Doughal, that's in King Kelson's Bride, where Kelson helps Liam with his assumption of full kingship in Torenth.  Kelson winds up holding the West Quarter in on the ceremony at sort of the last minute due to the death of one of the people who was supposed to hold a quarter of the ward.
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

Movable wards were in KKB.  The Torenthi Royal Investiture involved Moving Wards.

I recently read Terry Goodkin's Confessor series and the wizards in those books had portable stones that blew up into
large rocks for doing magic.  Not quite the same but its an idea.
