[07:07.39] <The_Bee> Hi KK
[07:07.40] <DesertRose> Hi KK!
[07:07.40] <Evie> hi KK
[07:07.42] <DesertRose> Hi Aerlys.
[07:07.46] <KK> Hello, all.
[07:07.52] <Serian> Hi, Katherine
[07:08.15] <Jemler> hi kk
[07:08.15] <KK> How is everyone?
[07:08.21] <Jemler> hot.
[07:08.21] <Dennis> Hi, all!
[07:08.23] <Serian> Hot and humid
[07:08.23] <Dennis> Hi, KK!
[07:08.26] <DesertRose> Fighting the beginnings of a migraine, unfortunately.
[07:08.31] <Dennis> Okay. Busy day.
[07:08.52] <DesertRose> How are you, KK?
[07:08.56] <The_Bee> pretty well.  My church had its annual meeting today.  No big surprises; we need more money
[07:08.56] <KK> Hot and migraines are icky!
[07:09.00] <Aerlys> Hi KK. Oh, that stinks DR
[07:09.17] <DesertRose> I get them from time to time.  I've already taken my medicine for it, so hopefully it will go away in the next little while.
[07:09.18] <Serian> Doesn't everyone, Bee? Lol
[07:09.23] <Jemler> your church only meets once a year? wow!
[07:09.32] * DesertRose slaps Jemler with a rainbow trout
[07:09.32] <KK> I'm good.  Yesterday we took the hounds to a Basset picnic up in Maryland.
[07:09.45] <DesertRose> A Basset picnic?
[07:09.50] <The_Bee> one business meeting, not one religious service.
[07:09.54] <Serian> Did you release the hounds?
[07:10.13] <Jemler> who let the dogs out?
[07:10.27] * Aerlys finds the image of charging basset hounds amusing
[07:10.56] <Serian> Almost as amusing as charging corgis :)
[07:11.02] <DesertRose> The dog that got my daughter over her fear of dogs (which I never could figure out the origins of) was a Basset hound who belonged to a friend.
[07:11.05] <The_Bee> Bet you didn't know basset hounds have credit cards ;)
[07:11.10] <DesertRose> LOL
[07:11.27] <Aerlys> Somhow knew someone would come up with taht
[07:11.33] <KK> We were going to let them run--there was an enclosed area where they could go off-leash--but Booker was a bit too aggressive/protective with the other dogs. He was better by the time we left, having been reassured that he was not going to be attacked, nor was anyone going to attack me.
[07:11.46] <Serian> Aww
[07:11.54] <DesertRose> Aw, poor Booker.
[07:11.57] <Aerlys> poor poochie
[07:12.10] <KK> Warner was pretty mellow after half an hour or so.
[07:12.43] <KK> Booker may remember being bullied by a great Dane puppy at the obedience classes I took him to, when he was just a puppy.
[07:12.55] <DesertRose> Oh, I saw a recipe on Facebook for dog "ice cream" treats (frozen treats involving banana and peanut butter, IIRC), but I don't remember the exact recipe.
[07:13.01] <Serian> That or he's just VERY protective of you
[07:13.26] <DesertRose> Just to help the doggies cool down with something yummy in the hot weather.
[07:13.41] <KK> Oh, he <is> very protective of me.  Part of the herding dog part of him, I think.
[07:14.07] <The_Bee> protective of Scott too?
[07:14.10] <Serian> He just couldn't let his guard down
[07:14.51] <KK> Not as much, but I think it was more that he was nervous about so many other dogs, even though they looked like him.
[07:15.10] <Serian> Culture shock for a dog?
[07:15.21] <The_Bee> as long as he doesn't try to protect you from the cats...
[07:15.43] <KK> It was fun, though.  The longest trip we've ever taken them on, about 2 1/2 hrs. each way.
[07:16.01] <DesertRose> Speaking of fuzzballs, is Gus keeping you company, KK?  :)
[07:16.27] <KK> Actually, Gus has gone out to enjoy/watch the rain, about half an hour ago.
[07:16.43] <Serian> Does he enjoy the thunder?
[07:16.46] <DesertRose> LOL, he likes being out in the rain?  Weird cat.  Most cats I've met don't like being wet.
[07:17.43] <The_Bee> I have a question for the cat owners:  Do you know any tartar control treatment that actually works?  food or water additives?
[07:17.51] <KK> None of them enjoy thunder.  Fortunately, there's none today.  When it thunders, both dogs get under my desk knee-hole and cower.  Oswald also hated thunder; may have taught them to be afraid too.
[07:18.00] <Serian> Oh dear!
[07:18.04] <Aerlys> my friend had a cat that liked to get in the shower with you
[07:18.08] <DesertRose> LOL
[07:18.18] <Serian> Our cat liked to watch the toilet flush
[07:18.33] <KK> He was actually hunkered under the garage eaves, watching what the rain might stir up out on the back yard.
[07:19.06] <DesertRose> Aerlys, I used to have a friend whose cat scared the dickens out of her by jumping up on a ledge in the shower whilse she had her eyes closed washing her hair, so she opened her eyes from rinsing the shampoo out, there was GIANT BLACK CAT in her direct line of sight.
[07:19.19] <Aerlys> lol
[07:19.45] <Aerlys> Still, I'd prefer that to the 30 pound cat on my chest
[07:19.51] <KK> Re tartar, Bee, I wish I did.  Unfortunately, cats over the age of about 5 need to have their teeth cleaned regularly by the vet.
[07:19.51] <DesertRose> The cat in question was definitely a house panther.  HUGE black cat, not fat, just tall and big.
[07:19.59] <Serian> Our runt black cat would try jumping into the tub with you, but when he realized there was water in it, he bounced right out again.  It was like teleportation
[07:21.01] <Jemler> a cat using a transfer portal?
[07:21.20] <Serian> It looked that way :)
[07:21.28] <Jemler> a portakitty!
[07:21.31] * Jemler ducks
[07:22.33] <Serian> I'm not sure I have the strength to toss a fish
[07:22.37] <Serian> :)
[07:23.00] * Jemler stands up
[07:23.01] <Jemler> ok
[07:23.11] * Evie lends Serian the mackerel launcher
[07:23.20] <Serian> You have a launcher?
[07:23.24] * Jemler ducks
[07:23.33] <Evie> I do. Want to see how it works?
[07:23.42] <Serian> Please do
[07:23.49] <Evie> I type /mackerel and this happens....
[07:23.52] <Evie> Evie smacks Jemler upside the head with a mackerel
[07:23.59] <Serian> Amazing!
[07:24.02] <Evie> :D
[07:24.20] * Jemler stands up
[07:24.27] <Jemler> missed me!
[07:24.39] * Jemler sticks out his tongue
[07:24.39] <Evie> Evie smacks Jemler upside the head with a mackerel
[07:24.48] <KK> I have no launcher.  :(
[07:24.50] <Jemler> oh sh......
[07:24.56] <The_Bee> KK, how are you coming with the treecats?
[07:25.11] <KK> A plot is taking shape.
[07:25.16] <DesertRose> Oh good~
[07:25.16] <Serian> Make me try to eat the mackerel, and I'll have a launcher you wouldn't want to see
[07:25.29] <DesertRose> That was supposed to be "Oh good!"
[07:25.47] <KK> So is a main character and a timeframe.
[07:26.04] <Evie> that helps
[07:26.28] <The_Bee> Remind me--who are you honoring with this story?
[07:27.10] <KK> ?
[07:27.24] <The_Bee> Why are you writing it?
[07:27.48] <KK> It's for an Honorverse anthology for David Weber, if that's what you mean.
[07:28.01] <The_Bee> Yes! That's it.
[07:29.10] <The_Bee> Have there been other Honorverse anthologies for other authors?
[07:29.23] <KK> The juices are also percolating for the next Deryni.
[07:29.38] <Serian> Any particular era?
[07:29.42] <The_Bee> Killington approaches
[07:29.48] <KK> Weber owns the Honorverse, so all the anthologies featuring characters in that universe are for him.
[07:30.12] <Serian> Honor Harrington?  Is that the name?
[07:30.13] <KK> The Great War of 1025.
[07:30.29] <Serian> Ahhh
[07:31.04] <KK> Yes, stories set in her universe.  She may make a cameo appearance in my story, if I can make the timeframe work.
[07:31.33] <Serian> My hubby loves those books, I'll tell him to keep an eye out for it
[07:31.46] <Serian> I enjoy them, but not like he does
[07:32.59] <Evie> Glad to hear the Deryni haven't gone fully dormant while you're visiting another universe
[07:33.48] <Serian> Good Deyni never die, they just pull a St. Camber ;)
[07:34.54] <Evie> Good Healers never die, they just lose their patients
[07:35.02] <Serian> :p
[07:35.05] <KK> Actually, good Deryni do die.
[07:35.15] <Serian> Sad, but true
[07:35.23] <The_Bee> all too often
[07:35.38] <Serian> I remember all to well when I read about Rhys Thuryn dying
[07:36.10] <Evie> Yes, I remember those loud lamentations at 2:00 am being my own. ;)
[07:36.40] <Serian> I think I screamed, "NOOOO!!!!!!"
[07:36.58] <DesertRose> I threw the book across the room.
[07:37.17] * Laurna (Mibbit@OWIRCN-b94a57fc.res.rr.com) has joined channel #Deryni_Destinations
[07:37.20] <DesertRose> Hi Laurna.
[07:37.24] <The_Bee> Hi Laurna
[07:37.26] <Laurna> Hello everyone
[07:37.29] <Evie> My roommate was asleep, so I just cried quietly
[07:37.31] <Serian> Hi Laurna
[07:37.32] <Evie> Hi Laurna
[07:37.52] <KK> Hi, Laurna.
[07:38.25] <The_Bee> I was taught to respect books too much to throw them.
[07:38.26] <Laurna> Just home from a dog show. Jessa won her class, beat one other dog, lol.
[07:38.38] <DesertRose> So was I, but I was too upset to care in that moment.
[07:38.38] <Serian> Congratulations!
[07:38.43] <DesertRose> Yay for Jessa.
[07:38.44] <Evie> :-)
[07:39.19] * Kelric (~IceChat9@32F4F9.AFCB16.CAC8DB.A93869) has joined channel #Deryni_Destinations
[07:39.32] <Evie> hi Kelric
[07:39.34] <The_Bee> "The other dog came in second, and Jessa was next to last."
[07:39.42] <The_Bee> Hi Kelric
[07:39.44] <Aerlys> Hi Laurna, HiKelric
[07:39.49] <Laurna> Exactly Bee
[07:39.49] <Serian> Hi Kelric
[07:39.54] <KK> Hi, Kelric.
[07:40.14] <KK> Congrats to Jessa, even if there were only two dogs competing.
[07:40.33] <The_Bee> What was her class?
[07:40.35] <Laurna> We did not place in the winners class but that is fine.
[07:40.55] <KK> Yesterday I took my two guys to a Basset picnic.  We had about 20-25 hounds there.
[07:41.33] <The_Bee> Is Warner full basset?
[07:41.34] <Laurna> We entered her in American breed.   Too much competition in the open class for us.
[07:42.16] <Laurna> Oh a basset picnic would be fun to watch. imagine a pile of basset hounds all together
[07:42.45] <The_Bee> They're the ones with short legs?
[07:42.51] <KK> Warner is full Basset, though only pet quality.  Great ears, but spots on them.  And his muzzle isn't as narrow as some of the more stringently bred dogs.
[07:43.03] <KK> He's adorable, though.  And I love his silky ears.
[07:43.27] <Laurna> Love to watch basset hounds in action.  loopy loopy trip on the ears loopy
[07:43.59] <The_Bee> What were they originally bred to hunt?
[07:44.25] <KK> Warner's ears aren't so long that he can trip on them, but I do have to hold them out of the way if I give him a plate to lick, so they don't drag in the food.
[07:44.28] <Jemler> hi kelric, laurna
[07:44.39] <Serian> Our cat was a breeder reject.  A Bombay runt with a slight overbite.  But he was the best behaved cat in the world, lol
[07:44.43] <KK> Bred to dig out rabbits, I believe.
[07:45.11] <DesertRose> On the phone with DD so will be quiet for a bit.
[07:46.02] <Aerlys> We had a neighbor who had a basset/black lab mix. Looked like someone took a lab and lopped off his legs. Hysterical!
[07:46.39] <KK> Hunting with Bassets is done on foot.  With their short legs, it's not too hard to keep up with them.  They're scent hounds, which accounts for so many wandering off and getting lost.
[07:46.41] <The_Bee> a bassador like Oswald
[07:47.06] <Laurna> Do your bassets weigh about 35lbs or are they heavier than that, KK?
[07:47.38] <KK> Oswald was Basset and golden retriever.  Legs were short, ears slightly longer than a golden.  When he stood in the snow, he looked like this big, noble dog, but the short legs betrayed him.  Great dog, though.
[07:48.00] <Laurna> KK too cute.
[07:48.25] <KK> Ours are more like 60-70.  Booker is quite a big dog, when he sprawls on the floor.  Short legs, though.
[07:48.26] <Serian> Do Bassets bounce like Corgis?
[07:48.38] <KK> Not quite as much.
[07:48.55] <Serian> I think they all resent having had nature cut them ok
[07:49.04] <Serian> Cut them off at the knees
[07:49.09] <KK> I know that Shiral is keen on Corgis.  I've not had a chance to ask her where this come from, with her being such a cat person.
[07:49.33] <DesertRose> I guess Shiral must be working tonight or something.
[07:49.42] <Serian> I'm allergic to anything with fur, so we never got another cat after ours died around age 18
[07:49.44] <The_Bee> Quees Elizabeth II owns Corgis, doesn't she?
[07:49.50] <The_Bee> Queen too
[07:49.51] <Serian> Yes, she does
[07:50.04] <Aerlys> My cousin had two Bassets named Nieman and Marcus
[07:50.12] <Laurna> lol
[07:50.23] <KK> Yes, and Dorgies--Corgi/dachshound crosses.
[07:50.37] <Serian> My brother had two cats named Schlitz and Budweiser
[07:51.21] <KK> At 89, though, she's not replacing them anymore, just letting them die out.  But for many years, all her dogs were descendants of a Corgi given her by her parents when she was a teenager: Susan.
[07:51.23] <DesertRose> I had two named Cyrano and Christian, although Cyrano was mine and Christian was DD's cat.
[07:51.29] <Jemler> should have named the ZKit and Kat.
[07:51.33] <Jemler> should have named the Kit and Kat.
[07:51.39] <Jemler> sorry
[07:51.50] <Aerlys> Jemler should like this one. Some joker out here was breeding Jack Russels and Shih Tzus and selling them as Jack-Shihtz
[07:51.59] <Laurna> Your doggies are heavier than they look, KK.  Do they like to sit in your lap or are they good siting at your feet?
[07:52.23] <KK> They sit at and on my feet.
[07:52.31] <Serian> When I was a kid, we had a pair of finches we named Aragorn and Arwen.  Aragorn killed Arwen and lived happily ever after.
[07:52.49] <Laurna> Puppy slippers!
[07:53.18] <Jemler> wouldn't hush puppies be more comfortable?
[07:53.31] <Serian> Where's the fish launched?
[07:53.32] <KK> When they're playing hard, they can easily knock me off my feet.  I have to brace for impact when they're hurtling toward me.
[07:53.34] <Serian> R
[07:53.35] <Aerlys> lol. My friend had goldfish. Nero and Caligula. One day, Nero was found dead on the BOTTOM of the tank. Every goldfish she got afterwards died, but not Caligual
[07:53.53] <Serian> I suspect foul play
[07:54.11] <Aerlys> so did we, but we had o proof. :}
[07:54.12] <The_Bee> definitely something fishy
[07:54.19] <Aerlys> no proof
[07:54.22] <Jemler> caligula killed nero so he woulsn't burn down the castle.\
[07:54.32] <Serian> Hard to do underwater
[07:54.39] <Aerlys> interesting thing to do in a fish bowl
[07:54.51] <Evie> Caligula got tired of Nero's fiddle
[07:54.57] <Jemler> like a fish drowning?
[07:55.13] <Aerlys> he sent him to sleep with the humas
[07:55.15] <Aerlys> huans
[07:55.18] <Aerlys> humans
[07:55.32] <Evie> third time's the charm
[07:55.43] <Serian> I was just thinking that
[07:57.05] <Aerlys> sorry, fielding a minor kid dispute and typing don't mix
[07:59.29] <Evie> .
[07:59.41] * DesertRose drops a pin.
[07:59.49] <Evie> tossing a pebble out to see if anyone is alive
[07:59.53] <DesertRose> LOL
[08:00.03] <Laurna> Just day dreaming
[08:00.15] <Jemler> at 8pm.
[08:00.30] <Evie> It's not 8 PM in CA yet
[08:00.33] <DesertRose> It's not 8pm Laurna's time; it's only 5.  :P
[08:00.37] <Aerlys> ok, I think a truce has been agreed upon
[08:01.00] <Laurna> Went to the train museum yesterday. they had a civil war event it was lots of fun walking around the steam trains.
[08:01.12] * Evie searches under the couch to see if that's where the cats hid the French manicure strips
[08:01.13] <DesertRose> Did you get your dress finished, Laurna.
[08:01.15] <Aerlys> Which trim museum?
[08:01.21] <DesertRose> ?
[08:01.29] <Aerlys> train
[08:01.52] <Aerlys> again, distracted by DS3 giving hugs and kisses
[08:01.54] <Laurna> Orange empire railway  it is a private train collection.
[08:02.02] <KK> French manicure?  Of course, this <is> ordinary time, so I guess you could do green.
[08:02.42] <Aerlys> don't forget red for Pentecost next Sunday
[08:02.56] <DesertRose> Oh, well, then, my toenails are set for Pentecost.  :)
[08:03.02] <Evie> Oh, I've finished the Liturgical Year of nail colors and am back to my usual zany nails on personal whim method
[08:03.24] <Aerlys> my fingernails aren't worth painting
[08:03.29] <Jemler> what is a pente, and what does it cost?
[08:03.34] <Evie> I got really REALLY tired of green nails after a while
[08:03.42] <DesertRose> I don't usually bother with my fingernails either, because of typing so much.
[08:03.53] <Aerlys> Seven gifts, Jemler
[08:04.12] <KK> I currently have Jordan almond blue toenails; great fun!
[08:04.13] <Evie> I type daily, but I still like to have fun with the nail colors on occasion
[08:04.25] <Laurna> +https://www.pinterest.com/pin/457185799649045853/,
[08:04.45] <Serian> I don't think I can reach my toenails well enough to paint them, lol
[08:04.48] <DesertRose> I type a LOT as a medical transcriptionist, so my manicures get slaughtered when I bother to paint my fingernails.
[08:04.55] <Laurna> That is me in the bright plaid
[08:04.59] <Evie> Nice!
[08:05.27] <DesertRose> Very nice, Laurna.
[08:05.32] <Jemler> brb
[08:05.33] <Aerlys> Yes, nice!
[08:06.54] <KK> Very nice, Laurna.
[08:07.02] <KK> Nice steam locomotice, too.
[08:07.03] <Evie> I type pretty much most times when I'm not asleep or eating, but I've just learned to type more with the balls of my fingertips rather than the very ends
[08:07.04] <Serian> Ah, the hoop skirts!  Nicely done
[08:07.09] <The_Bee> Speaking of holidays, what's the Latin name for Three Kings Day?
[08:08.17] <Laurna> Really nice train,  rode it down to the end of the city track and then it backed up back to the station about 5 miles
[08:08.25] <Evie> Is that the same as Epiphany, or are those different days?
[08:08.55] <The_Bee> Epiphany!! That's what I was trying to remember.  Thanks, Evie
[08:08.58] * Shiral (Mibbit@504018.A7BCBA.6044E5.E2E484) has joined channel #Deryni_Destinations
[08:09.01] <DesertRose> HI Shiral.
[08:09.05] <Laurna> Hi Shiral
[08:09.06] <The_Bee> Hi Shiral
[08:09.08] <Jemler> hi shiral
[08:09.09] <Aerlys> hi Shiral
[08:09.12] <KK> I don't think I've ever seen it in Latin.  And I think they're the same.
[08:09.13] <Evie> hi Shiral
[08:09.13] * Shiral arrives in chat with a champagne cork pop
[08:09.20] <KK> Hi, Shiral.
[08:09.21] <Shiral> Hello everyone
[08:09.24] <The_Bee> just got home, Shiral?
[08:09.30] <Jemler> bee, would it be Magi Monday? :)
[08:09.31] <Shiral> Nope, Still at work
[08:09.33] <Aerlys> time to celebrate, eh?
[08:09.36] <Laurna> What are we celibrating?
[08:09.40] <KK> We were talking about you earlier.  Where did you develop your affection for Corgis?
[08:09.51] <Shiral> My sister used to have a corgi
[08:09.51] <DesertRose> Were your ears warm, Shiral?  :)
[08:10.01] <Shiral> I just think they're so darn....cute!
[08:10.07] <Jemler> Tres Reges Die
[08:10.23] <Shiral> They're not too big, and not a yappy little purse pup. Just the right size
[08:10.28] <Evie> Tres Reges Die sounds like a story about regicide
[08:10.49] <The_Bee> El Dia de los tres Reyes
[08:10.49] <KK> Ah.  They <are> adorable, especially the puppies.  Of course, most puppies are adorabe.
[08:10.55] <Jemler>  Killingford.
[08:10.58] <Shiral> Oh, so THAT'S what it was! It was kind of embarrassing to have those pointed furry doggy ears on desk!
[08:11.06] <KK> I don't think they get along with cats particularly well, though.
[08:11.22] <Jemler> bee, that's spanish
[08:11.27] <Shiral> No. And everytime I think I want a dog, I lie down until the feeling goes away
[08:11.35] <The_Bee> They do in Rita Mae Brown's fiction.
[08:11.55] <The_Bee> I know, Jemler
[08:12.06] <Shiral> It's a commitment I'm not ready to make. But I still think they're the cutest dogs going, so it's an aesthetic appreciation
[08:12.09] <KK> They're probably ok if they're brought up together.
[08:12.20] * Shiral sets the chat table with dog biscuits.
[08:12.23] <Shiral> Dig in, everyone
[08:12.26] <DesertRose> LOL
[08:12.33] <Shiral> Oh dang!
[08:12.37] <Jemler> Three Kings Day in Latin: hreetay ingskay ayday.
[08:12.44] <The_Bee> most dogs and cat get along if they're used to each other.
[08:12.48] * Aerlys sets out jalapeno dip to cover the taste
[08:12.51] * Shiral snaps fingers and the dog biscuits turn into mint chip blizzards
[08:12.52] <Laurna> My puppies thank you Shiral
[08:12.53] <Evie> We had a kitten guest last week, but she went to her forever home yesterday.  DD's boyfriend's family took her in.
[08:12.58] <KK> I see that Warner has just come in and is sprawled behind my chair.  It's raining, so maybe he thinks there might be thunder.
[08:13.01] <DesertRose> Oh good, Evie
[08:13.18] <Shiral> Give them a pat for me, Laurna
[08:13.34] <Laurna> No problem Shiral
[08:13.36] <Evie> She was adorable, though. If we could have taken a 3rd cat, she would have been perfect.
[08:13.45] <Laurna> Glad the kitty found a home Evie
[08:13.52] <Serian> I miss my kitty :(
[08:13.54] <The_Bee> black wasn't she?
[08:13.55] <DesertRose> Kittens are adorable by their nature.
[08:14.06] <Evie> Black with green/amber eyes
[08:14.07] <Jemler> gus wouldn't go with her?
[08:14.08] <Shiral> I do not DARE go near any place that's having a kitten adoption festival. I'd be in so much trouble!
[08:14.32] <The_Bee> Have they named her yet?
[08:14.34] <Jemler> i'm a dog person.
[08:14.42] <Laurna> Me too
[08:14.51] <Aerlys> feeling peckish. BRB
[08:14.56] <Evie> She was ultra affectionate, loved to be held, and even enjoyed car rides
[08:15.07] <KK> Most all baby animals (and baby humans) are adorable when they're small, with those big eyes.  I read somewhere that it's nature's way of ensuring that they don't get killed and eaten while young.
[08:15.20] <Evie> I don't know if they are renaming her or not. DD and her friends were calling her Sweetiebelle
[08:15.20] <Serian> I've heard that, too
[08:15.31] <The_Bee> at least not by their own parents
[08:15.44] <Shiral> Wouldn't be surprised. Dmitri went through a phase when he thought his name was actually D***it
[08:15.59] <Evie> lol
[08:16.10] <Jemler> Dmitrish**.
[08:16.27] <Shiral> But he's the kind of cat that can't resist an open cabinet door. It's there for HIM to explore it, clearly
[08:16.35] <The_Bee> Melantha was known as Sadie in the shelter.  But I felt she wasn't really mine til I renamed her.
[08:16.40] <KK> Well, yes.  I saw a video on u-tube of a lion killing and eating lion cubs that were not his offspring.  And apparently they do this.  Very upsetting and very sad.
[08:17.00] <Shiral> Nature ain't always pretty, it's true
[08:17.03] <Jemler> getting rid of the competition.
[08:17.10] <The_Bee> The males do it so the female will be ready to breeed his cubs sooner.
[08:17.24] <Evie> Gigi was named Patty at the shelter, but she got renamed immediately since she's just not a Patty
[08:17.33] <Jemler> only the male offspring though, kk
[08:17.41] <Shiral> Even male cats will kill kittens for the same reason.
[08:18.15] <KK> Yes, Jemler.
[08:18.22] <Evie> Luke has no clue he's a male cat, then. He just looked at the newcomer and was "OK, new kitten. When did we get that one?"
[08:18.42] <The_Bee> Is he neutered?
[08:18.46] <Evie> Yes
[08:18.47] <Jemler> why do i feel sorry foe luke?
[08:19.02] <Jemler> he's been cat-snipped.
[08:19.03] <KK> In domestic cats, this doesn't happen all that often.  But in lions, yes.
[08:19.46] <The_Bee> Domestic kittensoften  have human protectors.
[08:20.03] <Shiral> Saw it happen in a National Geographic Special. Other than size, domestic cats are more like wild cats than not
[08:20.31] <Shiral> Our Cat Luna had a kitten killed by a neighbor cat, once
[08:20.42] <Jemler> it's just that doestic cats have trained humans to take care of them.
[08:20.44] <The_Bee> According to one catfood commercial, domestic ats are descended from lynxes.
[08:20.46] <Evie> Gigi also seemed only mildly curious. The only one showing aggression at all was the kitten, who gave a few self-protective hisses on the first day or two, but settled down after that
[08:21.08] <Aerlys>  am I still here? computer went to sleep
[08:21.12] <Aerlys> oh, good
[08:21.19] <The_Bee> Yes you are
[08:21.22] <DesertRose> Luke has no clue he's a cat at all; he eats PEAS for crying out loud.
[08:21.23] <Shiral> Dmitri and Francesca did a lot of mutual hissing the first few days
[08:21.30] <DesertRose> Yes, Aerlys, we've still got ya.  :)
[08:21.32] <Evie> There is that, DR. :D
[08:21.34] <Serian> Like all babies, the kitten wanted to be sure it was the center of the universe
[08:21.38] <KK> I read about a cat species recently, domestic, where the parents bond pretty much for life, and share in the rearing of the kittens.  Can't remember the name of the breed, but they're related to Norwegian forest cats, I think.
[08:21.43] * Shiral throws a lasso around Aerlys.
[08:21.48] <Shiral> Yup, you're still here
[08:21.55] <Serian> Our cat ate green beans and potatoes, DR
[08:22.06] <DesertRose> Norwegian forest cats are so pretty, but lord bless, they're huge.
[08:22.17] <The_Bee> some cat foods contain potatoes.
[08:22.18] <DesertRose> LOL, my Tessa ate almost anything except raw carrots.
[08:22.36] <DesertRose> She'd eat the carrots that had been cooked in pot roast, though, just not raw ones.
[08:22.39] <Shiral> Anything I'm eating is "delicious" to my cats. Until they try it for themselves
[08:22.44] <KK> Huge, yes.  As are Maine coons.
[08:22.49] <Serian> He wanted French fries, mashed potatoes, potato chips, so long as they were cooked, he wasn't picky
[08:23.12] <DesertRose> Maine coon cats are lovely too, but yes, gargantuan kittehs.
[08:23.21] <Serian> He also ate my potted herbs, until he got into the garlic chives
[08:23.25] <DesertRose> Oh dear.
[08:23.37] <Aerlys> uh oh
[08:23.43] <Evie> that's not good
[08:23.51] <DesertRose> My ex-husband told a story about a friend whose cat ate her marijuana plant and was meandering around the house very, very stoned.
[08:23.51] <Serian> It cured him of chewing on any plants
[08:23.54] <Shiral> I have mutt cats. Francesca is small and dainty. Dmitri is huge and rangy. No idea about what went into their DNA to produce them.
[08:24.33] <Shiral> Dmitri likes to behead tulips if I try to have them in a bouquet in any spot he can reach
[08:24.59] <Serian> Does he eat them or merely behead them?
[08:25.05] <DesertRose> I don't usually keep plants in the house because I can't seem to keep them alive, although I presently have a cut carnation that was brought to me last week for Mother's Day.
[08:25.06] <Shiral> Beheads them
[08:25.23] <Serian> That's just... so cat
[08:25.27] <DesertRose> The petals are starting to brown on the edges.
[08:25.30] <Shiral> So people are somewhat startled to see my livingroom bouquets are up on a high shelf. =o)
[08:25.51] <DesertRose> People who have or at least had cats should understand.
[08:26.20] <Shiral> He'll leave Chrysanthemums alone. But tulips, irises...He is Henry VIII to their Anne Boleyn
[08:26.28] <DesertRose> ROFL, Shiral.
[08:26.29] <Evie> LOL
[08:26.49] * Shiral is in mourning that Wolf Hall is over.  What will I DO with myself tonight????
[08:26.56] <DesertRose> Or Katherine Howard.
[08:27.03] <Shiral> Yes, her too
[08:27.12] <Serian> Or the Queen of Hearts
[08:27.41] <DesertRose> I have a book about the wives of Henry VIII, and while being a dipstick is not a death penalty offense, Katherine Howard appears to have been a total dip.
[08:27.48] <KK> I understand that there's a second series--and there are two Broadway shows based on the books, Wolf Hall and one of the second, whose name I forget.
[08:27.53] <The_Bee> Q of H was the beheader, not the beheadee.
[08:27.54] <Shiral> She was very immature
[08:28.01] <DesertRose> To say the least.
[08:28.11] <Serian> True, Bee
[08:28.20] <Shiral> I think the TV series was a combination of Wolf Hall and Bring Up The Bodies
[08:28.39] <Shiral> I fell in love with Damian Lewys
[08:28.42] <The_Bee> Catherine Howard really did cheat on Henry, didn't she?
[08:28.47] <DesertRose> Yes, she did.
[08:28.48] <Shiral> Yes
[08:29.00] <Shiral> But at that point, Henry was getting old and fat and impotent
[08:29.00] <DesertRose> Again, not worthy of beheading, but really freaking stupid move on her part.
[08:29.03] <KK> Bring Up the Bodies--that's it.  I was under the impression that this book covers the rest of the wives.
[08:29.18] <Shiral> When you're the Queen, you can't get caught being naughty, alas
[08:29.27] <Jemler> she was caught with her guard down. :)
[08:29.34] * Jemler ducks
[08:29.34] <DesertRose> And her skirts up.
[08:29.49] * DesertRose lobs a goldfish in Jemler's direction.
[08:29.54] <Shiral> Not sure if I'm right, but the TV series ended with Anne Boleyn's execution
[08:29.58] * Jemler stands back up
[08:30.14] * Shiral swats Jemler with a carp
[08:30.16] <Jemler> why did you throw a fish?
[08:30.20] <Aerlys> Keep lobbing fish at jemler and he'll get a great workout
[08:30.21] <Shiral> For fun
[08:30.36] <Shiral> ANd I was waiting for you to stand up
[08:30.37] <DesertRose> It's not a chat session if we don't throw fish at you, Jemler.  :)
[08:30.48] <Serian> Guard down, skirts up, sounds like Xenia
[08:30.58] <DesertRose> Poor Xenia.
[08:31.09] <Shiral> Poor Xenia.  I do think Sigismund was mostly to blame, though
[08:31.21] <Laurna> agreed
[08:31.24] <DesertRose> Yes, I think so too.
[08:31.25] <Serian> Probably.  But hormones are hormones
[08:31.31] <DesertRose> And she paid quite the price in the end.
[08:31.46] <Shiral> Yes, she was probably a hormonal festival
[08:31.56] <Serian> At that age, lol
[08:32.06] <Jemler> aerlys, am i doing squat thrusts with catherine howard?
[08:32.24] <DesertRose> My stepdad was making a remark about understanding why wealthy people send their adolescent children off to single-gender boarding schools.
[08:32.25] <Shiral> A very heavy price, poor girl. Being young and flirty shouldn't be a death sentence. But perhaps she would have died in childbed no matter what
[08:32.45] <DesertRose> Childbirth was a dangerous business in those days, and it can still be quite harrowing.
[08:32.53] <Serian> All too common when medical practice is very limited
[08:33.14] <KK> brb
[08:33.17] <Serian> My mother fully expected that a few of us would die in infancy
[08:33.20] <Shiral> Definitely true, DR. I think it was a leading cause of death for women, back then. and for many more centuries as well.
[08:33.32] <DesertRose> A lady I know on a message board for another fandom just had a baby and had a really rough labor and the baby's shoulder got dislocated during the birth.  It was just rough all around, and this was a couple of weeks ago.
[08:33.38] <DesertRose> Yes, it was.
[08:33.56] <Shiral> Child birth--it ain't for the faint of heart
[08:34.23] <Jemler> that's why i've never done it, that and i'm a guy.
[08:34.28] <The_Bee> The start of the myth that a woman is the "weaker vessel."
[08:34.33] <Serian> An excellent reason
[08:34.57] <DesertRose> Somebody did some studies about women's lifespans, and medieval women who survived their childbearing years actually got about the same lifespan as a modern woman; the low lifespans of women tended to have a lot to do with the perils of childbearing.
[08:35.00] <Jemler> i think sol. passing a kidney stone would be bad enough!
[08:35.06] <Shiral> And if you needed a C-section... that's when you need Rhys Thuryn handy to deliver your babies
[08:35.10] <Serian> Not for the myth, for Jemler not experiencing childbirth
[08:35.15] <DesertRose> No kidding.
[08:36.22] <DesertRose> If you made it to menopause, you were likely to live well past 70, but quite a fair few women didn't make it to menopause.
[08:36.42] <KK> I'm back.
[08:36.44] <Shiral> Life, nasty brutish and short. Nobody gets out of it alive, even now
[08:36.46] <DesertRose> WB, KK.
[08:36.51] <Serian> Welcome back :)
[08:36.55] <The_Bee> Rehi, KK
[08:37.02] <Serian> Life is the leading cause of death
[08:37.04] <Jemler> hi back!
[08:37.22] * DesertRose rolls her eyes at Jemler and pitches a puffer fish at him.
[08:37.22] <Shiral> And then if you did live, you had to deal with nosy neighbors wondering if you were a witch.
[08:37.26] <Jemler> life is sexually transmitted.
[08:37.32] <DesertRose> No kidding, Shiral.
[08:37.53] <Serian> Only for sexual life forms, Jemler
[08:38.06] <Shiral> I like to play in the middle ages, but I'm sure glad I don't have to stay =o)
[08:38.26] <DesertRose> No, I like modern plumbing, electricity, and computers too much.  :D
[08:38.35] <Jemler> if you want to experience the middle ages, go to church!
[08:38.35] <Serian> And central air
[08:38.37] <DesertRose> But it's interesting to study.
[08:38.42] <Shiral> Oh yeah
[08:38.44] <Laurna> at least not without Healers
[08:39.01] <DesertRose> Shoot, I wouldn't mind Healers NOW.
[08:39.26] <KK> I think we all live in the best of all possible worlds, at least of what we've seen so far.
[08:39.33] <DesertRose> And I suspect the medical profession would find them helpful in general too.  :)
[08:39.39] <Serian> Yes, where are our body overhauls and flying cars?  We were supposed to have them by 2015!
[08:39.47] <Jemler> well, i got an early appt tomorrow. so, g'night all.
[08:39.55] <Serian> Night, Jemler
[08:39.56] <DesertRose> I don't want flying cars.  There are enough wrecks with land-based cars.
[08:39.58] <DesertRose> Night, Jemler.
[08:39.59] <The_Bee> But the impossible worlds can be very interesting.
[08:40.05] <Laurna> night Jemler
[08:40.07] <The_Bee> Bye Jemler
[08:40.21] <KK> Night, Jemler.
[08:40.26] <Serian> Well, I agree about flying cars, DR.  But I want the body overhaul
[08:40.27] <Aerlys> goodnight, jemler
[08:40.38] <Shiral> Bye, Jemler
[08:40.42] <KK> I was certainly glad to get the eye overhaul.
[08:40.57] <Jemler> i'd rather have star trek replicators. enough idiots driving, don't need them flying!
[08:41.10] <DesertRose> Healers.  I like my body just fine most of the time, but if someone could fix my arthritis that is setting in way too freaking young, I'd be forever grateful.
[08:41.18] <Serian> Those are coming in 3d printers
[08:41.27] <Jemler> i want one!
[08:41.28] <Shiral> If I could have a Star Trek Holodeck, I'd love to visit Gwynedd =o)
[08:41.54] <Laurna> Oh let us all do that Shiral
[08:41.54] <Jemler> nite all
[08:41.59] * Jemler (~jemler@OWIRCN-9733da4b.oh.comcast.net) Quit (Quit: )
[08:42.04] <The_Bee> What about that guy who rode a flying bike from Florida to Washington DC?
[08:42.15] <Shiral> Sure! Now all we have to do is....build the technology. =o)
[08:42.26] <DesertRose> We can visit Gwynedd anytime we like.  KK's written, what 20-some books in the Deryniverse?  :)
[08:42.45] <Evie> Second Life is our closest modern equivalent to the Holodeck, but building a Virtual Gwynedd would be way too much work
[08:42.48] <Shiral> Well yes. But I'd really like the Holodeck for the FULL body experience
[08:42.50] <DesertRose> :D
[08:42.56] * Shiral checks watch and yelps
[08:43.07] <DesertRose> Got to go back to work, Shiral?
[08:43.16] <Shiral> Oops, sorry everyone. I have to go back to being a corgi...I mean an employee!
[08:43.17] <The_Bee> past closing time?
[08:43.26] <Shiral> Coming up to closing time yes
[08:43.29] <KK> Bye, Shiral.
[08:43.30] <Laurna> lol  good nigth shiral
[08:43.31] <Serian> Bye, Shiral
[08:43.37] <The_Bee> bye Shiral
[08:43.39] <Evie> bye Shiral
[08:43.42] <DesertRose> Night, Shiral.
[08:43.45] <KK> It's about time for me to check out, too.  See you all next week.
[08:43.46] <Aerlys> night, shiral
[08:43.53] <DesertRose> Okay, night, KK. Have a good week!  :)
[08:43.53] * Shiral waves farewell steps onto my portal and disappears in a cloud of shed corgi fur
[08:43.54] <Laurna> Good night KK
[08:43.56] <Shiral> oops!
[08:43.57] <Shiral> Sorry
[08:44.00] <Shiral> BYE!
[08:44.02] <Evie> goodnight KK
[08:44.05] <DesertRose> Enjoy those treecats/Honorverse stuff!
[08:44.05] <Serian> Night, Katherine
[08:44.06] * Shiral (Mibbit@504018.A7BCBA.6044E5.E2E484) Quit (Quit: +http://www.mibbit.com, ajax IRC Client)
[08:44.19] * KK steps onto her Portal, waves goodnight, and disappears in a shower of green sparkles.
[08:44.19] <The_Bee> Thanks for coming, KK. have a good week and pet the animals for us.
[08:44.27] <DesertRose> Thanks for visiting with us!
[08:45.15] <KK> Should have more to report next week.  Oh, and it may be possible for some of you fans to do some proofreading on future e-books.  More next week.  And more on the possible Codex update.
[08:45.23] <DesertRose> Oh YAY!
[08:45.34] <Evie> KK, let me know if you need proofing done
[08:45.34] <The_Bee> We'll look forward to it.
[08:45.36] <Laurna> Yay
[08:45.47] <DesertRose> A searchable Codex would be fantastic.  :D
[08:45.56] <Serian> I'm available for that :)
[08:46.26] <DesertRose> And an e-published Codex would be easier to update.
[08:46.26] <KK> I'm in talks with my agent.  More next week, I hope.
[08:46.31] <KK> Nighters.
[08:46.36] <DesertRose> Goodie goodie YAY!
[08:46.39] <DesertRose> Night!
[08:46.40] <Serian> Night!
[08:46.43] <Evie> :-D
[08:46.46] * KK Quit (Quit: +http://www.mibbit.com, ajax IRC Client)
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)
