Farewell Leonard Nimoy/Mr. Spock
« on: February 27, 2015, 12:59:03 pm »
Actor Leonard Nimoy, who was recently hospitalized "with severe chest pains" passed  away, today. This one hurts, a bit.  Not that I spent a lot of time thinking about him, but the original Star Trek series was the TV show of my childhood, and both Star Trek and Mr. Spock were very much a part of the popular culture as I knew it, growing up.  Lots of actors can play James Bond.  But nobody else will ever really be Mr. Spock to me in the way Leonard Nimoy was. Pale impostors, at best.  Farewell, Leonard Nimoy. You both lived long and prospered, and you were a fascinating intelligent man.  You will be sorely missed.

     I've added a drawing by Leslie L. Williams published in issue 11 of Deryni Archives the Magazine in the fan art section, that actually DOES tie this passing to the Deryni Universe. (I had no luck inserting it here.)

A childhood memory indeed. - gone beyond the final frontier. Rest in peace
Let God rise up, let his enemies be scattered;
    let those who hate him flee before him.
As smoke is driven away, so drive them away;
    as wax melts before the fire,
    let the wicked perish before God.
(Psalm 68 vv1-2)

I hate to hear that. I have fond memories of discovering Star Trek as a child.  Twice, in fact, since I first discovered the stories via the James Blish books when I was living in Italy without a TV, then shortly after returning to the US, I discovered this cool "new" show on TV (which was actually in syndication by that time, although I didn't know that) that had stories that seemed oh so familiar, but it took me a while to realize that the books were actually based on the TV series and not the other way around!  ;D

I'm very sorry to hear that.  I was addicted to the show when it came out, and of course Mr. Spock was my favorite character.  They boldly went where no one had gone before... and my imagination loved every minute of it.

In addition to being a well-known (and freaking GOOD!) actor, Mr. Nimoy appears to have been a really awesome person.  He once rather famously offered via Twitter to be an honorary grandfather to anyone who wanted or needed one.

I saw him once in a made-for-television movie called Never Forget (released in 1991) wherein he played a Holocaust survivor who sued a Holocaust denier.  Very powerful film and he did an outstanding job.

I hope his passing was peaceful.  I'm holding back tears now, and I don't usually cry over celebrity deaths.  (Robin Williams was an exception, and so is Leonard Nimoy.)
"If having a soul means being able to feel love, loyalty, and gratitude, then animals are better off than a lot of humans."

James Herriot (James Alfred "Alfie" Wight), when a human client asked him if animals have souls.  (I don't remember in which book the story originally appeared.)

I was so sorry to hear about the loss of Leonard Nimoy this morning. He was an icon from my first memories of childhood. My dad was and still is an avide Star Trek watcher. When it first showed and then again in reruns. I recall it was the only TV show that was ever allowed to be on during the dinner time. There for a while it played at 6:00pm, and dad could not miss one episode. I loved it as much, too. I really loved that Nimoy still had parts to play even in the newest films as Mr.Spock who had gone back in time.

He supported our Griffiths Observatory and lead its rebuilding it a few years ago. I have not seen the new exhibits but I have always wanted to.

Rest in peace ---"Live long and prosper!"
