Really? Duncan's a knight but needs hand holding to venture outside the city walls?  :o From the description, it sounded to me like Duncan was not that far outside the city walls, probably even within sight of them (or at least might have been had he not been sitting in the shade of overhanging trees), and certainly not venturing out so far that he would have had reason to expect to need an escort. Just like I wouldn't expect to be mugged in broad daylight while walking a quarter of a mile to lunch, although certainly that would be possible in downtown Birmingham. It's just unlikely enough that I'm not going to bother with going to lunch on the buddy system just on the remote chance someone might choose to jump out at me from some bush or shady doorway someday. This is Rhemuth, after all, not some frontier town like Cardosa! So why would Duncan have expected to need a riding buddy for a brief excursion outside the city gates? Normally I can see this being a non-issue, it's just that this time he ran afoul of someone who was deliberately waiting for a vulnerable moment to attack him. And that could have happened in the city walls almost as easily as outside.

It would be all about retroactive love and anxiety. And also worry that they'd let themselves grow too complacent? And a bit shaken that such a thing COULD happen within sight of Rhemuth's walls. It is true that such a thing could happen in the city walls, the implications are not reassuring.

I thought it was kind of silly, given that Corwyn's been held by a Deryni family for a good many years, that there was no Portal there, so I decided Alaric must have built one at some point in the intervening ten years between the end of KKB and this part of this story, probably with Richenda's assistance and I'm sure various others, given that Portal construction (with the exception of Camber-Alister's rotating Portal at Grecotha, which C-A seems to have built single-handedly) seems to be a multi-Deryni endeavor.

I've always assumed that there was one somewhere in the castle or on the grounds, but that its location had been forgotten over the years.

That seems logical too, Elkhound, and doesn't really contradict Alaric and Richenda deciding that there should be one someone knows how to find.  :)
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

There probably was one at Coroth the location of which was forgotten, and it has "faded out" through lack of use.  IF portals do fade out, that is.  The message Dom Emrys left at the St. Neot's portal was still clearly readable over  200 years later when Alaric found it by accident, even though that was a special case of the portal having been destroyed deliberately.

I think maybe Kelric and Briony could find the old one while doing some childhood exploring.... "Papa, we've found a room where the floor tingles!"

KK did say (somewhere in Deryni Magic, IIRC, but my copy of that book has gone missing on me :( ) that Portals will become unsafe or unusable over time if unused, but I like the idea of Briony and Kelric finding a maybe still present if not safely usable Portal whilst playing in Coroth Castle.  :D

And perhaps even if it had become unsafe/unstable over the years, it could possibly be fixed.

Quite possibly.

So much fun!
I just stumbled across this in the Codex this morning before I signed on to the forum.

Portals Page 201
...The signature of an unused portal tends to fade over time, But can often be revived with a minimal influx of energy, even after many centuries of disuse, Sulien( of R'Kassi) once noted: "Portals are forever."  Never-the-less the text continues to say that "many portals in Gwynedd were destroyed or disabled".  But remember that Corwyn was not part of Gwynedd until 75 years after the Harrowing.

I also found it interesting that the Codex lists different kinds of portals, including "large triports designed to facilitate the transport of many men and other materiel."

I am in love with the idea of Briony and Kelric running across an old unused portal.
Shiral, I think you need to do some writing for us.  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Connel was instructed not to experiment with any portals he might find in his travels, which indicates to me that it was common knowledge among Deryni with any knowledge that at the time of the Troubles many portals were set with booby traps.
