image of Moorish Spain, Katherine. I always thought that was a neat culture. <G>
[17:08] <KK> Keep in mind that early notions of that direction were very vague--until I started having to think in those directions!
[17:08] <Rebecca> Is Byzantyun further than Rum?  Sometimes reading Codex entries it sounds like it's somewhere on the eastern border of Torenth
[17:08] <the_Bee> Melissa, if the Grand Canal separates rum, what separates bourbon?
[17:08] <Shiral> So are the R'Kassan horses analagous to our Arabians?
[17:08] <Bynw> lol
[17:08] <cjws> water
[17:08] * Shiral shrugs.  Tom Collins? <G>
[17:08] <AEves_Spirit> That was my thought re. the horses Shiral...
[17:09] <KK> Ah, El Cid.  That's Uracca/Ariella, and Imre/not-Sancho. (Can't remember the younger brother's name.)
[17:09] <Wrengl> Or are they more like Berber horses?
[17:09] <KK> Yes, R'Kassans are like Arabs.
[17:09] <Shiral> Bingo! <G>
[17:09] <Wrengl> Thought so!
[17:10] <hygilac> I remember you mentioned El Cid at some point as an influence
[17:10] <KK> If you'll recall the film of El Cid, that's a lot the way I always pictured Imre and Ariella's court.
[17:10] <Shiral> And perhaps the Gwyneddan native horse breeds would be more like Anglo-arabs
[17:10] <KK> Yes.
[17:10] <Shiral> I've gotta get my hands on a copy of El Cid then.
[17:10] <KK> Except that we do have border ponies, like the Scottish garrons.
[17:11] <Shiral> Well, there ARE several different horse and pony breeds in Britain.
[17:11] * Kelos_al-Hazar wonders if there are any analogues to American quarterhorses in Deryni universe...yet.
[17:11] <Wrengl> Mountain ponies would make sense.
[17:11] <Shiral> I always pictured mountain ponies as being somewhat like our own Shetland or Welsh Mountain Ponies
[17:11] <Wrengl>  Afterall there are Shetland and Welsh ponies.
[17:11] <AEves_Spirit> Definitely not Dartmoors though - unless they were for the kids <g>
[17:11] <KK> Can't think of a direct quarterhorse analog, since they don't work cattle the way they were worked in the American West.  Quarterhorses were developed for a particular purpose.
[17:12] <Shiral> They wouldn't really have Morgan horses, either.  We know they have Morgan people, though. G<>
[17:12] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Quite true...
[17:12] <KK> Welsh ponies can be very fine-boned, like miniature horses. Shetlands tend to be square, with a leg on each corner.  Think Thelwell.
[17:12] * Wrengl Thumper wants to know if there are corgis?
[17:12] <AEves_Spirit> lol Wrengl
[17:12] <cjws> i bet they have rather large war horses though
[17:13] <Shiral> LOL! I remember the Thelwel books, Katherine!
[17:13] <KK> There are probably some Thumper dogs.
[17:13] <Shiral> Would they have dogs like Scottish Deerhounds or Greyhounds?  I ask, because I'm about to stick a dog like that into my latest Fanfic project
[17:13] <Wrengl> I am sure there are war horses
[17:13] <KK> We had some Thelwell placemats for years.  Cameron had a black shetland pony named Mamie, who used to buck him off once every time he tried to ride her; then she was fine.
[17:14] <cjws> are they gwyneddi pups?
[17:14] <Shiral> Yes <G>
[17:14] <Jessie> are there border collies in the 11 kingdoms?
[17:14] <KK> Deerhounds and greyhounds--yes!  And war horses were...big, destriers.  But there were also palfreys and other lighter, more comfortable horses.
[17:14] <Wrengl> Scottish Deerhounds or Irish Wolfhound types would probably be logical.

[17:15] <Shiral> When I think of Mountain Ponies, I think of rather shaggy, sturdy critters
[17:15] <KK> Is that Germany Laura?
[17:15] <Shiral> I was thinking that Araxie would have a pup given to her as a gift and Kelric falls for it...
[17:15] <Laura> yes, but "Germany Laura" is in Texas.  So I am awake.
[17:16] <KK> Ah, ha.  That's where you were off to two weeks ago.  Still there, or back and forth since then?
[17:16] <Laura> still here for 2 more weeks
[17:16] <Shiral> Would Destriers be like Shire horses, Katherine?
[17:17] <KK> Yes, something like.  Big, heavy war horses.
[17:17] <hygilac> that's too big, shiral
[17:17] <Shiral> Trot them and the ground shakes, right? <G>
[17:17] <Wrengl> Yes, indeed
[17:17] <Jessie> Katherine -- are there border collies in the 11 kingdoms? (my Izzie/Isabelle wants to know)
[17:17] <hygilac> they are gorgeous things, though
[17:17] <Shiral> And the rider is still vibrating four hours after dismounting. <G>
[17:17] <KK> I think Gwyneddan destriers tend to be a bit lighter than Shires or Clydesdales.
[17:18] <KK> Probably border collies.  Definitely sheep dogs of some sort--or sorts.
[17:18] <Shiral> More like the Fresians Sp? That black breed of horse from Europe, I mean.  Still pretty big boned, but not quite a draft horse
[17:18] <KK> They don't wear super heavy plate armor in Gwynedd, so they don't need the really big war horses.
[17:18] <Wrengl> As long as there are no dogs with the reputation of the smithfield collies
[17:18] * AEves_Spirit winces at the thought of riding a Shire horse into battle - end up seriously bow-legged
[17:19] <KK> Fresians?  Oh, yes!  When we saw Ladyhawk, I didn't think I was going to he able to keep Scott in his seat!
[17:19] <Shiral> <G>
[17:19] <Shiral> Must feel like riding a brontosaurus though.
[17:20] <Wrengl> I will bet that.  Slightly narrower back would be nice.
[17:20] <AEves_Spirit> Think Thelwell again Shiral - the legs sticking out perpendiular to the horse ;-)
[17:20] <Shiral> LOL, Aeve
[17:21] <the_Bee> Are Thelwells real or fictional?
[17:21] <Shiral> Fictional.
[17:21] <Shiral> Very funny pictures of horses and ponies and riders
[17:21] <KK> I believe they're based on real killer=Shetlands.
[17:21] <hygilac> from?
[17:21] <AEves_Spirit> Shiral - you ever seen English kids on their ponies at a Gymkhana? lol
[17:21] <KK> Any of you even watched poly club competitions?  Definitely drawn from real life.
[17:22] <Shiral> Well no, I've only been to England once. But I've been to horse shows here. Used to own a horse before I went to College
[17:22] <Wrengl> Have seen pictures of Gymkhana's, also on Three fat Ladies
[17:22] <KK> We think alike, Aeves.
[17:22] <AEves_Spirit> <BG> - I take that as a great compliment Katherine!
[17:22] <KK> ;-)
[17:22] <Shiral> I remember one Thelwel, This child had saddled up her pony and was facing forward, but when she made the pony go, she'd put the saddle on in the wrong direction. <G>
[17:23] <Shiral> It was hard to tell which end was the head and which end was the tail
[17:23] <AEves_Spirit> lol - remember that one too
[17:23] <Kelos_al-Hazar> What is the ratio of left-handed to right-handed in Gwynedd? About the same as here?
[17:23] <KK> Oh, yes, there are dozens of those.  And Shetlands do, indeed, grow enough hair for the winter that it's sometimes hard to tell the head end from the tail end.
[17:23] <KK> Not too many lefties.
[17:23] <Laura> oh darn
[17:24] <KK> I've since learned that it's caurrie-fisted.
[17:24] <Shiral> But then, one of the best people is corrie fisted in Kelson's time. <G>
[17:24] <KK> Had to go with a phonetic spelling until I finally saw it in print.
[17:24] <Rebecca> Well, that's not like in the real world.  There are alot more lefties than people think
[17:24] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Agree, Laura...especially since I'm SERIOUSLY caurrie-fisted.
[17:24] <hygilac> so is laura :-)
[17:24] <Rebecca> I'm lefty too.  As is my brother.  And about 60 percent of my friends
[17:24] <Wrengl> Yes we do.  Some of the best people are lefties. Followed by double handed people.
[17:25] <Laura> are you like me Kelos, your right hand only exists to assist the left?
[17:25] <Kelos_al-Hazar> We're the world's largest and most discriminated against minority...
[17:25] <KK> There, as here, I suspect that natural lefties are encouraged, in various ways, to use their right.
[17:25] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Yep.
[17:25] <the_Bee> We lefties are either geniuses or madmen ;-)
[17:25] <Rebecca> I actually use both.
[17:25] <hygilac> or required to
[17:25] <Wrengl> Which sometimes mucks up other things!
[17:25] <AEves_Spirit> When I was young I used to try to teach myself to be left handed, as left-handers are usually better at art. <g>
[17:26] <Wrengl> I'm double
[17:26] <Rebecca> Some things I do solely with my right hand, because that's how I was taught.
[17:26] <Wrengl> But they changed me from left when I was VERY little
[17:26] <Shiral> I'm a righty.  My left hand just holds stuff down. <G>
[17:26] <KK> Well, it's a serious consideration for a swordsman.
[17:26] <hygilac> I did that too, Aeves
[17:26] <Rebecca> Or I would mimic righties
[17:26] <Shiral> Or an archer. <G>
[17:26] <the_Bee> Brion tried to change Dhugal.
[17:26] <Shiral> It didn't take. <G>
[17:27] <AEves_Spirit> I get really annoyed when schools try to force kids to use their right hand to write when they're naturally left-handed
[17:27] <Rebecca> Oh, I do archery right handed.
[17:27] <Shiral> I know that seems very wrong to me.
[17:27] <Rebecca> Don't know why. Just always have.  Like bowling.  Bowl right handed too.  but play tennis lefthanded
[17:27] <KK> But writing English is better done with the right hand, because of smearing the ink.
[17:27] <Wrengl> That happens.  Kathi only uses her right hand for scissors because she had to in order to cut the string they used to hold her left hand down so she would not use it.
[17:28] <AEves_Spirit> Learn to write in Chinese ;-)
[17:28] <Laura> lol Pat
[17:28] <Shiral> I once saw a mug that said  "Hire the left handed, it's fun to watch them try to write. "
[17:28] <KK> There's a thought.  But there's no extant language that's as versatile as English.
[17:28] <the_Bee> It's called mixed dominance, Rebecca.
[17:28] <Shiral> Or in Hebrew
[17:28] <Kelos_al-Hazar> When I broke my left hand, I really had trouble...
[17:28] <Rebecca> I use righthanded scissors because left handed scissors always have crappy blades.  I would take my mother's sewing sheers.  She didn't like that.
[17:28] <AEves_Spirit> Big words, Katherine - don't forget I'm only a Brummie! lol
[17:29] <Laura> fortunately when I broke my hand, it was my right one
[17:29] <Wrengl> I usually use my right hand but you can really annoy a ping pong opponent when you change hands in mid serve.
[17:29] <AEves_Spirit> lol Wrengl
[17:29] <KK> A friend of mine had a stroke and lost the use of her right hand; she can still only barely write with her left, and that was 15 years ago.
[17:29] <Jessie> Katherine -- is the Anthology at the publishers?
[17:29] <Shiral> Oh dear, your poor friend, Katherine
[17:29] <KK> Anthology has been delivered.
[17:29] <Jessie> to be released for ???
[17:29] <Bynw> and that is the Anthology as a whole going to be called??
[17:30] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I can write with either hand...but my right-handed writing is much slower and larger.
[17:30] <KK> They haven't told me the release date; I'm waiting for the acceptance notification--and the check!--so I can pay my contributors.
[17:30] <KK> I think I ended up calling it Deryni Tales.
[17:30] <cjws> part one
[17:31] <cjws> <G>
[17:31] <KK> Hopefully, part one.
[17:31] <Jessie> if this sells well -- are they interested in more anthologies?
[17:31] <KK> I certainly hope so.
[17:31] <AEves_Spirit> Katherine - how many hours per day, on average, do you spend writing?
[17:31] <Shiral> Everybody hit the stores when it comes out....<G>
[17:31] <Kelos_al-Hazar> No "hopefully" about it, KK...LOL!
[17:31] <KK> Maybe sixish?
[17:31] <AEves_Spirit> wow
[17:32] <cjws> depends on who she's channeling<G>
[17:32] <AEves_Spirit> lol cj
[17:32] <KK> But when I'm on a roll or pushing a deadline, it's far more--maybe double, for short periods.
[17:32] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Though I have to admit, most of the Deryni fanfic I've seen is novella length or longer...
[17:32] <cjws> hit our web site and order through Amazon too
[17:32] <Shiral> Very true .. I'll take every copy you've got of "Deryni Tales," Please...."
[17:32] <cjws> lol
[17:32] <Laura> Is that like spending  6 hours a day herding errant children KK :-)
[17:32] <Wrengl> Does the web site get a credit from amazon, carolyn?
[17:32] <cjws> yep
[17:33] <KK> I don't have room for much novella-length stuff.  Unless you're as good as Lohr Miller, keep it shorter, please.  And most that I publish will go through Deryni Archives first.
[17:33] <cjws> for any purchases
[17:33] <Wrengl> Then I shall have to remember to order katherine's books that way.
[17:33] <cjws> good
[17:33] <cjws> we have a link on the front page and throughout the site
[17:33] <AEves_Spirit> Is that Amazon.com or do you get credit from .co.uk also?
[17:33] <KK> But isn't it a buzz, when you're on a roll?!
[17:33] <cjws> .com
[17:34] <Shiral> I have to write in short, intense spurts.  Or hopefully intense spurts.  I would LOVE to be able to spend six hours a day writing!
[17:34] <Wrengl> When I am actionally writing, it depends on how wound up I get in the writing.
[17:34] <Rebecca> I can't sit for that long!  :)  I always get restless and have to pace around
[17:34] <Shiral> When the urge hits, I write as long as I can. I've learned not to waste those times they come so rarely
[17:34] <cjws> thinking on your feet
[17:34] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Oh, I was on a roll, yes...Ooop! Gotta run!
[17:34] <KK> That's actual writing time.  I spend a lot of time wading through bill paying and administrivia like everyone else.  Sometimes I wonder how the days evaporate.
[17:34] <AEves_Spirit> I haven't had the nerve to try writing since I left college...
[17:35] <hygilac> i had a friend who used to clean house between writing spurts
[17:35] <Jessie> are there plans to re-release Lammas Night
[17:35] <Rebecca> Go to the kitchen get something to eat.  Go to the kitchen get something to drink.  go to the kitchen get some chocolate...
[17:35] <hygilac> I kept trying to get himn to come write at my apartment sometime
[17:35] <KK> I don't think Lammas is officially OP yet.
[17:35] <Shiral> When I'm really into a project,  The house can crumble into dust for all I care.  There will ALWAYS be more housework waiting
[17:36] <Shiral> I drink a lot of tea when I write
[17:36] <KK> And no matter how well housework is done, it always has to be done over again.  Talk about depressing....!
[17:36] <Jessie> Every bookstore that I have checked has said that Lammas Night is OUT OF PRINT
[17:36] <cjws> yuck anything but housework
[17:36] <Rebecca> It is according to Ballantine's site.
[17:36] <Wrengl> Maybe they just need to print more copies to get them to the booksellers.
[17:36] <Shiral> I've made peace with my inner slob. <G>
[17:36] <KK> OK, I'll have to check on that.
[17:36] * AEves_Spirit nods in fervent agreement with Carolyn
[17:36] <cjws> lol
[17:37] <hygilac> Ilike that Shiral
[17:37] <Shiral> My mom can't stand that about me though.  She's a demon housekeeper, but she can't figure out why she never has time to write!
[17:37] <Wrengl> Housework is worse than any four letter word
[17:37] <cjws> how's lucy kk?
[17:37] <KK> We filled a skip last weekend (dumpster, to you folks), as part of a general decluttering--and getting rid of debris now that the kitchen is finished.
[17:37] <Shiral> I Like the RESULTS when I've done my housework, and I like a sanitary kitchen and bathroom.  But I hate DOING it
[17:38] <Shiral> Are you enjoying the kitchen,  I hope? <G>
[17:38] <KK> Thank God for Lucy the intrepid, who is grand.
[17:38] <cjws> she's a cutie
[17:38] <KK> I appreciate my new kitchen every time I walk into it.  Took some pictures Saturday.  Will post one to the website when I get them back. No digital camera yet.
[17:39] <Shiral> And how's Jessica?
[17:39] <the_Bee> I got a used copy at Half.com
[17:39] <KK> I'll have them by the time I'm in california, Carolyn.
[17:39] <cjws> good job bee
[17:39] <cjws> good
[17:39] <cjws> <G>
[17:39] <Rebecca> you found a used copy of Lammas Night>
[17:40] <Rebecca> I can't find one for less than 85 dollars
[17:40] <KK> I may have to see about privately republishing it.  If it's truly OP, all rights are now mine again.
[17:40] <hygilac> that is a lotta money
[17:40] <cjws> laura you have one
[17:40] <Shiral> I really wish my copy of LN hadn't disappeared when I was moving...
[17:40] <Rebecca> Too steep for me
[17:41] <Shiral> There are a few things that have to come first in my life, too...
[17:41] <Laura> no I dont, I borrowed Connie's
[17:41] <cjws> now i'm wondering where mine is??
[17:41] <cjws> oh
[17:41] <Wrengl> Mine's in a box somewhere.
[17:41] <hygilac> I finally found mine again
[17:41] <Shiral> If I'm lucky, maybe mine is too.
[17:41] <cjws> re-print sounds great
[17:41] <Laura> unless you slipped one into my box? Yes!!!!?
[17:41] <Shiral> But I'm afraid I no longer have it
[17:42] <AEves_Spirit> Hope it turns up Shiral
[17:42] <Wrengl> A reprint sounds good anyway.  Paperbacks have a relatively short life-span
[17:42] <cjws> but I bet when the adept next one is on track that ace will want to publish it
[17:42] <the_Bee> www.AllBookstores.com lets you compare prices from several online bookstores.
[17:42] <hygilac> mine is truly the worse for wear, having been seriously reread several times
[17:42] <Shiral> If it's anywhere it's out in my storage compartment which is very well populated by spiders....<SHIVER>
[17:43] <KK> Carolyn or anyone, do you know anything about these print-on-demand companies?
[17:43] <cjws> hmmmm we can find out
[17:43] <Bynw> i'm sure research can be done on them :-)
[17:43] <the_Bee> Mine was $1.25 plus shipping.
[17:43] <hygilac> good heavens
[17:44] <Wrengl> On both coasts, especially.
[17:44] <Rebecca> I hate you!  I've checked half.com several times and it wasn't available
[17:44] <KK> Yes, it's possible that I might be able to get Ace to republish it with Adept 6.  It almost never happens--but having said that, there have been multiple publishers for Tolkien, at least.
[17:44] <Rebecca> always a day late....
[17:44] <cjws> found a swedish company<G>
[17:45] <AEves_Spirit> I'm still trying to get Harrowing and Deryni Magic.. found them on Bibliofind but the vendor still hasn't got back to me... ;-(
[17:45] <Rebecca> I just pulled up Random house's Ballatine site.  ******* Prince is the only book listed in print
[17:45] <KK> I've got copies of Harrowing, I know; not sure about Deryni Magic.
[17:45] <Shiral> I have an extra copy of Harrowing I think, Aeve
[17:46] <Shiral> If Bibliofind doesn't come through I could let you have it.
[17:46] <AEves_Spirit> Wow.. thank you :-)
[17:46] * Bynw has 2 copies of Deryni Magic...one in perfect condition the other has been through hell and back
[17:46] <cYz> Bynw you lend your books?
[17:46] <KK> If folk will let me know what's needed, I can sell extra copies for cover price.
[17:46] <Shiral> Yours too, Bynw? <G> Mine is missing both the front and back covers, <G>
[17:46] *** Rambart20 has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[17:47] <AEves_Spirit> That would be great, Katherine.  :-)
[17:47] <KK> Hi, bart.
[17:47] <Rambart20> howdy Katherine
[17:47] <Bynw> as a roleplayer that book comes in handy
[17:47] <Rambart20> hey Aeves Spirit haven't met you yet
[17:48] <AEves_Spirit> Not met you til now either, bart :-)
[17:48] <Rambart20> I'm the who usually starts the food fights
[17:48] <AEves_Spirit> Noooo <groans> - I've heard about them...
[17:48] <Rambart20> but not today
[17:48] <Shiral> We're NOT going to have one now!
[17:48] <Shiral> <G>
[17:48] <Wrengl> They are, however, fun.  Thumper LOVES them.
[17:48] <AEves_Spirit> lol
[17:48] <KK> And who starts whalloping people with trout?
[17:48] <Rambart20> I know I am being good
[17:49] <AEves_Spirit> lol...lol
[17:49] <Wrengl> Usually Kendall starts with the trout
[17:49] <Bynw> not me :-)... I mind-rip .... takes care of problems faster that way
[17:49] <Shiral> I'm the virtual pie thrower when the occasion arises
[17:49] <Rambart20> howdy to everyone I missed  :0)
[17:50] <AEves_Spirit> Please don't throw anything containing carbs at me - I'm on the Atkins Diet! lol
[17:50] <Rebecca> Personally I perfer eating food, to throwing it :)
[17:50] <Shiral> Jessie and I have thought up the perfect Murdoch Sundae though, Katherine
[17:50] <Wrengl> I usually have a moray eel or water balloons full of ketchup
[17:50] <Rambart20> I usually end up loading up a slingshot with mashed potatoes
[17:50] <Shiral> Oh boy, just MENTION food fight and things fall apart. <G>
[17:50] <KK> Perhaps I shall brandish....a salmon!
[17:50] <Wrengl> LOL
[17:50] <AEves_Spirit> lol
[17:50] <Bynw> lol
[17:50] <Rebecca> I thought we were here to ask Katherine questions :)
[17:50] <Shiral> Carolyn will be happy!
[17:51] <Rambart20> okay I'll go sit on the couch and be quiet
[17:51] <KK> The salmon of wisdom, of course!
[17:51] <Shiral> We are, Rebecca
[17:51] <Wrengl> It might be a bit hard sitting on the coach, bart
[17:51] <KK> Well, only a couple more, guys.  It's nearly midnight here, and Scott needs to finish an e-mail before we shut down for the night.
[17:51] <Rambart20> I'll sit on the floor then
[17:52] <Shiral> Will the contributors to Deryni Tales get a complimentary copy?
[17:52] * Wrengl thumper goes to sit next to bart, he's been waiting for someone to sit on the floor.
[17:52] <hygilac> What is the release date for the Bruce book, KK?
[17:52] <KK> Of course contributors will get a comp copy.  I"ll try to wangle two, but I don't know.
[17:53] <the_Bee> Speaking of Deryni Magic, what were descendants of survivors of Caeriesse's destruction doing in Gwynedd before Caeriesse sank?
[17:53] <KK> The second Bruce book should be hitting any day now.  Debby got her author copies Friday, but mine will probably come tomorrow.
[17:54] <Laura> Katherine, would a Deryni be able to protect themselves and others from a bomb blast
[17:54] <cYz> i will write you a letter soon KK :) if i manage to put the address on the envelope in the right way .)
[17:54] <KK> I'll have to defer the Caeriesse question; I'm in Stefan Coram mode right now, and Lewys and Michon de Courcy and....
[17:55] <Shiral> Oh good....<G>
[17:55] <Wrengl> Very good
[17:55] <Shiral> How is Childe Morgan going this week?
[17:55] <Rebecca> good, good, good...
[17:55] <KK> Bomb blasts--wow.  Dunno.  You'd have to know it was coming, I think.
[17:56] <Laura> how much time do you think you would need before the bomb detonated
[17:56] <KK> I've spent last week pulling out all the characters (or their parents) who can be drafted for service in this time span.
[17:57] <AEves_Spirit> Katherine, how do you manage not to get tangled in all the family trees?
[17:57] <Shiral> A Deryni would have to know what a bomb WAS before they could figure out how to defend themselves. But wouldnt' a ward major help?
[17:57] <cYz> mh ?
[17:57] <Rambart20> not in this case (G)
[17:57] <Laura> we're talking modern Deryni here Shiral :-)
[17:57] <Shiral> Oh. right. <G>
[17:57] <hygilac> Bart is in his destructive mode
[17:57] <Laura> lol
[17:58] <KK> I think a Ward Major might help--but it doesn't stop the circulation of air, breathing-wise, so I'm not sure.
[17:58] <Shiral> Boys will be boys....<G>
[17:58] <Laura> Dang, I dont think I will have time for the wards major
[17:58] <KK> I have Family Tree Maker.
[17:58] <hygilac> Yes, and sometimes they just like to be NOISY
[17:58] <Wrengl> Yes, they tend to like the big boom.  Just ask Ivanova.
[17:58] <Shiral> Not a hint was that, Linda?
[17:58] <Shiral> <G>
[17:59] <AEves_Spirit> Is that a database program to assist?
[17:59] <KK> FTM is a genealoogy program, and I've now got several thousand names entered in the Gwynedd file.
[17:59] <Rebecca> Me too :)
[17:59] <Laura> wow
[17:59] <AEves_Spirit> <ouch>
[17:59] <Rambart20> yikes
[18:00] <Rebecca> 2500 + I think
[18:00] <Shiral> I'll bet the inventors of FTM didn't realize to which purposes it would be put...<G>
[18:00] <AEves_Spirit> <g>
[18:00] <KK> But I pulled my lists this week from the index at the end of HD and beefed it up from the Codex.  About 12 pages later....
[18:00] <Shiral> THey should feel honored to host the Haldanes, McLains Morgans Corwyns..Howards....<G>
[18:00] <Wrengl> I need to get that one to put my own people in, sounds good
[18:01] <KK> Well, it's now Pumpkin Time, folks, and my eyelids need toothpicks, so I'll say goodnight until next week.
[18:02] <Shiral> Night Katherine!  Thanks for the lovely long chat. <G>
[18:02] <Bynw> have a good night and happy anniv Katherine
[18:02] <Rebecca> Night Katherine.  Look for the corrections in you mailbox in the morning
[18:02] <the_Bee> and have a portal handy.
[18:02] <AEves_Spirit> Goodnight Katherine.  Thanks for your time :)
[18:02] <Laura> have a good week KK
[18:02] <Wrengl> Good night Katherine
[18:02] <Jessie> bye KK -- happy writing and happy anniversary
[18:02] <Rambart20> bye KK thanks for coming good night
