Post Prefixes
« on: March 22, 2016, 03:57:57 pm »

We can now have post prefixes. But of course we need prefix ideas. They are best used as a subtopic. Generally one word. Where the board category is a main topic but the prefix is a subtopic.

Clear as mud I hope!

Please reply with any ideas and we will see about adding them.

Maybe if I saw an example of how one might be used, I could come up with more ideas.

Yeah, "clear as mud" is a good phrase.  I'm not too sure I understand.  I'm admittedly not having one of my better brain days today, but maybe Evie's suggestion of an example would de-muddy the waters a bit.  :)
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

I'll add some tonight or tomorrow. You will see them if you make a new post or edit an original post.

OK I've added some prefixes. You will see the option when making new posts or editing an original post to a thread.

Ok, so I've opened this edit window to see if I can tell what you mean by a post prefix, but I'm still in the dark.  ???

Ummmmmmm, what IS a post prefix, and what will the benefits be of using them? Unless I've unwittingly used one through using the question mark message icon?

The forum is organized by broad topic categories, like this one here of Off Topic. Then by boards that narrow down the topic such as this one of Site Support. And then finally the posts themselves which detail whatever us members want to talk about listed in the Subject and fleshed out in the body of the post.

A prefix is an additional way of detailing the Subject of a post. Many forums use them for that purpose. They are also optional, they don't have to be used.

So if you make a new post you will see the option for the Prefix, it is right about where you type the Subject.

See the attached image :)

The message icon is also something that can be used to help sort out a post as well but its not the same as the Prefix.

Is the mud clearer?

OK, seeing the image attachment helps (wait, since when have I been able to see forum attachments? Even until quite recently, I couldn't!), but I've just discovered I have to be starting a new topic, not just a new post in someone else's topic, to see that option, so maybe that's why I couldn't find that preview menu last night. Also it doesn't show up in Mobile view, which is what I use much more often than not unless I'm home and planning on making a long post. But if I switch to the full version of the site and start a new topic, at least I can see it now.

The prefix only shows on a new post, not a reply. If you edit your original post you will see it as well. And yes it does not work on the Mobile theme.

Yes, in theory, but this is the first time I've ever been able to see an attachment in this forum, although I have always been able to see them on another Simple Machines forum I'm on. Maybe being made an admin switched something that is now allowing me to see them?

I don't think there are many posts that have attachments on them really. I checked the permissions for regular members and they do have permission to view attachments.

They're very rarely used here, although I remember at least one time when someone tried to use them quite a while back and some people could see the attachment while others could not. Regular members can see them, hmm? Maybe that's the problem; I'm one of those irregular, abnormal members! ;D

Seriously, it might be worth posting a test attachment something and asking people whether they are able to see the attachment or not. It could be that there was just a sporadic glitch in the system, but if not, seeing who is affected and being able to ask questions (Which browser? Full site or mobile? Were you logged in?) might help to troubleshoot the problem. But that's one reason I've always used image links, because those always show up for other viewers.

Yeah I'll review permission sets later. Tonight or this week sometime. But back on topic.

Now that you know where the Prefixes are ... thought?
