This is a version of the Chat with KK on 3/18/01 -- it has been edited a bit
to delete the "comings and goings" of chatters & side comments (hellos etc) -- Jessie

[17:14] *** Katherine_Kurtz has joined #Deryni_Destinations
[17:14] *** DeryniBot sets mode: +o Katherine_Kurtz
[17:14] <Bynw> Hiyas KK
[17:14] <Shiral> Katherine, you're really Here?
[17:14] <Katherine_Kurtz> Hello, hello!
[17:19] <KK> And why did it give me a number, when at least I started out as Katherine?
[17:19] <the_Bee> Who knows what lurks in the mind of a computer?
[17:19] <KK> Amen!
[17:20] <KK> Gremlins are definitely a possibility.
[17:20] <Kendall> or maybe the Gargoyle of Saint Patrick tried to use the computer
[17:20] <Shiral> He has a lot of experience with glitch gremlins
[17:22] <Kelos_al-Hazar> KK, I'd like to know something, please? How are the colours of auras determined in Deryni?
[17:22] <KK> Auras just--are.
[17:23] <KK> Maybe there's a slight analogy with eye color.
[17:23] <Kendall> I was right
[17:23] <the_Bee> Haldanes have red eyes??
[17:24] <Kendall> we were discussing this just before you came on KK and I suggested eye color
[17:24] <the_Bee> Do you think auras might reflect personality?
[17:24] <KK> LOL.  No, but Deryni have particular aura colors, and these are determined by the same kinds of genetic mixings that will make some folk have blue eyes, some green, etc.
[17:24] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Would it be conceivable for there to be more than one color in an aura? Or is that unreasonable, Katherine?
[17:24] <Rambart20> and I think it is the heritage
[17:24] <KK> Everybody in my family has blue eyes except me.  Old green eyes, here.
[17:25] <Bynw> From what I've seen.... aura color is the same as the deryni's handfire
[17:25] <Shiral> Hey, they work just as well as blue, don't they?
[17:25] <KK> Well, these are not auras in the sense that new age folk talk about auras, remember.
[17:25] * Kelos_al-Hazar apologizes for appearing to monopolize the Lady's time here so far
[17:25] <Jessie> can any color be an aura/handfire color?
[17:25] <Gamgee> another (but similar) question......  can/will an aura change with time?
[17:25] <KK> Rather, Bynw, the handfire is the same as the aura color.
[17:26] <Bynw> could be that way :-)
[17:26] <the_Bee> What color is your aura, Katherine?
[17:26] <KK> I haven't a clue.  You tell me. :-)
[17:27] <Rambart20> I say green or silver
[17:27] <the_Bee> What color would you like?
[17:27] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I am quite aware of the fact that it isn't an aura in the sense of the New Age beliefs, KK...but is it plausible for there to be more than one colour involved in Deryni auras?
[17:27] <the_Bee> Indigo or silvery blue for me.
[17:27] <KK> Remember, I don't see such things myself, re supernatural stuff--like our ghosts.  I sometimes hear things, but I don't see them.  But Scott sees stuff.
[17:27] <Wrengl> You should ask Scott if he has ever seen your aura.
[17:28] <KK> I don't think there'd be more than one color.  It's a side-effect of the person's power, I think.  I doubt the colors have any more function than human eye color does.
[17:29] <KK> I don't think Scott sees auras; just ghosts.
[17:29] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I think those are simple(?) electrical fields.
[17:29] <Kendall> the ghosts or the auras, Kelos?
[17:29] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Mainly because inanimate objects were also discovered to have Kirlian auras.
[17:29] <KK> I don't think Kirlian stuff is electrical.  More life-forcical, to coin a word.
[17:30] <Wrengl> Hi JastaElf
[17:30] <KK> JastaElf?  Are you a friend of Sharon Henderson?
[17:30] <JastaElf> Hi Katherine, I AM Sharon!  :-)
[17:30] <KK> LOL and ROTFL!
[17:31] <Wrengl> Hi Sharon.  Now all we need is Bambi to make it in.
[17:31] <JastaElf> She's still trying
[17:31] <KK> Who else could it have been?  (still chuckling)
[17:31] <JastaElf> :-)  KK what are you doing up so late!!  :-)
[17:31] <KK> I just got back from Scotland.
[17:31] <Kendall> answering our questions of course
[17:32] <Wrengl> And chatting.
[17:32] <Wrengl> Nice to see you Sharon.
[17:32] <KK> I wouldn't necessarily have come on line this late for me, but
I had to check my e-mail anyway--and I was feeling guilty since I haven't shown up here for a couple of weeks.
[17:32] <Kelos_al-Hazar> It was an idea, nothing more...it would have been cool to get it to work, but hey...:)
[17:33] <Wrengl> Sharon's another of the gang that goes to Darkover, guys
[17:33] <KK> Sharon did a dynamite Deryni story about Duncan and Maryse's secret wedding that will be in the new Deryni anthology.
[17:34] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Would have been cool, too... Wait a min...I know several people with eyes with different colors (ie: one blue, one green)...Hmmm...
[17:34] <JastaElf> <blush>
[17:34] <KK> Go for it, Kelos!
[17:34] <the_Bee> Katherine, is it true you're going to be at Arisia in Boston next January?
[17:34] <Wrengl> It's a good idea kelos, just have the person have bi-color eyes.
[17:34] <KK> Yes.
[17:35] <the_Bee> Yay
[17:35] <Shiral> We should get that info on to the Website
[17:35] <KK> Wait!  Eye color and aura color aren't necessarily related.
[17:35] <Kelos_al-Hazar> It might be possible that such a strange genetic trait could affect the aura instead of the eyes. Hmm.
[17:35] <KK> It's just an analogy.
[17:35] <Wrengl> Hope the weather is not too bad so we can get up there.
[17:35] <KK> Bingo.
[17:36] <Jessie> bye shiral
[17:36] <Shiral> I will
[17:36] <Kendall> Katherine, how does one know they have the gift of healing? I am working on a story for The Deryni Archives, the magazine about healers.
[17:38] <the_Bee> I sent Julianne my effort for DA 17 this weekend.
[17:38] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Might do that once it's complete...especially if it goes a different direction from that it appears to be taking right now. :)
[17:38] <KK> As to how one knows--if the gift isn't detected in childhood by another Healer or during testing, it sometimes shows up spontaneously in time of need.
[17:38] <Rambart20> I sent mine a couple of weeks ago
[17:39] <KK> Wow, I'll bet Julianne and LauraJ are having fun!
[17:39] <Jessie> who tests & how do they test for the healing ability?
[17:39] <the_Bee> Rhay ans Evaine identified their Healer children in the womb.
[17:39] <KK> The Gabrilites used to test.
[17:39] <Kendall> How would parents know to send their child to a Healer?
[17:40] <Rambart20> does Morgan have the knowledge to do that, KK
[17:40] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Rhys and Evaine may have been unusual, though.
[17:40] <KK> We haven't yet shown how, though.
[17:40] <Bynw> I would guess it's a form of Mind-Seeing by a Healer
[17:40] <KK> Rhys would have been able to scan for Healer's potential.
[17:40] <the_Bee> or knowing what to look for.
[17:41] * Kelos_al-Hazar decidedly plans on attending Darkovercon this year...but isn't sure he'll be able to yet.
[17:41] <the_Bee> not to mention Evaine's reaction when Tavis was injured.
[17:41] <Kendall> What if a child had the healing ability during Kelson's time, what then?
[17:42] <KK> A child usually wouldn't be able to manifest the gift.  It usually appears during adolescence, as the other Deryni gifts start maturing.
[17:42] <Kendall> so Tieg was just a matter of need?
[17:42] <Rambart20> are tieg and his sister the exceptions
[17:43] <KK> Tieg comes of a powerful Deryni heritage.
[17:43] <Jessie> Did the Gabrilites test upon request or  -- how did they know who to test -- or did the randomly test everyone for healing?
[17:43] <the_Bee> Morgan found out because he *needed* to heal Derry.
[17:43] <KK> And his sister is definitely an exception.
[17:43] <Kendall> I agree
[17:43] <Kelos_al-Hazar> I'd've thought that females would be Healers, too...
[17:44] <the_Bee> They're rare.
[17:44] <Kelos_al-Hazar> Probably better than men, too, since women seem to be better connected to life.
[17:44] <Rambart20> I have a question is Alyce deCorwyn a healer?
[17:44] <Kendall> if there were an unusual amount of Helaers during Kelson's time would they band together to save the art of healing?
[17:44] <KK> Gabrilites test upon request.  A candidate would have to possess powerful Deryni potential to begin with.  Remember that Healers are very specialized Deryni.
[17:45] <the_Bee> She must have at least carried the recessive gene
[17:45] <Kendall> I hope you understand that gibberish
[17:45] <Kendall> that's the premise of my story
[17:47] <Kendall> if there were an unusual amount of Healers during Kelson's time, would they band together to save the art of healing? retyped
[17:48] <KK> Why would there be an unusual number of Healers?  Remember that, at least in Gwynedd, there's no one to train them.
[17:48] <Kendall> I know
[17:49] <KK> On the others hand, we know that there are a few Healers in Torenth still.  The court of Torenth has access to at least one.
[17:49] <Shiral> In Liam's time?
[17:49] <Jessie> besides the the healer training that we have read about -- were they other healer traditions in other countries -- such as the desert areas etc.
[17:49] <KK> Yes, there would have been other systems.
[17:49] <Kendall> My premise is a lost band of a Healer's order
[17:50] <Rambart20> so there is some sort of scola somewhere right?
[17:50] <KK> You'd rarely have enough Healers together to constitute a band, by Kelson's time.
[17:50] <Rambart20> in torenth maybe
[17:50] <KK> Yes, In Torenth, maybe--or maybe even farther east.
[17:51] <Kendall> sort of like when Kelson and Dhugal accidentally found Saint Kyriell's
[17:51] <KK> I suspect there's more than one such hidden body.
[17:53] <Kendall> My story is still in the early stages that it can be modified
[17:54] <Kendall> you have answered my question of the night
[17:54] <KK> Well, guys, I hate to tell you this, but the sleepies are beginning to attack.  It was a busy weekend, and I need to put the Deryni Anthology to bed tomorrow.  So I think I'm going to have to sign off momentarily.
[17:54] <KK> The cats are also campaigning to go to bed.
[17:54] <KK> Edgar starts pawing papers on the desk when he's ready.
[17:55] <KK> Well, I think I gave you some new things to talk about. :-)
[17:55] <Jessie> When is the release date for the anthology?
[17:56] <KK> Note sure on release date.  Maybe just before Christmas?  Based on how long it takes to produce it.
[17:56] <JastaElf> Can we stay and talk after Mom goes to bed?  :-)
[17:56] <KK> Yes, you can stay up--and with flashlights under the covers!
[17:56] <KK> I really would like to stay longer, but I really am getting sleepy.
[17:56] <JastaElf> If only we could conjure handfire!
[17:56] <Kendall> Oh btw thanks for St. Patrick's Gargoyle in the mean time
[17:57] <KK> But I'll come back next Sunday night, and try to get here earlier.
[17:57] <KK> Glad you guys like the Gargoyle book.  We did its Dublin launch Thursday; sold 30 copies in less than 2 hours, which is not too bad.
[17:57] <JastaElf> How wonderful!!
[17:59] <KK> It's now the witching hour, official pumpkin time in Ireland. So good night, all!  See you next week.
[17:59] <KK> quit
