Although to be fair to Donal he is trying to do what is best for his heir and his kingdom and it is not just about having his wicked way with Alyce - which I assume is why Kenneth doesn't do him serious damage, king or no king. And I imagine that Donal at this point is still seriously traumatised by Krispin's fate and possibly not acting at all rationally.
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
(Psalm 46 v1)

That idea of Kenneth being so calm about Donal nearly raping Alyce is one of the least believable things (to me, at least) to occur in canon.  If I were Kenneth or Alyce, I'd have been ready to cold-cock Donal at the very least!

Although that's an interesting point, that Donal may not have been totally rational by that point because of what happened to poor little Krispin.
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

Donal also had Kenneth 'in-his-pocket' or preprogrammed, so to say. After years of working with the king,  Kenneth was often under mild compulsions to not interfere or to guard without seeing what he was guarding. So in a sense, I do not think Kenneth could have rebelled against his king even if he wanted to. I love Kenneth dearly and if it had been any other man other than Donal, I know that man would have been skewered on his sword in an instant for even approaching Alyce with lascivious thoughts. The whole matter was Donal's fault for taking Kingship too far. At least we did not have a replay of Seif's ending. I could not have read more if Donal had turned on Kenneth that way.
