[07:09.41] <DesertRose> Hi KK!
[07:09.42] <Shiral> One of these days I should just come back and just start to sit on him. I'll BET he'd move, then
[07:09.43] <Evie> Hi KK
[07:09.44] <Jerusha> Hi KK!
[07:09.48] <Shiral> Hello Katherine
[07:09.57] <revanne> Hi KK
[07:10.02] <KK> Happy Memorial Day, folks.
[07:10.07] <DesertRose> I'm guessing a lot of people are doing Memorial Day weekend things.  :)
[07:10.10] <Jemler> hi kk
[07:10.10] <Evie> I threaten to sit on Gigi regularly, because it's the only way to make her move besides picking her up
[07:10.14] <Shiral> Happy Memorial Day backatcha
[07:10.31] <Jerusha> Happy Victoria Day a week late
[07:10.42] <Evie> happy Memorial Day
[07:10.46] <Shiral> Or they'll come in gradually, one at a time
[07:10.51] <revanne> Sorry can you explain memorial day?
[07:10.53] <DesertRose> Maybe so.
[07:11.08] <KK> Today I fulfilled the very glamorous task of getting my mother a new trash can.  The squirrels did a number on her old, less robust one.
[07:11.16] <Shiral> It's a holiday in which we honor people who have died fighting in various wars, Revanne
[07:11.30] <Jerusha> I did that for  my Dad last year, and put a bow on it
[07:11.33] <Evie> Memorial for fallen soldiers, revanne
[07:11.51] <DesertRose> Hey, it's necessary.  It might not be glamorous but it's certainly not optional. :)
[07:11.53] <KK> We also have Veterans' Day, which is the same as your Remembrance Day in the UK.
[07:11.54] <Shiral> Well, I suppose hardware stores are not where one would expect to find a lot of glamor
[07:12.35] <Evie> I guess if you glue on sequins and bling, it could be glamourous
[07:12.47] <DesertRose> So how was your week, KK, aside trash can wrangling?
[07:12.50] * Shiral scuttles about putting out mint oreo blizzards at the four quarters
[07:12.51] <KK> Try Lowe's.  I also bought a new American flag--the old one had flapped to tatters, and needs to be taken to the VFW guys to dispose of it in a suitable manner.
[07:12.52] <revanne> Ok so like our Remembrance day which is 11\11
[07:13.10] <Shiral> Same day, same purpose over here
[07:13.24] * Jerusha contributes spoons
[07:13.24] <Evie> yes, revanne, though we also have Veterans' Day on that date
[07:13.39] <KK> Yes, but we also have Veterans' Day.  And the 4th of July celebrates many of the same things.
[07:13.41] <Shiral> Veteran's day is to honor those who fought, but are still alive.
[07:13.54] <KK> We're a very patriotic country.  :)
[07:13.56] <Evie> .
[07:14.03] * DesertRose contributes chocolate chip ice cream.
[07:14.13] <Jerusha> We have the same remembrance day
[07:14.25] <revanne> Thanks for the info - so what about VFW?
[07:14.28] * Shiral adds hot fudge sauce and whipped cream
[07:14.41] <Evie> Veterans of Foreign Wars
[07:14.49] <Jemler> veterans of foreign wars
[07:14.51] <revanne> Stops asking questions to enjoy
[07:14.55] * Jerusha scoops up hot fudge and tries to look innocent
[07:15.05] <KK> One of their missions is to dispose of worn-out flags in a respectful manner.
[07:15.12] <revanne> Ah ok
[07:15.16] <Evie> eats hot fudge and forgets trying to look innocent
[07:15.36] * Shiral rolls eyes, snaps fingers and replenishes hot fudge supply
[07:15.38] <KK> They actually have a ceremony, and then burn the flags.
[07:15.53] <Jemler> what does that word mean? innocent?
[07:16.07] <Jerusha> Went to my niece's bridal shower yesterday.  They have a tradition of a "candy bar"  afterwards. OMG!
[07:16.44] <Jemler> your neice is the bride, and you were both in the shower? hmm..
[07:16.52] * Jemler ducks
[07:16.53] <Shiral> With candy, too!
[07:16.54] <Evie> Evie smacks Jemler upside the head with a mackerel
[07:16.58] <revanne> gets out of bed to go down to fridge to find raspberries and cream
[07:17.00] * DesertRose smacks Jemler with a trout.
[07:17.14] * Shiral swats Jemler with the pound plus chocolate bar from Trader Joe's
[07:17.30] <Jerusha> It was raining Smarties (the Canadian equivalent of M&Ms)
[07:17.34] * The_Bee (Mibbit@OWIRCN-37088b93.ma.comcast.net) has joined channel #deryni_destinations
[07:17.35] <Jemler> i'll stand up for that shiral!
[07:17.37] <DesertRose> Hi Bee.
[07:17.38] <Evie> Ooh, just remembered I have orange cream popsicles in the freezer
[07:17.39] <Jemler> hi bee
[07:17.40] <Jerusha> Hi Bee!
[07:17.45] <The_Bee> Hi Jemler
[07:17.48] <Evie> I love Smarties
[07:17.59] <The_Bee> and Jerusha and all
[07:18.04] * Shiral wishes she had raspberries and cream in the fridge.
[07:18.06] <Jemler> but you hit me with fish?
[07:18.14] <Shiral> Hi Bee
[07:18.16] <Jerusha> I actually like M&M
[07:18.22] <revanne> Hi Bee
[07:18.26] <Jerusha> s better, but chocolate is cholocate
[07:18.28] <Evie> I like M&Ms too
[07:18.36] * Shiral finished off the last of a bag of m&m's with peanut butter yesterday
[07:18.41] <The_Bee> Hi Shiral. What are you and Jemler standing up for?
[07:18.46] <Shiral> Chocolate
[07:19.04] <The_Bee> Hi Revanne
[07:19.20] <Jemler> shiral, m&ms with peanut butter are called reesespieces.
[07:19.27] <Jemler> shiral, m&ms with peanut butter are called reeses pieces.
[07:19.29] <Jerusha> Do we need to have a chocolate holiday?
[07:19.35] <Jemler> yes!
[07:19.40] <revanne> I made scones to go with them yesterday but we ate them all
[07:19.50] <Jerusha> Love scones
[07:20.08] <Shiral> No, actually these WERE M&Ms Jemler. They had chocolate AROUND the peanut butter
[07:20.11] * Kildara (Mibbit@OWIRCN-9c9591f2.pa.comcast.net) has joined channel #deryni_destinations
[07:20.15] <DesertRose> Hi Kildara.
[07:20.16] <Shiral> Hi Kildara
[07:20.19] <The_Bee> Hi Kildara
[07:20.19] <Evie> hi Kildara
[07:20.22] <Jemler> hi kildara
[07:20.24] <revanne> Hi
[07:20.25] <Jerusha> KK, didn't you publish a cheese scones recipe one upon a time?
[07:20.30] <Kildara> Hi - busy tonight!
[07:20.32] <Jerusha> Hi Kildara
[07:20.51] <Evie> brb...need to turn some light on, as rain just moved in and suddenly it's almost completely dark in my room
[07:21.22] * Jerusha creates handfire to be helpful
[07:21.46] <KK> Don't think so.  But I did publish a drop scone recipe that's a mainstay at our house.
[07:21.57] <KK> I think it's still somewhere on the website.
[07:22.05] <Jerusha> That might be it
[07:22.31] <Jerusha> I tried it and it was yummy
[07:23.07] <Evie> sounds good
[07:23.39] <Shiral> I made those--don't dare make them too often, as a great deal of jam seems to be consumed along with them
[07:23.53] <revanne> DD2 and I went to early Communion in Gloucester Cathedral this morning - they filmed some of Harry Potter in the cloisters
[07:23.57] <Jerusha> Just lots of butter for me
[07:24.10] <The_Bee> butter and honey
[07:24.17] <revanne> And cream
[07:24.29] * Shiral resists urge to go bake some shortbread.....
[07:24.43] <Jerusha> Awesome to have that much tradition and history so close, revanne
[07:24.44] <Evie> I love those cloisters. I have a photo of them as one of my phone wallpapers
[07:24.49] <revanne> Love shortbread
[07:25.06] <KK> That's a beautiful cathedral.
[07:25.09] <Shiral> How could anything with that much butter in them be bad, Revanne??
[07:25.34] <Shiral>  I'm a sucker for gothic architecture
[07:25.59] <Jerusha> I collect gargoyles
[07:26.01] <DesertRose> I bought rice flour for the specific purpose of Shiral's shortbread recipe.  :)
[07:26.04] <Jemler> revanne, you are in the uk, right?
[07:26.11] <Kildara> I used to have a small book of shortbread recipes. My favorite was one that used cornmeal (odd I know); it had a nice nutty crunch to it. Looked for the book this Christmas and can't find it.
[07:26.25] <Shiral> That's the thing that makes them special all right, DR =o)
[07:26.30] <DesertRose> Oh, that's no good, Kildara, that you can't find the cookbook.
[07:26.41] <Jerusha> I have a brown sugar shortbread cookie recipe that is very good
[07:26.54] <Kildara> Well - I mentioned it because I was hoping maybe someone has the same book??????
[07:26.54] <Jerusha> DS1  requests it every year for Christmas
[07:26.57] <The_Bee> Have you looked for recipes on-line?
[07:27.09] <Shiral> What's the book called Kildara?
[07:27.14] <Kildara> No, Bee, good idea. I look for other recipes all the time but didn't think to look for that
[07:27.24] <DesertRose> And yes, KK's drop scone recipe is still on the site under Community -> Rampant Lion Pub -> Baked Goods.
[07:27.35] <Jemler> can anyone tell me what a rusk is?
[07:27.39] <Kildara> Can't remember,Shiral - I think it came with one of my shortbread molds
[07:28.08] <revanne> Every time I visit somewhere historical I think of Evie saying - that's older than my country
[07:28.14] <DesertRose> LOL
[07:28.18] <Shiral> Ah, well I have a book of shortbread recipes, but I don't think it's the same one
[07:28.57] <revanne> Jemler a rusk is a hard biscuit - cookie
[07:28.59] <Evie> lol revanne
[07:29.30] <Jemler> i found a site called britishfooddepot.com
[07:29.32] <Jerusha> True though; amazing to contemplate how old they are
[07:29.50] <KK> A rusk is like twice-baked biscuits, often unsweetened like zweibach--which means, now that I think about it, twice-baked.  It's often given to babies to gum on while they're teething--or at least it used to be.
[07:30.12] <revanne> Sorry Jemler Tablet locked yes I'm in the UK
[07:30.14] <Kildara> Older than my country - I like that
[07:30.18] <Evie> LOL! I read "a rusk is a hard biscuit" followed by "amazing to contemplate how old they are"
[07:30.27] <Shiral> lOL
[07:30.38] <Jerusha> They just taste that old
[07:31.06] <Shiral> I don't think that's why they're hard though. Unless they were in that biscuit tin that Archbishop Hubert kept stashed under his bed for late night snacks.
[07:31.21] <DesertRose> I remember letting DD gum on zweibachs when she was that age.
[07:31.30] <Jerusha> I would not give those to anyone's baby
[07:31.31] <Evie> Good think he didn't crave snacks while Javan was hidden there, then
[07:31.34] <Jemler> i can't believe this one: Horlicks , the original malted milk drink.
[07:31.43] <Shiral> Exactly
[07:32.19] <Jerusha> I need to read that series again
[07:32.25] * Evie winds up the launcher just in case it's needed
[07:32.38] <revanne> They still sell Horlicks - its very sweet and sickly though
[07:33.07] <Jerusha> Sweet and sickly?
[07:33.34] <Evie> Noooo Luke Bonecrusher is back!
[07:33.45] <Jerusha> Hi Luke!
[07:33.50] <Jemler> a family actually HAS that name?!
[07:33.52] <DesertRose> Luke, get your furry keister off Evie's chest.
[07:34.04] <revanne> Well I think it is but I don't like sugar in drinks
[07:34.09] <The_Bee> Hi Luke!
[07:34.17] <Evie> His furry keister, his furry belly, his furry clawed legs...
[07:34.35] <Jemler> shave your cat!
[07:34.40] <Evie> LOL
[07:34.57] * Jerusha offers a whippet to provide a distraction
[07:35.12] <Evie> He'd keep circling to see what I was trying to do to him. He'd end up with the equivalent of crop circles
[07:35.19] <DesertRose> LOL
[07:35.24] <revanne> He's keeping out of the rain
[07:35.34] <DesertRose> I can just picture Luke with crop circles cut into his coat.
[07:35.41] <Evie> not hard, since he's an indoor cat
[07:35.45] <Jerusha> Poor Luke!
[07:36.12] <Evie> both of mine are indoor cats We have too many predators here for me to let them roam freely
[07:36.22] <DesertRose> To say nothing of cars.
[07:36.23] <Evie> not to mention Luke has a bad sense of direction
[07:36.36] <Jerusha> Indoor cats tend to live longer
[07:36.42] <Evie> yes
[07:36.44] <revanne> Yes - not worth the risk.
[07:37.24] <revanne> Our local fieldmice must wish our cats were indoor cats
[07:38.20] <Evie> I think we ended up with him due to him having lousy directional sense, if he wasn't tossed out, but considering he was neutered and collared when we got him, but far from any home that claimed him, he may have been wandering for days when he turned up at my MIL's house. And fortunately someone was actually there that week.
[07:38.31] <DesertRose> Field mice live a perilous life anyway, between cats and owls and who knows what all else.
[07:39.13] <Evie> around here, outdoor cats lead perilous lives, between cars, owls, large hawks, and coyotes
[07:39.30] <Evie> and I'm fairly sure there was a bear that came through the neighborhood a few years back
[07:39.35] <DesertRose> YIKES
[07:39.49] <Jerusha> We have bear
[07:40.04] <revanne> Plus one of our two must have slipped across the atlantic because he's a dead ringer for puss-in-boots in Shrek
[07:40.11] <Evie> panthers haven't been spotted in decades, but they may still be around in small numbers
[07:40.17] <KK> My guys are indoor/outdoor, and used to be prolific hunters in Ireland, but not so much here.  They were baffled the fist time they saw a chipmunk.
[07:40.22] <DesertRose> LOL
[07:40.42] <Evie> :D
[07:40.44] <Jerusha> No chipmunks in Ireland
[07:40.53] <KK> Not that I ever saw.
[07:40.56] <revanne> Lol KK
[07:40.57] <Evie> "Look...incredibly cute food!"
[07:41.02] <Jemler> chip, dale, alvin, simon or theodore?
[07:41.04] <DesertRose> LOL, Evie.
[07:41.06] <Shiral> I have  indoor cats at my new place. Dmitri is an escape artist. At my apartment, he destroyed a variety of window screens in his lust to be outside
[07:41.12] <Jerusha> You beat me to it, Jemler
[07:41.21] <Jemler> lol
[07:41.33] <KK> I think it was Gus who caught the first one--and one of the dogs took it away and gulped it down in one big bite.  Booker, I thin.
[07:41.45] <DesertRose> PJ likes to go outside but she kept picking up ticks, so she's not allowed to explore anymore.
[07:41.47] <Shiral> My new windows are a lot easier to keep partway closed, and the ventilation/insulation is much better, so it doesn't get so damned hot in here.
[07:41.49] <revanne> No Chipmunks this side of the pond
[07:42.04] <DesertRose> Merlin is a scaredy cat and doesn't like to go outside at all; he's quite content to be a pampered house cat, thank you.
[07:42.12] <Jemler> we'll send you some!
[07:42.29] <Shiral> Francesca is also mostly happy to be an indoor cat
[07:42.37] <Evie> although the Codex has chipmunks in Gwynedd. Is that a Robism? I figure the chipmunks are how tomatoes got to Gwynedd to go on Jass's pizza. ;)
[07:42.39] <Jerusha> Do you have anything equivalent, revanne?
[07:42.46] <The_Bee> I've seen skunks in my back yard.
[07:42.51] <Shiral> They have a nice sunny spot on my bedroom rug where the sun comes in in the morning
[07:42.59] <revanne> Thanks but no thanks
[07:43.16] <Evie> I also loved the herds of antelope roaming the Llandreth plains
[07:43.21] <KK> Oh, we have skunks down here.  And deer.  And the occasional bear comes through the yard.
[07:43.32] <The_Bee> and raccoons
[07:43.36] <Jerusha> In Virginia?
[07:43.37] <revanne> I guess squirrels are the nearest equivalent
[07:43.54] <Evie> we have deer
[07:43.57] <KK> I've never seen raccoons here, but I'm told they're around.
[07:44.09] <Evie> they wander through our yard at times
[07:44.15] <Evie> and we have raccoons
[07:44.19] <Evie> and opossums
[07:44.44] <Shiral> I once had a raccoon come into my living room back at my apartment. Cats were cowering under the furniture.
[07:44.45] <KK> We have opossums (one of which Booker and Warner caught and killed), and rabbits and groundhogs.
[07:44.47] <DesertRose> I was at a friend's house at the beginning of this month and saw some very brazen raccoons.
[07:44.47] <Jerusha> We have mosquitoes the size of opossums
[07:44.51] <Shiral> I chased it away, though
[07:45.08] <Evie> skunks have a sunny spot on your bedroom rug, Shiral????
[07:45.15] <Shiral> No, my cats, Evie
[07:45.17] <The_Bee> smart cats, Shiral.  Raccoon eat cats
[07:45.23] <Shiral> Much less smelly!
[07:45.29] <DesertRose> Raccoons eat almost anything.
[07:45.50] <DesertRose> They're not exactly finicky eaters.
[07:45.50] <Shiral> I was just shocked at the blatancy of it all
[07:45.53] <KK> They'd have to catch a cat first.  I don't think they're normally part of the same food chain.
[07:46.12] <Shiral> No. I was glad that my cats didn't try to take it on
[07:46.49] <Evie> we have to warn people not to feed the cute little raccoons here, because they bite and often carry rabies as well
[07:46.49] <The_Bee> A while back someone put out a poster warning dog-owners to beware of raccoons attacking their pets.
[07:47.20] <DesertRose> Yeah, they can carry rabies and they can be super mean.
[07:47.25] <The_Bee> The food chain consists of whatever they can catch.
[07:47.38] <KK> Oh, in the Codex department--I've got my agent working on ferretting out the rights.  And he has no problem with fans helping with proofing on future e-books.  And he will request a different narrator on future audible books.
[07:47.44] <DesertRose> YAY!
[07:47.54] <Evie> YES!!!!!
[07:47.56] <Jerusha> Well done!
[07:48.06] <The_Bee> good news
[07:48.11] <Evie> I would be glad to help with proofing
[07:48.14] <revanne> The fiercest thing we have over here are wild boar andsome stags can be threatening
[07:48.21] <Shiral> Whoopee!
[07:48.25] <KK> The Codex project will be a little complicated, but we think we can pull it off.
[07:48.28] <Evie> and you, revanne. ;)
[07:48.29] <Jerusha> Let me know if there is anyway I can help
[07:48.33] <Jemler> count me in!
[07:48.37] <Shiral> I don't think wild boar will be good at proof reading though
[07:48.47] <revanne> Lol Evie
[07:49.28] <Evie> wild boar would find it boaring
[07:49.29] <revanne> No - make good sausages though
[07:49.40] * DesertRose smacks Evie with a goldfish.
[07:49.41] <KK> Wild boar tstes really good.
[07:49.47] <KK> tastes
[07:49.53] <revanne> Codex sounds great
[07:50.13] * KK pictures Evie being rained upon by dozens of goldfish crackers.
[07:50.18] <Evie> :D
[07:50.36] <DesertRose> :)
[07:50.49] <Shiral> The narrator for the first three books was very good, though
[07:50.55] <Evie> I'll just leave a bag open to catch the snacks in
[07:51.03] <Kildara> I am expecting to retire in about a year - if there's still any Codex work to be done, would love to.
[07:51.11] <Evie> Yes, I liked the oriignal guy well enough
[07:51.18] <revanne> Luke and Gigi think they're in heaven because its raining fish
[07:51.20] <DesertRose> Assuming the fierce and cunning Gigi doesn't beat you to the snacks, Evie.  :)
[07:51.37] <Evie> Just NOT...the DRAMATIC...Shatnerian READER
[07:51.59] <Jerusha> Oh dear
[07:52.06] <Shiral> Oh, so you don't want Captain Kirk reading Camber the Heretic?? =o)
[07:52.17] * Shiral snickers evilly
[07:52.18] <Evie> Not my first choice.
[07:52.28] <Evie> or my thirty-fifth
[07:52.38] <Evie> or my hundred and fifty-eighth
[07:52.44] <revanne> Haven't had a chance to see if we can get the audio books here yet
[07:52.52] <Shiral> If you can't get a reader in 35 tries, I think it's time to give up. =o)
[07:53.06] <KK> We'll see what we can do.  Maybe I can have auditions.
[07:53.18] <Evie> If it takes that many tries, I'LL read them! :D
[07:53.44] <Evie> (Except I don't think I'd sound much like Alaric either. :D)
[07:54.04] <Shiral> You could practice, I suppose...
[07:54.07] <Kildara> I think auditions would be a great idea - especially KK if you can have some say over choice -
[07:54.18] <Shiral> Anyway, we all know you'd rather sound like Duncan.
[07:54.20] <Evie> that would be good
[07:54.25] <Evie> LOL!
[07:54.40] <Evie> No, I'd rather hear Duncan read them. The REAL Duncan
[07:54.53] <Jemler> Adrian Paul?
[07:55.08] <Shiral> Ummmmmmm.....I don't know if it will be possible, Evie....We've tried to keep it from you but....
[07:55.09] <Jerusha> That's a thought
[07:55.18] <Evie> I like Adrian Paul, but I can't see him as Duncan
[07:55.34] <Shiral> If he's just reading the book though, you won't have to see him
[07:55.45] <Evie> there is that
[07:55.58] <Shiral> I'd vote for Tom Hiddleston to read the books, but I expect he'd be rather expensive
[07:56.10] <DesertRose> He does have a lovely voice, though.  :)
[07:56.22] <Shiral> Wonderful, yes.  Very good.....diction
[07:56.27] <Jerusha> What about David Tennant?
[07:56.34] <DesertRose> Also pricey, I should think.
[07:56.38] <Jerusha> As Duncan
[07:56.59] <Jerusha> Maybe he's a secret fan (so OK, one can dream)
[07:57.02] <Evie> I'd keep looking for a TARDIS Transfer Portal
[07:57.09] <DesertRose> LOL
[07:57.14] <Shiral> Adrian Paul wouldn't work for Duncan, although he might make a good Guiscard de Courcy
[07:57.16] <revanne> I can do a cute British accent
[07:57.16] <revanne> No good at Border dialect though
[07:57.26] <Evie> "What's that awful noise in the sacristy, Duncan?"
[07:57.37] <Jerusha> Just the Tardis, Father
[07:58.32] <revanne> David Tennant is amazing
[07:59.08] <Jemler> i'll take Jenna Coleman.

"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
